Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: Mediocre explanations, poorly proofread. If you're searching for a CCNA study guide, I'd advise looking elsewhere. While reading, I've noticed many typographical errors, poor editing, and in one case, an entire paragraph repeated for no apparent reason... and I'm only up to chapter five. Many of the explanations are difficult to understand at best. I frequently find myself searching other resources while trying to make sense of the incomplete and often confusing material. If you must get this guide, wait for the sixth edition. Hopefully, it will have gone through a more thorough proofing process. Summary: Sqeaked by with an 850 I used this book solely to study for the CCNA (2nd attempt). By the time I finished this book, I was able to master the practice tests on the enclosed CD. I found the actual CCNA questions to be much harder than the Sybex practice quetions. My coworkers used the Cisco Press books and passed easily. Todd Lammle's book is a great resource for learning subnetting; which is crucial to success on the CCNA. I would recommend the book for CCNA prep, but not as a sole resource. Summary: Good Book If you want to quickly understand Cisco networks this is a must read. I read the book twice over in one month and it basically gives you a sound knowlege of Cisco stuff. The labs are execellent. Gives you good CLI knowlege. The book helps demystify subnetting I can do it quickly now..very important in an exam scenario where you dont have time..I also liked the Frame Relay section Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Good beginning to C++ This was the book that was used for a C++ class I took this summer. It is a good book, and made some of the more complex aspects of C++ easier to understand. The examples are clear and illustrate the points of the book well. The material is presented in a clear and logical manner. Summary: Absolutely the best programming Text book!!! Makes an Amazing Refrence source I'm Currently using this book to teach myself programming early on as I just started College, and wanted to get a head start. I did an extensive search at an attempt find a solid series of text books that would prove suitable for my career programming needs now and in the future. The Deitel & Associates series text books not only did that...but went up and over the bar! This text proved to be very comprehensive, fun, and Rich in illustrations and diagrams. C++ How to program contains and utilizes: -Clear and concise writing stressing program clarity, extremely well structured paragraphs and main ideas -Cyber Class Room Access Card (new), grants access to your entire text online with features like Quizzes, Highliting, labs, and many more features! -Live Code Approach, an ingenious method of teaching that uses programming languages to teach programming languages -CDROM that includes the source code for all of the books examples and links to free compilers, tools, resources and much more!! -Option to suscribe to the deitel Newsletter and access to valuable info on thier Website. This is only the tip of the iceburg ladies and gents. This book has cemented the principles of programming and helped me build my foundation for my career. An Absolute must for any beginner!! Summary: Perhaps The Single Best Teaching Book Ever Written I can't say enough about C++ How To Program 5th Edition. The book is one of the best, comprehensive, foundational C++ books around - if not the best. The programming examples are exciting, fun, and practical. Along the way you learn so much about the principles of good programming while getting a solid foundation in C++. The excercises are challenging in a fun way. They make you think and you begin to get an understanding of what programming is like in the real world. The book carefully explains everything. I am amazed that in the beginning it assumes that the only thing you know is how to turn the computer on. By the end of this text, you will have a thorough foundational knowledge in C++. I stronly recommend that you get this book if you are new to C++ and especially if you don't have a programming background. I recommend that you pace yourself and try to do at least 20 to 40 pages a day, choose 5 of the excercises (which are provided in copious amounts), and type (not cut and paste) all of the code within the chapter. I came to C++ with no knowledge of it and no programming background. Now, I have a strong foundation in it thanks to this book. Again, if you want to learn C++ and you have no experience, buy this book! Once you are finished, then you can move on to your specific IDE (i.e. Visual C++, etc...). Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: You need to know the target audience I believe this book is targeted at new programmers or programmers who have no experience with VB language. I have read the previous edition cover to cover. I have to say this book does a good job of bringing your (VB) programming skills to a level that is just below commercial level. That is to say, despite the sheer volume, it does not teach you everything about VB.NET, many major advanced concepts are glossed over. For example, what is exactly the difference between a module and a class?(not explained clearly) Why are why namespace names seems to be hierachial?(glossed over) What's a inner class(Not included)? Why do we need structures? Why can't we just use classes for everything(Not included)? What I'm saying is, despite this being a very good book to bring you to an intermediate level, it's not an advanced VB book. I still recommend this book if you have no VB.Net experience and the "Visual Basic. Net 2005, the language" seems to complement this book well, as that book incudes advanced topics. Summary: The Very Best Visual Basic Book ........Period! Just when I thought their second edition was the best, the Deitels have certainly outdone themselves once again. This book flat rocks. This book contains so much useful information it is unbelievable. They have also improved the font as some have complained in the past in regards to this (which shows the Deitels listen to their customers) Great job once again. One reviewer had it right. Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Disappointing and frustrating For the last 3 years I would have sworn by Todd Lammle's CCNA Study Guides; mainly do to his free-hearted writing style that seem to add an element of humor to complex reads. However, this book has far too many errors and lacked technical intensity. In the past, I used Todd's 607 Study Guide to pass the archived 607 exam on the first try. Two and half years later, I purchased the 801 Study Guide with the same enthusiasm. After reading this book twice, taking all 8 bonus exams repeatedly, and exhausting the capabilities of the simulation software, I took the comprehensive 801 exam this weekend and did not pass! My exam had multiple questions that were not covered in Lammle's book. Not to mention the lack of coverage of NAT, that seems to magically show up on my exam. None of which was covered with enough detail within this book. Moreover, the Virtual Lab was not exhaustive and far too basic (No OSPF, EIGRP or NAT simulation capabilities). In my opinion, this is not acceptable. Especially when I was faced with these topics through out my exam. I wish this book did a better job of pinpointing the areas that were and would be crucial on the exam. Although Todd Lammle attempted to do place emphasis on certain points, none of those points showed up on test day. Obviously, Cisco has made the exam harder to achieve by reading materials alone (even there own text). Therefore, accurate and thought-provoking supplemental materials are a must!!The bonus questions simply repeat themselves over-and-over again. The book as a whole lacked coverage on crucial technologies and is filled with confusing statements and answers that turn out to be mistakes- Go figure! All of which, led me to give this book 3 stars (maybe closer to 2 1/2). Summary: big disapointment.... Mr. Lammle is still an excellent teacher/writer (the best), but the omission of some crucial material is a setup for test disaster. In particular there is little information on NAT, and zero configuration examples. 4 months ago I recertified on the CCNA and one of the simulation questions was NAT configuration and at least 3 multiple choice were on NAT router commands. I am now tutoring 4 other engineers using this book and we've had to use Cisco Press books to cover NAT and other material that is missing. The Simulator in this book will not do OSPF and EIGRP (both crucial, so we bought Mr. Lammle's routersim from www.routersim.com, this does allow these routing protocols, but VTP doesn't work correctly with the simulator switches. In hindsight I would definitely use Cisco Press now, it doesn't appear that Sybex is keeping up. The Cisco books aren't as well written or real world, but they have everything you need to pass the test. Summary: Well written, Full coverage of all topics except NAT/PAT The author has done a good job in writing the book, which provides detailed explanation of all the topics covered in the exam except for NAT/PAT, which is an important objective of the CCNA exam and you can hardly find one CCNA exam that doesn't test your knowledge in that area. More enhancements on how OSPF works is needed, since it's not covered clearly in the book. Other than that the book is enough to pass the test except for the points I discussed previously. One more thing, the bounce exams found in the study tools CD are very workable, never skip them you may encounter the same questions in the exam. I did! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Excellent Textbook This was my college text for an intro level class within my information systems major at the University of Texas at Tyler. While I was first a bit worried over the sheer size of the book I soon came to love it. Pros: +The book includes amongst it's numerous examples many complete programs. Meaning that when I wanted to see how something worked I could enter the example and it would compile properly. Most of the other programing textbooks I've experienced include only bits and pieces in their examples. +The book was able to answer every question I had on C. +The index was extremely well constructed. Cons: -Size may be an issue. If you already resemble a packhorse moving from classroom to classroom this book may not be for you. -If your looking for a concise intro to C where the goal is entirely to learn the 'how' and not also the 'why' this book isn't for you. The Deitel philosophy seems to be to list every possible detail concerning C and how to use it, order it based on how necessary it is, and then beat it to death. Hopefully this gives you a good idea of what the text is like. The four-star rating is given to "C How to Program" as a textbook. Were I thinking of it as a teach-yourself-C book I would probably rate it 3star simply because the amount of info (and the relativly high cost) is above what the hobbiest needs. Summary: Not as good as some may suggest... This book is too dense, basicly all you are getting is one third of the book on the subject. However, the explanation is well written and clear, but it follows few chapters after given example code. In each chapter very much is covered in very short lessons, the author felt like he had to put two other languages in the same book c++ and java. Pros : Good explaination. Cons : Covers very much in each lesson. Summary: Very Good Book on C (Emphasis on Beginners) This book is used in FSU's CGS 3408 course: "Introduction to Programming with the C Language." In the preface, the Deitels state that this book is for everyone (beginners to experts) who want to learn C. They've made a very good stab at that goal, but realistically, I'd have to say that those who are professional programmers in other languages will find this book too long for their needs. For beginners (and even those moderately versed in other languages), this is an excellent book. I really have only three minor gripes about it: - First, throughout the C portion, the book uses scanf as the default for getting user input. Unfortunately, as my compiler warned me constantly (and I verified on the web), scanf has been "deprecated" (I guess that's a fancy way to say don't use it, use something else). Unfortunately, the book talks about alternative IO in only one chapter near the end of the C portion and very rarely uses it. So, this book teaches as a standard an input method that's been superseded. - Second, and related to the first, the book clumps all IO except for printf and scanf into a single chapter near the end. It would have been a lot better if they had introduced alternative IO a little at a time throughout the book. As it is, my eyes just glazed over when I hit that chapter. - And, finally, though this might sound weird, there are too many exercises at the end of each chapter. I read through this book on my own and so had no way of choosing which exercises to do. Some of the chapters have over 40 programming exercises. I suppose this is great at a college where the instructors can select different exercises for years without repeating. But, as an individual, I'd have preferred a handful of in-depth exercises focusing on the chapter material instead of a huge number of varied exercises (some of which don't seem to have much bearing on the chapter). One note about the content of this book: most of it (over half) is dedicated to C. It covers C in detail. The remaining half is equally divided between C++ and Java. The level of detail in those chapters (and the exercises, too) comes nowhere near that in the C portion. If you're interested in C++ or Java, those chunks in this book are good, but you'll really need to read dedicated books to get the full treatment. Overall, a very good book. Experienced programmers might prefer something more terse, but all others will be pleased. I give it 4 stars out of 5. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Solid foundations for C# 2005 programming Using this book, with the MS Visual Studio .NET 2005 version, the MS Visual C# 2005 version, and the MS SQL Server 2005 version, one can learn a lot with the new platform. The codings are very much the same as the 2003 version. It is not too difficult for any one who has done C, C++, Java, or Visual BASIC programming. The exercises are very good and have been tested in corporate training sites. I am currently using an older version of this book, for a training class with 14 electrical engineers. Four people are using this book. They are happy with the book, exercises and the software. They are working on their final projects now. The book will be better if more server side applications are covered. More discussion on the differences between Java and C# will be useful for developers. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: 4th edition doesn't cut it I ordered the 4th edition, because it was cheaper. I've never seen the 5th edition though. In the 4th edition, they spend too much time talking about 1900 series routers, Pre IOS Version 12 and Pre Y2K stuff. When I studied for the CCNA exam, this book was only 10% useful. It's an OK reference book if you don't have anything else though. Summary: Great Book This is the 1 and only source I used to study for the exam and I passed it on my first attempt scoring just over 900. I found nothing in the book that ran counter to my experience and found it to be thorough and detailed. I did however have 2 years of working with Cisco Routers/Switches behind me before I began studying, so my learning curve was nowhere near that of someone trying to get a "Book Cert" with no hands on experience. Summary: Get the "5th" Edition, not the "4th" edition... I just was looking through the books and noticed that this it the 4th edition. The 5th edition has the latest info, and Sybex finally has updates on the web site. Great concept for continually changing tests.... Summary: |
