Summary: the best manual available
There seem to be a lot of reviews which gripe about various problems with this manual, however, they all fail to suggest anything better. That's because there isn't a better printed manual. BMW has not offered printed shop manuals to customers since the era of the 2002 (the car, not the year) and while some bootleg electronic documentation (TIS/ETK) is available there are times when a printed manual is the best choice. The Bentley manual is head and shoulders above the others available.

If you work on BMWs you want the Bentley manuals. There's plenty of stuff they don't cover, but for the most the TIS doesn't cover that stuff either, like how to rebuild differentials. For electrical troubleshooting you can use the ETK.

Summary: great little "bible"
Great little bible for classic Bimmer owners to have. Very informative on how to take things apart, put back together and trouble shooting.
Also some very helpful hints on routine maintenance. Found some things out that we never would of without this book.
Much better then the "generic" books they sell in the auto part stores.

Summary: Take care of your Volkswagen hybrid!!??
First of all, I have used both, but this manual is significantly more in depth than the Chilton's guide for these models, especially in the electrical and body schematics. It's definitely worth the extra bucks for the breadth of expert advice and will most likely keep good resale value long after the car is gone.

1999 to 2005 were great years for the VW hybrid engine. I'm not talking about gas/electric, but gas/oil: the amazing (and unexplained) ability of the VW engine to burn through copious amounts of oil (but still getting decent gas mileage).

Unfortunately, if you are buying this book, there is a good chance that you know exactly what I am talking about! Take matters into your own hands!

Summary: Service Manual for Volkswagens
I can honestly say that this is the manual I recommended to all of my Volkswagen owning friends. All of them. Surprisingly all of them bought it. Not only does this manual help me fix problems that are serious to moderate to just plain weird it helps me learn alot about my car as well. It helped me learn the things I need to get my car "Bella" the Volkswagen in a better shape. I recently had to change my water pump and I was going to take it to the mechanic which cost me alot of money, and instead of taking it to the mechanic I used the simple knowlege and the manual and I changed my water pump. Yes it has that too.
By learning and reading the manual everytime I need to use it I am able to fix other cars as well that are Volkswagens. This knowledge that I gain from this great manual will stick with me forever. I am very satisfied with it. I am very thankful that I bought it and alot of my other friends that own the manual are thankful as well. It trully is worth every penny that you spend when you buy this awesome manual.

Awesome manual. Haynes is cheaper, but this one is so much more detailed. Suck it up and spend the money, it's worth it.

Summary: Good, but lacks detail
Needed to replace water pump, thermostat, belts and hoses on E39 530, details are lacking. Good source for general information, but most of that is available on the Net.

It's a pity that the technical manual doesn't cover the BMW 525TDS or TD (Diesel versions). These Diesel-engine equipped E39-versions differ of course in the engine mechanics (i.e. a M51TU motor engine), but has also differences in the electrical wiring, hence making the details of the Electrical Diagrams almost useless (when it comes to the details of the connections).
Otherwise, the technical manual is of pretty good quality and is hence of practical use.

Summary: BMW 540i Service Manual
This manual is indispensible for the home mechanic to do even the more basic checks and maintenance. A pretty complete coverage of all components allows for some of the more involved checks and R&R operations.

Summary: for the serious Porsche 911 3,2 Carrera Owner
This book is, in my opinion, invaluable for the owner of the Porsche 911 3,2 Carrera.
It covers all aspects of repair step by step and is clearly written with good supporting photographs. Each chapter has a paragraph about faultfinding. In many aspects it goes beyond my abilities as an amateur, but it helps me to tackle the occasional service and repair and to know what my mechanic is doing. Surely the next best book to an original Porsche Workshop Manual.

Summary: Good but could be better
I've been waiting for this manual for a long time. Bentley's excellent VW manuals have been very high on the quality list for quite some time so I was excited to get this manual. Overall it is a great and is a must for the DIY mechanic who needs to know more about their car and can't afford the factory workshop manuals and I think that for the majority of individuals who won't be dropping engines and trannies this will sufice. My gripes are small. No detail on a lot of misc body stuff. The transmission section mentions both the 915 and later G50 transmissions but only shows how to dismantle and repair the 915. Heater and ventilation information is sparse (as always) at best.

I was surprised at how they did keep up with much of the Porsche tech bulletins that have come out during these model years as well as just the overall presentation. Very nice.

Summary: Not enough detail
This sure beats the orange covered "other" service manual and the $900 factory service manual in price. There are a lot of missing details like where to charge the A/C, rebuilding your Targa top (intricate locking mechanism details missing). Yes it shows breakdown of parts diagrams but some diagrams lack supporting text. This book is BIG and it is well worth the...you spend. A nice thing I read in the beginning was a disclaimer stating that it may have errors or lack of info but the publisher is more than open to accept any ammendments from it's readers and that they were meticulous about providing the MOST ACCURATE data they could find. This is why you SHOULD HAVE this book because WE the people can make it better! It IS a "must-have" book if you are serious about maintaining your own 84-89 911 Carrera.

I bought this book and paid extra for overnight shipping. It paid for itself within 3 or 4 days when we were able to repair our 95 Golf ourselves using this book and a little bit of diagnosis. The book is easy enough for just about anyone to use and detailed enough to make any repairs.

Bently's service manuals are one of the best sources of information you can get for your BMW or Porsche. Highly recommend any of their books.

Summary: BMW Manual hits homerun.
