Summary: Interesting...
First of all the research that went into this book is astounding. Both his resources and grasp of geopolitics seem limitless. This book is choc full of (very often cited) information. And to his credit, Ruppert says right from the start that he is merely formulating a THEORY of what happened based on the the resources available to him.

Now, The Form:

Since there is SO much data here, I find him going off on long and hyper-detailed arguments where at the end of the chapter, I have no clue (until the end of the book) as to where this fit in to his final, meta argument. In fact, I never knew precisely what his argument was until the end of the book.

For example; for a while he will talk about the CIA and drugs and then he talks about peak oil and then he talks about US foriegn policy in Asia and so on and so on... Its all very interesting but but not entirely clear where he is heading with it all.

The Content:

If I understand him correctly, basically 9/11 was no accident. Worse, it was orchestrated by a handful of people in power as a pretext for taking control of the Middle East and it's oil because, (Surprise Surprise!), its about to run out.

Personnally I can't swallow the idea that the CIA (no matter how corrupt) and al Qaeda worked together for 9/11. Its even more absurd a notion than as Saddam working with al Qaeda.

However, did certain people in power know that an attack was eminate and allowed it to 'go down' for a geopoltical ends? Perhaps. Did Mossad, know? They would have to have been stupid not to have know, and Mossad is far from stupid.

The thing is, one could gather thousands of documents supporting any theory you choose, (especially with a notoriously opaque White House) but in the end it is still just speculation.
Summary: A Useful Method for Evaluating Amazon Customer Reviews
Quick Version of My Review (and method of evaluating reviews):
Read all the negatives and decide if they sound reasonable and persuasive. I did, and they were not enough to dissuade me from buying this book. It arrived yesterday, and I've been enjoying it thoroughly since then. I'm happy to have disregarded the negative reviews.

Full Version:
As a person who spends a great deal of time using a computer for work, it is inevitable that on the occasional break I also use it for personal reasons such as shopping. Early on, it became apparent to me that one of the most useful methods for evaluating a product was using the customer reviews--but in a very specific manner; that manner being, read the negative reviews *first.*

In my experience, doing so will help you save a great deal of time and potentially, frustration. By reading the negative reviews first, I am typically able to answer a very important question quickly. That question is, "Does the problem lie with the product/service in question, or with the end user/reviewer?"

A great example of the usefulness of this sort of examination would be examining the reviews for nearly any technology product. Any tech company that sells products to the general public is forced to dedicate an extraodinary amount of resources in dealing with the ignorance of the general public and their inability to effectively problem solve. Do a quick search on Google regarding tech support issues, and you'll almost always find (like all tech companies have found) that the single greatest issue with any product is user error. A great example for the flip side of the same coin would be the Apple iPod. A device that is so simple that a person with severely impaired mental capacity is able to use and enjoy it. While the iPod is undeniably a great product, it is not the standard by which all others should be evaluated. If that degree of product usability were required for everything prior to their release, then we'd see a massive reduction in the variety of goods, as well as an enormous slowdown in their rate of development/deployment. Not everybody needs or wants a product to be simplified to such a large degree.

The point here being, a lot of people are perfectly willing to leave a negative review, completely disregarding the possibility that the problem is not with the product or service, but with themselves.

So, I have found that when evaluating a product or service, a quick scan of the negative reviews is often the very best source of information for what I can expect. If the negative reviewers have objective complaints (like: "the battery life is only 2 hours on a full charge when it was advertised to be 8 hours"), and they are consistent and overwhelming then it I often choose to respect the experience of others and avoid that product. However, if the negative reviewers have primarily subjective complaints (like: "this is hard to use," or "I don't like it") then I have to attempt to determine how much the reviewer is like myself. Most of the time, those negative reviews are from people who seem to be, in my opinion at least, unqualified to be reviewing the product in question.

This method has proven very useful, and I've found myself to be very pleased with the purchases I've made based upon reviews posted on the internet. I think for anybody considering the purchase of this book, it would be a particularly instructive exercise and a productive use of your time. Read the negative reviews first and ask yourself:

1. Did this person acutally read the book? (surprisingly, it appears several negative reviews were from people that had *never* read it)

2. Does it appear this person had a complete grasp of the materials presented?

3. Does this person appear capable of providing objective insights into the quality of the material, or are they primarily reacting to it?

4. Does this person clearly express their ideas, applying a thought process (and using a vocabulary) that I can identify with?

By this point you should have a pretty good grasp of whether or not the review is credible and if it is useful to you personally. Now this probably is not a novel solution, and I do not claim to be the first person to apply it. But in my cursory examination of the negative reviews for this book, I did not find them to be overwhelmingly credible or persuasive. Any negative reviews consisting of one or two lines only were discarded summarily since they consist of nothing but opinion--typically one that was poorly reasoned and expressed. Longer reviews were read and considered. Jill Malter's review sounds too personal for me to take seriously--she sounds sincere and I have the impression that she may be a very likable person--but her review is full of emotion, the type of reaction that reveals more of a dogmatic *reaction* to the book than a thoughtful rejection of it. Harold D. Smith provides a more thoughtful, objective and nuanced review--one that I look forward to comparing with my own experience.

This sort of book requires you to intentionally assume a highly skeptical position and to evaluate the concepts and "proof" presented with a critical eye. You have to be able to maintain a certain level of personal indifference, particularly regarding any potentially dogmatic beliefs you may hold about the virtue of governments in general, and of the American government in particular. And you have to be patient. This is not the sort of material you can easily race through and expect to have given it a fair, but critical reading.

If you can do those things, I'd recommend it. One thing, however, is certain: You will get a good mental workout (if you are up to it). If you cannot, chances are very good that you too will feel like those who gave this book an unearned negative review. And like those readers, the problem will not have been with the material per se, but perhaps with a reader who is unable to master it.
Summary: The truth is knocking...
I currently purchased this book with cash from my local bookstore because of some "problems" posted by another reviewer of a similar book (the book was stopped at a nearby military base for a short period before being delivered.) I didn't want to take any chances.

The information in this book is nothing short of explosive and, though I am only 160 pages into it, it has officially burst my bubble (a bubble manufactured by the mainstream media's reluctance to be straight with the American people.)

This book, with so many verifiable references, is perfect for us "factinistas" who champion the truth. I believe the American people can handle the truth.

The American people may not be so outraged about oil company profits if they knew that oil company exec's were not just pillaging the American's people's pocketbooks to buy more yachts and summer homes - they're doing it because they need excess profits to invest in alternative fuel sources so that they don't go bankrupt.

As long as American's refuse to see what is right in front of their faces, as long as their realities consist of only what the mainstream media CHOOSES to show them, the American people will continue to be misled and Peak Oil will force the American way of life to become (gasp!) negotiable.

Wake up people and read this book!

Summary: Corporate Information Strategy and Management: Text and Cases
This was required in my MBA class and it is one of the worst books I have ever read. This book is so dull and lifeless it should be removed from all academic institutions.
Summary: A Manual that IT Executives can use throughout their careers.
This book has several features that roll into a very useful action guide and reference manual. IT executives should keep this book on their desk, and refer to it every time they have a significant decision to be made.

The book covers the IT field at the business level, not at the detailed technical level. It treats the information management field from strategy formulation by the business, to operation and retirement of the IT asset.

In particular, at the end of each chapter are a series of 10-20 questions that any executive should ask every time she or he has to make judgements or decisions about IT. These questions can be used and re-used throughout an entire career, and will enhance the individual's performance.
Summary: Horrible. The worst.
This book is horrendous. A class I took required it. I hope I never have to review another book from HBS or these authors. This book belongs in the garbage, not taking up space on a bookshelf. There could not possibly be a more poorly written textbook on the topic.

I paid $97.00 for this newly released book. Pages 23-54 are missing and I have little time to deal with a complaint and return process. In skimming the book, it gives a basic intro, overview of computer hardware/software, data management; applications, project management, and future directions. This information is available in less expensive textbooks.

Summary: An excellent textbook
This is a classic engineering text on acoustics for upper division college students. It first appeared in 1950. And now it is back fifty years later in a fourth edition. In the meantime, the original two authors have passed away. However, Coppens and Sanders have done a fine job in keeping the book up-to-date.

Plenty of exercises have been added, and answers to many odd-numbered problems are in the back of the book. I think it is an excellent introduction to the field (yes, I expect you to have studied calculus and differential equations as an underclassman). It's my favorite of the classic engineering acoustics textbooks.

Two new chapters have been added in this edition, one on nonlinear acoustics and the other on shock waves. That's a very good idea. If I were teaching an acoustics class with an earlier edition of the book, I'd refer students to Landau Volume 6 (Fluid Mechanics) to get some of this missing information.

Actually, I wish the authors had added a couple more chapters, one on ultrasonics and another on instruments of music. That still would not cover all of acoustics, but I feel these topics are fairly important.

Anyway, I really like the book, and I'd be happy to teach a class using it.
Summary: Not an introductory text
This text in not an introductory work, it is geared toward upper division college or graduate level engineering work. By this I am referring to the math level in the book. If you are not willing to work with partial differential equations, integrals, dot products, cross products and dell operators stay away from this book, it is intended for engineering students and not for audio, broadcast, or film students looking for a greater understanding of sound/acoustics.

Here is a list of the chapters:
Fundamentals of vibration; Transverse motion - the vibrating string; Vibrations of bars; The two-dimensional wave equation: vibrations of memberanes and plates; The acoustic wave equation and simple solutions; Transmission phenomena; Absorption and attenuation of sound waves in fluids; Radiation and reception of acoustic waves; Pipes, cavities, and waveguides; resonators, ducts, and filters; Noise, signal, detection, hearing, and speech; Environmental acoustics; Architectural acoustics; Transduction; Underwater acoustics.

Summary: OK, but better texts available
Personally, I was disappointed by the fourth edition of this venerable text, for it has become increasingly mathematical and problem oriented. If you like sitting down and whiling away your afternoon with a problem set -- this is the text for you. But if instead you wish to study acoustics through a pedagogical method that is more verbal and graphical in nature -- better texts are available.

Indeed, in my opinion, prior editions (1950, 1962, 1981) of this same text are superior, particularly the second edition. Although these too have their share of integral calculus and complex algebra, the quantity is more appropriate for a discipline that is mostly science and engineering but with aspects of art to it as well.

Bear in mind that aside from a few specialized areas -- like ultrasonics and its use in non-destructive testing, or the use of digital processing in sound generation and analysis -- little new has come about in the field of acoustics since World War II. Thus unlike with most fields of science, there is no necessity to have the most modern texts to gather a wholly modern understanding of the field.

Indeed, I recently examined almost every text relating to acoustics contained in the circumferential stacks of the Barker Engineering Library under the Great Dome of M.I.T. (and sadly, there aren't as many texts as one might hope). I was surprised both at the age of most volumes in the collection -- and the fact that most had not been checked out of the library in years.

Indeed, from the "Date Due" slips in the back, you could see the field was very popular in the 1960's and 1970's, but popularity seemed to wain in the early 1980's -- approximately contemporaneously, curiously, with the introduction of the digital CD format of audio recording.

By the mid-1990's, at M.I.T., at least, interest in acoustics among faculty and students seem to have declined precipitiously, if the popularity of library texts and the quantity of student theses published in the field is any indication.

Of all the general texts on acoustics that I examined -- to me, one clearly stood out above the others. It was published in 1957 by the lead acoustical scientist at the RCA Research Laboratories in Princeton, New Jersey, Harry F. Olsen, Ph.D. It is entitled, "Acoustical Engineering", although it contains all the fundamental science as well. This text was reprinted in 1991 and is currently available.

Olsen's work is surely a magnum opus, comprising 736 pages and 567 illustrations. It has its fair share of math, but the concepts are often additionally explained through well-crafted line drawings, showing, for example, wave forms drawn in progressive fashion in serial graphs, some of which are designed so that one can even mentally rotate the graphics to gather a three-dimensional perspective. Furthermore, the graphs are often supplemented by equivalent mechanical and electrical analogs, to further assist in understanding.

Best of all, Olsen explains virtually everything acoustical you would ever want to know, from theories of acoustical wave propagation, to an enormous variety of loudspeaker designs, to the mathematical reasoning behind Johann Sebastian Bach's tempered tuning of musical instruments, an artistic practice that is almost universal today.

Thus if it is a text for a problem-oriented course in acoustics that one seeks -- the fourth edition of the "Fundamentals of Acoustics" is a fine text. However, if one wishes to have a ready reference that is extraordinarily comprehensive, or a pedagogical work that doesn't focus on mathematical derivations, better choices can surely be made.

Summary: What Does the Church Teach?
So you want to know what the Church teaches? Then this is the book for you! It explains the teaching of the Second Vatican Council held by the Catholic Church. It is a book for life really. A book to have for studying your faith - whether you are 15 or 80+. So buy one a keep it beside your Holy Bible, and Catholic Catechism. It is so deep. We are talking about Theology of 2000+ years - the experience and living Tradition of the Church.
Though you may have to read a paragraph more than once due to its richness and depth, you will find many a pearl inside. Take for example the saying, "Man is the only creature on earth that was created for His own sake"
The role of the clergy and laity is explained succintly. If you want to understand what Vatican II was about this is for you.
If you are serious about your Catholic Faith this is a must buy! It has definitely helped me in my faith. You will discover what the Holy Spirit said to the Church in Vatican II.

Summary: TRANSLATION ERROR
The actual documents of Vatican Council II are required reading for anyone who wants to know what the Catholic Church really teaches. This translation is suspect however. In paragraph 25 of the Dogmatic Constitution Of The Church, Lumen Gentium, the translation here is: "when he (the pope) proclaims by an absolute decision a doctrine .....". The Latin text has "definitivo actu" which is clearly translated (by anyone who knows even pig latin) "by a definitive act." This loose translation is highly significant for the document goes on to say that doctrines so defined, by a definitive act (definitivo actu), are "rightly said to be irreformable." This egregious error makes the whole translation highly suspect.
This error has been used by liberals who contend that the ordination of women to the prieshood is still open. IT IS NOT!
I recommend the Sixteen Documents of Vatican II by Pauline Books & Media, also available from Amazon.
Summary: Provides a General Explanation and Apologetic for Vatican II
Any student of modern Catholicism should have this book. What Vatican II did in its influence of present day Catholic perspectives and outlook is well-known. What is often forgotten is the documents outlining the future understanding of what the Roman Catholic Church is.

Catholics high school level and up should be introduced to this, particular those students concerned with understanding the official apologetic on tough issues. Protestants of all denominations will see how their own history has been intertwined with Roman Catholicism, and, from this volume, appreciate the similarities and differences. In fact, I bought my copy in a conservative Protestant bookstore, as the nearby Catholic store only sold gift books.

In this first volume, "The Conciliar and Post Conciliar Documents," you'll quickly see is not a teaching book like the new Catechism is intended. Instead, it is a collection of key papers, decrees and statements explaining Rome's view on issues as varied as the

* liturgy
* worship music
* requirements to receive communion
* ecumenism
* bishops
* training of priests
* nonChristian religions and the Catholic Church's relationship to them
* defining and explaining divine revelation
* lay people
* religious liberty
* missionaries

In many ways, this is far more substantive than the Catechism, in that it provides a more thorough Scriptural base in its reasoning. It is more of an anthology of legal decrees, and yet it accessible. It isn't in legalese, but it may refer to Articles and other documents unknown to some readers.

The introduction realizes the reader may not be a Vatican scholar, and a quick, but useful overview of biblical and extrabiblical abbreviations. Each section thereafter has an introduction to provide context behind the need for developing the given decree.

The appendix is strong, and will lead serious researchers to the precise document in question.

The book appears to be set in a 10 pt. Times, with just a quarter to half inch margin, and the volume itself is delivered with an awkward dimension. The book is thicker than it should be, and the solution would've been bigger pages, and thus, a thinner book instead of the current 1062 pages. There is a study edition which is said to accommodate these concerns.

I fully recommend "Vatican Council II: The Conciliar and Post Conciliar Documents (Vatican Collection, Volume 1)." It is just part of the beginning to understand the vastness of modern Catholic theology, but it is a highly readable book, and is officially recognized by Rome for its reliability.

Reviews:
Summary: Not contradictory
The book has a few unfortunate editorial errors in it, but overall it is an impressive explanation of a truly unique golf swing. The claim by another reviewer saying this material has been covered before in "Search for the Perfect Swing" by Cochran and Stobbs is not accurate. That book discusses very briefly a hinged wrist motion that is not the same as Shauger explains. The counter rotating wrist action described in "How to Kill the Ball" puts the club face on a completely different swing plane than the double pendulum motion discussed by Cochran and Stobbs. Further Shauger discusses in a fair amount of detail the twirling of the wrist in a "spinning of the meatballs" action that is not in "Search for the Perfect Swing". If you read Philip Reed's, "In Search of the Greatest Swing" it is clear that Mike Austin developed the hinged wrist and club twirling method. This method is different than the method Mike Austin taught in the past in collaboration with Mike Dunaway. Dan Shauger is teaching the later developed system.

My person experience with learning this method is a positive one. It is not prone to lost balls and hitting fat, those occur when the swing circle moves before hitting the ball or an improper pivot motion. When executed correctly the ball goes dead straight with a long and high carry. When you feel the club head release through the ball you know it is go and go.
Summary: contradictory, incomplete, lacking detail, and very poorly written
The information presented is presented poorly. Dan is no writer, and that fact is PAINFULLY obvious. Worse, the information presented contradicts in parts what Mike Austin and Mike Dunaway (Austin's pupil) have publicly stated about the swing in other reference materials. One example is that Mr. Dunaway states that the delayed action of the swing is the squaring of the clubface, whereas Mr. Shauger claims that the club stays square throughout the swing. My experience is that keeping the club square throughout the swing reduces power. This finding can be substantiated by physics. Nonetheless, I have worked with these ideas for several months, and the concepts are interesting once they are interpreted and understood. These concepts are not new, and this type of swing is covered in some detail in other materials (such as "Search for the Perfect Swing: The Proven Scientific Approach to Fundamentally Improving Your Game by Alastair Cochran"). I have found that slight mistakes with this swing are greatly amplified. I have also found that with the grip espoused by Mr. Shauger (left thumb extended straight down the top of the shaft) I cannot feel the position of the club head very effectively at all. I have also found that distance control is difficult to achieve with this swing, and fat shots are very easy to come by. This stands to reason since the basis for the swing is a lofting of the clubface through impact. That's right! Through impact, add loft to the club. Good advice? No. Several months of study have convinced me that this is a good swing if I want to spend time searching in the woods for lost balls. Does it add power? For the average golfer, yes. Are there other ways of achieving the same kind of power? Yes. There are an infinite number of variations of the golf swing. Many of these enable me to swing a club at 130 mph. This is one variation, and I do not believe it to be an optimal one.
Summary: The hinged release with left arm counter rotation works well
This book is an instructional guide to the swing technique of legendary long driver Mike Austin, and his champion proteges Mike Dunaway and Jaacob Bowden. The swing, while unorthodox in several ways, appears very "normal" at speed, so no worries about looking goofy.

I've been working on it for a couple weeks now. I'm very happy with the Austin release action and counter rotation of the left forearm. It is much more comfortable than the conventional "baseball" rollover release. More importantly, I have much less unplanned curvature in my shots now. (Note: The neutral grip position happens to match what I was using before. It may feel more unusual to those coming from stronger grips.)

I'm docking the book a star for general lack of editing polish. It has a home-published feel, many misspelled words, and the diagrams could be greatly improved by an artist. The information itself, however, is excellent. It's well thought out with plenty of detail, and fairly well organized.
