Summary: interesting but rambling read
the author ties together a number of disparate stories but the key takeaway from a practical perspective was: manage risk and do your homework.
Summary: The Ongoing Epic of the Kelly Criterion for Risk Management.
"Fortune's Formula" tells the story of the Kelly Criterion -through the experiments, ideas, wins, and losses of those who have espoused it and who have derided it, at race tracks, black jack tables, sports books, and, finally, on Wall Street. The Kelly Criterion is a risk management formula published in 1956 by Bell Labs information theorist John Kelly, Jr. that dictates how much of your bankroll you should bet based on your edge divided by the odds so that you will have zero risk of ruin no matter how bad your luck is, while increasing wealth faster than any other betting system. It does not address what bets you should make, which is another matter entirely. Instead of writing a simple analysis of the Kelly Criterion, author William Poundstone brings this story alive by relating the histories of key figures who have used, promoted, or criticized the Kelly Criterion: information theorists, economists, traders, gamblers, and gangsters. Some readers may find this approach unfocused and unnecessary. But I think the personalities lend "Fortune's Formula" an epic quality and place the Kelly Criterion firmly in the context of real life, with real consequences, as opposed to the realm of abstruse theories that never leave the halls of academe.

The men whom "Fortune's Formula" casts as protagonists are Claude Shannon, the MIT scholar who invented information science and who amassed a small fortune as a buy-and-hold investor, typically making 28% per year on a small portfolio, and Ed Thorpe, author of 1962's gambling classic "Beat the Dealer", 1967's "Beat the Market", co-founder of Princeton-Newport Partners fund (1969-1988) and founder of Ridgeline Partners (1994-2002) quant fund. Ed Thorpe's transformation from MIT egghead to black jack sharp to Wall Street wizard in an ongoing theme, as Thorpe is an immensely successful advocate of the Kelly Criterion -and he is still alive. There is unfortunately little information on John Kelly, because he died in 1965 at the age of 41. The key Kelly challenger is 1970 Nobel Laureate economist Paul Samuelson, who probably overstates his case in calling the Kelly Criterion a "complete swindle" when the point of disagreement seems to be the concept of "utility" in long-tern outcome. Whatever one thinks of Samuelson's outspoken arrogance, he is certainly entertaining. Mobster Manny Kimmel makes an appearance, as do traders Ivan Boesky, Michael Milken, and John Meriwether, as well as numerous information theorists.

William Poundstone obviously has a point of view. He is an advocate of the Kelly Criterion, believing that it produces better results than any other betting system over the long haul while withstanding even the most unlikely confluences of catastrophe that have a way of manifesting themselves periodically. He doesn't support efficient market hypothesis. He thinks people can, and have, made money consistently on the stock market. -But that you need a darned good method of managing risk to do it, a better method than Value at Risk reports. "Fortune's Formula"'s fascination is not only in its history of the Kelly Criterion, but in the realization that a risk management formula has so many seemingly disparate applications. As Poundstone says, "The idea pops up in the strangest places."
Summary: Takes a while for everything to come together, but well worth continuing with
This book gives a very good overview of the Kelly betting system for deciding what proportion of your 'pot' should be staked on a bet with given odds/return. Whilst the first part of the book seems illogical, jumping from one story to another, it maintains it's pace until all parts are brought together. An attempt is made at presenting both sides of the arguement for and against the Kelly system, although the book is very clearly biased in favour.

Good overview of casino operations. It covers Indian gaming as well as Nevada and mentions where there are difference. I am the controller and I wish it had more accounting /finance.
Summary: Excelent operations overview
This book is a must read for everyone entering the casino business. It's a clear reference, and it shows derails some myths about gaming operations.
Summary: Great read
This books assumes you know nothing about Gaming Operations and goes from there, taking you on an in-depth exploration of the gaming industry, from it's beginnings through modern-day operations. This book was highly beneficial. I also read "The Gaming Industry: Introduction and Perspectives" from the UNLV International Gaming Institute, both of which I would strongly recommend. Well written and dives to the appropriate level of detail.

Summary: Las Vegas history: from mob to corporate
The complete saga of Las Vegas from its early roots with the mob to modern corporate times is presented in a lively history of the city's real rulers in SHARKS IN THE DESERT: THE FOUNDING FATHERS AND CURRENT KINGS OF LAS VEGAS. Many made their fortunes developing the casino business the city is most famous for today - but many myths have surrounded their activities - myths which columnist Smith dispels in an investigative history which tracked mobsters and their connections to the city's rich and monied.

Summary: Great book and great shipping time
I received this book almost right away. It's a very good summary of the people of Las Vegas written by someone who knows, John Smith.
Summary: An excellent read and a superb history lesson
With "Sharks in the Desert" John L. Smith wrote one of the best books about Las Vegas ever. This book has a lot of substance and it is full of information. Although it's nonfiction, it reads like a novel. Lots of valuable quality research are packed into the 400 pages. Although we have seen the TV specials about Las Vegas history, it was so refreshing to read John's book -- this is a great read from the first page to the last. The reader learns about today's casino moguls and the harsh but real techniques to separate casino patrons from their money. It also tells the story how like a gigantic masterplan Las Vegas rose from the barren desert into today's Sodom and Gomorrah. Smith is excellent in telling it like it is and this book is a great educational tool for anyone who wants learn more about the meadows, i.e. Las Vegas, and the people who developed this desert oasis in the past and who run this town like clockwork presently.

Summary: What better place for naughtyness than in Sin City??
This book was hot hot hot! The most popular A-listers at BHH are going on a trip to Sin City instead of that boring trip to Washington-Parker, Sam, Cammie, Adam, Dee and of course Ana. The six of them check in at Las Vegas' finest Palms Hotel. Cammie decides all the girls should have a catty fashion contest, but when Cammie herself doesnt come appropiately dressed things get a little wild...
Poor Parker is low on cash and is willing to do anything to get some cash fast, but what happens when his gambling reaches a dead end? On the other hand, Anna is running low on love. She seems lost and cant stop thinking about Ben, so she leaves him a voicemail inviting him to Sin City. But what happens when Cyn and Scott show up? Scott is looking amazingly hot and Cyn is unsure about their relationship, will Anna make a move?
And to top off the cake they all go to a hypnotist for fun.But is it all fun and games when they are forced to share their deepest secrets on stage??Cammie confesses something about Adam, Adam confesses something about Cammie, and Anna confesses something about Scott! Sam just lays back with her mouth wide open as she hears these deep revealing secrets. And what happens when they decide to watch the tape? Will all end well? Will there be new hook-ups or break-ups??
And the frosting on top of this cake is that who else but Ben shows up at the Palms just before they're about to leave. Fortunetly, Anna spots him and stops the limo. Unfortunetly, although they express their feelings for each other and cant wait to ravish each other, Ben has a secret- he has a girlfriend waiting for him to come back to her at Princeton. Will this newly revealed secret affect the magic between Ben and Anna?
**READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT!!!!**
Summary: perfect follow-up
After I had read the 4th book in the a-list series, I thought it would be very hard to get any better. This book proved me wrong with its twisting plot, and the "sin city scene" making the characters more honest with each other. Everyone's secrets are revealed, and no one can take them back. Fabulous 5th part to the series, and I'm going to start the 6th very soon.
Summary: A-List 5: Back in Black
I liked this one a whole lot better than the 4th one. Am I the only one who's happy with Ben and Anna getting back together? Because Anna just doesn't seem like a swinger but when she and Ben aren't together she just goes from guy to guy. I think it's pathetic, but that's just me.
So, they go to Vegas and alot of bad things happen. Well, they weren't bad but they really built suspense to the book.
The only thing that annoys me when reading this series is characters jump in and out, only seeming to be in the book when it's convenient for them to be. But I guess it's kinda like real life, where some things that happen just aren't worth mentioning. It's just that this is the first book I've seen that in and I was kinda interested. Anyways, this was worth the read.

Summary: Wide-ranging strategy guide by a poker pro
This a beautifully produced, pricey paperback covering the poker games that Chan plays. Of course, he doesn't just play, he wins big. By my count, he's won ten WSOP events.

The book is something of a scrapbook of poker photos, with strategies on many poker games: basically stud, omaha, both high and high low, as well as limit and no-limit Texas hold'em. He describes his thinking as a hold'em hand progresses -- very useful. By the way, there is little math in book, so you if you looking for the clearest expression of pot odds, implied odds, look elswhere. (For a book that leads you safely through the odds jungle, see Weighing the Odds in Hold'em Poker by King Yao.)

Remember the list price is $30. The qualiy paper and color photos cost more. In fact, even the hands are shown in color photographs.

This is a worthwhile book with insights from a successful player. It scores in readability way above the serious classics by Sklansky, Malmuth and others.

It's not the best first book on poker as it's too advanced for a beginner, but it may well be the best second one.
Summary: Fantastic
Saw this book on amazon.com and figured, what the hell, I'll buy it and see what happens. Got it a week later, read the section on limit hold em first, since that's about the only game I play well, and was surprised my gameplay was very different to what was mentioned. After reading it and trying out the different techniques, I was pleasantly surprised to see my profits increasing. Well worth the price and the time to read. Have since read through the other sections and am finding myself getting some good earnings in Omaha and 5 card stud as well, although 5 card stud is a bit tricky.
I definitely believe this book is good for beginners and advanced players alike. Well written, easy to read, clear illustrations and excellent presentation overall.

Summary: An in-depth discussion of card-counting or related mathematical methodology
A solid "how-to" guide co-written by the highly-regarded poker player Johnny Chan, whose titles include 2002 WSOP Match Play NLH Champion and 2003 WSOP No Limit Hold-em Champion among many others, Play Poker Like Johnny Chan: Book One Casino Poker is a simple guide to poker basics for players who are out to win. Chapters discuss general poker concepts for the uninitiated, and the rules and favorable versus unfavorable situations for many poker variants including Limit Hold-em, Seven Card Stud, Eight Or Better Stud, Omaha High, Omaha Hi-Low, and No-Limit Hold-em. Some background information on tournaments and internet poker is included, as is general (and very sound) strategy advice for the would-be career poker player, as well as a mentions of famous and skilled individuals Chan has played with. Notably absent from Play Poker Like Johnny Chan is any in-depth discussion of card-counting or related mathematical methodology; it is primarily an introductory guide to give the reader a hands-on understanding of game mechanics as well as the importance of the professional mindset. Chan's key rules - keep playing when you are winning, stop when you are losing, stay to an environment where you feel comfortable, take a vacation from poker when you need it (never try to win the money needed for a vacation from poker when you need one, that's a certain way to burnout), and discipline yourself to move back down to smaller tables when you're losing at big tables - are vital and should be taken to heart by all prospective professional poker players. Full-color photographs illustrate this handy primer, which is printed on glossy paper.

Summary: It was okay but bringing down the house is better..
I bought this book cause after I read Bringing down the house by the same author, I loved it and I thought this one would be great too. The two stories looks pretty similar; MIT and Las Vegas are the main places. However I think Bringing Down the House is better than this one. I hope he write a better one next time.
Summary: Entertaining, but with fluff and a ridiculous ending
This is an entertaining book, and a fast read. I tore through it, not only because it isn't very long, but also because the author has a simple, easy-to-read style. Mezrich is quite effective at weaving a good story.

It's obvious that the author is making up a lot of the details in the book, because the main character could not possibly have remembered all the dialogue and details recounted in the book. The cheesy "romance" between Semyon and Allie added nothing at all to the book and really should have been left out.

The ending, featuring an afterword from Semyon himself, insults the reader's intelligence. He claims they were out on a crusade to bust the evil casinos. Well, I hate to break it to you Semyon, but the casinos kicked you out long before you did any real damage to their bottom lines. And unlike what Semyon suggests, there's nothing to indicate that the team was on a Robin Hood mission--they weren't giving the money to the poor, or using it to fund counseling for problem gamblers. The kicker of it all is that Semyon suggests that he was motivated by open-source software to share his discoveries. If that were really true, Semyon wouldn't be hawking $40 DVDs in the book; instead, he would freely share exactly how to execute his "techniques."

Despite the factual gloss and Semyon's apparent self-delusions, the book is a fun way to spend a few days of reading time. I'd recommend it if you enjoyed "Bringing Down the House," though that earlier title is superior.
Summary: Not playing with a full deck
One would like to believe that a group of MIT students truly did take Vegas for millions as Ben Mezrich claims. But in a era when diarists and autobiographers are routinely getting caught in lies, it's very difficult to believe this story. First, it reads like a bad pulp novel, filled with every possible B-movie cliche--security room beatings, casino owners waving guns in their faces on Aruban golf courses, swarthy Europeans threatening to kill them if they ever come back to Monte Carlo. Mix in a cast of characters straight out of central casting--the Russian math genius, the bombshell blond, the screwup with a drug problem, the obese nerd, and the charismatic mystery "leader" who hides hundreds of thousands of dollars in laundry baskets all over the greater Boston area. Then add sexual misunderstandings and B-movie "dialogue," and the author's own self-indulgent "visits" to Vegas brothels and casinos to "retrace" the kids' journey, and you get a far-fetched potboiler seemingly untethered to verifiable facts. Why, for example, did Mezrich not interview the kids' nemesis, a Vegas private eye who follows their movements and foils their plans everywhere they go? Why are there no interviews with security guards and casino managers who roughed them up in Vegas, Aruba, and Monte Carlo? How do we can believe that any of these people even existed, and that any of this is true, when Mezrich swallows their tale hook line and sinker? Read this entertaining but ultimally vacuous trifle for what it is--all bluff and fluff.

We live in the Las Vegas area & could only be considered modest gamblers yet feel the book well worth owning. They are always impressed!

Summary: Quite so, Mr. Bond
Casino Royale is the 1st in the original Bond Series by Ian Fleming. This book introduces us to Bond and develops a character rich in emotion and personal insight. We find out Bond has recently been "awarded" a 00 status by the British Secret Service for some unsavory acts that he committed against terrorists. Bond does not describe the award as something he is particualry proud of but rather as something that had to be done for the good of his country.

The plot revolves around SMASH, a soviet organization bent on killing all foreign spies. One of their top dogs named La Chieffre, finds himself in a pickle after losing a lot of their money. In an attempt to regain it, he resorts a last ditch effort, high stakes gambling at Casino Royale. Bond is sent to stop him from recovering the funds. The story at that point is classic Bond and progresses with amazing clarity and execution.

The second half of the novel revolves around a relationship Bond develops with a young woman named Vespa. They fall in love and Bond is set to marry her, except that she is acting mysteriously. The ending is quite a shocker, especially the last line.

On a side note, a new Bond film is set to be released based on this novel and named the same. Read the book first and then see the movie is my suggestion. The book is great and you will see why Bond is unforgettable.

Summary: Not one of Fleming's best...
I have read Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, The Man with the Golden Gun, From Russia with Love, and Casino Royale. I have come to the conclusion that Fleming's Bond novels are hit or miss. I would consider Casino Royale to be a miss. However, it was his first book so it is understandable.

One major problem is that Fleming had not fully developed the character of James Bond yet in this novel. Bond is not the Bond people know at this point. Granted the character of Bond is quite different in the Fleming novels than the movies anyways but in Casino Royale, he resembles neither.

Another problem is the plot. James Bond must go to a casino and defeat a Russian agent ,Le Chiffre, in baccarat. Le Chiffre is trying to win money in order to pay back a Russian union in which he illegally took $25 million from. Le Chiffre knows if he does not get the money he will be killed. MI-6 feels it would humialate the agent and Russia if Bond can keep from winning the money. Now this plot would work well if this was a short story but it is hard to make an entire novel based upon it. In fact, the climax in the book takes place only 2/3 through it which shows that Fleming was running out of ideas.

The book is not all bad. There are some good points. The last third of the book digs into Fleming's political philosophy which he normally ejects into his books. As someone who is a fan of history and politics, I always find this fascinating. Ian Fleming, believe it or not, was a very politically conservative person. Also, the baccarat game between Bond and Le Chiffre is very exciting and written very well.

I noticed that a lot of reviewers had a problem with Fleming describing everything in great detail. This is just his style, after reading a few Bond books you get used to it. Like I said Casino Royale is not one of Fleming's best. My favorite one is From Russia with Love. It has a better plot and is more fascinating because it gives a detailed look into the Russian Spy system. Also, Fleming developed Bond's character by the time he wrote From Russia with Love.

Summary: Interesting contrast to the films
This was very interesting to read. It's the first James Bond novel, and also the only one that was not made into a film as part of the James Bond franchise. (At least not yet. I understand the upcoming James Bond film is Casino Royale.) I'm not sure I like the character of James Bond very much in this, but he does have a lot more depth than in the movies. He's also more fallible. I love the cover art on this book, and love even more that the picture of the girl on the front matches the description of the girl in the book, instead of being unrelated glamorous-looking girl.
