Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Good, but could be better This was the first book I used (the CS version) when I started learning Photoshop a few years ago. While it was helpful, the book is divided into specific lessons, with little time spent on how Photoshop's tools work together or in what sequence they should be used. The lesson on masking, for instance, shows you how to create and work with a mask, but spends almost no time discussing the logic behind masks or or how they make your photo-editing tasks easier. I guess what is missing is a "holistic" feel to the book. When I finished, I certainly had a better knowledge of some of Photoshop's features, but the knowledge was disjointed. The next book I read, and one which every Photoshop user should have, is Katrin Eismann's "Photoshop Restoration & Retouching." It is the best book I've seen on Photoshop, whether for the beginner or an advanced user. I won't review that book here -- you can look it up on Amazon. I use Photoshop now at my job and as a hobby, and credit Eismann's book with most of my Photoshop knowledge and confidence. The Classroon in a Book is helpful, but once you finish it and begin using Photoshop, you probably won't ever look at it again (I haven't). Eismann's book, however, continues to be an essential reference and guide for me. Summary: "How to" is nice, but "Why" is better This is well intended, and mostly well achieved title. That is, it serves a good introduction to the interface and application in general terms. But it falls far short of deeply teaching the application. Yes, a user will have completed many exercises, and will have had many "successes", building confidence along the way. All good things. Additionally, one learns the vocabulary of Photoshop, the locations of tools and palettes, and something about the program's settings. But sadly, as a teacher, I see little deep understanding of how to use the application from those who rely solely on this text. And although knowing where things are and what they're called are important steps to passing the Adobe Certified Expert exam, it's more important to know how to achieve results in efficient ways that only real understanding--and much practice--can produce. I was fortunate to help create that exam for the last several versions of Photoshop, and I believe it tests how an adept user actually uses the program. One should be proud to pass that test! This book will get you started, perhaps, but it won't make anyone adept or expert. Try turning to Real World Photoshop CS2 (Fraser and Blatner) or Adobe Photoshop CS2 for Photographers (Martin Evening) for that. Classes don't hurt either, but I'm biased there. But mostly, joyful, frequent, and curious use will make one an expert. Summary: More Fluff Then Substance This book covers most of the features in a very hit and run style. Each lesson tells you what to click on, but rarely why, and even then, only on some of the options. Several of the options in Photoshop have sub-options that are not covered in the book. I expected to have to do some experimentation, but not nearly to the degree that I have had to with a product published by Adobe. Any book with "Classroom" in the title should teach most, if not all, of the functions, not sell a few of the "tada" features of a program. As well, the table of contents and index are lacking as a reference tool. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very nice book It is a comprehensive step by step book. I liked the fact that it also included alternative instructions for the instances when a Mac would have different commands. Summary: Good book, but not at all if you prepare for the exam The book was overall a good book with all what you need to know about Adobe Acrobat. I am preparing for the exam and the book does not cover 75% of the test. Unfortunately Adobe did not think of this and decided to make it very hard for us. Microsoft on the other hand has many books that cover the topics for their exams. Wish Adobe would learn that one thing from them.... Summary: Good book for beginners I found the tutorials easy to use and thought they taught how to use Acrobat very well. Some items may get repetitive if you have purchased other CS2 books, but I recommend it for anyone that purchases Adobe Acrobat CS2. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Perfect for getting specific jobs done This book isn't a great general overview of Photoshops capabilities or a theoretical explantion to understand the underpinings of the program. I've bought books like that and still not known what is the best way to convert a color photo to black and white. This book provides an extensive list of real-world issues that photographers have to deal with using Photoshop and step-by-step ways to deal with those problems. It is perfect for those of you who want practical, usable advice to change and improve digital images using this extremely powerful, complex program and don't need to understand Photoshop theory. Summary: Photoshop reference manual I found this book to be a great "Go To" book while working in Photoshop. I have not tried to read it from cover to cover. Summary: Learn From the Master and Enjoy The Journey Wow! Now I know for sure, that I can be a successful digital photographer and enjoy the journey along the way, because the way has been paved with this book!!! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very useful and user friendly The Classroom in a Book for Adobe InDesign.cs2 was well organized and easy to use. I found the info on printer profiles lacking in more detailed information about the individual profiles and their results under various circumstances. I still do not know whether to let InDesign Determine Colors or PostScript Printer Determines Color. I liked the glyphs, but do not have access to them when I am using InDesign for my own documents. I miss having a Keyboard Shortcuts for InDesign cardstock trifold like PageMaker. Keyboard shortcuts are not published in the Classroom in a Book. PageMaker shortcuts are not all relevant to InDesign. The index could include useful terms. Judy Baker, Multimedia Designer and Publisher Engineering Computer Services Sinclair Community College Dayton, Ohio Summary: New full color edition is a great way to learn I have been learning Adobe's applications via their Classroom In A Book series. I find there is just nothing better out there. After all it is the official training program from Adobe written by Adobe experts - what else is there to say! The book itself is made of quality paper and is beautifully layed out. They give text and graphics ample space on each page, nothing is cramped and everything is arranged in a logical order. The instructions are precise and given in small enough steps with lots of graphics and pictures along the way so you won't get lost. In fact, each chapter is easy and interesting to follow and it helps that the projects are beautifully designed layouts. You'll create magazine pages, newsletter pages, a restaurant menu, a CD insert etc. that you look forward to finish and that will leave you inspired. Some chapters encourage you to also "Explore On Your Own" and each chapter features a review and answers section to test your aquired knowledge. Maybe you have to revisit some of the earlier chapters because you may have forgotten some details once you've been plugging away for a while, but that simply speaks for the volume you will have to absorb since InDesign is afterall a complex application. Having said that, everybody should feel very confident to use and further explore InDesign upon completion of the book. It includes a CD with 15 lessons and Quicktime tutorial movies. If you have been sceptical to learn by yourself, this book will make it easy! Summary: Good way to start, but not really a reference The Classroom in a Book for Adobe InDesign CS2 and Adobe Illustrator CS2 seems to be a pretty good way to start learning these programs, for someone like me who has been using Quark XPress and Macromedia FreeHand for many years. I did encounter what I think is a problem with the CD in my InDesign book. To begin with, when I put it in my PowerMac G5, as it was being accessed, my CD drive abruptly stopped and started up again several times. This has never happened before. I removed it and tried again with the same result. I was able to copy the lessons, however. Also, the first lesson of the InDesign CD has a page layout where many actions you are going to do have already been completed, making it difficult to follow the instructions in the book, as things don't appear on screen as they do in the book. This is clumsy and confusing. Did I get a bad CD, or have others encountered this? I do think the layout of the book is well done (though the screen shots seem to be from Windows - they don't look like they do on my Mac), and this is a good introduction and tutorial for the program. But it is not a true reference like the Real World books from Peachpit. That's why I just ordered those for InDesign and Illustrator CS2! Summary: |
| The Photoshop Channels Book

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Book for Intermediate Photoshop Users "The Photoshop Channels Book" continues Scott Kelby's well-established tradition of creating Photoshop instructional books that are concise, written in a lively and humorous style, and take the reader right to the heart of processes. This time he delves into the potential applications of Photoshop's "mysterious" channels panel, something that most people rarely use. While other books touch lightly on the subject Kelby devotes an entire volume to its functionality, and deservedly so. The book is very well designed in a 1950's/1960's TV-channel metaphor, richly illustrated and very easy to follow. Nearly anyone can get something new from it in ten minutes or less. It's a superb work that should have a long shelf-life as Photoshop continues to evolve. Summary: Great book In response the previous reviewer who hated it, yes I'm a beginner and thanks to Mr. Kelby I'm finally getting it. Who says that Photoshop's advanced techniques should be for the Selected few. The guy knows how to teach. Makes complicated concepts seem easy. The book is very organized and easy to read. On the downside: He is using a lot of filler addressing some topics that few of us will need. Summary: Info is great.... The information in the book is really great. My problem with the book is that the author goes WAY overboard on "cutesy". His cutesy style of writing often made it hard to focus on content. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Masking and Compositing Made Easy Eismann again has produce an authorative, well written, easy to use book on CS2. The best I have found. Summary: AWESOME, AWESOME. AWESOME This book is awesome. I have learned so much from this book and will keep it handy for a reference book. It is worth buying. I could not recommend this book enough. I will purchase her other book now. I can sum it up in three words--BUY, BUY, BUY. You wont be sorry. You will need to know the basics of photoshop first and then this book will put you above and beyond your expectations. Summary: Enlightening to an intermediate user of Photoshop! I am truly impressed with the author's ability to educate and enlighten me in an area that I thought I had understood pretty well. She does so in a matter of fact, step by step approach. If you are confused by the channels pallete in Photoshop, or if you want to learn how to make excellent selections for making layered collages, this is the book for you. I have been using Photoshop for over 3 years now, and I am glad I waited to purchase this book. It assumes you have a good general knowledge of how Photoshop works. If you don't have that experience look for Ben Long's book Titled Studio Techniques. I highly recommend this book for intermediate users of Photoshop. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: All illustrations are Black & White ! I have just received my copy. I have not read it yet, just looked at it casually and to my horror I found that all illustrations are Black & White except for a few pages in the middle as in dictionaries published 40 years ago when color was too expensive. Shame to Adobe. How can anyone appreciate Photoshop capabilities? This fact is not clearly mentioned in the book description and is barely understood from the contents of another review. Summary: Brilliant This was a great purchase and has helped me a lot since i purchased it. Summary: A powerful tutorial for a powerful program The Adobe Creative Team consistently produces the most powerful tutorials for Adobe products, and their manual for Adobe Photoshop CS is no exception. They are always well organized with clearly explained, excellent, and practical excercises. As a professional Photoshop trainer, I still rely on these manuals to bring me up to date on the newest features in new releases of the software. The learning experience is greatly enhanced by working through actual excercises and provides an understanding of how and when features can be used for a personal creative approach. A word of warning-Photoshop is an extremely powerful program and both the software and the manual can be extremely overwhelming for those who have had little experience with computer graphics. Anyone wanting or needing to use Photoshop, but finding the self teaching approach daunting, I highly recommend some type of classroom training. But even in this setting Adobe Photoshop CS Classroom in a Book will provide an excellent source for the practical application of the program. Summary: |
