Summary: Architectual Graphic Standards February 23, 2006
The most up to date technical information for the architectual and construction community. A must have source of information.
Summary: Regarding 1934 reprint of 1st edition: good resource
This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to understand traditional building materials and methods. The printing is excellent. The actual plates from the original work are valuable not only for the technical information they contain, but the artistry with which they were composed is superb.

If you already have a copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition (perhaps even 4th?, but I only have seen the former), this book is superfluous. The material contained herein is essentially the same and in the next two additions. If you can find a copy of the 3rd edition, I would recommend that to anyone looking for an old Architectural Graphics Standards, as it contains some additional information.

About the contents: This book is particularly useful regarding masonry construction, including terra-cotta facades. It also shows traditional woodwork details, but only to the extent that the modern AGS editions do--that is to say, there is something to be desired. If that is your interest, there are numerous other books on that subject available on Amazon (just search for them).
Summary: Architectural Graphic Standards
About every thing you need to know about architecture, drawing architechture, and understanding architecture. This is a valuable addition and source of information for my architectural library.

Summary: A must-read for tech leads and architects
Martin Fowler is making a name for himself as a luminary in the area of Software Development. He writes very practical books that have a wonderful blend of theory (e.g. design patterns, UML, refactoring etc.) with experience as you can tell he has applied many if not all of these patterns in real-life projects. This book is an exposition into architectural building blocks that will help every architect and tech lead / senior developer build code that is more extensible and easily maintained (among other things). I found the chapters on O/R structural and behavioral patterns particularly enlightening. By reading this book your "toolbox" of solutions rapidly expands and you get to focus more on the business problem at hand rather than infrstructural "plumbing" things (e.g. how do I build my objects when my data is in a relational table). Very highly recommended - and definitely one of the top 5 software books I have *EVER* had the pleasure to read.
Summary: Patterns for Business Applications
I loved this book! It was exactly what I was looking for when I went searching for patterns that would help with a new business application. It provides alternative solutions to the typical implementation problems associated with business systems, both from a design standpoint and from the perspective of the implementation. The alternatives are compared and weighed in light of the execution environment and cost of implementation, with a comparison of advantages and disadvantages, along with Martin's recommendations. I had the feeling that the comparisons and recommendations were made not based purely upon a theoretical optimum, but also based upon practical and real-world experience with these patterns.
Summary: Great Learning Resource
If you are already well-versed in architectural patterns, you probably won't find much to interest you here. But if you are new to the subject, this is a great book. It goes beyond design patterns to show how to combine and implement the patterns in the real world. In particular, the 100-page tutorial that starts the book is a great intro to the subject.

If I had to recommend two books to someone wanting to learn OOP, I'd recommend 'Head First Design Patterns', then this book.

Summary: very good all-around reference
I primarily work as a structural-architectural engineer and am becoming more and more involved in civil-site work. This handbook is exactly what I was looking for in terms of something that would quickly get me "up to speed" in the fundamentals of civil-site design.
Of course, no single book could (or should) be thought of as a substitute for the experience and mentoring received from seasoned professionals in a design office, but this one has enough technical explanation and details to get you going with confidence.
I choose this one over the Colley book (reviewed both before making purchase) as Land Development Handbook has more of the technical info that engineers would seek.
Summary: Difficult to follow!
I am in a class at Community College of Baltimore County and we are using this book at this time. Our whole class along with the Professor find this book to be very difficult to follow. The book constantly repeats itself making it extremely boring to read and is not fluent at all. They have examples that reference charts that are 3-5 pages apart from the problem being discussed the formulas you almost have to figure out for yourself how they are used and there are alot of typos.
I recomend burning this book!!!!!!!
Summary: A Must Have Pub
Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it. Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It provides macro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format. More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it. Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.

ps - Almost everyone of my fellow employees that has used the book has purchased their own, find someone you know who has a copy and check it out for yourself.

Summary: Guide for construction
Every engineer must have one copy of this book. This is an updated edition of the previous ones.Very detailed description and pictures about construction.
Summary: Good book
It's relatively well written and good for starter who are new to building construction.
Summary: Surpassed expectations
Being a student in Construction Management Edward Allen's book was assigned as our text book. The course entitled materials and methods is intended to teach future construction manajors about the wide variety of materials on the market today as well as tradional methods of constructing with these materials.
The book is chalked full of knowledge most of which would take a person hours, even days of research to uncover with other sources. It is very comprehensive. If you are active in the comercial building construction this book is a must for your refrence shelf. Residential construction owners/workers would gain considerable knowledge from the book it has plenty of useful information however I feel the book is leaning more towards heavy commercial.

Summary: A wealth of insights and tips on how to construct - and maintain - a natural garden pool
NATURAL SWIMMING POOLS: INSPIRATION FOR HARMONY WITH NATURE offers a wealth of insights and tips on how to construct - and maintain - a natural garden pool. Surprisingly they are less costly to maintain than traditional chemical pools, save on water, and beautify a garden area more than less ecological offerings. Full-page color photos throughout illustrate such pools, surveying a range of designs and options and discussing biological conditioning, ecology, regeneration zones, and construction choice alike. It's the multitude of options and in-depth coverage on these options, paired with the color photo coverage, which makes NATURAL SWIMMING POOLS an extraordinary survey.

Summary: Long overdue book on an overdue topic
I have been keenly interested in the topic of natural swimming pools for about 5 years, but have been frustrated by the lack of information in English on the topic (there are several books in German - the homeland of the concept - but only a single manual in English).
Mr. Littlewood's book added substantially to my knowledge, gleaned from various websites, a handful of articles and research into conventional swimming pools, ponds and lake management.
But the book's value lies not so much in the (limited) technical information it provides as it does in thoroughly introducing the concept and presenting it beautifully. Mr. Littlewood is a distinguished landscape architect, and his book presents natural pools, in hundreds of beautiful pictures, in the context of landscaping.
But he doesn't focus solely on the aesthtic aspect. You'll also learn why these pools work so well without chemicals and concrete, making them environmentally friendly and a pleasure on the skin and eyes when you swim in them, and why they require less maintenance than conventional pools.
It's possible that some hard-headed American readers will be put off here and there by the author's environmental leaning and not-always-critical stance to the theory and practice of the natural swimming pool's Austrian and German pioneers, most of whom now offer patented systems that they are primarily interested in marketing.
But these are minor quibbles. The fact is, natural swimming pools are practical and make sense, and their pros (water quality, aesthetics, ecology, reduced maintenance, winter aesthetics/use) far outweigh their cons (greater risk of contracting water-borne illness, greater space requirements). Some 5000 have been built in Europe, including dozens (it might be up to hundreds) of public pools that satsify stringent German health requirements.
I think anyone interested in ecological or simply innovative or beautiful landscaping would enjoy this book.
But if you're interested in building a pond (especially for swimming) or a swimming pool (especially with alternative water sanitation), this book is an absolute must-have.
The author of this review is an American ex-pat who has lived in central Europe 14 years.
Summary: A visual and informative masterpiece!
I have been interested in the idea of natural swimming pools or swimming ponds for years, but I found information almost impossible to obtain. Until now. Littlewood's book is the best resource out there, hands down. Anyone interested in creating such a paradise in there own backyard will find this book invaluable. This is a 200+ page coffee table style book with hundreds of amazing photos. Friends not even interested in building their own love sitting down just to browse.

Summary: Read before you practice
I have practiced interior design for over 20 years and still found this book to be invaluable. The information about legal ramifications and insurance coverage was enlightening but also sobering. It's a must read for any design firm principal or freelance designer.
Summary: Get It!
This book reads like a friend whispering all the good advice and secrets of the interior design business in your ear. I wish my Professional Practices class had used this text. It's a lot of information but Christine Piotrowski truly takes you by the hand and lets you know what you need to prepare for in a budding interior design business as well as how the interior design business is done in general. I will be referencing this book again and again. A huge thank you and bravo to Christine Piotrowski
Summary: Must Have!
This book was used for both Business Practice For Interior Design & Sales and Marketing. I had no need to consult any other source. "This is a great book" THANKS..

Summary: Perfectly confusing!
Too much information presented in a complicated format. It has it all but not a book to learn from. I don't recomend this to those who really want to understand the computer architecture and be able to design and calculate. Very difficult to understand and make sense of problems.
Summary: Thorough book, tough questions
This book is excellent - I've never seen another computer science book of its type or quality. It is essentially a hardware book for non-EE types; however, the authors literally leave no stone unturned (in chapter 5, for example, they state, "we have only included examples of memory designs that have found their way into commercial implementations"). If a computer has ever, in the history of computing, used a particular design approach, that approach is detailed and compared carefully against all other existing approaches. When I first saw the size of the book, I was amazed that anybody could fill so much text with any information (useful or not) - after reading the first few chapters, I was amazed that they could fit so much information into such a relatively small space!

I have to agree with the other reviewers about the exercises - perhaps 5-10 "warm up" exercises (with answers) before the hardcore exercises presented by the authors might have helped solidify some of the concepts before being hit with the post-PHD level exercises they throw at you.

Also, they drive me crazy by insisting that the word data is plural (e.g. "the data are ready"). It probably technically is, but none of the rest of us talk like that. You should stop, too.
Summary: text is excellent if you had read "computer design and organization", but the exercises are so confusing
like many of the guys who have written a review of this book said, it is so confusing in the exersices, you took the most of the time trying to understand what they ask you to do, and the solutions then are wide open cause you can make a lot of assumptions there!, despite of this problem i liked the text because it is a follow through of the previos level (a more basic book for understanding the prinpiples) "computer organization and design", so , i you have already read this basic book, the quantitative approach is very useful, if you've not, then you probably would have too many questions.
