Summary: One of my child's favorite books
The book teaches days of the week, numbers, and some fruit.
Each day the caterpillar eats more than the last day. It is great! My son asked for this book. He will say the fruit of the day. I have gotten to understand the number. 1, 2, 3 strawberries. He loves the holes in the book representing the caterpillar eating his way through.

I recommend this book.
Summary: A Very Spiritual Story
This was one of my daughter's favorite, and one of mine too. The story has a lot of excitement and dramatic tension to it, even though it's extremely calming and great for bedtime. The version we had included a sound chip at the end, and the added dimension of sound really intensifies the entire experience and makes the book a Super-Duper Classic. It's like you're out there in the fields with your kid and these caterpillars, and for me, looking back on it, there's no other way to describe the feeling better than Spiritual.
Summary: Delightful read, gorgeous illustrations, fun for all
The story is darling, and sure to delight both parents and kids alike. The book is very interesting for the tactile infant/toddler due to its ingenious page design. If you haven't seen the book for yourself, trust me it's a delight to read AND touch. Flaps for little fingers to explore, holes through pages allowing for an interesting story line as well. Just buy it!

I'm a huge fan of collage-type art and this book will delight art lovers of all ages. If you ever have the opportunity to view Eric Carle's art collection just go! Take the kids to the art museum --they'll recognize the art from Carle's books and delight in the experience.

Summary: This is THE caterpillar book to own!
I echo all of the favorable comments in the other reviews. This book has the best photos I've seen in any field guide of any kind. Shows not only the caterpillar but the resulting butterfly or moth - and, so, can also be helpful with moth identification due to the dearth of other publications on moths. This book covers a wide spectrum of caterpillars and should make it easy for anyone to identify them.
Summary: At last a Guide that Includes Moth Caterpillars!
Moth caterpillars are more numerous (moth species outnumber butterfly species 10 to one), but books to help you identify these are rare to say the least, and most of those that do cover moths as well as butterflies are both very technical and expensive. "Caterpillars of Eastern North America: A Guide to Identification and Natural History" fills the need (for the eastern part of the continent at least) for a reasonably comprehensive guide to both moth and butterfly larvae, with the moths not shortchanged. It can be helpful to a degree in the west as well, but I hope a western guide will soon grace the book stores. We still have no Peterson guide to western moths to match the eastern one!

The color photos are beautiful and the text informative. A perfect book to help the naturalist or anybody who is curious about the "worms" in their garden. I recommend it highly.
Summary: Inchworms, oh my!
Not too long ago in human history, people thought that caterpillars and butterflies were two entirely different critters. This book illustrates beautifully how different the pupual stage of the butterfly is from the adult! So many of us can identify a Monarch caterpillar, but how about a swallowtail or a sulphur? And, yeah, you know what a Gypsy Moth caterpillar looks like, and maybe even a Wooly Bear, but what do they TURN INTO?

The pictures in this book will tell you! I'll say that this book isn't for the rank beginner, they'd probably do better with "Caterpillars in the Field and Garden : A Field Guide to the Butterfly Caterpillars of North America". And neither is it a definitive guide to all the caterpillars (that book has yet to be written). But it fits the niche right in-between. The pictures of the caterpillars are great; true to life and color, although the adult pictures are small, taken from pinned, collected adults, which makes for sometimes faded specimens and could never be used as a field guide as most of the moths never fan their wings.

Moths are the primary reason to buy this book. If you've ever found a caterpillar in your garden and just don't know what it is, it's just as likely (if not sometimes more so) to be a moth as a butterfly. The beginner books don't include many moths, despite the fact that moth caterpillars can be just as colorful, and large!

The author gives a summary on each page of the more common species, what they look like, whether instars are different from stage to stage, range maps, and most importantly: WHAT THEY EAT. I'm not talking about whether you have to worry about finding these guys on your tomatoes, or in your cereal cabinet. Caterpillar species specialize on a certain type of food plant or plants. Sometimes the ONLY way to tell two species apart is to see what the caterpillar eats.

The tips in this book will help you on your way to raise caterpillars at home, find eggs on plants, even identify some common diseases and parasites.

Aspiring lepidopterists will find this book useful to move from novices to informed backyard naturalists.

Summary: Favorite Bedtime and Class Story
This story adds a new spin on an old journey! A caterpillar too stressed out to see clearly and too ridden with anxiety to accomplish the task ahead of him is shown how to relax by himself! In addition to this being my child's absolute favorite bedtime story,it is the favorite of her first grade class. I read to the class once a month and even though I bring other books, they always ask me to read this one. The class is intrigued by the caterpillar and the bright water color illustrations. They love to relax with the adorable caterpillar.

I especially like the author's choice of vocabulary. Kids today are smarter than we think and they appreciate being spoken to in an intelligent manner. If the occasional child is challenged by words like, "nourished, confident, and accomplish," then it is a perfect opportunity to teach them the meaning of these wonderful words that are meant to fortify our children's minds and bodies. In today's stressed out, rush about world, this book should be mandatory!
Summary: The Goodnight Caterpillar
Book was easy to read and undestand and my daughter liked it. Made her feel better.
Summary: too wordy for little kids
I know it is meant for relaxation, and it was definately boring enough to want to put it down and go right to sleep. However, the story was too wordy and the vocabulary very advanced for anyone in the 5-8 year range.

Summary: Spanish version of a classic!
This Spanish version of "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" is just as cute as the English version. Children will love the pages of varying sizes with holes where the caterpillar has eaten up the food.

You can also practice counting up to five with your little one as the bug eats one apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, etc.

The vocabulary in this book DOES require a Spanish speaker in the home. My husband does not speak Spanish and this book is too hard for him to read to our babies, whereas he can read other Spanish board books. Additionally, as it is only in Spanish, my husband cannot compare the Spanish words to English.

Still, I think it's a great addition to your library if one adult speaks Spanish and you are trying to teach your children the language too.

Summary: So cool!
In case you aren't familiar with this book, it is about a caterpillar who eats and eats and eats. The board book version has holes in the pages so the reader can see what he has eaten. It is so cute! The illustrations are adorable and the kids love it! We are a bilingual family so my boys have the Spansih version. It's super and very durable!
Summary: A wonderful way to introduce Spanish into the classroom or y
This is a wonderful Spanish translation of a classic. This story flows whether you are reading in English or Spanish. Children are so familiar with this story that they embrace the Spanish easily. This translation is a must have in the multi-lingual classroom.

Summary: Educational and Fun
My 3 year old daughter loves it. It explains the process at a level she can understand. Great when used with the Butterfly Garden.
Summary: The Perfect Butterfly Book for Preschool-Third Grade
I am the director of a lower school (pre-k-2nd) and we have used this book for years. It is the perfect way to introduce children to the wonderful world of metamorphosis. And if you can also actually get the Painted Lady Butterflies and "grow" them in your class, it is an invaluable experience. We have our children keep journals and then buy them each a copy of this great book (it's cheap in paperback) and they get to keep the experience forever. One correction to another review: painted ladies and all butterflies do spin chrysalids, not cocoons. They look similar, but the chrysalis usually has little specks of gold in it, which is where the name comes from. Yes I am a huge fan of this book--and a huge fan of butterflies. This author also has a lovely book about honeybees, called Honeybees.
Summary: THE Book to accompany Butterfly Houses, Pavillions
We got this book in addition to a home "Butterfly Pavillion" by InsectLore. It prepared my son and us for what to expect as the Painted Lady Butterflies were developing through each stage. So even during the lulls in the action, we could spark some anticipation. Which heightened the whole process for my 5 year old.
We also found out this book is used at his kindergarten for their butterfly learning.
This is the first Let's-Read-And-Find-Out book we've bought and were impressed enough to want to get the other books in the series.

Summary: The First Complete Guide to Butterfly Larvae
"Caterpillars in the Field and Garden: A Field Guide to the Butterfly Caterpillars of North America" fulfills the very real need for the identification of the caterpillars of butterflies and skippers from North America. While not covering much in the way of moths (they have a token few at the end of the book) this book does pretty much what the author says it will do- help you identify the caterpillars of just about any butterflies found in North America, north of Mexico. The moths (which make up ten times species as butterflies) have numerous caterpillar forms and to identify these I would recommend the guide to eastern North American caterpillars by David L. Wagner.

One nice (and important) touch are the illustrations of the adults of most butterflies.

I annually take part in the 4th of July Butterfly Count and you can be sure I'll bring a copy of this book to the next one to see if we can locate some of the caterpillars of the butterflies we spot.

This is a great guide for anyone interested in butterfly gardens (helps you identify the immature stages), amateur naturalists or just the plain curious.
Summary: a field guide i feel good about endorsing
As far back as I can remember (about 4 years now), I have had a gripping fascination with caterpillars. I can't claim any real expertise in identifying caterpillars - being merely an armchair larval lepidopterist - but I've spotted a strange caterpillar not mentioned in this volume. It can stretch itself between two branches so that when birds and squirrels try to pluck it from the branch it gives a curious tone, almost sharing an identical timbre with the mouth harp. I've read this manuel backwards and forwards and cannot identify this specimen.

This book also has wonderful pictures.
Summary: From caterpillars do butterflies grow
For a couple years now, I've been trying to learn all I can about butterflies. It all started in 2002 when I made it through a lazy, long summer day by playing hopskotch. While hopping around the cracked sidewalk, I saw a sadddle-back moth caterpillar! Then this year, I saw a Monarch butterfly breaking out of the sac its caterpillar had made on one of the arms of the front porch family glider. So I was really ready for CATERPILLARS IN THE FIELD AND GARDEN.

Authors Thomas J Allen, Jim P Brock and Jeffrey Glassberg know what they're talking about. They've studied, looked long and hard at, and lived with caterpillars and butterflies for years. They've also put all that book learning and field work into a clearly written, well organized guide with many helpful pictures.

Their book gives the English and scientific names, identification, host plant, habitat and garden tips for each of over 500 butterfly caterpillars. It also has good photos of each caterpillar and butterfly. But the authors warn that the pictures are of caterpillars when they're that close to making the sac from which butterflies break away. Based on the very few examples found so far, young caterpillars don't look that much like their older forms.

A female butterfly can lay as many as 100-300 eggs. But only about 1-2 will make it through life to become a butterfly. Too many will be killed by bacterial, fungal or viral diseases; or parasite flies and wasps; or people; or pesticides. Many of us now see the need to reduce pesticide and hazardous material use. With this book, we'll know butterfly caterpillars when we see them. So we'll know better than to spray and swat them.

What I take away from this beautiful work is how good butterfly caterpillars and butterflies are for us and our green spaces. Most caterpillars going after our salad or vegetable plants aren't going to grow up to be butterflies. Butterfly caterpillars and butterflies go for North America's native plants and trees. That's all they need, along with shelter from the wind, nectar, flat stones for sunning, and damp sand or gravel for salt. And their favorite pig-out food: fermenting fruits!

Summary: Lionni has Inched his way to Success
Once upon a time there was a cute, little, green inch worm hanging out on a piece of grass. One day, a robin came up to eat him, but the inch worm talked the robin into letting him measure the robin's tail. Being such a useful worm, the robin did not eat him, but took him to other birds so that they could have something measured by the smart inch worm. Finally, a nightingale told the worm to measure his song or he would eat the little inch worm. Using his little worm brain, the inch worm began measuring the song until he had inched away to safety.
This wonderful book, written and illustrated by Leo Lionni, won the Caldecott Honor in 1961. He has taken a little worm and made the reader fall in love with it through the worm's usefulness in measuring and his cunning ability to escape the hungry nightingale. Even though there are many different scenes, with many various shades of green on them, Lionni has illustrated the little worm in such a way that the reader can always point him out. Children would enjoy finding the worm on each page, especially at the end of the book when he is hiding from the nightingale. Also, we always see the story from an outside perspective; eye level with the grass. It is as if we are another small animal looking in on the story.
The background of each page is pretty much the same. All Lionni has illustrated on each page is the worm and the other details that are needed during that part of the story. For example, while the inch worm is measuring the legs of the heron, Lionni has only portrayed the heron with the worm inching down its leg. I think this technique is good for younger audiences because it helps children focus on the story and keeps their attention for more specific details. This also makes sense because there is a small portion of text to read on each page which means the audience does not have much time to look at the illustrations while the reader is reading to them. As for colors, Lionni has kept them realistic. For example, the flamingo is a bright pink whereas the nightingale's colors are calmer. Overall, the colors in the book make the readers feel at ease and calm. The dull greens of the grass and the open, white background keeps the reader moving along at a steady pace. It's almost as if we know that the inch worm is going to outsmart the different birds and there is no need to get over-excited.
Lionni has intertwined the illustrations and the text in a way that they are dependent on each other. Although you could get the gist of the story by either reading the text or looking at the pictures, by having the illustrations support the text, the reader gets a more detailed, visual story. However, Lionni leaves room for the imagination to add on to the story at any time.
Overall, I loved this book. Lionni has creatively illustrated this cute story, making children and adults want to read it over and over again.
If you are looking for instructional ideas, I would read this story to students in primary grades before doing a lesson on measuring. Then I would have students measure different things around the classroom including themselves. I would also use this book when talking about different types of art. I would have children do a collage or make something with decoupage. They could even re-create a scene from the book!

Summary: 5 Childrens Books.
One of my favorite 5 bookes was Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni. The reason is, is that the worm in the story is very clever and thinks his way out of a sticky situation. That is what I like about authors like Leo Lionni. They can always come up with a great little story that influences so many children in such a positive way.
Summary: Inching Along!
This Caldecott Honor Book is easy listening for the early child and the young child as a new schoolyear begins. An industrious inch worm is the main character. He engages himself with measuring a variety of birds and lastly outwits the hungry nightingale using his measuring savvy.

Teacher Note: This book can be used to introduce the young child to using standard measurement tools. It can also be used for activities with creative non-traditional measurement activities. For example: Paper clips, hands, feet, craft sticks, shoes, beans, etc. This book can be a springboard to a thematic unit on measurement. It can be extended for study of birds, other nature studies, art experiences, and musical activities as well.

Summary: The Beautiful Caterpillars
This book will change the way you feel about caterpillars. It transforms them from ugly pests into objects of beauty and of intellectual fascination. Based on more than twenty-five years of field research in the tropics by Janzen and Hallwachs and their assistants, it contains not only magnificent photos but also a wealth of information on the behavior and ecology of the species represented. It is at the same time a wonderful coffee table book and a great naturaly history read. In sum, I loved this book, and intend to give it as Christmas presents to all of my nature-loving friends.
Summary: Don't Forget the Larvae
We don't generally like insects much, remembering how they sting, sicken, or impoverish us, and forgetting that they do us invaluable service in the reproduction of new generations of countless plant species. We do like butterflies because they are so beautiful and harmless, but we do not like caterpillars because they are squirmy and eat our plants. There are countless books featuring pictures of beautiful butterflies and moths, but few featuring the larval forms of the insect. A look at _100 Caterpillars: Portraits from the Tropical Forests of Costa Rica_ (The Belknap Press of Harvard University Press) by Jeffrey C. Miller, Daniel H. Janzen, and Winifred Hallwachs shows that the emphasis on the flying forms may be misplaced. The gorgeous, large-format pictures here show all the colors of which adult butterflies can boast, plus an enormous variation in patterns, spikes, hairs, body plans, and more. Indeed, after the hundred photographs, there is a section of the book devoted to detailed descriptions of the behavior and ecology of each caterpillar, and for each there is a small picture of the adult into which it will grow. Almost all the adults are more drab and less interesting than their larvae.

Caterpillars exist to perform two duties, eating and avoiding being eaten. The pictures seldom show the caterpillars feeding, but frequently show the defensive structures that keep others from feeding upon them. There are many caterpillars here with hairs or "urticating spines", filled with an irritant that can cause sharp pain. So watch out for the spines, although you never have to worry about a bite; caterpillars never evolved a venomous bite, so you can let even the spined ones walk over you. The wonderful _Acraga hamata_ looks as if it is covered in a mosaic of transparent glass beads; this is gelatinous material that breaks away if the caterpillar is grabbed. Several of the specimens here are hard to see because they look just like a torn leaf or a branch or a mat of fungus. For mimicry, there is nothing to beat _Hemeroplanes triptolemus_, an undistinguished drab green caterpillar when at rest. When disturbed, however, it raises and inflates its hind end, which takes on the appearance of a viper's head, complete with eyes, mouth, and nose spots. It holds still in this position, but if further provoked, can even make the viper's head strike at the offending predator, although there is no threat of a bite. The authors say that even if you know that, it is hard to keep from withdrawing your hand in shock if you are performing the experiment yourself.

This beautiful book includes pictures of the "Area de Conservacin Guanacaste", the World Heritage Site that contains the forest from which these specimens come, and also pictures of the locals who work as collectors, and the barn where bags of specimen caterpillars feed and develop. There are also descriptions of the equipment used to make these spectacular photos, and recommendations for how others can do the same. The authors include a commendable section about ethics concerning the handling of the little creatures that they obviously admire and love: you must not anesthetize or chill the caterpillar as a means to force quiescence, and you must not tease the caterpillar excessively: "it will respond negatively, either by curling up for hours on end, fainting and falling off the prop, breaking into a running bout, or worse, spitting up gut contents." Words to live by.
