Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Good for the beginner or intermediate digital photographer Complete Digital Photography offers a lot for it's intended audience, entry through intermediate level digital photography experience. If you have not owned a digital camera, or your experience is limited to the more simple point and shoot cameras, and would like to understand enough to make an informed decision on a new digital camera you will find the information here to make a decision on the type of digital camera that will meet your needs and budget. Once you own your digital camera Complete Digital Photography can serve as a thorough guide in how to shoot and edit your photos. This is not a camera specific manual. Combined with the manual that comes with your camera Complete Digital Photography will guide you through the issues and opportunities you will face when capturing images allowing you to get more out of what ever camera you have. Complete Digital Photography also provides a guide to the selection and use of editing software, or the "digital darkroom". One of the most intriguing aspects of digital photography is the opportunity to get creative after you take the picture in a way that was just not possible for most shooters with film. there are many inexpensive, and expensive, digital editing programs available that anyone with a basic PC can take advantage of, Complete Digital Photography takes you through the options and provides a good overview of how to make your shots yours. The included cd includes trial versions of many of the applications referenced in the book as well as sample files for the examples used in the book. Someone with experience with digital SLRs and Photoshop will likely find this book a waste of time and will be looking for more specialised books that dig deeper into specific areas. For the vast majority of readers Complete Digital Photography will provide an interesting and thorough overview of digital photography. Summary: Great advice. If your a newbie to photo, as I am, you will find this a very informative book for your new walk in picture taking and it also covers some useful basics with photoshop. It's worth your time to check it out. Summary: Very comprehensive manual I found this to provide a wealth of information on the digital photo revolution as well as providing an exhaustive treatment of processing after the photograph.I learned a lot and am still learning a lot. I downgraded the manual 1 star because of the reliance on the use of Photoshop which I don't have even though sample software is included with the book. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: An essential book If you understand RAW processing (that takes a minute or two in the Adobe RAW converter), you will save yourself minutes to hours of laborious and often barely successful fixup in Photoshop. Read Real World Photoshop CS2, this book and Katrin Eismann's Photoshop Masking and Compositing and you will need little more. Summary: Not enough content The book is just too thin. The described technics do work, but are mostly a description of the buttons and therefore trivial. If you need one Photoshop book buy that of Martin Evening. Summary: Real World Raw This book is for real. It doesn't talk down to you or make unreal promises. It just provides the facts, and you can understand them. Raw IS the only way to shoot, you might as well know what you are doing, and how to do it better. tom vollick Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Wonderful Exposure Primer for Creative Photographers This is a book that every serious photographer should own--both for information and inspiration. I've had a copy of the original version of this book (1990) in my office since it was first published and it's worn to a frazzle. That's why I'm so thrilled that it has not only stayed in print this long, but also that Peterson has updated it. The first thing you'll notice when you read through this book is that Bryan Peterson is not just good at explaining the intricacies of good exposure in almost every conceivable situation (landscapes, close ups, portraits), but he is a world-class photographer. It's one thing to talk about manipulating depth of field or subject motion in theoretical terms, it's quite another to see the concepts demonstrated in masterful, creative and fun photographs. And the photos are so well chosen and so well done that even if the book was written in a language I didn't understand, I would get the points being made. His editors should be proud of that too. Getting good exposure is at the heart of making a good photograph. And you would think that with the auto-exposure systems built into both film and digital cameras that getting a good exposure would be a piece of cake. But as Peterson points out (and illustrates so nicely) there is a world of difference between getting a "good" exposure and getting the ideal "creative" exposure. Getting the ideal creative exposure requires careful consideration of how that exposure will affect things like depth of field, freezing or exaggerating motion, the color and quality of light and how your subject is presented. This book is not just about exposure, of course, but is a great source of information on various types of lighting, close-up photography, portraits, night photography, using a tripod and, most importantly, seeing creatively. I can't imagine making a serious study of photography and not having this book (and Peterson's classic book on "Seeing Creatively") nearby. Peterson is a gifted, funny and immensely talented teacher and photographer--more than willing to share all of his knowledge. As the author of many how-to books on photography myself, I have used Peterson's books as a constant source of information and ideas and I check my own facts against his regularly--I couldn't pay him a much higher compliment. As a photographer, I find myself looking at his pictures with great admiration and envy. His photographs are great. And by the way, "No!" I don't even know Bryan--except through his great books. Jeff Wignall Author, The Joy of Digital Photography thejoyofdigital@optonline.net Summary: My most usefull book I think that this book is the most exellent piece of paper i have read about photography. Ok i know that the book is not usefull for profesional photographers that they know what they do all time about the right exposure. But is this book for profesionals? I don't think so. For the rest of us (the serious amateurs users) the author keeps things simple but also goes in depth in the right points. He use only the camera's light meter for right exposure and for me this is the major advandage of the book. His tips and tricks are really useful and they had helped me to improve my photos. thalis http://www.flickr.com/photos/thalis Summary: Looking at the whole picture This is one of the very best photography books I have read. First Mr. Peterson explains basic things in a clear, easily understood way and uses effective illustrations to enhance his explanations. Second, He explains one element at a time and then shows you where that element fits into a greater whole. I found that I was already using much of what he covered, but when he explained how the different pieces fits together and how you can vary their relationships to one another to affect the end product; my separate pieces began to lock into place with one another and gave me a more powerful tool to work with. Once I began to grasp the larger view of exposure, I could see the variety of ways that a picture could be viewed and found I now understood what was technically necessary to capture the particular view that I wanted. Mr. Peterson defined what correct exposure is, and how you can know when you have it. He then explained that the correct exposure could be gained with several different combinations of aperatures and shutter speeds, and that the specific combinations were what allowed us creative exposures. Creative exposures change what the picture emphasizes. Exposures that were easy and pleasant to look at, but focused on motion rather than detail. Exposures that were in focus from the flowers at your feet to the castle at the foot of the mountains on the horizon, telling the story of the connection between that castle and the valley between it and the flowers close at hand. Exposures that emphasize shape with strong shadows, or that open up the shadows to reveal the details that would otherwise be hidden. He goes further, too, to explain about metering--the hows and whys--and about using exposure compensation. Again, these were things I was already doing; but doing by the seat of my pants rather than out of knowledge and intentional planning. I came away from this book feeling like I had been handed a whole new box of tools along with the skills to use them, a new way to look at and plan for the shots I was taking, and a restless urge to take my camera out and bring home the images that reflect how I see the things I am looking at. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: This is a 5 star book as long as you know what you're buying! I read the reviews of this book from other members. And they hovered around the, "this book is a rehash of what you already know" or, "a wordy version of the owner's manual." Maybe so, and this is precisely why I have to give this book 5 stars. I had a very nice 35mm SLR about 20 years ago (I'm 37 as of this review). I long since sold it and have not held anything other than some form of point-and-shoot for nearly two decades. But now I am getting back into photography again. I did a LOT of research and ended up on the EOS 20D. After reading the instruction manual that came with the book I realized I had more questions than answers. The instruction manual reads as though you already know everything it's mentioning. It's a large reference guide, but hardly a well-written instruction book for the EOS 20D. So, despite the reviews, I bought the book. And am VERY happy I did. I suspect the negative reviews are written by people who didn't really need to read this book in the first place. But if you're like me, and you're fairly green to all of this and are a virgin to the digial SLR world, then this book is a must for you if you have a 20D. The book is NOT an instruction book on how to take better photos. But it explains in very plain English how every single feature works, what it might be used for, and in a few cases, how to utilize some of the camera's features. I personally found this book to be invaluable. And without it I would have remained lost. Trying to decipher the hard-to-read instruction booklet that comes with the camera. After reading the book front to back I was confident in adjusting the camera's settings, using the 20D's onboard menus and screen-controlled settings. The book is written as though you're completely new to the 20D. And in the case of some professionals I can see how this almost might be condescending. But if you use the book for it's intended purpose (a more easily understood instruction manual) instead of what it isn't (How to get the best results from your 20D) then you'll be happy with the book. Hope this helps. I see 1-star bashes about this book and I am left to assume it's from people who never needed to read it in the first place. Summary: a better manual for the 20D a better in depth guide for the Canon 20D with a lot of tips. Summary: User-friendly adjunct to owner's manual It's somewhat basic, but helpful. Puts lots of information (including much that's in the owner's manual) in a context that's meaningful to users. The owner's manual describes how to operate the camera; this book provides additional context that makes the owner's manual more meaningful. The book is compact enough to put in the bag with the camera so that you can review it wherever you want. I'd recommend it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: What do You Get for the Extra Money? The Cadillac's of the digital camera world are the Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras. Here is where the camera companies put forth their latest research, the latest components in sensing, image processing and everything else. For the average advanced amateur, the question has to be, what will I get with a dSLR that makes it worth the extra huyndreds of dollars? This book answers that question. It covers the design of the dSLR camera and uses this to explain the advantages. It will enable you to decide if you need to spend the extra money or if it would suit you just as well to have a high end point and shoot camera. As you might guess, the author is a solid fan of dSLRs, but he is kind enough to point out that they may not be for everyone. He gives the advantages and some of the disadvantages of both the dSLR and what you can expect out of point and shoot. One point he doesn't mention, the features that you now get in a dSLR such as increased pixel count will move their way downward into the cheaper cameras as time goes on. Of course by then, the dSLRs will have a bevy of new features. Finally, to round out the story of dSLRs he does cover image processing and printing. Again, he concentrates on the unique features that dSLRs bring such as RAW files, etc. Summary: Comprehensive Guide to D-SLRs in Friendly Style You can always count on Dummies books to present complicated information in an easy-to-absorb style, and this one is even better than most. New D-SLR owners will find everything they need to know to master their cameras. Veterans will discover new features and new techniques, too. All the illustrations are in full color, so you can see exactly what kind of results you'll get if you follow this book's advice. There seem to be a lot of D-SLR books on the market now. Many of them concentrate on the technology or spend too much time describing how to "fix" your pictures in Photoshop. This book has exactly the right mix of nuts and bolts, tips on what you can do with image editing, and, throughout the text, lots and lots of photographic techniques of the sort you really won't find in many of the other D-SLR books. Summary: An instant classic for digital SLR owners The Dummies people have finally recognized that books about digital photography deserve to be published in full color, and this one amply demonstrates the reason why. It's written by the leading author of DSLR books (I also own his Nikon D70 guide), and is filled from cover to cover with wonderful full color photos and shrewd advice for getting the most from your camera. If anything, this book is even clearer than the usual Dummies book, taking you through every step in choosing, using, and accessorizing your digital SLR. It's perfect for new DSLR owners who are puzzled by the many options, features, and settings found in these cameras. It's also a good guide for those seeking to improve their skills. I now fully understand things like continuous autofocus and single autofocus, how to select lenses, when to use aperture and shutter priority, and why I should not ever use my D70's full "automatic" mode. Unlike some other DSLR books I've seen, this one covers both cameras and photography thoroughly, so you'll learn how to use your camera as well as how to take better images. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Useful, beautifully, and worth every penny! Picking up this book, the first thing you notice is how great is looks. It's printed in full color, with screen shots on nearly every page. I started the book expecting to jump right in to using iPhoto, but found that the entire first section of the book covers buying the right digital camera and a a guide to taking great looking pictures. I skimmed this section rather quickly as I already owned a camera and understand the basics of lighting and composing pictures. What I did read looked very useful for someone getting into photography for the first time. The second section covers using iPhoto to organize and edit your digital pics. I was surprised how many handy ways iPhoto 5 has to organize and find pictures easily. The chapter on editing demystifies all the controls and sliders in iPhoto's editing mode. Perhaps the best tip though is the advice to use the enhance button quickly and automatically adjust photos suffering from the affects of being taken in sub-optimal conditions. Section three details the many ways to share your photos with others. This falls primarily into 2 categories: printing and electronic distribution. These chapters have great tips for getting high quality prints wether you use your own printer or send your photos to a third party printing service. The section on electronic distribution shows you how easy it is to create a DVD you can send to friends and family; a format that even grandma will understand how to view. If you want to post your pictures on the Internet there are lots of useful tips on optimizing your photos for on-line viewing. The last section covers advanced uses. One of the most valuable explains how to get all those spontaneous photos off of you camera phone an into iTunes. And if you take a lot of photos; more than iPhoto can handle easily, the authors explain techniques for managing multiple iPhoto libraries. Summary: iPhoto 5 The Missing Manual is a great guide to getting the most out of iPhoto. In addition to covering iPhoto's many non-obvious features, the book includes a guide to buying the right digital camera, and techniques for taking the best quality pictures in many conditions. Best of all the book is beautifully illustrated in full color. iPhoto 5 The Missing Manual is well worth the $30 cover price ($20 on Amazon). Summary: Two Books in One! Some people may argue that iPhoto is a simple enough application that it doesn't require a 388-page user guide. But one peek into David Pogue and Derrick Story's latest, full colour edition of their Missing Manual will reveal that this is an extremely informative and useful book. "iPhoto 5 : The Missing Manual" is divided into four main parts: 1. "Digital Cameras" covers the basics of digital photography, everything from selecting and buying a digital camera to how to take great photographs. This includes detailed lessons on how to achieve the best results in the many different types of photography, e.g. action, portrait, nighttime, etc. 2. "iPhoto Basics" describes all the features of iPhoto 5: transferring photos from your camera to your Mac, setting up albums and managing and editing your photos, e.g. removing scratches and red-eye, adjusting exposure and balancing colour. 3. "Meet Your Public" discusses ways you can showcase your photos to the world: via slideshows, QuickTime movies, burning to DVDs, making prints, publishing on the web and printing photo books. 4. "iPhoto Stunts" delves into the more advanced features of iPhoto 5 like making screensavers, using AppleScript and managing your photo libraries. This is more than just a book for iPhoto. The first part alone is like a separate manual on digital photography. And the colour images truly enhance this edition. All in all, a very useful book to have for the aspiring photographer who wants to make the best of iPhoto as well as improve his or her photographic skills. Summary: POGUE DOES IT AGAIN! I DIDN'T FIND ONE OR TWO ANSWERS TO PATICULAR PUZZLEMENTS. BUT JUST IN BROWSING I DISCOVERED VALUABLE TIPS AND POINTERS THAT MORE THAN JUSTIFY THE PURCHASE PRICE. POGUE SHOULD BE WRITING TECH MANUALS FOR NASA. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: "Best in Class" book for Digital Asset Management Where was this book 4 years ago when I made the transition from film to digital? If this book would have been available back in 2001 I would have saved hundreds of hours (maybe more) of work trying to come up with this material myself ... and I never did quite get there. This book is very well written. It is clear, but it does not dumb down the discussion. The fundamental principles are well explained, and are then followed up by the nuts and bolts details. It is deep but accessible at the same time. The book covers all aspects of asset management, from the h/w configurations, setting up file structures, to cateloging and keywording. Peter Krogh's approach is very holistic, and he shows how all these aspects interplay. And while the technologies of digital storage and cateloging will change in the future, the principles being advocated by Peter have been thought out to be future proof, and should scale appropriately. This book is highly recommended for both professional photographers as well as amateurs. Or anyone who has images piling up on hard drives or DVD's and is not quite sure what to do with them. Do yourself a favour and spend a few hours with this book. It will more than pay for itself. Summary: A Must Read For All Serious Photographers Peter has successfully put together a clear, concise, most useable digital asset management "how to" that is required reading for all photographers. Peter's presentation of all areas of DAM is as good as it gets in conveying broad concepts and specifically implementing those concepts in the real world of managing digital media. Thank you Peter for a job well done! Summary: Essential Companion for the Complex DAM Journey I am an avid reader of anything that will help me understand the technical issues that confront me managing a shoot or post-shoot workflow. I take instruction manuals on trips to be studied on the plane. It is more than just confidence that one gains from a thorough understanding of the parameters. One gains creative control and up-front insight knowing what the back end may look like...like knowledge of the zone system for b&w shooters. That said, I want you to know that I find every aspect of your book useful. It is informative, logical and full of examples and options and ideas...enough to form a strong basis for the development of one's own workable DAM system. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent read and resource In transitioning from film to digital, I needed some books for a quick transition and to avoid reinventing the wheel. I don't have a lot of time, so a focused and detailed reference that could rapidly take me to a functional level was needed. I was very happy with the accessibility and the level of detail presented. I read the whole thing, but realize that I will need to go back to it to get the full value from it (e.g., when I find the need for a particular technique or action). It does address workflow, but that is not its focus, which I would describe as more of a broad, but sufficiently detailed introduction to many issues and techniques available to the digital photographer. Summary: Not For the Digitally Timid I did not want another "How To" digitaly photography book. What I wanted was information anologous to studying computer informations systems at the bit level and I found it in Pro Digital Photographer's Handbook. All of the "why" questions are laid out in meticulous detail. A wonderous tool for those looking to move on beyond point and shoot barrier. Summary: Even more than I expected This book is significantly better than I thought it might be. Really good explanations of all parts of digital photography that someone with a new SLR needs to know. This book is above the level of describing depth of field, and the standard SLR questions. Only down side I have found is that the book is a bit Nikon focussed. Those of us with Canons would like a bit more for us! Summary: |
