Summary: THE ONE SQL SERVER BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE
I picked up Stanek's SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant and Windows Server 2003 Inside Out at the same time, and have found them both to be excellent. If there's one SQL Server book every developer, programmer and administrator should have, it's this one--I haven't found a better one and I've read half a dozen so far. Stanek has a gift for getting to the point, explaining the most complex concepts in ways that are easy to understand. He seems to pack a 1,000 pages of info into 550 pages. SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant has a strong focus on security, configuration, optimization, and troubleshooting. Throughout the book, there's excellent coverage of T-SQL and I prefer the way T-SQL is covered in context in this book to the way it's covered in the separate T-SQL book I bought (and no longer use). Beyond core database administration, which this book covers better than any other book, it also covers full-text search, indexes, integration services (creating packages), linked servers, distributed transactions, replication, publications, etc. The maintenance chapters are some of the strongest with complete coverage of profiling, monitoring, optimizing, backup, recovery, log shipping, database mirroring, automation, etc. Thank you Mr. Stanek for an excellent book.
Summary: THE definite SQL Server 2005 admin ref
Ever since I picked up Stanek's Windows 2000 admin pocket consultant, I've relied on his books and they've never let me down. When I needed to learn about SQL Server 2005, I checked to see if there was a pocket consultant and I'm thankful there was. This book has been a constant resource in getting up and running with sql server. As usuall Stanek packs in more detail than other books twice as big, making this a powerful and to the point resource. All 549 pages are top notch!
Summary: Which version is it?
I'd feel more comfortable about buying this book if the sample pages actually referred to SQL Server 2005 instead of SQL Server 2000. Some of the reviews are dated 2004. So which product does this book cover?

Summary: What you need to know right now to fix the problem
The words 'Pocket Consultant' in the title are interesting. I don't have a pocket anywhere near big enought to hold this 600 page book. On the otherhand, you don't need the wheeled dolly to cart abound the whole library you needed when you were first learning how to be an administrator.

What this book is for is as a refresher when you need some command or switch or flag that you don't use very often and you can't remember what it is. And for that it's ideal. The stated intent of the author is to provide a book that has what you need to do the administrative task at hand without a lot of extra stuff.

This is the second edition of the book. It has been updated to cover Service Pack 1 and Release 2. These releases had significant amounts of code in them and made numerous changes in how everything worked.

If you have the first edition, you know how much you use it and it's time to upgrade your book just as you did your operating system.
Summary: Excellent value
Good depth - covers multiple subjects and has plenty of expert advice. Does an excellent job of covering the most important aspects of Windows administration. I was surprised by how much information is packed into ~600 pages. Concise and portable just like it says. It's the one windows book I use the most.
Summary: Win Svr Adm Guide - mrp
I bought the book as a reference book and it has been able to provide me with easy to find and accurate answers each time I had to refer to it

Summary: Now we know who to blame
This is an interesting book, the most popular biography of one of the most interesting people of the early part of the last century. Gertrude Bell is largely lost to history, which is a shame. She was an expert on Arab affairs and Middle Eastern politics, a true polymath back when you could be such a thing. She spoke numerous languages, wrote "travel" books (accounts of travels she'd had in exotic places), was an accomplished historian and archaeologist, and worked during World War I as what amounted to an intelligence agent, serving further as an advisor after the war, liasing with the Arabs in Iraq. In addition to all of the above, she mapped out the boundaries of the country that became Iraq, and late in life founded the first museum for antiquities in Baghdad. All this in a man's world, where women weren't supposed to venture.

This is a good book on most of the subject, though Wallach's understanding of the events surrounding Miss Bell is sometimes a bit weak. She also proves tone deaf with regards to British society and its niceties, portraying Bell's relationship with T.E. Lawrence ("of Arabia") as somewhat unlikely because he was from a "lower middle class" family while hers was of a much higher level. In reality, Lawrence was the illegitimate son of an impoverished Irish Baronet (certainly not lower middle class) while her family were newly wealthy (her grandfather and father mined coal and smelted iron and steel) and therefor likely to be looked down upon by those with titles. Despite these faux pas, the book is generally interesting, and conveys a sense of Bell's influence in the aftermath of World War I, when she was considered by some to be the most important woman, and one of the most important people, in the administration of the British Empire. I recommend this book.
Summary: A woman who was a vital player in the modern history of the Middle East
This book was chosen for discussion by a member of our non-fiction book group. Along with other courses intended for continued learning, the group is affiliated with a local college. I would not have been interested in this book otherwise, because I had never heard of Gertrude Bell.
However,I found the book fascinating. Gertude Bell was an unusual woman for her time, educated at Oxford and extremely independent with a forceful personality. She traveled by camel through the deserts, becoming friendly with Arab leaders while exploring, mapping and finding artifacts for a museum she established.
Incorporated into the British administration in the Middle East, she held much power. She influenced Churchill and others when decisions were being made about the way Middle Eastern countries were to be run after World War I. She was instrumental in establishing Faisal I as king of Iraq.
A lot of the book covers her personal life which, on the whole, was unhappy and drove her to seek adventure away from England
This would be a good book for our politicians to read as it covers much of the history of the Middle East and describes the factions and feuds over the centuries that influence conditions to-day.
Summary: A remarkable history perhaps not yet learned
In searching for some background on middle east history, I happened upon this work. The times were so much different than today, at least in the western world.

This work does get a bit bogged down in Miss Bell's personal life, but does a decent job of relating her life and times to the happenings in the yet-to-be-established Iraq.

For a first time study of the region, it's as good a read as any. I too, as others have mentioed, would have liked a bit more solid (meaty) history.

Her approach, learning, through personal interaction, tribe histories and notables, is still very applicable (and perhaps missing) today.

Summary: Excellent!
I spend most of my time working with SQL Server, but recently I had to take over and rebuild our Exchange. As I've had good success with Stanek's other books, I picked this one up the week before to help me get up to speed on Exchange, and it did an excellent job. I successfully upgraded, had all our servers up and running by Monday morning and we have an extensive multiple server configuraiton with OWA, wireless, and X.400 MTAs. Exchange Administrator Pocket Consultant is by far the one Exchange book I can't recommend highly enough. Get it, you'll be glad to have it on hand. I refer to this book constantly.
Summary: MS Exchange Server 2003 pocket consultant
This book has been very helpful with building a new server, migrating from MS Exchange 2000.
Summary: Ugly book
Buy it only if you haven't installed Exchange server help yet. If you have than read the help first and save money.

(Bought it in Russian and checked in English to make sure that translation is correct. Well it's a copy of English book, unfortunately)

Summary: Time Management for Techies who get Interrupted Frequently
How many times do you get interrupted from your "main" task in a day? "Time Management for Techies who get Interrupted Frequently" could have been the title of this book. While the real title of this book is "Time Management for System Administrators," it is really useful for any techie who faces interruptions. And that's most of us!

In the preface, the author states "This book is not for programmers. Beta readers told me that programmers should find this book extremely useful, but ... deserve their own book." I agree with the beta readers - developers benefit from this book plenty. We support production applications, have emergency issues and are frequently called on to answer tech questions..

The book introduces readers to traditional time management concepts in case they are unfamiliar with them. Then the author adapts those techniques to work well when your priorities change throughout the day. There are also chapters are reducing stress, e-mail management and automation.

I found the techniques on prioritizing to be much more relevant than the typical time management book. Since the book is not teaching a technology, it was easier to read than the typical white book with an animal on the cover. The quality is high as you would expect.

I read this 200 page book in four days. It was hard to put down! How much would you pay to have a better handle on your time and responsibilities? At $25, this book pays for itself in no time!
Summary: "TIME AFTER TIME!!"
Are you an IT worker? If you are, then this book is for you! Author Thomas Limoncelli, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical book for IT people who are early in their career, but also for industry veterans who will find these time management techniques to be equally useful.

Limoncelli, begins by introducing the principles that will be used throughout the rest of the book. Then, the author shows you how to deal with an interrupting customer without sounding like a jerk. He continues by showing you how to turn chaos into routine. Next, the author introduces you to his "Cycle System," which is a way to manage your to do list. Then, the author focuses upon the actual day-to-day work of putting The Cycle System into practice, creating your schedule and to do list. Then, he extends The Cycle System to include his calendar. He also shows you how to identify long-term goal, both personal and professional, and how to make sure you achieve them. Next, the author discusses a few different ways to prioritize so that The Cycle System works even better. Then, he shows you how he learned to manage stress. He continues by showing you a few realistic tips for getting control over the flood of email you receive. Next, the author discusses how to eliminate time wasters. Then, he explores ways to document without pain. Finally, the author explains a few methods to automate a lot with little effort.

This is an excellent technique book. More importantly, this book is about you and how to improve your life through better time management.

Summary: How to retain control over time during project management tasks
Thomas A. Limoncelli's Time Management For System Administrators tells how to retain control over time during project management asks, and comes from real examples taken from the author's own career in desktop support and server management. From handling interruptions and keeping a calendar to developing routines for frequent issues, Time Management For System Administrators should reach the entire computer industry with solutions applicable to a range of issues.

If you enjoyed this book you will also appreciate Ryan Delaney's Mission Accomplished by Anna T. Erickson
Summary: SUPER-DOOPER!!!!
I was flabbergasted when Neila Connors and my principal casually walked into my classroom today (11/11/2005). Her personality is as charming as her book. As a veteran, "rogue" teacher for the past three decades, I completely understand what she maens by: "If You Don't Feed the Teachers, They Eat the Students." Not only do I believe that literally administrators must "break bread" with teachers, but also, they must give them the positive psychological strokes. Neila Connors has all the necessary "how-to's" in her book. It is a MUST read book!!!
