Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Hilarity has ensued Not for everyone. If you are easily offended, cannot take anything tounge-in-cheek, aren't intelligent enough to pick up on sarcasm, than you probably wouldn't enjoy this book. If on the other hand you are cool, you will like it. I laughed out loud at something (sometimes two or three things) on every single page. This is a classic. Summary: Funny, funny stuff... Maddox' Alphabet of Manliness largely lacks the depth of his critical analysis of stupidity that is such a strong theme across his website articles (hehe sounds like testicles), but is still a great read - perfect for picking up when you're on the toilet, or trying to avoid working at the office. It's jam packed full of funny, but make sure you understand his type of humour before buying, as you may otherwise find it confronting. If you don't understand sarcasm, and can't see how much Maddox is attacking the patriarchal side of society, then this is not your style of book. I bought this book to support Maddox because I love the website so much, and this book is a great (but simple) tribute to the site. Summary: Maddox's Best Work The book is basically a collection of 26 'Maddox Style' essays (one for each letter of the alphabet). If you like his website (thebestpageintheuniverse.com), you're going to love the book. While perhaps somewhat subdued compared to his online ranting, these essays are funny and fresh and well worth the small price of this well constructed and well written book. Summary: |

A must read for anyone looking to improve their understanding of family, friends and others. Summary: Review of Audio CD I'm writing this review of the 5-CD audiobook, not the book. The CD is a must-have, whether you've read the book or not. In it, actual examples are acted out of all kinds of conversations before and after the techniques are used. After listening to the CD I can easily recall what to do when I find myself suddenly in a difficult conversation, because i've actually heard it. Also, as you move through the sessions, the authors go just a bit deeper and deeper until one finds oneself admitting some very personal truths. I think the reviewer below who recommends Dale Carnegie instead didn't hear the CDs -- I didn't get the same result from Dale's books, as I have from listening to these CDs. The ultimate result of having listened to the series a few times? I don't get thrown off balance (their term) so often when I suddenly realize the other person is reacting negatively to what I thought was positive, and vice versa. I just switch into a different mode and many times, the person (either me or my companion) has forgotten they were upset at all. Now for my complaints, which lost them a star: the CDs are extremely low budget. The packaging has no guide and the content within the CDs is not organized very professionally. There is no heading labeling each track, so if one has to stop listening one won't know where they left off. Also, sometimes a section that should be on its own track begins within a track, somewhere in the middle, so if you want to find where it begins, you have to go back and search for a while for the exact beginning of the idea. How they thought that was logical I don't know. And, they don't have a recording at the beginning of each CD so you know where you are, to help you in remembering so you can refer back to which CD has what you want. Finally, the voices used to herald new chapters/key points, are not consistent - so that it's easy to miss them as they go by, if you're doing something else at the same time. This is a major no-no in radio presentation, which I would have thought the experts at Harvard would be on top of. Summary: tools for your toolkit of life i recently spent almost $300 of my own hard-earned cash to buy this book from amazon and mail my friends their own copies. yep, it's that good. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Decent Read It's an extension from Relic, so you should read that book 1st. Some slow portions and several characters were not well developed, but still a good read. Summary: Deadly showdown between the brothers Pendergast Preston and Child in "The Book of the Dead" conclude their classic trilogy of the confrontation between Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast and his pathologically evil younger brother Diogenes. The novel commences very shortly after it's prequel, "The Dance of Death" concludes and therein lies the problem. Without having at least read "Dance of Death" you'd be lost just picking up "The Book of the Dead". Having myself read the prequel when it was first released, enough time elapsed to create a bit of fuzziness about the plot. Closely paralleling the Star Wars trilogy as to the relative dispositions of the forces of good and evil, we find our heroes back on their heels as in "The Empire Strikes Back". Agent Pendergast is incarcerated in an impregnable federal penitentiary implicated in a slew of crimes committed by his brother Diogenes, who had framed him. Pendergast's sidekick. NYPD Lt. Vincent D'Agosta had been disgraced as a result of his involvement with him and faces a departmental disciplinary hearing. He was forced to sever romantic ties with Cpt. Laura Hayward. The plot begins with a delivery of a suspicious package to, where else, The Museum of Natural History. Powder leaking from the package spawned fears of bioterrorism. Careful lab analysis concluded that the powder was a large amount of industrial diamond grit. Examination of this grit by the museum's mineralogy experts revealed that the grit was actually the pulverized remains of the museums priceless diamond collection which had been purloined by Diogenes. This revelation set into motion, by the directors of the museum, a huge project designed to distract the public from destruction of the precious stones. Former P & C heroine and museum curator Nora Kelly was assigned the job of re-opening the lavish Egyptian tomb of Senef, which had been bricked up in the bowels of the museum in the 1930's. The tomb which had been shrouded by rumors of a curse surrounding it was to be again opened amid a gala pageant funded by a ten million Euro bequest by a mysterious French count whose ancestors originally uncovered it. This all fell under a nefarious plan orchestrated by Diogenes to wreck havoc using the exhibit as his base of operations. In the meantime Lt. D'Agosta working with wheelchair bound genius Eli Glinn of Effective Engineering Solutions were plotting a scheme to spring Pendergast from prison. Pendergast made aware of events surrounding the museum and Diogenes' plan was anxious to break out to thwart his brother. The wily Diogenes however was taking no chances and was trying to seduce Constance Green, the young but ageless ward of Pendergast, who lived in his Riverside mansion, using her as a wedge against his brother. The plot thickens as the brothers attempt to fufill their goals. A major revelation in this book is the insight we get into the genesis of the conflict between the two brothers. A boyhood prank perpetrated by a nine year Agent Pendergast on his seven year old brother resulted in his partial blindness and twisted his psyche forever creating an insurmountable rift. Also revealed by P & C are some aspects of the story behind the mysterious Constance Green. Since the authors have indicated that "The Book of the Dead" concludes their trilogy, we can hopefully look forward to some fresh new plot fabrications. In the concluding scene of the book, seeds were planted for a possible direction their next eagerly anticipated novel will take. Summary: The expected gift from Preston/Child The Pendergast series is a delight. I wish each book to be unending, but alas, end they must, and I eagerly await the next. I thorouhgly enjoyed this offering. The ride of murder, mystery and logic is surely a treat. Don't pass it up! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Heroes exist even when surrounded by incompetence In reading Brinkley's book I found myself getting angry as I read each chapter. Many times I had to set the book down and come back to it better composed a few days later. How anyone can read this and re-elect the Mayor of New Orleans who did nothing to dispel rumors, exhibit any leadership or do anything other than be concerned for his own safety is beyond my comprehension. The NOPD did little to dispel any view that they were insensitive or disinterested. I am certain there were many fine police officers who never left their posts and worked to provide aid to the citizens even when faced with losing their own homes and belongings. Unfortunately their deeds are overshadowed in this work. In spite of the failings of FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security Secretary (Chertoff)heroes were abundant in this book. Everyday people took risks that the government wouldn't take to rescue fellow citizens and strangers alike. Rescuing in boats, delivering food and water, working in medical triage were just a few of the unspoken heroes. While this was a tragedy of epic proportion, fast action by regular folks kept more people from dying as a result of Katrina and the related floods. I hope that I never have to rely on FEMA or Homeland Security. Chertoff's aloof and detached approach to this situation is deplorable and unforgivable. The President didn't get it either. And when he did he failed to act decisively or timely. All I need to know about FEMA is shared in two passages. One group of first responder rescue teams was diverted to Atlanta for two days of diversity and sexual harrassment training prior to being allowed into New Orleans. Medical personnel (doctors) who arrived in New Orleans on their own (at their own expense) were ordered not to treat the sick and dying because they weren't properly credentialed by FEMA. Ever hear of good samaritan laws FEMA? I think if I need relief supplies, I'd rather count on Wal-Mart. Their logistics people had staged food and water outside the storm zone and reacted quickly to bring necessary supplies in to give away while FEMA still had truckloads of bagged ice being shipped around the country from never really finding a place to deliver it. And when it comes to emergency transportation, FEMA had contracted with Landstar for buses. Unfortunately Landstar is a freight company that owns no buses and they resorted to calling Carey Limousine to help them find buses. This was all happening while the National Bus Operators Organization offered buses and drivers (at no cost) to assist with evacuating the Superdome and Convention Center. This was an overwhelming tragedy. The State of Louisiana and its leadership did the best it could faced with huge challenges. No governor before had ever faced something of this magnitude and hopefully no one will again. Not enough was told about the incredible work of the Wildlife and Fisheries department and the US Coast Guard running thousands of rescue boat operations and helicopter flights. They too are heroes of Katrina. It will be years before the scars of Katrina are healed. Hopefully all the of agencies (state, federal and charitable)that usually work on these events will be better prepared and learn from the mistakes of Katrina's first seven days. Summary: Information you need to know about this Hurricane Emotional and gripping, chock full of the little known details that explain the politics behind the foundering of this majestic city. This book is huge, yet you will feel compelled to finish. Ive never enjoyed nonfiction so much. Summary: Comprehensive This is a staggering acheivement. Brinkley is able to summarize all kinds of data -- political, social, medical, economic -- and package it into a lively, compelling narrative. This will long be the book of record on America's greatest natural disaster. I visited New Orleans the week before Katrina. Four months later we moved there and bought a house to help in the rebuilding efforts. I struggle to communicate to people the extend of the devastation here. This book is the one indispensible guide. And this massive, heavy work remains utterly readable. Brinkley is a master of simple prose. Politics? There is something here for everyone. Liberals will appreciate Brinkley's subtle left-wing bias. Conservatives will appreciate the unavoidable conclusion that Katrina revealed the utter uselessness of gov't to help in such crises. Those who want to blame Nagin and local NOLA corrupt gov't are right. AND those who want to blame Blanco and Baton Rouge are right. AND those who want to blame Michael Brown, Bush, FEMA and Washington are right. The failure of all levels of gov't, Brinkley proves by example after example, was total and profound and stunning. Most readers will conclude that the gov't actually did slightly more harm than good in the early days of the flood. That the human loss was not even worse was the result of thousands of acts of heroism and rescue from churches, neighbors, and sometimes even corporations (like American Airlines, who evacuated plane loads before the first FEMA person stepped foot in the city). Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A pretty good intro book for calculus based physics I once taught a calculus based physics coursed using this text. I found as good as the other standard texts: Both the book by Serway and the book by Halliday and Resnick. The ideas are presented clearly, without too many words, and the examples are well picked. I suspect, as happened to me, that you will appreciate the calculus better after getting past a calculus based physics course. Despite containing a few errors, a good return on your investment relative to the cost of this text, is the supplementary Schaum's outline: Physics for Engineers and Science. Each chapter of this Schaum's reviews things concisely, and is filled with tons of worked out sample problems. Try hard to work out these problem sets first, before looking at the solutions. Your grades will reflect YOUR efforts. Sincerely, Alex Alaniz Ph.D. PS--I also think that the Resnick and Halliday text is great, and that the Feynam lectures are great, but not necessary for your success at this level. 1. Please see the reviews of my own strong science fiction book: Beyond Future Shock about the near-terms perils and promise of advanced bio/nano technology in a world still roiled with Middle Age religious conflict and ever growing extreme wealth gradients. 2. I have REVIEWED many books from undergraduate to graduate in: PHYSICS, MATH, ECONOMETRICS, and HISTORY among other areas. Summary: Clear and nice physics book for intro students I know physics is hard for all of us, but this book is very clear in explaining physics. It does not involve in calculus, so usually it is better for most students who never took physics. So if you did not take physics class before, I highly recommend this book because it does not use pompous or intricate words that most science textbook writers do. Not only is it an easy reading, but also it has awesome questions and problems that make you think and that check whether you know really physics. Most my friends who were in engineering or math majors had easy physics teachers in high school. Some of them did not even take physics at all. Surprisingly, they dived into calculus based physics book and they found the subject to be incredibly hard. I understand their pain because I think this book can be a bridge that can connect high school physics(so easy ones) and calculus based physics. I also read Serway's College Physics, and in my opinion, I think Giancoli wrote better job in explaining physics with more clear diagrams. The sentences that he uses grabs my attention. Serway confused me and I was stuck a lot from his book. Problems in examples are so much better in Giancoli as well and diagrams were better as well. So before you read calculus based physics, read this one thoroughly and you will be able to breathe in higher physics class. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Fairly good I have taught undergrad intro courses to physics using various editions of Giancoli's text. It is well written, and gets to the point concisely. Students find the examples useful, and the homework problems are well balanced. As always, though, I recommend that the student supplement this book with the Schaum's outline book of college physics. I recommend this Schaum's to supplement ALL/ANY intro college physics text, as it contains many worked out sample problems, which the student should try to solve before looking up the answer. Sincerely, Alex Alaniz Ph.D. Summary: A student's perspective As one reviewer stated before me, these books are the reason why people are afraid of physics. I have had the horrible misfortune of using this book during my senior year of high school...it is horrible...horrific...detestable...coarse to the mind. The most criminal error that I can point out is that this book does not have a GLOSSARY. A school textbook without a glossary? Give me a break. The text reads like a conversation. Apparently Giancoli didn't pay very much attention in English class. One should not write educational text the way he or she speaks. One should state facts in a way that clearly defines what needs to be said. The positively criminal lingo of the book goes on tangents constantly and really breaks up the progression of the information. Also, the author tends to call an element of a concept one thing, but substitute it with a variable that is totally different. It is clear that Giancoli assumed that everyone who was reading this book already knew physics vocabulary and was looking for a refresher course. Apparently Giancoli, the god of physics, could teach the experts more than they could ever dream. Throw me a bone here...his writing is crap. This book is being distributed to highschools and is also used at the university level. These are LEARNING stages. LEARNING. That's something that one can't do with this horrible book. It's criminal. Absolutely criminal. Physics isn't a scary thing, nor is it impossible. Don't let books like these scare you away from the subject. It's just a few selfish, cocky scientists that wish to exclude others. Giancoli, I hope your 6th edition was better...much better. Otherwise, schools will be wasting even more money on garbage. Summary: Informative Comprehensive and thorough. A must for anyone who needs an understanding of applying calculations to actions. I found this book to be even paced and very understandable. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Still a great reference I used this book for my highschool AP Physics class in 2001-2002. I just finished the Fall 2005 school semester as a mechanical engineering major, and I have to say that this is by far the most worn-out book I own. I still occasionally pull it out. I own three other textbooks in physics at this level, and I've seen many others; I think this is the most well-written book I've seen for this material. If your instructor doesn't require this book, and if you can find a cheap used copy, I'd recommend getting this to supplement your studies. The pictures and diagrams are great. The text is clear. The formulas are easy to follow. Yes, the problems are rough, but they force you to have a good foundation in calculus, which is absolutely necessary in later courses. Most physics books have similar problems anyway. This isn't the book to get if you need help in math, which is the #1 reason for physics difficulties these days. Summary: Physics Book I was pleased with the condition of the book and the ease that was required to buy the book. However I was disappointed with the mailing it took longer than expected, I paid extra for the speedy shipping yet it still took over 5 days to get here to Minneapolis. Summary: Physics Student This is a great book for Calculus base physics. It offer in-depth explaintion of the theory and how it derive a theory. The problem at the end of each chapter are challenging and encourge the student to work at it in able to solve it. Also, after doing these problem, it a guarantee that you will at least learn something. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Good introduction to an important subject This reviewer spent 10 years at Arizona State University and while there, took over 70 classes. As an engineer, I took loads of science and engineering classes; many of which I did not need. There was one class I took only because I had to; Design of Experiments, an industrial engineering graduate class taught by Dr. Douglas Montgomery. We used this book (an earlier edition though) in this class. The class was great and the book was actually quite easy to understand. Now, as an engineer at Intel, I have come to discover that this the class by Dr. Montgomery, and the book from that class, is more useful than any other class / textbook that I have ever taken. Since Dr. Montgomery cannot teach all of us about statistics within engineering design, we can instead read this highly readable book of his. Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK This is the best book for beginners to DOE, students and for future reference. Chapters 12 and 13 are useful for people interested on Gauge R&R studies (variance components models) and for those that have to understand and apply ISO/IEC 5725 standards at the laboratory. A lot of references are listed at the end of the book. Summary: Very Practical and Useful book This is one of the Best Works in DOE I have come across apart from the book Statistics for Experimenters by Box, Hunter and Hunter Summary: |
