Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: The RENThead Bible This book is the perfect book for fans of the show and the perfect coffee table book... I simply love reading it and looking at the pictures. The book features information on how the show came about, it's sucess, and the life of Jonathon Larson(it's creator) struggle to have his show made on Broadway. Larson tragically died before opening night due to an undiagnosed heart condition. Truly it's a shame he did not live to see the dream of his creation realized. In the book the orginal cast members talk a little bit about Larson and the musical's affect on them. The most interesting part of the story is reading about the orginal cast's sucess... all of the orginal cast sucess has become EXTREMELY sucessful. The musical being their break to stardom. The actors & actresses talk about the affect the musical has on their everyday lives. The musical features little known facts about the show, the cast, and insight onto what made the musical one of the longest running musicals in history. The book is truly the RentHead bible and perfect for the fan of musicals... Summary: AMAZING BOOK This book is incredible! If you're someone who's really new to the show and REALLY want to impress your friends and family, This is a GREAT book for just that thing! The Pictures are AMAZING, all of the information is 110% accurate and REALLY interesting! And, to top it all off, it has the FULL LIBRETTO!!! <-- Ahh, what more could you want?!? I highly recommend this book! It keeps me entertained for HOURS and HOURS on end! :) I could give this book way beyond 5 stars, but alas, thats the boundaries I have been given Summary: A Must Have for RENTheads Knowing the background story of Jonathan Larson made me appreciate the beauty of RENT so much more. We all know the man is a genius to come up with such an amazing musical, but I don't think we knew just how devoted he was. Through the words of mainly friends, family, and a few people who he worked with on RENT, we get a somewhat complete portrait of the man who gave up everything for his baby - his musical. Jonathan Larson was an amazing man who died a tragic death before he could see his dream fully realized, but I like to think he knows what a success he created. This book shows that it's never easy to make your dreams come true, but you need to keep trying. One thing I will say is that if you've watched "No Day but Today," the documentary on Disc 2 of RENT (the movie), the material will seem quite repetitive. Also, if you're not a major RENThead or into biographies, I wouldn't waste your time or money. It's an interesting story I gobbled up in about an hour, but it can be a little slow. A plus is that it does have all the song lyrics in there with picture. I loved it, and it was definitely worth the money I've spent. I've seen RENT 3 times on stage and about 7 times in theaters/on DVD. I know the story inside out, and now, thanks to this book, I also know Jonathan's story. It really made me appreciate RENT that much more. Summary: |
| The Ultimate Broadway Fake Book
Publisher: Hal Leonard Corporation |

| ISBN: 0793582598 List Price: $45.00 Amazon Price: $29.70 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great resource ! Although like a lot of Hal Leonard books the chords can be a bit "commercial" and the layout lacks that professional fake book lead sheet style that makes it more comfortable to use on a bandstand, I have to say that this is an incredibly useful resource of showtunes - - bordering on voluminous. About 95% of the tunes the gigging Jazz musician plays comes from showtunes, but few Jazz musicians are willing to openly come out and say, "I play showtunes," that said, to Jazz performers looking for those undertapped standards missed in the REAL BOOKS, this book is a gem... To vocalists, cabaret performers and working piano lounge players consider this a lifetime repoitoire that can fit in a computer carrying bag (minus the computer.) As for the chords... most of them work quite well with solo piano (especially some of the diminished passing chords and stuff like that) but for ensemble playing a combination of ear and pen and pencil will be necessary. Tunes are written in reasonable keys, have lyrics and range from classic Cole Porter/Richard Rogers/George Gershwin Broadway to some of the newer stuff (circa A Chorus Line, Jesus Christ Superst, etc.) And as an added bonus, this well indexed fake book even includes a section where the musicals that the tunes came from get brief bios... not only education, but great if you'd like to have a cute, informed Michael Feinsteinish way of showing that you know ABOUT the tunes. Spiral binding makes the book easy to use on a piano... but weight will be an issue with music stands, and in times these spiral books fall apart so my suggestion is to buy the book and put copies of frequently played tunes in clear sheet binders. So far, thrilled with this purchase ! Summary: About as good as you can reasonably hope for I've always been a broadway buff, and I bought this book just for casually toying with my autoharp at home; I'm not a professional musician. For my purpose, this book is wonderful: I can easily play the songs from the listed chords, and there's a huge variety. I think it has done a great job of picking out the most classic songs from the early through mid 20th century, although by necessity as it gets closer to the present it gets a little more sparse, fleshing out the more popular shows a the expense of some of the excellent but less known ones. While some reviewers have correctly complained that the book doesn't include everything... if it did, it would look like an encyclopedia, and cost as much. It has a well selected set of music given that they have to cram it into a book you can carry in your backpack. Also, keep in mind that they can't necessarily get the rights to publish everything at a price that would make the book affordable. I accepted before I bought it that I'll need to supplement it with a few more song books, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper to buy this than to buy a songbook from every musical I'd want one for. The indices are very useful: notice the plural, indices. It's indexed by song title, by show title, and by composer. I'm rating this book 4 stars instead of 5 primarily because of the binding: I hate plastic comb bindings. I know it's a big book and they want to bind it cheaply so it's affordable, but even a wire spiral would be better... marginally, anyway. I'm convinced the pages will eventually tear along the binding, so I know that I'll eventually have to figure out a way to re-bind it. My other complaint, and it's fairly minor, is that some of the songs are a bit sparse on chords: I ocasionally find myself wanting to pencil in a few extra chords... but hey, it's my book now, I can do that. If you're really helpless with music you'll have a problem with that, but then, if you're that helpless with music you probably wouldn't want a fake book, now would you? Summary: Not necessarily what you expect This book has some interesting good and bad points. First, the good: It's a fake book in the Hal Leonard style, in original keys, of a wide selection of the best known Broadway songs. Lots of good stuff. And unlike The Ultimate Fake Book (which is great for other reasons), the songs are conveniently organized by Show rather than by Title. A nice addition is a synopsis of each show and its relevance at the beginning of the book. But the bad... first, like other very large Hal Leonard books, the binding is a plastic tab that is hard to turn relative to spiral bindings and tends to come apart over time. Second, many (but not all) songs have what appear to be guitar chord charts, which are distracting to everyone else. And third, it doesn't have all the songs you expect. For example, it doesn't have songs from the movie versions (which you may not realize weren't part of the broadway version) or songs from updated broadway versions. The play "Grease" is represented, for example, but lacks the theme song (Grease), Hopelessly Devoted to You, Greased Lightning and other big hits from the show. Similarly, Starlight Express in its original incarnation was not that big a hit. "The New Starlight Express" was. Amazingly, there are only a few songs from the latter in the book; it's missing "He'll Whistle At Me" and "Next Time You Fall In Love", along with about six others. This means, of course, that after seeing the (current) broadway production, you won't be able to pick up this book and play the tunes; they're not there. However, there are a LOT of great tunes that are there, the organization is great, and as always Hal Leonard did a great job of arranging them. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Wickedly fun! If you've seen the play, you will love this book. The arrangements are great as well as fun to play. Summary: Wicked Piano/Vocal Selections I bought this book because a friend gave me the Wicked CD and I fell in love with the show. This book is a selection of the most popular songs from the show, in a format where a singer could perform them with only piano accompaniment. Most of the songs are pretty close to the versions that you hear on the CD, but some have been altered to make them easier to perform as solos or audition pieces. Most of the speaking and chorus parts (like in "Popular" and "One Short Day") have been removed and some of the songs have new endings. In "Dancing Through Life", the second half of the song has been cut so the entire song can be sung by only one person. Also, the part in "The Wizard and I" where Elphaba has a vision also appears in "Defying Gravity". Lastly, "For Good" is written so it can be sung as a duet or a solo. This book is good for anyone looking to sing these songs as a solo, duet or for an audition. The piano part is a simplified version of the orchestral score with the melody line usually occurring in the right hand and it is easy enough for almost any accompanist to play. However, if you are looking for an exact translation of the songs from the show, you will be disappointed. Otherwise, this is a good buy for any Wicked fan who wants to perform their favorite songs from this fantastic show! Summary: WICKED JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. RECEIVED THE VERY NEXT DAY. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: AIDA is Amazing! An absolutly incredible book. Songs range from standard vocal and accompmniment, to a full five lines for harmonies if you desire. FANTASTIC! A ++ Range for females: Low E to High F Summary: Aida songbook This book is very thorough, includes most all of the songs from the show. Chords are provided for less advanced musicians, but the piano score is quite difficult - not for beginners! Intermediates will be able to play about half the songs easily. True to the soundtrack, and all the parts are provided as well as the lyrics and details about which character is singing. Love this book! Summary: Very good!!! This book is excellent - it contains piano music for most of the songs in the musical, and the transcriptions are largely faithful to the very pianistic Broadway score. All of the songs are complete, containing the piano versions of the instrumental solos found in the actual score. It also has guitar chords and lyrics for singers, with a separate line for the singers' notes, complete with harmonies. Unlike many Broadway music books, this one is very thorough and does not disappoint!!! Although that playing some songs in their entirety may be a difficult task for beginning pianists, the result of playing the music from this great musical is well worth the effort, and I'm sure that pianists and singers of all levels will enjoy this book. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great primer on Sondheim This is a great book on how Sondheim "found his sound." I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Sondheim's card system and it gave me greater insight into a person who knew Leonard Bernstein. Summary: Fascinating Look at the Creative Process Sir Isaac Newton once said: 'If I have accomplished anything, it is because I stood on the shoulders of giants.' Stephen Sondheim would probably say something similar. He has acknowledged being influenced by classical music, Broadway, Tin Pan Alley, Hollywood and many more. In the end though, Sondheim's work has taken these together and produced something uniquely his own. The results speak for themselves: West Side Story, Gypsy, Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Do I Hear a Waltz and the list goes on and on. In 2004 alone there was the first Broadway production of Assassins, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (London), The Frogs (Lincoln Center), Passion, Pacific Overtures. This book though, is not a description of what he has done, it's an in depth analysis of the way his music came about. The author teaches music at Dartmouth. His analysis, aided by Sondheim himself talks not only about the origins of music, but the way Sondheim goes about developing a song. It's a fascinating look at the creative process. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: How did Suskind get authorship credit on this book? If you are looking for a fresh look at some of Broadway's bomb, do not stop here. Suskind wrote very little in this book of previously-published material by other people. This book is more accuratly "compiled by" than "by" him. I refrain from entirely discounting this book because it publishes (more or less) in their entirety sources that were used by much better authors by their much better books. It may be a reference for theatre students, but there isn't much else to recommend this book. And don't get me wrong; flops are a source of morbid fascination for me. This is why I am so disappointed with this particlar volume -- there's nothing in it that you can't get in other, better written, better compiled, and better organized tomes. Summary: Closing Notices... On 45th Street in Manhattan there is a restaurant that is favored by theatre folk and playgoers alike, Joe Alllen's is it's name and on their walls are theatrical posters, not unusual for the locale, being in the heart of the theatre district, what's notable about the collection of posters is that all those displayed were huge flops. Steven Suskin's, "Second Act Trouble" takes this concept (theatrical failures) and illuminates how once promising shows turn into failures. The collection covers twenty or so Broadway shows(some never made it to The Great White Way) that flopped, losing all or most of their investment. The articles, published previously from bios and newspaper accounts from various writers, are grouped into chapters such as; When Everything Goes Wrong, Star Turns and Battle Stations. Suskin has assembled the most illuminating accounts of; what seemed like a good idea at the time, Liza Minneli directed by Martin Scorcesse-can't fail, right? It is a very enjoyable read although as you follow show after show dive off a cliff it gets a little depressing, how they failed; the who, what and where of" bombs" could be instructive for investors and producers alike, but, alas there is no sure fire formula for a hit show (could you imagine a show about a murderer who dices up his victims and makes pies out of them plus he's singing-Sweeny Todd). I am a theatre goer but even if you are not it's a fascinating peek into Broadway and what makes it tick...and sometimes it's ticking is the prelude to a very large bomb. Fun read. Summary: Theatre failures and their influences Theatre buffs will quickly come to find SECOND ACT TROUBLE: BEHIND THE SCENES AT BROADWAY'S BIG MUSICAL BOMBS an essential guide to which shows have failed - and why. Veteran theatrical manager and producer Suskin analyzes over twenty Broadway musical flops from the 1930s to the 1990s, using accounts by those directly involved and articles from respected critics of the times to consider financial failures across the board, from famous productions by well-known artists to lesser-known Broadway shows. Adding his own notes, Suskin provides well-rounded analysis of failures and their influences. Summary: |
| The Light in the Piazza
Publisher: Hal Leonard |

| ISBN: 142340386X List Price: $17.95 Amazon Price: $11.67 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A Truly Excellent new Broadway Score The American musical in the past few years has often been of the "jukebox" type(Mama Mia, Good Vibrations)or featured music that hearkens back to a particular period (Hairspray) or verges on contemporary pop. There is a lot of tongue-in cheek out there (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Urinetown), and much of it is excellently crafted. What has often been lacking are musicals where genuine emotion is allowed to be expressed, with all the risks that that entails, by a composer with a definitive sound of his/her own. The Light in the Piazza is an admirable attempt to craft a musical where the scenes and songs aren't drawn from a pool of pre-packaged emotions. And Adam Guettel's 'sound' blows like a fresh breeze. His simple yet subtle lyrics allow the characters to display themselves as individuals, not stereotypes. His harmonic and formal choices, characterized respectively by comparatively frequent modulations and subtle departures from strict AABA convention, allow melodies to soar and sweep in a manner that never sounds old-fashioned, only human. This CD is worth buying for listeners interested in hearing the sound of a composer/lyricist whose range encompases both gravity and levity; who is willing to let characters express themselves and reveal their weaknesses and vulnerabilities without being subjected to the composer's superior oversight. Summary: Why, Hal Leonard? The simplified arrangements in this book gut the harmonic resonance of almost all the songs. Numbers like "Dividing Day" and "The Beauty Is" are very nearly unrecognizable. Thank you for the performance edition of "Light in the Piazza," now please, release the Vocal Score, Mr. Guettel. Summary: Brilliant This is truly one of the most Brilliant scores to come out of Broadway in the past 10 years. The Vocal selection book includes all the necessary numbers, and we will most likely be hearing them at audition after audition. In response to previous reviews: The book includes two versions of the song: "The Light in the Piazza." It includes a Vocal Selection version in the key of C, with the vocal line in the piano reduction, and a "Performance edition" in the back in the key of D with the original piano accompaniment from the score. The editors clearly knew that there would be a high demand for the title song in recitals and elsewhere, so they included two versions. Vocal selections traditionally include a piano reduction of the score that includes the vocal melody, and chord symbols above the staff. What's curious about this book is that while it includes a traditional reduction, no chord symbols are included. Singers who are looking for the original piano accompaniment of songs should seek out what's called a Vocal or Piano/Conductor Score. The difference, however, is minimal. In the hands of a capable pianist, either Scores or Selections will work just fine. In addition, Vocal Selections are usually more helpful than Vocal Scores when seeking music for auditions as the simplified piano parts are easier for pianists to sight-read. Summary: |
