Summary: more than one more day
Though not written in real-time, it may as well have been. The writing was done close enough to the event(s) that there might not have been perspective on what Didion was going through w/her husband's death and daughter's illness. BUT - that is somewhat the point: At the time of grief, there is no perspective. She wrote what she was going through *then* and what she was feeling *then*. I find that fairly admirable. To go back and rethink her grief and feelings and put them into another context would have been dishonest.

Does she draw on her's and her husband's previous work? Sure. Does she tie it in nicely to how her past and present have collided? Absolutely.

Didion literally relates her year (ok, year and one day), so I have to say I'm amazed at some of the reviews. Who cares where she ate lunch, stayed at, flew to or knew? It was her experience. Call it namedropping et al, the story is hers and she makes no assumptions that this is how everyone does or should deal w/loss.

Who cares if her daughter was adopted or not - does that change her being a mother? None of it discounts her take at her grief.

This is a fairly quick read. It answers no question - but I'm sure could give insight to grief in others and it shows how one can and does go on, as we all must.
Summary: Death is the universal leveler
I am amazed at the reaction to death by people of privilege. Like Leona Helmsley's infamous observation that "taxes are for the little people", Joan Didion reflects the same fabulistic sentiment about death. How do they arrive at this peculiar notion? Doesn't it speak ironic volumes that her husband's last thought on this earth was to worry that he might have drunk a blended scotch followed by a single malt?
Summary: A Stong Woman is Hard to Find
Admirable female heroines are as rare as hen's teeth so when I come across one I get quite giddy with glee. Joan Didion lives through just about all that life can dish out to someone who is not actually the victim, and she does so with a stoic humanity and grudging bravery that are riveting to this reader. I particularly like the way she takes on the medical establishment, and the rare but piercingly funny bon mots planted here and there throughout the book.

Summary: Quite possibly one of the finest books I've ever read
In addition to telling a gripping story, Foer is blessed by the ability to bring the reader to either laughter or tears with a few chosen words. He has woven historic truth with the truth of spirit to show that human beings create both the glorious and the horrific, sometimes at the same time. And more powerful than redemption or forgiveness is the actual journey toward this end. I marvelled with the turning of each page that such a young person was posessed of such wisdom and such literary craft.
Summary: Everything is Obfuscated
The book started off well enough. I laughed at the translator's bad English. Unfortunately the plot never quite took form, and was interrupted by pointless tales from the shtetl that lacked any coherence or relevance to the "main" story. I kept reading hoping the loose ends would come together, but they didn't.
Summary: Too bad I missed the movie with Elijah Wood-- fun book-- zany
A bizarre look at searching for your heritage...great first novel by Jonathan Safran. Too bad I missed the movie-- must rent the DVD. Okay I'm Eastern European by discent but some people may find it a bit weird to read a novel written in broken English-- at times it may be a bit too much -- like a Saturday Night Live schtick but for anyone raised in a multilingual household-- where at least the grandparents talked part of the time in their native tongue...it will be a blast....Jonathan Safran Foer (even though it is a really a novel) is the main character in this narrative-- he sets out to find the woman who may or may not have saved his grandfather from the Nazis. An old Slavic man and a dog named Sammy Davis and of course Alex, the Ukranian translator lead to a journey that is hard to forget....Black comedy-- comedy and tragedy intertwine ....there's a story within the story and to be honest I kind of skipped over some of that that got tedious to me -- but others may love it. Just look at the picture of the novelist -- a little scrawney guy with wire rims...I can see him now sitting in the back of the broken down 'cab' heading out into the Ukranian countryside with a dog humping his leg -- and his allergies streaming tears....okay so I thought it was hilarious-- if you've ever been to Eastern Europe -- you realize how primitive some of the roads and experiences are. Naive might be a better word....and you feel for them because after all -- if that's where your stock comes from-- you could have been them and vice versa.....you're probably related to the waitress who brings you the wrong desert or the dude trying to buy your hubby's designer jeans...or the old goat trying to be a moneychanger in the side alley...everyone is an entrepreneur in Eastern Europe-- before the Berlin Wall fall they were just black marketeers...now it seems more hopeful than hopeless...but it's still a trip to another land...someday I'll follow my heritage and meet the ancestors in Prague...or at least the people with my same family name ...and I hope my journey is half as fun as and have as bright as Everything is Illuminated....an enjoyable read....especially if you're traveling or are an armchair traveler who has been searching for your own ancestry.

Summary: Grisham Buried in Pop Psychology
Ezra Pickens, North Carolina backwoods lawyer extraordinaire and hardass of Olympian proportions, has been missing for eighteen months and feared dead. When his skeletal reamins are finally found in an abandoned mall, there is no doubt he was murdered. Lawyer son Jackson Workman Pickens, or "Work", stumbles around in some feeble attempt to protect sister Jean, who he believes the perp, and soon finds himself the prime suspect.

John Hart's debut reads like two different novels. In the first half of the novel, I found "Work" simply annoying. I doubt that Hart wanted to make his protagonist such a wimp, but about 100 pages of Work's whining about his childhood, his mean rich daddy, and his pathetic life in general was just grinding me down. OK, so he's not had the model life, and as a result his drinking, adultery, and general shiftlessness is justified. We got all that - let's move on.

And remarkably, Hart does just that. Once past the bitch wife, the gay sister and her wacko girlfriend, and the cop with a grudge, Hart spins a genuinely suspenseful mystery and legal drama, reminiscent of Scott Turow in his early days. The plot thickens, unfolds, takes a couple of entertainingly ugly diversions, and finishes with a John Grisham flourish. Hart has literary skills, no doubt about it, and he spices up his drama with tales of child abuse and murder definitely not for the feint of heart. While off to a slow start, Hart finishes strong, and is definitely a name to watch.

Summary: This book is like Chinese food
This book is like Chinese food - an hour after you put it down, you aren't really satisfied.

It's an average book that could have been much better. One thing that I found annoying was some of the needless vulgarity. The older I get, the more I wonder why descriptive acts need to be put in a book like this.

I heard the author speaking on a talk radio show and figured I'd buy his book, given how interesting the interview was. The interview was better than the book.
Summary: Boring
This book was boring, the dialog was lackluster and the protagonist could not have been more weak and useless. This book was terrible.

Summary: Handy Reference
I bought the "Caring for your Baby:Birth to One" when our son was born and referred to it all the time, so was pleased to find a similar book to take me through the Toddler years. The book is informative, gives practical advice and very useful information about common ailments and how to keep your child safe.

If you have one reference book on caring for your child I would recommend this one.
Summary: State Farm customers get it free...
This is a very useful reference book, with lots of information on child development and illnesses from a trustworthy source. State Farm customers can get it free by contacting their agent.
Summary: Couldn't do without!
This is the greatest book to have if you are having your first baby! I bought it when I had my first son and it calmed a lot of my fears, and gave me great information so I didn't have to pester my doctor (or my mother!). I still reference it all the time with my second baby and everyone of my friends that I have given it to at their baby showers said that it was their favorite and most used gift!

Summary: "A Raisin in the Sun" is great American play that is human and touching.
This play was also required of me on my 10th-grade English class. Boring, right? Not really. I found the story to be inspiring and emotional and the characters realistic, multi-faceted and down-to-earth. Beneatha's loftiness, spontaneity and charming flightiness reminded me very much of my younger sister, which enhanced the realism of the book. The character of Mama was someone I would have liked to meet in real life; simple and ignorant but conventionally wise and hardworking. The story dealt with both the characters' internal and external conflicts, conflicts with money, lovers and family, which in my mind made it very interesting reading. This book outlines a colorful premise on the life of an African American family and describes their fight for their dreams.

Schools have been using this play to get students reading and give them different perspectives. I think this book is for all. Some language...but it's not like no one has heard any badmouthing anyway. I think that it is just a really good play too and that Lorraine Hansberry did a good job just weaving everything together. You can really relate to this story with the dilemmas and questions it rises. And it's not like anything of a complicated story either, you can really decipher it. And last I believe the author wrote from her heart, expressing herself through her work majestically and with realistic emotion regarding the problems of the Younger family could easily have struck a lower middle class black family in the 1950's.

"A Raisin in the Sun" shows the importance of family values during times of racial discrimination. The book teaches us a lesson that nothing should come between family ties. It's definitely one of my favorite classic reads plus the film version featuring Sidney Poitier is great as well.

Summary: Wantin Some Extra Credit!!!!!! WB Period 5
A Raisin in The Sun, by Lorraine Hansberry is a powerful and captivating book. The book sheds light on many issues not only dealt with in African American families but for any American family. There are problems with racism, unemployment, living conditions, and disputes over the way money should be spent are all present in this book and plenty of people can relate to them. The characters in the book are realistic and the reader should be able to find a piece of them in one of the characters. One of the characters that stood out to me in this book was the father Walter Younger. He was a strong man but he also had many weaknesses. He would do anything for his family but that also led him to making wrong decisions that put his family in bad positions. I feel like I can relate to Walter because I know I would go to any length to support my family even if I had to do things that weren't viewed upon as morally right. I feel that this book was a great read and being able to watch the play is an opportunity that should not be missed. I would recommend this book to anyone from the 8th grade and up.
Summary: great play!!!!!!!!!!!111
I thought this was a great play. I usualy dont like reading plsys, well i dont like reading at all, but out of all the plays i have read this one is one of the best

Summary: great cookbook!
After 35 years of cooking, I don't buy cookbooks anymore. I bought this one for my daughter because a friend recommended it. Before I had a chance to give it to her, I looked through it, and the more I looked, the more I was fascinated with this book. It gives detailed information about cooking methods, commom mistakes to avoid, test results for many everyday kitchen products, and much much more. I tried a few of the recipes and they really tasted good. Whether you are just learning how to cook or have been cooking for a long time, this is a great book to have. I will buy this one for myself as well.
Summary: People will be talking about your cooking (but this time it will be all good)
I have had this Cookbook since December and it hasn't failed me once. In mine and my family's opinion the "Big and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie" recipe on Pg.593 is worth the price of the whole book! A bonus for me was the fact that almost every page has a "Test Kitchen Tip" to help improve whatever recipe it is you are making. It also has a good amount of info on what brand of cooking tools work the best and the price of the product and how it preformed (and it's not always the most expensive product that gets the green light!) I would Highly suggest this book to anyone who loves cooking great meals! It's great fo Beginners, intermediates or advanced cooks! Trust me you won't be dissapointed! Amazon has the best price for it too! I sure wish I would have known that before I spent $34.95 for it at Target!
Summary: Great General Purpose Cookbook
This is a terrific all-purpose cookbook. It contains a wide range of recipes, and my family has enjoyed every one we have tried. One thing I really appreciate is that they've included some slightly more advanced techniques aren't included in other basic cookbooks. Brining, for example, is an easy technique that can really improve some of your meat dishes. It's all explained in the cookbook.

The cookbook is similar to Better Homes, or Betty Crocker, but with a little nicer recipes and tips that help you shine in the kitchen. The recipes aren't overly involved, like Joy of Cooking or Gourmet can sometimes be.

The hardcover and spiral is nice. Each divider tab lists all the recipes in that section, which I find a nice convenience. If you know you want veggies, but not sure which, you can scan the recipe list on the divider tab to give you some ideas.

The section on selecting kitchen tools is interesting and could be really useful for a new cook. I also enjoy the ratings of cooking staples sprinkled throughout the book. Some of the recommended products aren't available on the West coast, but most are.

My son took my copy to his first apartment, and he's so happy to have a reference for cooking eggs, veggies, meats, etc. for himself and his room mates. Now I have to order myself a new copy!

Summary: Great read...
I read about these three in some magazine (Essence?) while I was in a bookstore cafe. I went upstairs to browse the book and ended up buying it. I'm so glad that I went to that bookstore just to browse around or I would have never known anything about it. I'd heard of these three from another magazine I subscribe to but never really knew what their deal was. It was very interesting to read about three young men who grew up in the inner city projects of Newark, two of them exposed themselves to crime, all of their manhood was tested, and two went to jail/juvenile hall. But with all those pitfalls, each one of them had a personality that would not let each other fall down. One was an activist, the next was a serious hard worker, and the third an optimistic motivator who stayed out of trouble. These guys were so good for each other. It was interesting to read about their sides of the story in a conversational tone that showcases their down-to-Earth personalities, their mild secrets that the other two will enjoy reading, and even a couple love interests would probably be flattered too.

I think it's really cool that they gave back to their community. My only bone to pick was that only one of them explained his first in depth experience with being a doctor and having a "situation with some blood." I felt kinda cheated that I didn't get to hear the other two in telling about their first challenge as doctors/dentists. I also wanted to hear Rameck's side of the rap career story. Somehow I felt like Rameck's story was still slightly closed, but either way, great book!
Summary: All for one, and one for all
What happens when three young African-American men from the projects in Newark, NJ make a pact to become doctors? With determination, discipline, perseverance, a little luck and Divine intervention, and each other's support, they become doctors. The Pact is the true story of three such young men, inspired by George Jenkins' dream of becoming a dentist. The doctors alternate telling their stories of living in mostly single parent homes in neighborhoods rife with crack heads and stray bullets. The three became friends at University High, a magnet school for gifted and talented students. Their senior year, a recruiter from Seton Hall's Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Plus Program, part of an Equal Opportunity Program created to make higher education accessible for poor students, spoke and rekindled George's interest in dentistry. He convinced the others to apply to Seton Hall, attend college, and medical school together. Their pact, similar to the Three Musketeers "All for one, and one for all," enabled each to achieve more than they could have ever imagined. The Pact provides a powerful message of friendship's positive influence.

The importance of friendship is the overall theme of these doctors' story. Each agrees that life would be very different had they not agreed to support each other. They also acknowledge the support of significant others-family members, teachers, counselors, even their n'er-do-well friends. The power of their pact, knowing that the others would be disappointed, or striving to keep up with each other is what kept them alive, or from becoming statistics in the NJ penal system. Their friendship didn't end at the conclusion of medical school, but continues today. They honor their accomplishments and the people and circumstances that enabled their success through the Three Doctors Foundation, a nonprofit organization that creates medical/health opportunities in inner-city communities. They also hope that their story will inspire others.
Summary: Punch line? We all have potential... even if we punch?
The Pact is an interesting story. Three young black men from Newark leave the streets and head to medical and dental school. They depend on each other for support... this is "The Pact."

I'm glad they were successful and hope they will continue to be successful. I am discouraged that they did this while they, on occasion, beat people, stabbed people, sold drugs, and stole things from stores. This is inspiring? What is the message here?

Break the bones of a white boy if he is staring at you (page 134)? Steal a sweatshirt because somebody told you it was easy (page 137)? Armed robbery (page 93)? "I jabbed the crackhead lightly in the thigh right under his butt and quickly closed the blade, hoping I hadn't hurt him" (page 81), after punching and kicking a helpless person for 20 minutes, wrote Rameck.

None of these messages were inspiring. I'd say these doctors have a lot to answer for, and these answers are not in this book.

Summary: A Piece of Cake
OH MY! This book is fantastic! Such an eye-opener. I would recommened it 10 times over!
Summary: A Piece of Cake: A Memoir
I truly enjoyed this book. It kept my attention, it was an easy read and most importantly, it gave me a better understanding of the life of people who unfortunately get involved in alcohol, gangs or drugs--the "street" terms used for drugs or gangs, why people get involved in gangs and drugs and what affect it has on people and their family. What's even more awesome is the fact that through everything Cupcake endured, she went on to become an attorney. This book (and Cupcake Brown) is a definate motivator for anyone regardless of their idiosyncrasies. I highly recommend this book.............
Summary: consider me inspired
This is obviously a book to recommend to those living in poverty, experiencing drug addiction, living with/through memories of rape and abuse. However, it's reach isn't limited to those people. I believe this memoir is an inspiration to anyone who reads it, regardless of your circumstances in life. It is the true story of a very brave woman who overcame every obstacle to achieve greatness and earn respect as an attorney, motivational speaker, and now - author. I have not experienced the same hardships and obstacles that Cupcake Brown suffered, but I (along with every other being on earth) have had to jump hurdles of my own. Currently, I am working full-time as a paralegal to pay my way through law-school (evening classes). I am in my last (4th) year of study and every day I wonder how I'll make it through to the end. Cupcake Brown has showed me, through the account of her amazing life, that I will achieve my goals if I work hard and simply have a little faith. Read the memoir & be inspired.
