Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: like taking a $@#! on heroin (That's a quote from somewhere in the book) I haven't stopped laughing since I picked up this book and now I also can't stop finding Do's and Don'ts all over the streets of Chicago. I'll be giving this book out to unsuspecting friends for Xmas this year. Summary: laughs!!!!! i don't have the words to tell you how funny this book is. read it... twice Summary: Sits well next to a toilet... So most of the photo write-ups come from insular, genre-arguing, punk ex-junkies... That's a fact. Though on the whole, the photos are interesting, and the fashion reviews are humorous, especially when a visual faux pas is employed. Sadly, many of the critiques are poop level, and the reviews of women generally amount to "hot-or-not" trash. Nevertheless, the book goes great next to a toilet and will, no doubt, be the envy of all your teenage male friends. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: great leisure read "the vice guide to sex and drugs and rock and roll" is more of an introduction to, well, the vices in life. Most of the information is half assed, and its dripping with sarcasm on most of the important aspects of the book. however, its an enlightening read and the "government high" and "fashion do's and dont's" are perhaps the reason this book is always open near my toilet Summary: boring... this book wasn't worth the money. it tried way too hard to be edgy and fell far short. Summary: Ack! False drug infomation everywhere! Now, don't get me wrong, I love all of the clever wit and aggressive writing styles. Who cares if VICE doesn't bother editing for even near-proper grammar? What bothers me are the essays from the supposed "drug experts." Sure, some nuggets of truth worm their way into the write ups, but most of the drug information provided is pure urban legend trash. Strychnine has no part in the synthesis of lysergic acid (LSD). Random testing has shown that only about .05% of acid tablets contain any strychnine, almost none of which contained enough to actually cause a physical response. Those jaw aches are a natural reaction the body has to certain drugs like amphetamines, tranquilizers, mescaline and acid. And LSD was not invented during the Vietnam War! Alcohol should NEVER be combined with sedatives (or really any other drug for that matter). Also, condoning the use of anti-depressants in high quantity for recreational effect has got to be the most reckless drug advice I've ever read. For the sake of scientific truth and personal safety, DO NOT TAKE VICE'S DRUG ARTICLES SERIOUSLY! Summary: |
| LATVIAN DREAMS, Knitting From Weaving Charts
Publisher: Schoolhouse Press |
|
| ISBN: 0942018192 List Price: $34.00 Amazon Price: $34.00 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The book made me want to give up the day job This is craft raised to the level of art; mouthwatering. Sweaters (with added socks etc.) mostly two-coloured, mostly knit circular, but I should give special mention to two aspects. One: many of the designs use the all-in-one construction with real innovation, as if an artist had taken a plain 'toile' and painted it without regard to seams, etc, making best use of three dimensions. Second, the book contains pages and pages of charts - not the automatically symmetrical ones you get with fair isle; big, little, corners, bold - for plundering. All I want to do now is knit them and I can't choose which to opt for first. Summary: Terrific technique section, wonderful charts, pretty designs First, for those who are not familiar with Joyce Williams, let me offer my humble opinion that she is one of the most inventive knitters alive today. Joyce has an amazing ability to solve little nagging problems that have been deemed "unsolvable" by the greater universe of knitters. This book is chock full of these solutions. The first 30-plus pages of the book concern techniques - including a nice write up Joyce's great two needle circular method (no more double pointed needles when knitting socks!!!) This part of the book is worth the price all by itself. The bulk of the book are Joyce's designs for a variety of garments, most of which are knit in the fair isle or stranding tradition. These are gorgeous garments. One blessing/caveat -- I was lucky enough to participate in a showing of these garments at Meg Swansen's Knitting Camp and they are very heavy and warm. It's also important to note that Joyce deliberately leaves out needle sizes and yarn amounts for these patterns. Why? Because most of the sizing is accomplished by changing needles and guage. Her instructions on this are clear but the presentation is likely to be disconcerting for knitters who are used to conventional "blind following" of patterns. The final segment of the book is a terrific collection of charts for stranded or textured knitting. This is where the "Latvian" aspect figures into the art. All of these patterns are based on Latvian weaving patterns. The result is nice group of charts (and resulting knitting) that strongly resembles it's Nordic "cousins" but has its own sort of spice. Bottom-line: An absolute keeper for the technique and charts alone. Not recommended for novices or beginners who are heavily reliant on patterns. A wonderful addition for thinking knitters who miss Elizabeth Zimmermann's works. Summary: I waited a long time for this book And was not disappointed. Joyce Williams is a real artist and genius. She's adapted Latvian weaving designs to knitting and...so much more. She has the most innovative techniques for using modules of knitting, I-cord and colors. This is one of the most unique books on knitting, and it's very inspirational. It was worth the wait. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Fantastic book on Shakespeare This winter break I went on a Shakespeare buying spree, and this book is one of the fine gems I found. A large, but fascinating book, this work of great scholarship and excitement takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of Shakespeare, even into rather obscure corners of his works (Trollius and Cressida, Timon of Athens). This book is a must read for any would be deep thinker about Shakespeare. Summary: The New Shakespeareans Shakespeare as Political Thinker is a must for everyone interested in the political thought of William Shakespeare. This reprint will finally allow new comers to become familair with a commonsensical approach to Shakespeare's plays. The introductory chapter by John Alvis is worth the price. Perhaps the best Shakespearean critic alive, Alvis has an uncanny ability to show Shakespeare's moral seriousness without making the bard an unquestioning adherent to any political school or theological creed. Many of the essays that follow are also well done: Jaffa's chapter on Shakespeare's entire corpus, Laurence Berns' meditation on Lear etc. The second printing of Shakespeare as Political Thinker gives hope to those interested in relearning ancient wisdom and pays tribute to its inspiration, Shakespeare's Politics (Allan Bloom).
