Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Good Reference I just passed the CCA 4.0 test using This book as my study guide. Other than a couple of glaring errors it was well written: Page 42 incorrectly states that the farm will continue to function for "up to 48 hours" following a datastore failure. It's actually 96 hours. Pg 248 incorrectly states that there are only 14 anonymous user accounts - There are actually 15 If I were a betting man, I'd bet that all three of those things would make good test questions. Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: a little long winded I have started reading the book and find it to long winded. If I want to read PMBOK I would read it, if the book is about Citrix please get to the point. Sometimes technical writers get paid by the word instead of getting to the point. I am at chapter 5 it is starting to scratch the surface, that is alot of reading for nothing. -Travis Summary: MetaFrame Access Suite for Windows Server 2003 Finally a book that not only addresses the technical issues a Citrix administrator needs, but also the often times forgotten business issues that justify why any technology should be implemented. These guys do a great job addressing the paradigm change a system administrator must understand in order to correctly design, implement, administer and troubleshoot a MetaFrame environment. Summary: Author Rebuttal Seven expert technical reviewers from VectorESP, ECC, Osborne, and Citrix reviewed the Chapter 12 content, and we are very confident in its technical accuracy and the separation between the UNIX and Windows content. On the Datastor options, we discussed all available options (including Oracle, MSDE, and DB2) on page 359, but we chose to provide a step-by-step guide only for SQL, since Citrix claims that over 80% of the datastores in the field today are on SQL. The advantage of picking only one of the choices for a step-by-step in-depth discussion was that this allowed readers a true in-depth look, rather than just a brush by look that could have been provided if we tried to cover all the choices. Additionally, we discussed the datastor design options in depth in the design chapters of the book, which outline a very rigorous and strict approach to all aspects of the solution. As future reviews will attest to, we are very confident that this book is unique and much more in depth than the other guides when it comes to networking, security, and disaster recovery aspects of Server-Based Computing. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Thorough book and CD is a nice bonus Wonderful book, although CD could have been more thorough, still, very, very good. And excellent customer support. Summary: Decent till the last few chapters, cd quite bad In the process of reading it to prep for my certification test, I found multiple problems with it. You can still pass using this book, but the experience will not be pleasing. I'll list them as best I can. --Different chapters list different minimum requirements (DOS3.3 vs DOS4.0) for the same module. --The last few chapters of the book have multiple errors in the self-test answer keys. They are obvious things like Right- A, C, D and Wrong- A, C, D or their descriptions a few pages back contradict the answers. At least one of the electronic practice test questions is the same way. --After a few runs through the electronic practice test, it's painfully obvious that it is repeating the same questions in the same order every time, not grabbing fresh questions from the question pool for each run or installation. So far their tech support has not replied on this. (original email sent in second week of December) -- The "Update" link provided in the enclosed software (for test 220) takes you to the publisher's web page for test 218. This page shows that there are no updates available, even though the CD came in a book for the next version of the test. I was unable to find any mention of the 220 test on their website. ---- these items are more aesthetic than technical, but contribute ---- --The wording and emphasis of the book does not match up to the actual test questions. --The material covered, both in a chapter and overlapped between chapters is laid out in a stumbling and awkward way. --The "drivetime" audio tracks on the included CD were read by an engineer, not proper audio talent. I found myself subconsciously tuning out the annoying voice. --The quality (tone, volume and clarity) of the audio tracks was not consistent and one was quite bad. Summary: Book Has Some Worth But... I passed 220 today. This book has some worth. It follows the Citrix Guidelines as outlined on citrix.com. However, this box is filled with typos. Questions at the end of the chapters have many errors. Portions of chapters seem to be talking about MetaFrame 1.8. Furthermore, there were some questions on the exam mentioning Citrix subsystems, which were nowhere in this book. I used this book and the PDF's from Citrix's web site. This book is good for granular details like how much hard drive space, RAM, and color resolution you need for MF components. If you have never used MF XP, you will not pass with this book. Furthermore, I would seriously check out the Sybex book to compare it with this before purchasing. This is OK as a reference but only if you have the experience with the product to identify all of the typos (and there are lots!) Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Good book for Architects and design professionals This book is written for system architects and design professionals, covers architecture and design concepts. I would strongly recommend this book for advance users as the book cover says it dives deep into the advance settings and performance tuning recommendations for Metaframe implementation. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Excellent step-by-step. Excellent Step-by-step book for planning and installing Citrix Metaframe XP. I bought this and one other Citrix reference book when I needed to design and install a 3-server farm -- the other one ("Configuring Citrix Metaframe XP for Windows"; Broomes, Khnaser, Crump and Craft; Syngress; 2002) was useless. However, this book gave excellent structure to the entire process, almost like a good cookbook. The first half of the book is about analysis, design, and installation. The second half is about fine-tuning and adding some of the more esoteric features that Citrix offers. The 2002 edition that I have was written for Windows 2000 Server, but I found that it was easy to adjust to Windows Server 2003. There may be new editions for 2003 now, I am not sure. The writing is clear and concise, with ample illustrations and screen shots. The author exhibits a dry and intelligent sense of humor that makes the book rather entertaining to read. Let's face it; it's not exactly the most entertaining material. But short chapters, with embedded checklists and summaries, make it easier to digest, without the distracting air of a "dummies" book. Why only 4 stars when the book was so useful to me? The subtitle of the book is "A System Administrator's Guide to Citrix Metaframe XP/1.8 and Windows Terminal Services", and I simply don't consider it to be a good administrator's guide, in the traditional sense. There is a ton of good information in here, but it's not laid out in classic reference style; the structure is A) planning and installation, and B) fine-tuning. So in that sense, I consider it more of an installer's reference than an administrator's guide. But I should point out that the chapter on Citrix and Microsoft licensing is the best I've ever read, simply for explaining what you need to buy (tough combinations), when to activate it, and what happens when you don't, and why. I hope this review helps you as much as this book helped me. Summary: A VERY good overview First of all I'm surprised this outstanding book hasn't received more raving reviews. I can only say: this is a superb Citrix book. The book is NOT a study guide, and as such should not be used to pass a Citrix exam. It's not at all detailed enough to fit that need. What need it does fit though is for the administrator who needs to get acquainted with Citrix technology, and have a broad but reasonably detailed overview of installation and migration Citrix concepts, possible mixed Citrix environment issues, and coverage of items he will run into everyday. If you fit this description, you will benefit from this book. The book starts off with a good introduction of Citrix client behavior, Citrix and Windows architecture, thin client computing approaches and the like. Even though it's heavily MS oriented, even MCSE certified people will see this as a welcome refresher. This approach is a *whole* lot better than "The definitive guide to Citrix MetaFrame XP" E-book, which starts writing about pricing from page 2 or so, without any introduction into the thin client computing world. Chapter 6 and 7 (70 pages in total) focus on the Citrix planning phase (where to put the zone data collector, which database product to pick, migration paths, machine scaling, physical drive layout suggestions etc.), which is very useful material for people involved in Citrix projects, managers as well as technicians. Chapter 8 goes deeper into the actual installation of Citrix. From that moment on, a more or less modular approach is taken. You can freely skip chapters, since all are self-containing. Only very important things are repeated throughout the book (not copied, like Hipson's "Mastering the Windows 2000 Registry"). All necessary things a Citrix admin should know are then covered in a single chapter (TS user configuration options, Terminal Server connections, Deploying RDP and ICA clients, Security etc.). Chapter 21, Performance tuning and Resource Management, is a gem. As many SQL administrators know, performance tuning can be hard. Many practical performance testing highlights and hints for performance increase are provided though that can be put into practise almost immediately. The tips that are given can be divided into three broad groups: In the meanwhile, references are given to third party tools and web sites, so users can delve further into certain practical and theoretical aspects of MS/ Citrix XP. The author is short and consise when he needs to be (excellent top 10 lists about issues that are covered at the end of many chapters), and takes a more elaborate approach when necessary (such as when describing the loopback processing mode and possible licensing issues). IMHO two things can be improved: All in all, this is a wonderful book. Technically accurate, easy to read, and serves as a good reference. Summary: MetaFrame XP Great book on little known facts concerning MetaFrame that I could not find in other books out there. Great information on the Program Neighborhood Agent and NFuse. This book even talks about Extranet. A must for people who administer MetaFrame servers or consult on Citrix products. . .I use it as a reference guide. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Just not enough to pass the test I've used a number of this Series of Books to pass my MCSE tests and CCNA, but this book just didn't cut it. I estimate that it was missing 30 percent of the questions asked on the test. I don't expect the book to cover everything possible for the test, but 70% of the information was completely unacceptable. Summary: Book is good reference, but useless to pass exam I totally share my thoughts with the previous critics. I also miss the exam for 1 question. The test is quite bad, as on a few questions, I was wondering if I was taking the right test... This book is not a "cram" book. To my knowledge, there is no such thing out there for now... If you take the test, be ready to apply your pure logic and deduction to it. The book will not give you the answers. Summary: Average IT book, unfortunately. I just sat for this exam -- my 28th IT exam, and the second one I prepped for with a sybex book (the other being CCDA). Having seen past reviews, I decided to keep track of the amount of questions on my test that weren't covered in the book at all. There were nine, on a 40 question exam. In my opinion, that's pretty bad. Luckily I had run through a number of boson practice exams that covered the missing information. A number of practice questions on the CD focus around 'What tab will you find this on..' and interface navigation. This is silly, and I was pleased to not find these types of questions on the real exam. However, this only serves to lower my opinion of the CD. I'd probably try and find a different resource for this exam. Actually, I *did* try to, but this was a weekend project and I couldn't find anything else in stock. Believe me, I read the book, I remember every detail in it. It's incomplete. Anyone who could give this book 5 stars is not well exposed to good IT documentation or certification efforts. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Mainly fluff here I was very disappointed in this book, as there really isn't much detail. The entire book basically walks you through installing MPS and ICA Clients WITH THE DEFAULT SETTINGS!!! In short, it is mainly just screenshot after screenshot of default settings and "Click Next to Continue". Even the chapter on "Configuring Policies" is mainly just screenshots with some text below each one repeating what is displayed in the screen capture. Definitely not worth the price; spend your money elsewhere. Also, one of the 5 star reviews is by ONE OF THE AUTHORS (and I would bet that the other is a friend of one of the authors) therefore that is the reason the the number of stars is as high as it is. Summary: Lots of fluff This was not what I expected. So far I have read 400 pages and have not gained very much. There is a lot of procedures on how to install each component. Do we really need screen shots of every license agreement? Lots of filler here... If you're looking for something with technical detail, then look for a different book. Was not worth the money. Summary: Excellent Citrix Metaframe PS 3.0 Deployment book This book provides an excellent source for deploying MFPS 3.0. It covers all the basics required for a successful deployment including: new Win 2003 TS features, scaling, migrations, client devices, client deployment, secured connectivity and secured environments. As a veteran of Citrix since WinFrame, I can honestly say that this book will prove useful for all skill levels. Summary: |
