Summary: Excellent Book to prop the old desk up!!!!
This book has so many errors, and missed topics its not worth your time purchasing this book. I used the BCRAN Student Guide instead to pass this test.
Summary: Cisco's worst, Editor MIA?
I think, for this title, Cisco put 1000 monkeys in a room with 1000 typewriters for a couple of years and then published the results. Of course they made sure it wasn't Shakespeare first, to avoid those pesky accusations of plagiarism...which seems to be the extent of their editing on this title. The most glaring error is the author's repeated insistence that in public key cryptography one provides their private key to the public so information can be encrypted, then the destination party uses the public key to decrypt the information. WHAT!?! Please, please do not do that! C'mon Cisco...even Microsoft got this one right. At one point later on the author seems to demonstrate the process correctly. I imagine he got encryption confused with digital signatures. Ok, fine, but WHERE WAS THE EDITOR!? There are countless other places in the book where the author contradicts himself, and other places he's just dead wrong. Fortunately I have enough experience to spot some of these, but I'm sure not all, since I am obviously still learning. I don't trust the author enough now to believe that he's telling me the truth. This is the worst Cisco Press book I've gotten ahold of yet. This is the last test I have to take for the CCNP and I imagine I'll pass, but it won't be due to this book. Even the CIT book by Ranjbar was better than this. While his didn't really reflect what's on the exam, at least it was very well written. If you can get your hands on the Student Guide for the BCRAN, use that instead and UniverCD on Cisco's site to polish up the rough spots. Rotsa ruck!
Summary: A Cisco disappointment
I was extremely disappointed in this text. I have read several Cisco Press books in the past to prepare for certification exams, and have always been reasonably satisfied. Not so here.

The most frustrating aspect of the book is its dissimilarity with the actual exam. The questions in the book and in the CD are almost exclusively about nitpicky factoids (default timer settings, maximum data rates, etc.) DO NOT BOTHER TO MEMORIZE THESE. Instead, the exam focuses on really understanding the router commands and debug outputs... two topics which the book is very weak on. There were also many, many questions which were not covered in the book.

First off, the subject matter within the BCRAN book is presented in a very conversational and meandering fashion. For example, a command or concept is often mentioned several times in the text before it is explained in the text - if it is ever explained at all. Utterly frustrating.

There are also several sections of the book that are criminally unclear and confusing. I re-read the CHAP section 4-5 times before giving up. I found a CHAP document on the Cisco web site, skimmed it, and immediate understood it perfectly.

Most commands are not well documented in the text, which is a sad contrast to other Cisco Press books. Commands are frequently demonstrated via a single, specific example and without the technical format which explains which portions are fixed, which are optional, which are variable, etc. This book also lacks a reiteration of commands during the foundation summary of each chapter.

I took the test yesterday having used only this book as a study guide. I failed with a heartbreaking 786 (790 to pass.) I have never failed a certification exam before.

You should seriously consider purchasing much cheaper books from other sources.

Summary: OK book but not enought to pass...
Material is good but is missing stuff. Cisco should be ashamed with the ammount of typos. Check out the typos here: http://www.ciscopress.com/title/1587051486# Without the typos I would have given it a 3 maybe 4 stars. Needs to be updated.
Summary: Incomplete; not sufficient material to pass 640-821
I should have read the reviews on this book before taking the exam...I missed it by 5 points, 785/790. That's less than 1 question.

Summary: Garbage In -> Garbage Out
How does an abhorrent piece of study material like this even make it past the editors? I know that if I was an editor, I would NOT want my name associated with this book. Just go to the Cisco Press website and take a look at the 42kb errata file. There is a correction on almost every other page it seems! Please, save your money and your time and look elsewhere for study material. This book will more than likely cause you to fail the test rather than pass.

Summary: Good, but you still need another study guide
I really want to say that this is a good book for you to learn Remote Access for the CCNP exam. However, it is not the book that you use to prepare for the CCNP exam. I prefer Cisco Press or Sybex.

Good(1): I liked the fact that the user setup a scenario and walk the readers through each chapters. I easy to understand and fun to read the book.
Good(2): The author has included a lot of information that is good to know, even if it's not covered on the exam, but as a professional, you should know about it.

Bad(1): No CD or practice exam come with the book.
Bad(2): The questions seems to be easier than the one on the exams.
Bad(3): So many errors and typos, but if you can catch it, that means you understand the stuff.

I would like to keep this book as a reference, becasue I like the author's presentation style.
I would also recommend you to spend an hour in the local bookstore and read a chapter before you buy.

Summary: Don't bother
Book is out of date, filled with typos and inaccurate information. It appears as if it was written in a hurry.

Questions are rather subjective and not the same as the test.

Summary: Myhre has once again proven is expertise with Cisco.
As I have been working to obtain several certification including CCNP I have found that material covering the Remote Access exam has been to few and far between. That's why I was very happy to obtain this book and begin to read and learn how remote access works within the Cisco world.

The book is together in a straight forward and concise manner, as you'll find there are only 400 pages in the complete text, and you'll find that the complete set of exam objectives has been met and covered.

Beginning with WAN and WAN communications basics and then onto the modem and the configuration process, you then work with setting up and configuring the remote access at a central site. From there you are given coverage of the PPP, its use and functions.

The book shows you how to configure and setup ISDN connections, PRI and BRI and make the DDR work. Working with Cisco 700 series routers, SOHO, X.25 and Frame relay are the next set of topics to be dealt with.

Rounding out the text is the use of backup with ISDN lines and the configuration of NAT, followed up with authentication, authorization and accounting. The book has over 200 practice question spread out throughout each chapter. I think that a cd with practice tests and questions would be a nice enhancement but will not detract from the book.

Overall everything seems to be in this manual and looking at what is covered I think the 640-505 exam has been covered completely.

Summary: Excellent Service
Very satisfied with service and book. Product was in good condition as advertised. Arrived within a week of order. Overall very happy with the purchase, would buy again from this seller.
Summary: Good read but riddled with errors.
The authors did a fairly good job in making the dry content matter of BCRAN quite readable and easy to absorb. Out of the whole CCNP curriculum, this was by far the dullest of subjects, but at the hands of Thomas & Quiggle, it was handled nicely. All chapters were clearly written, though the practice questions at the ends of the chapters could have been tougher. The big problem, though, is the fact that this book is full of errors. Thankfully, they're mostly of the editorial kind, glaring at the reader from the page. They actually helped me to see whether I was following the text properly in my mind. If something was out of order, it immediately jumped at me. Obviously not everyone finds such errors "helpful," and it's a shame that a decent book like this was probably rushed to the print and barely edited.
Summary: A Great Book to Own: Both for Test and for Work
I use this book as a main reference book for Remote Access network setup/maintenance in my daily work. And this was the only book I read throughly during preparing my BCRAN test ( I took test the first time last week and passed with a score of 853). I did NOT read Graig Dennis' Cream book but I did all practice questions. I spent one day read briefly on Catherine Paquet's BCRAN book and did all questions on each chapter(Very good questions). I believe ANY single one of those books contains ALL the information you will need to pass the test. The question is how much you can understand the technology only based on the reading. I have to say, I work on the remote access on the daily basis, but still there were a couple of questions on the test I was clueless (the solutions are on Catherine's book but I doubt if I would pay attention on them even I read). So the best bet is get your hands on. At least do all the Case Study on each chapter of this book. Good Luck!
