Summary: Mediocre explanations, poorly proofread.
If you're searching for a CCNA study guide, I'd advise looking elsewhere. While reading, I've noticed many typographical errors, poor editing, and in one case, an entire paragraph repeated for no apparent reason... and I'm only up to chapter five.

Many of the explanations are difficult to understand at best. I frequently find myself searching other resources while trying to make sense of the incomplete and often confusing material.

If you must get this guide, wait for the sixth edition. Hopefully, it will have gone through a more thorough proofing process.
Summary: Sqeaked by with an 850
I used this book solely to study for the CCNA (2nd attempt). By the time I finished this book, I was able to master the practice tests on the enclosed CD. I found the actual CCNA questions to be much harder than the Sybex practice quetions. My coworkers used the Cisco Press books and passed easily. Todd Lammle's book is a great resource for learning subnetting; which is crucial to success on the CCNA. I would recommend the book for CCNA prep, but not as a sole resource.
Summary: Good Book
If you want to quickly understand Cisco networks this is a must read. I read the book twice over in one month and it basically gives you a sound knowlege of Cisco stuff. The labs are execellent. Gives you good CLI knowlege. The book helps demystify subnetting I can do it quickly now..very important in an exam scenario where you dont have time..I also liked the Frame Relay section

Summary: Very little on ASA
This book is very helpful for PIX firewalls, but is mislabeled for ASA. There is very little on the ASA product. Usually just a mention of command differences between ASA and PIX. If you are looking for a book on ASA do not buy this book.
Summary: One point makes this book a must have
Most commands explained have three lines:
PIX 6.3
PIX 7.0
FWSM

This allows you to work on multiple platforms easily with one handbook. Also tells you when something ISN'T supported so you don't have to go digging on the web.
Summary: Must have, easy to grab book.
I recently read the book titled "Cisco ASA and PIX Firewall Handbook" by David Hucaby. ISBN: 1587051583. I've been working with Cisco PIX firewall's for several years and while they are fairly straight forward to configure the basic function of the system, some of the more robust features of the product can be complex in concept. This is certainly the case when considering all of the new features of the PIX 7.0 code.
This title does an outstanding job at bridging the information gap for the old crusties that have used PIX for years. Each section is laid out to explain and contrast how each feature is configured for the Cisco PIX, the new Adaptive Security Appliance, and the Firewall Switch Module and for the IOS Firewall code. It has everything you should and need to know to administer the equipment effectively. There is little fluff or filler in these pages. Mostly straight to the point configuration examples that allow the readers to maximize their time getting work done.
I was really excited when I saw that Cisco Press was coming out with a title that covers the new Cisco ASA (Adaptive Security Appliance). My excitement quickly turned to confusion when I started reading through the title. Aside from the great documentation on the PIX, FWSM and FW IOS, it's very difficult to identify what information pertains to the Adaptive Security Appliance. I'm still not clear why this book claims to include information on the ASA. It's either ignorance on my part or there is not enough content in the book to justify the title. This observation in no way takes away from the book rich information regarding the FWSM 2.x, PIX 6.x and PIX 7.x. Since the title was published not long after the PIX 7.0 code was released, I wonder if it was too soon to cover a topic so new in a book. The author however, covers the main features of 7.0 very well and it's extremely helpful to have this handbook for those transitioning to the new PIX 7.0 code.
I think this title is best suited for any person that administers Cisco security devices like the Cisco PIX, the FWSM or running Cisco Firewall IOS in their environment. The title covers more detail that what the Cisco on-line (CCO) has to offer in most cases. The title picks up where the product command reference and configuration examples leave off. Certainly a must have title for any security administrator to have in order to ensure that the equipment is leveraged to it's maximum potential and to minimize mis-configurations that may contribute to increased exposure or unintended security risks.
There aren't many diagrams in the book; however there are diagrams where they serve best. Most of the book in centered on the CLI configuration of the equipment. Administrators that rely or use the web interface to configure these devices won't see much supporting information on the web interface. In my opinion, that's a good thing, because administrators should know what's going on under the covers of any GUI interface for independency and security reasons.
Some of the sections that I found the most beneficial where the sections that cover the new features like Transparent Firewall Mode, Active-Active Failover and Using Security Contexts to Make Virtual Firewalls. These are all new features that have a lot a benefit. When learning something new, it's always good to get as much information about the subject as possible. It helps to formulate a solid understanding of the new topic.
All-in-All this is a great title worthy of the Cisco Press legacy. The author has done a great job covering all the essentials in one easy to grab title.

Summary: good for training, but seems incomplete
It is a good tool for exam practice, but doesn't seem too useful for practical network mapping, simulation, or planning. There's just too much that's incomplete. Commands are missing including some advanced routing protocol support, there's no support for larger switches, and some of the diagnostics are pretty kludgy. There is a CCNP version of the software that supposedly addresses these, but I haven't tried it. It may seem fairly expensive, but it is still a lot cheaper than buying an assortment of cisco gear to run through the exercises.
Summary: Too many mistakes
I read the other reviews on Amazon before purchasing this product. I saw some were good and some were bad. I thought, well, people have different opinions and I may like it. No. There are too many mistakes. Others have commented on VLAN issues with the 2950's. I had the same problem. Any more than 3 vlans and it just wouldn't work. It was very frustrating in that I wasted ALOT of time thinking it my configs at first. Then there is some kind of bug with pings. When you ping from one specific PC to another across your virtual network the entire application shuts down. This will consistently happen so you must remember which PC's you can and can't ping to and from safely and make sure to save everything before every ping. You will put in configurations then 5 minutes later do a "sh run" and they will mysteriously be gone. Or take a network statement out from under OSPF but it just will NOT remove it. Lastly there is the user friendly-ness. I rate this as a zero. It is the most cumbersome application I have ever used. It would have helped had I been able to open the user guide but that did nothing when I clicked on it. I lost many a network because I didn't save the topologies and configs correctly. So I called Boson for help. You have to leave your name and number and they will call back within 48 hours. That was 2 weeks ago. I have not heard from them.
Summary: Poor Implementation of ACL's
I sent the company some feedback last week and have heard nothing from them. Product does not apply ACL's properly to interfaces and has problems recording matches to outbound ACL's. Also there are problems with alternate vlans on 2950 switches. Numerous bugs running verion 5.07 with latest patch. Was a very disappointing purchase.

Summary: Everything You Need to Know, Updated to Current Tests
Cisco Press has re-issued the complete Certification Library in a Third Edition. These four books cover:
BSCI Exam 642-801
BCMSN Exam 642-811
BCRAN Exam 642-821
CIT Exam 642-831
which are the current versions of the exams as listed on Cisco's web site (November 8, 2005).

The set of four books contains updated copies of:
CCNP Self-Study CCNP CIT Exam Certification Guide
CCNP Self-Study CCNP BSCI Exam Certification Guide
CCNP Self-Study CCNP BCRAN Exam Certification Guide
CCNP Self-Study CCNP BCMSM Exam Certification Guide. It includes four companion CD-ROMs that contain test banks with a total of more than 800 practice questions.

Although this is a somewhat intimidating amount of material, buying it in a bundle like this gives you everything you need in one storage box and at a good cost savings over buying the books separately.
Summary: Good value, good books
Overall, thought the BCMSN was best, then BSCI, then BCRAN, then CIT.

BCMSN is an excellent book, well written and comprehensive. It some nice practice scenarios at the end that are tough and really test your knowledge. Almost everything on the exam was in the book.

BCSI book is also excellent. There are nice practice scenarios at the end of each chapter that test your knowledge. It's a thick book (~900 pages!) and there were very few unpleasant surprises on the exam. Only quibble is that the ISIS chapters could've been easier to understand.

BCRAN is good, but there are a few holes. In particular, there are 2 topics that are woefully inadequate for the exam. Also, no practice scenarios.

CIT is definitely the weakest. It's the shortest book, unnecessarily IMO. It pretty much assumes that you remember all of the "show" and "debug" commands from the previous 3 tests (plus the CCNA) and doesn't really give any examples. The three practice scenarios (only 3 scenarios for a troubleshooting exam!!!) are so-so and there aren't enough of them. To pass the CIT, you definitely need supplmentary materials.
Summary: Excellent
Once you have achieved the CCNA certification, your natural path points toward the Cisco Certified Network Professional certification. This title from Cisco Press is a set consisting of one book for each of the four exams specific to the CCNP certification. This set includes the following books:

--CCNP BSCI Exam Certification Guide, Third Edition, by Claire Gough
--CCNP BCMSN Exam Certification Guide, by David Hucaby
--CCNP BCRAN Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition, by Brian Morgan and Craig Dennis
--CCNP CIT Exam Certification Guide, Second Edition, by Amir S. Ranjbar

This set, covering diverse topics in significant detail, is an excellent CCNP preparation tool. The material in the books focuses on Cisco's published objectives for the CCNP exams, and covers them well. The longest and most unique book in this collection is the volume on routing (BSCI). It's structured to cover the objectives for the 642-801 exam using several tools common to all the books in the set-namely detailed but highly readable text, graphical, tabular, and router configuration examples, Q&A and "Do I Know This Already?" quizzes, and the bundled CDROM. The graphics are first-rate and illustrate key concepts clearly.

What sets the BSCI book apart from the others in the set, and other Cisco Press books I've read, is the series of lab exercises at the end of each chapter. The BSCI labs provide comprehensive scenarios that take in all the concepts taught in each chapter, in step-by-step form. Answers are provided following each example so that you can check your work. This book is particularly well-suited to self-study. This level of detail and the inclusion of labs is key, since in my opinion, the CCNP routing exam (642-801) is the most difficult one in all of Cisco's Professional-level certifications. It's appropriate that the routing book, at 950 pages, contains about a third of the pages of the entire set!

The labs in the routing book cover concepts that Cisco hits hard on the exam questions and simulations, including OSPF, BGP and IS-IS. You'll need a fair amount of Cisco equipment to do the lab work, but it's obtainable on-line and is worth the investment if you want to do well on the exams and really understand the topics. For a book of this size, the routing text is remarkably consistent and error-free. Although I found a few minor errors here and there, the book is well-suited to self-study-in part because it is so accurate. The overall structure and content of this book make it the strongest learning tool I've seen for the BSCI exam.

Although the other three books in the set don't include this comprehensive level of configuration exercises, they do provide some scenario-based material to reinforce concepts.

All the texts are good for instructor-led training, or as a text for web-based training. Although the other three books are all significantly shorter than the routing text, they share many of the excellent traits that makes this set such a strong preparation tool for the CCNP certification exams. I tried to use Exam Cram 2 texts in addition to this Cisco Press set while preparing for the BSCI and BCMSN exams, and quickly found that the Cisco Press set offers by far the clearest, most easily digested, error-free and relevant information.

Each book in this set comes with a CD that contains a high-quality practice exam engine (sourced by Boson), as well as the PDF text of the book and some sample material from other Cisco Press titles. I found the CDs very useful-especially the test engines, since a key part of studying for certification exams that are as difficult as Cisco's CCNP exams is assessing what you've learned and how well you can apply it. The self-tests include questions of each type that appear on the exams, including basic simulation-type questions that are probably best called scenarios; they don't have the look and feel of an actual router or switch interface during configuration, as the exams do. They do, however, show you clearly whether you understand the command syntax and topics being covered. The practice test questions are harder and less forgiving, overall, than what's on the exams. I found that if I could make 75% or better on the sample tests, my scores were significantly better on the CCNP exams.

The weakest book in this set is the CIT text, which sticks strictly to Cisco's published objectives for the exam. As such, it's a bit simplistic and doesn't exercise your mind much when it comes to troubleshooting for results-it's oriented toward procedure rather than outcome. The author lets you know to expect this going in, and I appreciated his honesty. The three scenarios offered at the end of the book are rather weak; I was hoping for substantial troubleshooting exercises. But all of the topics on the CIT exam are fully covered in this book.

The BCMSN and BCRAN books are both excellent long-term references, along with the BSCI text, and cover not only the core topics of the exams but also a lot of information useful to networking people after the exams are distant memories. This trait is the core strength of this set. The layout, graphics, quality writing and editing, and extra learning tools make for an outstanding value. Overall, I can't recommend this set highly enough. The highly motivated learner will find everything in this set that's needed to pass the CCNP exams. That said, however, it is important to have either professional experience, a set of readily available routers and switches, or both, to make it over the CCNP hurdles.

These books have a prominent place on my bookshelf at work and at home. I have two sets because I think the books are that good. Anyone interested in networking at the geek level of detail will be well-served by this set.

Summary: Practical Advice for Converting to IP Telephony
Switching to IP Telephony is one of those decisions that the CEO finds easy to make. Costs decline quite a lot and quality of performance is promised to be acceptable.

Then the problem of implementation is turned over to those who will need to plan, design, implement, operate and troubleshoot the system. That lucky engineer will find that the Cisco solution is still a fairly limited one technically that requires you to make the right decisions . . . or you can end up with a system that doesn't live up to the promise that was made to the CEO. And you can guess who will get the blame for that.

I read a fair number of the Cisco networking books, and I found this one to be more candid, detailed and helpful than anyone one I have seen.

The authors wrote this book to explain what their clients had been having trouble with in implementing the first Cisco IP telephony solutions. That perspective allows you to avoid mistakes others have made.

Those mistakes can come in two areas: the system working or not; and the system's solution fitting the company's needs well or not.

I'm not an engineer, but I found the book to be easy to understand and interesting to read. For an engineer, much of the technical parts of this book will seem like old hat, I'm sure. But the tables are sure to save lots of time and mistakes by simply summarizing what needs to be done in elegant detail. For example, table 6-42 on page 233 tells you which restrictions you should place on calling (from highly restricted for lobby phones to unrestricted for the executive phones). While that's not strictly engineering (more like administration), it's something the engineers need to do properly. If not done correctly, you end up with a situation where employees waste lots of time calling their friends and family in far away countries.

People are much more sensitive to their telephone system than to their computer network. So all the details of satisfying users will be new to many engineers. For example, customizing your solution to account for the right voice-mail service is very important. Do that wrong, and you have everyone in the company angry with you. Chapter 7 is a great help in designing the right solution for your company.

No one will ever get fired for buying and using this book to put in a Cisco IP telephone system. In fact, this book may even help you earn a promotion.

Here is a list of the chapter titles to give you a sense of the book's coverage in its 648 pages:

Chapter 1 Cisco IP Telephony Solution Overview (explains the limits of Cisco technology well)

Chapter 2 Planning, Implementation, Operation and Optimization Overview (a process to get you from here to there)

Chapter 3 Large-Scale Enterprise Requirements for IP Telephony (helps you anticipate problems in the beginning)

Chapter 4 Planning Phase (marrying your IT networks to a telecom application)

Chapter 5 Design Phase (network infrastructure design)

Chapter 6 Design of Call-Processing Infrastructure and Applications (lots of details on choices)

Chapter 7 Voice-Mail System Design

Chapter 8 Implementation (a step-by-step process description)

Chapter 9 Operations and Optimization (software and hardware upgrades, CallManager operation and monitoring tools, optimization tips from time synchronization to IPT network management tools)

Good luck with your system!
Summary: This will separate the successful from the failures!
Many of us have decided to put away our legacy PBX systems and install a VoIP based communication platform, and with all of the benefits clearly visible, we often jump into action without fully realizing the scope of what we are about to undertake. In a VoIP deployment, so many factors must be considered in the design, that often things are left out. In the deployments where QoS, switching infrastructure, and overall network design are ignored, you see problems with reliability and an overall bad taste left in the mouth of the end user. With proper planning, the problems experienced by these design flaws (or often lack of design) can be overcome, and the true glory of the VoIP system will be seen. Cisco has designed an awesome assortment of VoIP enabling technologies, that when used together can, and will, change the way we do business for the better, but only if you have a solid foundation of planning.
The authors of this title, Cisco IP Telephony: Planning, Design, Implementation, Operation, and Optimization , have taken the steps to building a solid VoIP system and set them up in an organized structure, that if followed, will provide a solid and stable installation and deployment. This isn't just another guide to walk you through the CallManager platform, but addresses design constraints of the entire VoIP system including infrastructure analysis, call processing, voice mail, QoS considerations, call flow planning, information on deployment of a pilot system, and acceptance testing processes. Once the platform is deployed, this guide will give you the insight needed to properly tune and maintain you system for many years to come. The many example forms in the back of the book will even walk you through the carrier circuit ordering process, voice mail system design, and even implementation readiness evaluation questionnaires.
I would highly recommend this title to anybody who has decided to install a VoIP system, even if you think you already have your bases covered. You can never be too-organized or have too much planning when undertaking a project of this scope. If you follow the guidelines in this book, you will have a much greater understanding of what's necessary for a successful deployment, and you won't be one of those customers wishing they would have planned things better (as they fix their installation). If asked to rate the book on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the best, I would rate this a 5, and essential to the library of any VoIP engineer.

Summary: A very good book for design engineers.
If you design networks or just want to get a better understanding of Cisco IP Telephony technology pick up this book. Its a great reference and a daily problem solver for your job.

Summary: Included lab is !@#$!$#@! Shame on Boson!
The books are good, and the tests are closer to anything on the CCNA test, although I did notice some of the simulations were buggy with incorrect answers, but Boson should be slapped HARD for including the hamstrung Router Sim LE version. The help does not work. The web connect interface does not work. 2/3rds of the labs are disabled and the ones that work have 2/3rds of the IOS commands disabled. This is meant to prod you into buying the "Full upgrade", at a cost of well over $150. That is quite lame. In addition, the internet scut on Boson is that the Full version also is very buggy and not worth even half the cost charged. The Cisco Academy in San Jose is very outraged at Boson for its poor quality. Ask anyone there.
Summary: Amazing book
It is a great book which covers all topics in order to pass the CCNA exam. You have the router and switch simulator to improve and apply your skills.

I definitely recommend you buy this book if you really want to pass, but also to learn about routers and switches.

Good Luck !!

Summary: Disappointing and frustrating
For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try. Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass! My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam. None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam. I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam. Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day. Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2).
Summary: big disapointment....
Mr. Lammle is still an excellent teacher/writer (the best), but the omission of some crucial material is a setup for test disaster. In particular there is little information on NAT, and zero configuration examples. 4 months ago I recertified on the CCNA and one of the simulation questions was NAT configuration and at least 3 multiple choice were on NAT router commands. I am now tutoring 4 other engineers using this book and we've had to use Cisco Press books to cover NAT and other material that is missing. The Simulator in this book will not do OSPF and EIGRP (both crucial, so we bought Mr. Lammle's routersim from www.routersim.com, this does allow these routing protocols, but VTP doesn't work correctly with the simulator switches. In hindsight I would definitely use Cisco Press now, it doesn't appear that Sybex is keeping up. The Cisco books aren't as well written or real world, but they have everything you need to pass the test.
Summary: Well written, Full coverage of all topics except NAT/PAT
The author has done a good job in writing the book, which provides detailed explanation of all the topics covered in the exam except for NAT/PAT, which is an important objective of the CCNA exam and you can hardly find one CCNA exam that doesn't test your knowledge in that area.

More enhancements on how OSPF works is needed, since it's not covered clearly in the book.

Other than that the book is enough to pass the test except for the points I discussed previously.

One more thing, the bounce exams found in the study tools CD are very workable, never skip them you may encounter the same questions in the exam. I did!
