Summary: Bently's BMW service Manual Review
I found the information contained in the book to be of great help and most useful; however, having said that, the quality of the book (how it is put together) is in need of great improvement.

I've had the book less than one month and within the first two weeks, the binding started to come apart so pages started to come out; I will be contacting amazon.com to request an exchange and hopefully, they'll stand behind their product.

Summary: Using the Service Manual
A great tool to use. Illustrations are adequate and information is ample. Almost too much information in one book.

Summary: Not as complete as the CD Edition
This manual covers most repairs but I was a little disappointed with it. I got the CD Factory repair manual which is much more detailed in diagnosis and repair procedures. Also, one big drawback of this book is it does not have Component Location section - the CD does.

Summary: Shop Manual VW Golf GT TDI
This book is very thorough, but well laid out. It is fairly easy to find what you are looking for, and the descriptions and photos are clear. An excellent reference.

For my job and personally, I like knowing what the function of the parts are and where they are located. I am so glad to have the book. It was well written and made learning easy. Summary: Too much old crap and unnecessary info! The diagrams in the book where nice, but man this guy isn't an author. You can tell he knows what he is talking about but he just uses a lot of lingo. Thankfully, there is a glossary, but it takes too long to look up every word. He just tells you the different parts in mechanisms. He doesn't really explain how anything works. By the way, he has like 5 nicknames for every part. If you are a beginner too complex, if your an expert you probably know this stuff. If you have the money and your an amateur go ahead. If none of the above I wouldn't suggest this book. Summary: No good The author is an owner and operator of a tutoring center. He is not an expert in auto mechanics. As he points out on the back cover the pictures and the concepts were for teenage boys and the accompanying graphics are of poor quality. If you actually want to learn anything substative of autos this is a poor poor choice. You are better of visiting the automotive section of www.howstuffworks.com or some similar website to learn more with better graphics and for free. I bought this book long time ago and finally had the time to look at it and I regret it. Summary:

Summary: Just changed my own clutch and brakes using this manual
Never worked on a front wheel drive car before (all old school here) and consider this manual the best investment I could have made before beginning a clutch replacement and new rotors and pads.

Well written, well illustrated and worth every penny.

Summary: Mini Cooper Manual
This is no mini manual, it is actually quite large, full of great info. Wheather you are like me and just wanting to do simple maintence or a mechanic that really wants to get into it, this is the book for you. It pays for itself just with the first oil change, or the first time you need to turn off the service light. Mini mechanics in Boston are 95 bucks an hour, so anything that I can do will save me money. This book is very detailed and has plenty of photos clearly labled. It is layed out pretty well and easy to find items. Also it does a great job seperating the Cooper S from the Regular model (by photos an text) I highly recommend it, I have not read through any others but after this book I dont think I will need any others.

Summary: Excellent Overall Manual
Look, let's face it. BMWs are getting increasingly complicated. If you really want to break down your engine completely, maybe you shouldn't be working with such an advanced piece of hardware. (The analogy is like a woodworking hobbyist attempting to build an office building.) So it makes sense that the manual doesn't cover the process of rebuilding an M62 engine to the Nth degree. I've had 9 BMWs and 9 Bentley manuals. My only replacement engine came from a crate. What this manual does cover is the practical aspects of maintianing and servicing your own car, including troubleshooting dozens of issues and maintaining many body, electrical, mechanical, engine and transmission parts and functions. For that purpose it is a great manual.

The second volume all about the electrical system and is almost entirely schematics. Every single wire in every year of every version of the E39 is identified. This may seem like overkill, but I can tell you when you are trying to isolate an electrical problem and need to trace one of the hundreds of wires in the harness it absolutely is not. It's a blessing.

Even if you don't work on your car, do you trust your BMW dealer or mechanic? I thought so. My local BMW dealer is full of "BMW recommends that you replace..."garbage. Buy this manual and you can be sure you'll keep him honest. The next time he makes a recommendation that doesn't seem right. Check it out in your book. Chances are the you'll recover more than the cost of the book in your first visit to your mechanic....if you ever go back.

Summary: Very disappointed
The books claim to address the M52 and M62 engines. Not a word about the subassemblies of either engine(the biggest part of an engine) The same information seems to be repeated in several places in the book. Gives the impression they are trying to make up volume. I believe the hype aboute the book is misleading since the publisher claims they strived for completeness. You cannot claim to cover an engine and then leave the largest part of it unattended. Price tag quite stiff with an ommision like that. E-mailed Bentley several times no response. In comparing this to the Bentley book on the E30 - It is a shame at the price.

I had read the other reviews here stating that bentley book was poor, so I was not expecting much. I was really shocked how poorly it described the operations that I was looking to perform on my car. I am trying to clean/remove the idle air control valve on my car, and that may/maynot require removal of the upper intake manifold. My chilton manual spends pages and 20+ pictures on the operation, haynes is half a page, bentley barely a paragraph. Yes, the book is useful for a third opinion sometimes. Its not worth 50 dollars though. Summary: Bentley BMW Z3 Service Manual Very thorough and instuctions are at a level that most car owners can follow. Summary: Waiting for Amazon.
