Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Must for Anyone Consindering getting the Lap-Band I found this book to be very easy to read as well as very informative. He managed to keep the medical and surgical details at a level that the lay person could understand, while being very detailed. This book covers the surgery procedure from pre-op doctor's visits, working with your insurance company and suggestions for self-pay, all the way through the surgery itself, how to eat for the next month, and the post surgery lifestyle. Details include the surgery itself, how the fills are done and possible complications during or after surgery. I think anyone who is considering the band and the people closest to them should read this book before hand. Summary: The best Lap-Band info for before and after surgery!!! Dr. Ortiz explains everything about the surgery in his book in a very easy to read and understandable approach. It is divided into sections so you don't have to read everything at once. I have not been banded yet but he will be doing my surgery on June 28th. Even if he is not your surgeon, this book is very informative and answers all of your questions. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Interesting but Unbalanced The book was interesting in that it tries to analyze a trend that IS puzzling and creepy. However, it's extremely unbalanced - what about all of us who like to look good but also use our brains and ability and don't care about strippers or porn stars? Not one such woman is presented in this book. Because of this lack of balance, the book makes you feel depressed. It offers no alternative ideas or models of women to admire or emulate or give you hope. You would think that only raunchy self-hating women exist in America. How about talking to some of the rest of us? Another thing that interested me was that she talks about the raunch trend like it's totally new. I could sympathize with plenty of the things she said women or girls TODAY are feeling. When HAVEN'T looks been emphasized? When HAVEN'T women tried to look sexy? Certainly sex and sexiness have pushed past limits in the past. But European cultures have had time periods where sex was equally shallow, and just as much emphasis was put on female beauty. Levy views the sexiness issue from one perspective; there are others. Some women want to look good AND be smart, which isn't always easily accepted. Some women want to become more like men by caring less, so they won't get hurt. There are so many reasons women use sexiness, and Levy basically looks at one of them, the most ham-handed and clumsy one. The writing style IS choppy, as another reader pointed out, and sometimes I couldn't tell whether Levy was saying something was good or bad. Also as another reader pointed out, parents are completely absent from her analysis. Do they no longer exist in high school students' houses? How could little girls dress in tank tops and "belts" without their parents paying and seeing? This too was another area in which balance was sadly lacking and detracted from the point. And the conclusion! It zips along like she suddenly got bored. The book is interesting but ultimately the one-sidedness of it made me feel like the goal was to grab attention by talking about a trend that grabs attention, making Levy no better than the women she profiled. Summary: Too judgemental - Ruth Williams In Female Chauvinist Pig, Ariel Levy asserts that, despite women's struggles for equality and rights, many women of today's society have taken the position of the male to an extreme level, where they begin to oppress not only other women, but also themselves, by submitting to a mentality and behavior that oppresses their gender. Rather than develop a new sense of what it means to be a "liberated woman", women simply jump on the bandwagon that men have been riding all along, following the principle "why try to beat them when you can join them." Levy tackles the problem of the disturbing rise of teenage pregnancies, widespread pornography, plastic surgery to look like "Barbie", and the overall growing attitude of women that promiscuity equals womanhood. She describes her firsthand experience of exploring the shoot of the popular video "Girls Gone Wild", which she believes is an exploitation of women. However, because these women claim to like exhibiting themselves, how can anyone argue with them? As Levy and others point out, nobody forces these women to take off their clothes in front of a camera so how can it be exploitation? Levy argues that the problem is deeper than that as many women have been made to believe that such "freedom" is true freedom. There is pressure from society that a woman conform and "be free". If she doesn't, then she is labeled as stuck up, uptight, bitter, sexually deprived and the list goes on. Therefore, the choice of making a sex video or anything close is underlined by the desire to be accepted by society. While Levy makes some excellent points and provides disturbing facts about our society and its expectations, limitations and requirements of "what a woman is", I could not seem to find a proposed solution. She talks about the problems and the causes, but offers a very vague explanation of how to accomplish the goal of truly liberating women. Unfortunately, by the end of the book, Levy does present herself as one of those women who are doing the very things she is supposed to be against. By placing the blame on women who mistreat women, she makes the assumption that the mistreated women are simply sheep and have no mind of their own, thus condemning most of her gender. While it is possible that this may be the case for some, I find it somewhat hypocritical for her to make a judgment on a whole gender based on a few interviews. Also, her book is extremely exclusive, geared mainly towards women like her - white, middle or upper class, women. Her observation of the struggles of female teenagers (again, from a very exclusive background) and their sexuality in the face of society is perhaps the only well developed portion of the book, that offers not only the cause of the problem but also a well thought out proposition of a solution. Her writing style is also very choppy and does not flow well. It seems that she simply took a few of her editorials, put them together, inserted a "connecting line" or two, and called it a book. Perhaps the main problem lies in her trying to tackle so many problems. She jumps from feminism to lesbianism to teenage promiscuity. Her conclusion, although well written, does nothing to help tie the book together, leaving one with the feeling that too much information has been absorbed but without much depth. Summary: What kind of culture are we marinating in? If you haven't spent time in teen/college culture lately, "Female Chauvinist Pigs" will wake you up to the direction we're headed. Young women now think it's normal to want to emulate porn stars. Those twisted values are starting to saturate our culture and reach younger girls each day through products like thong underwear made in girls' size 10. While boys and men are a key part of this equation, Levy's book focuses on females who have been co-opted into "chauvinistic" behavior toward other women. I am proud to be a progressive feminist, and the saddest thing of all is that some young women think the "Girls Gone Wild" raunch is about empowermenet rather than exploitation. (Who knew I'd feel so old school before age 40?) The writing in "Female Chauvinist Pigs" could use some polishing, and some ideas called out for more exploration. That said, Levy's work provides an important cultural critique. Still skeptical? A quick browse through the teen universe of My Space will validate Levy's ideas. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Not recommended for self beginners in the course Excellent contents. Or can say self contained book. Very less practicle examples. For beginners who want to study course on his own it is strongly not recommended. http://www.geocities.com/ratnikgandhi Summary: Maybe for class but not for personal exploration... I agree with a previous review that this book is not good for individuals. Solutions to the excersizes are only available to educators. If the book is assigned for a class and the teacher has access to the solutions and can coach the student through the excersizes this is probably a great book because of it's depth. It is probably also a good reference book for those already familar with the subject. However if you are like me and were looking for a strong book that will help a motivated individual learn game theory this book is not for you. I have tried many of the excersizes and I am still not positive that I my answers are correct. The material in the book is very complex but accessible, that is not the problem. The problem is the lack of development because I can not go over my answers to the excersizes and see what I did right and what I did wrong... Summary: An essential course in game theory. This was one of the first books I read in Game Theory, and definitely the hardest. Those who want a gentle introduction to the concepts of modern game theory might do better with a simpler text such as Gibbons. That said, there is no substitute for quality. The depth of analysis is entirely necessary to get to the meat of the theory. Osborne and Rubinstein write extremely well, softening the blows of some of the more complicated concepts. Their own substantial publication records in the Game Theory literature do much to recommend their version of analysis over others. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: An Obvious Classic But . . . Let me start out by acknowledging that this is THE BOOK that started Game Theory as it exists today. While Bayesian statistics are an obvious precursor, everyone agrees that von Neumann's and Morgenstern's work was ground breaking. That said, this is not the best written Game Theory text out there. Like all seminal works, it suffers from the basic fact that we've learned a lot of new things since the time it was written. Many people have gone on to build and expand on the insights contained in this book, especially in the area of bargaining and cooperative game theory. This is a very impressive book to keep on your shelf, and the discussion of poker and the role of bluffing is very interesting, but, owing largely to the 60+ years that have passed since its initial publication, it's not the best reference work or study material available. Another word of warning: The review below is correct that the level of math that you must understand to fully appreciate this book is quite substantial. This book is more for the mathematically sophisticated who want to develop an appreciation for the origins of game theory. Summary: Landmark work but heavy going I'm not even sure I'm qualified to pass judgement on this book, but what I understand, I give 5 stars without hesitation. The authors discuss almost every class of game (2-person, 3-person, zero-sum, non-zero-sum, etc.) and even a very simplified version of poker. You basically have to be a mathematician to get full value from this book. This book is absolutely full of equations and complex proofs. For a beginner with little math, I'd recommend Game Theory by Morton Davis, or for someone with some university math I'd recommend Games and Decisions by Luce and Raiffa. However, if your math is good, you might as well go straight to this book, which started the whole field of game theory. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Tranquility in a box.... These cards are the perfect way to get your daily SARK dosage. They are so warming and uplifting. I love to give them to friends in cards. Their inspriting words and colorful design make them a pefect little gift for the special people in your life. Summary: Roll Down A Grassy Hill. Eat Mangos Naked. Nap On! "Your real vision is immeasurably valuable and I dare you to let it out! Let us all see what you have made real from your dreams and imaginations. We are waiting to see." --SARK (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) I own and have reviewed many inspirational decks, but I have never seen one like the Juicy Living Cards! I had never heard of SARK (Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy) until a few weeks ago, but the women who were talking about her work were absolutely gushing. "Who is this woman with a funny name?", I thought. Now I know. SARK is an artist and author of 11 books, and has produced more than 200 products to inspire creative living. She believes in inviting someone dangerous to tea, eating mangoes naked, and living juicy. What is living juicy, you may ask? According to one of her brightly colored water-color cards: Living Juicy Means: rolling down a bright grassy hill, sleeping all day to stay in a dream, definitely taking your shoes off at the beach. Buying flowers that make you gasp. Find those places inside you that jump for joy and do things that bring out your best, most magic self! The text on the 50 cards in this delightful deck look like hand written script, and the illustrations are either lush watercolors or whimsical cartoons (the cards are a matte finish). Some words are even circled (you know, like we did when we were kids when passing a note to a classmate in order to emphasize the importance of a word), and accompany gorgeous watercolor illustrations. Every card is different. I laughed out loud at a few of the cards ("You are a delicious succulent human bean"), and sorted my favorites to include in this review. It was over half the deck. I can't exactly share all of the delightful gems of wisdom, wonderment, and inspiration on these cards, but I can share a few! One card shows an outline of a figure in bed, with Let Sleep Heal You on the blanket. When you turn the card over, there's a blue/green/purple water-color wash with We Are Not The Things We Do written in pale yellow. Another card features a blue and purple watercolor border, depicting a clothesline. On the line hangs "cozy socks", "perfect pillow", "lucky pajamas", and "magic blanket". Underneath are the words Our lives are filled with gorgeous moments, the smell of clothes dried in the sun is one of these. Relax, and let moments like these seep into your soul. On the back of the card, a whimsical cup with rising steam says Measure Time By Mugs Of Tea. A smiling blond woman holding a bouquet says I bring you gorgeous flowers to stand beside your gorgeous self on yet another card--the back awash in gentle green with the pale yellow words Go to where you want to be, and the resources will follow. One of my favorites is a "prayer pie" that says: May you unfold willingly May you be truly nourished May peace be in your every step May gratitude fill you May you reach others with your radiant heart Sometimes, we just don't give ourselves permission to let out the magical child within, let alone to love imperfectly, rest, and "eat impossibly delicious cake" (that's what you eat when you invite someone dangerous to tea, you see). If you find it difficult to give yourself permission to sing a song of surrender, stop doing (just for right now), dance with color, relax, risk the healing, play outside, take a leap of faith, or write your life so that others may be illuminated, then let SARK do it for you with these uplifting cards. (To see 6 images from this deck, visit the Reviews--Decks section at JanetBoyer.com) Summary: New Perspectives for a More Spontaneous Life Juicy Living Cards are reminders of living exuberantly and joyfully, especially when you feel stuck or crabby. The cards help give you permission to "Be How You Actually Are." Draw a card randomly, and let serendipity guide you in gaining a new perspective. Remember, it only takes a second to shift into a new place!" ~SARK Susan Ariel Rainbow Kennedy is a best-selling author, speaker, teacher and artist. She has designed 50 cards to show us how to live a more spontaneous life. Each whimsical card presents a powerful new way to look at our lives. Living Juicy is a way to say that you are allowed to roll down a bright grassy hill, sleep all day to stay in a dream or take your shoes off at the beach. You could also buy flowers, find places inside yourself that make you happy or do things that bring out your magical inner creature. The message also seems to be about letting out our inner child, the nurturing woman and the sexy goddess. Some of my favorite cards included: Front of Card: "Invite Someone Dangerous To Tea" - on this card you are encouraged to fling yourself into story telling and tea sipping. Dangerous tea also includes delicious chocolate cake! Front of Card: Your Dreams Need YOU to Make Them Real SARK's cards show a sense of exuberance and joy and she also likes "naps and dreaming." These cards do really give you permission to just "play or relax." A card that says: "Stop Doing" might encourage you to pull out a meditation or yoga DVD. "The Inspiration Guide" is a fun idea. After you read: "Open a book to any page let that paragraph inspire you," you might go find a book and actually try this activity. Her idea reminds me of books by Carol Bolt where you open to a page and there is an answer for each question you have asked. The "Being a Succulent Wild Woman" card is rather cute. Here, SARK encourages us to eat mangoes, be rare and eccentric, discover your own goodness and paint your soul. This set of cards would be perfect to give to any of your friends with a bunch of flowers or you could even give individual cards away, post them at your office or leave them here or there to brighten up the world. You might need two or more boxes! :) One to keep and lots to give away. ~TheRebeccaReview.com Summary: |
