Summary: Well meaning, but flawed and scary presentation of dyslexia
Some of the book was very interesting, especially the chapter on the functional MRI findings. I appreciate her writing the book to share her experiences, and think she truly wants to help. However, I admit I have grave doubts about her premise, because it is inherently contradictory. She repeats throughout the book that anyone who is dyslexic will always remain so, and yet is simultaneously convinced that the kind of intervention she recommends is uniformly effective. In addition, the graph on which she bases her claim about the absolute persistence of dyslexia does not justify her conclusions. The book names various intervention programs, but doesn't compare and contrast them. It is hard to tease out specific recommendations about what to do. She mentions that people vary in their reading stumbling blocks, but prescribes the same programs for all. She states that anyone using programs like Open Court should succeed, but thousands of California children still have trouble reading. Though she means the book to be empowering, I think it scares parents instead.
Summary: A Must Read!
This is a must read for not only spec. ed teachers but regular ed. teachers as well. Dr. Shaywitz is a dedicated individual that has really hit the nail on the head with reading instruction....no guess work here, scientifically based reading instruction for true success!

Summary: Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills
This book gives language teachers a great wealth of information regarding dyslexia and reading problems.
Summary: A parent's point of view
...this is a great book that I've searched for. It pulls tons of useful information about dyslexia into one spot. Only one warning I would send out to parents - this is a textbook not a "pop culture" book. I've found the reading slow going as I'm unfamiliar with many of terms and concepts as I'm not a linguist or teacher. Having said that, I belive I now understand how to help my daughter learn easier which will open many previously closed doors to her. The textbook is worth the effort!!
Summary: Goldmine of Theory and Practicality
In Multisensory Teaching of Basic Language Skills, Dr. Judith Birsh has succeeded in bringing together the expertise of a constellation of respected and well-known contributors to produce what will undoubtedly become a highly prized and much-used text/reference book in the field of dyslexia and learning differences. Calling on various authorities to write sections in their area(s) of greatest interest and strength, she has developed a greatly needed resource for understanding, teaching, assessing, and parenting those who have dyslexia and related disorders.

Beginning with the definition and characteristics of dyslexia, a discussion of the latest research in the field, and the need for all teachers to understand the structure of the English written code, the book gives the prospective reader an overview of the eighteen chapters by offering chapter summaries. Other aids for the reader include extensive references for each chapter; graphics and other illustrations; a glossary of key terms; and a most carefully organized appendix of materials and sources.

In an enlightening and forthright discussion of multisensory instruction, the authors of the first chapter address the issue of lack of research studies concerning the efficacy of multisensory teaching. They conclude, however, that there is theoretical support for this approach and that, until research is able to confirm or disprove the effectiveness of multisensory instruction, it behooves teachers to rely on their own experience and professional judgment, as well as on the professional judgment of others who, over the years, report student success when multisensory instruction is used.

The Chapter One discussion of multisensory methods provides the platform upon which the remainder of the book is built. Subsequent chapters proceed logically from the role of oral language to the importance of phonological/phonemic awareness and alphabetic knowledge in the teaching of accurate decoding and reading fluency. A most helpful treatise on the teaching of reading comprehension follows discussion of these vital elements of effective reading from a multisensory perspective.

Readers will also find instructive and well-written sections on such subjects as multisensory mathematics instruction; oral language; phonological awareness; spelling; handwriting (including the multisensory presentation of manuscript letter forms); organization and study skills; and several other subjects. In addition, chapters dealing with adult and high functioning dyslexics, parenting issues, and transition to the general classroom and content areas present materials of high interest and utility.

Instructors in university undergraduate and graduate classes will find this book to be an excellent choice as the text for reading disability courses. It is suggested that the editor and publisher consider developing an instructor's manual and, perhaps, a student guide as supplementary materials for this book.

Having just ordered five copies of this book for use in our university classes for training dyslexia specialists, this reviewer submits that those who deal with learning different individuals will find this book to be a goldmine of theory and practicality.

Summary: This really does Work!
I have read this book, and belive me, I did have to re-read some of the information over a few times before I fully understood what it was saying. This is due to my 'Gift of Dyslexia' and not anything on the part of the author. It IS the answer to many prayers. You need to read All of the book to understand why it works. Not only does it help explain why my father, sister and I are the way we are...it also has given me reference to a Certified Davis Learning Center that I sent my son to. Not only does it help, but everything really makes sense now. It is not easy and will take a lot of hard work and time, but the end result is great. I have a list of 40-50 parents that have used this program for this learning center that all have had sucess with it. I am giving this book to several people for christmas so they can understand our family better.

I've even finally come to terms with my caffeine addiction. For me, it's tougher to give up than nicotine. The headaches, the fatigue, the irritability...it's terrible! It finally dawned on me why I was so tired and had headaches on the weekends even when I got plenty of sleep. I realized I only made coffee during the week, and never drank it on the weekends! Duh!

One of my biggest goals is to have more children, so if I plan on having a successful conception and healthy pregnancy someday, I will have to quit. I did it with my first child, so I know it's possible. I even bought this book called "The Truth About Caffeine " which my doctor recommended.

I will implement a plan to gradually wean myself, since I don't care to relive the crippling migrane I had last Thanksgiving weekend when I tried to quit cold turkey. (get it, Thanksgiving turkey :P) Who's with me?

Summary: Finally, the answer to our problems!!!
First, should Mr. Davis ever read this, let me first extend my most sincere, heartfelt thanks for using your painful life experiences to help others. Thank God you were able to find a way to not only help yourself but were willing to pass that knowledge along!!

Second, if you are a teacher who thinks this book and/or program couldn't "possibly" apply to your students because, "They're not mirroring their writing" or "They're not showing reversals like a dyslexic would" you REALLY need to open your mind and read this book to realize that the least common (yet, unfortunately, most known) symptom of dyslexia comes in the form of reversals. If your phoenetic teaching doesn't seem to be working for extremely bright kids (or is working slowly but surely), PLEASE, for their sake, consider implementing this program!!

Finally, I swear that Mr. Davis wrote this book specifically for my 6 1/2 year old son. My son's IQ was tested in the superior range. He showed extremely early verbal capabilities and has frightened me with his intelligence many, many times. He is one of the smartest people I have ever known, but he can barely read to save his life! My step son, on the other hand, has Asperger's Syndrome - he has zero common sense, can barely carry a conversation, lacks independent thought, etc. - yet, he can pick up anything and sound it out to read it with about 85% accuracy (he just turned 6). Having both boys in my home has underlined my son's reading problems. He has an IEP and is is learning support for his reading and writing. Yet his LS teacher *still* claims my son can't be dyslexic b/c he barely reverses his letters. Ugh! Show my son the word "Man" and he'll say "Guy" - show him the word "boy" and he'll say "Kid". If that isn't a person thinking in pictures, I don't know what is!!

Anyway, we are going to participate with a Davis instructor this summer and I can hardly wait! The assessment showed my son is clearly an excellent candidate and she actually had him spelling his middle name (Alexander) backwards and forwards within five minutes (he couldn't even spell it nor would he try before she had him do it in clay). That showed me beyond any doubt that this program is the best thing to come along for our family and is definitely the answer to our problems when it comes to my extraordinarily bright child's inability to read.

Thanks again, Ronald Davis!! God bless you!!

If you are a parent, grandparent, caregiver, child care worker - anyone who has the opportunity to help a bright child who is struggling with reading - please consider purchasing this book to see if the reason YOUR bright child can't read is because of dyslexia (regardless of what the school says!). It certainly cannot hurt and might just be the key to open the door for them!

Summary: Outstanding
This book is well written. I would recomend this publication to anyone who has a Dyslexic family member or is Dyslexic themselves. It allows for greater understanding of The Gift and methods to unlock its assets.

Summary: Different Brains, Different Learners
A great book for teachers as well as parents. It helps to understand what is or may be happening in the brain. I like the recommendations given on ways we can help alleviate stressful events under given conditions.
Summary: Lacking
This book lacks the depth it seems to promise. Some of the illustrations are lacking. There is not enough meat to help anyone with special needs learners. I would suggest you look elsewhere. I was greatly disappointed since the majority of work by Jensen is wonderful.
Summary: Essential reading for all teachers
Eric Jensen knows the needs of busy teachers and has the gift in helping them to utilize up-to-date knowledge in brain studies. Here it is applied to identifying 10 types of different learners: 1. impulsive ones with ADD, 2. resigned with learned helplessness, 3. challenged reader with dyslexia, 4. argumentative with oppositional disorder, 5. frustrated with learning delayed, 6. hyperactive, 7. with auditory-processing deficits, 8. out of control, 9. the demotivated with chronic threat and distress, and 10. depressed and troubled.

You are given a pre-test and a post-test of 10 unique students to see if you can identify the patterns of symptoms rather than isolated behaviors. There are many color-prints of corresponding brain-images and graphic charts that facilitate learning. Brief summaries of treatment methods, supplementary resources on books, websites and organizations are given on each type. All teachers should acquire such general background knowledge so that the unqiue needs and gifts of students can be respected.

Summary: Good stuff, but way too self-congratulatory
Orfalea's insights into entrepreneurship -- admittedly quite valuable in places -- are marred by his constant refrains of "what a great idea I had." He even has co-workers featured in quotes praising the wonders of Paul. A bit tedious, at times.
Summary: A candid and motivating book!
Some success stories have become cliches in the world of business literature. How many times have we heard about FedEx? Ironically, this company now owns Kinko's. The story of how a poor student made a success with a series of copy shops has been told before. But this time we hear it from the real Kinko's. He got the name from his curly hair. After he sold the company, he got a haircut. Judging from the photos included, he probably should have kept the curls-and mustache. We get a frank telling of the author's struggles with what he calls "learning differences." One point he often makes is the need of educational reform. This honor student firmly agrees. His temper could be trying to family, friends, and employees. Seeing the problems with his family's businesses greatly influenced how he ran Kinko's. At this date I've never set foot in a Kinko's. There aren't that many in my area. But he makes it sound like a great place to work at. Much effort went into making the stores both customer and employee friendly. Some, but not all of that, got affected after he sold the company. I could have done without the gambling analogies. But many fit his points. Since retiring, he's devoted himself to teaching, other business ventures, and charitable work. It's an interesting book. Enjoy!
Summary: From one Hyperactive Dyslexic to another
Sometimes the best ideas are the simplest (why did not I think of that?... well you didn't... that's all). A simple idea. A simple narative. A little Prozac. It is a good mix. A very enjoyable read.

Summary: Must read for parents of dyslexic children
I strongly recommend this book to parents of dyslexic children and educators. I only wish that I had the information from this book when my son started school 13 years ago. Since this book is written by a professional with dyslexia who has experienced what our dyslexic children experience 24/7, it is more credible. As an educator, I will certainly recommend this book to parents of my dyslexic students!
Summary: A refreshingly candid look at living and succeeding with dyslexia.
I have to admit that when I first picked up this book, I was a little put off by the title. I thought maybe this was going to be another one of those books about the "mystique" of dyslexia. I was delighted to find a candid account of how dyslexia affects all aspects of a person's life. Dr Frank's honesty about his own struggles with dyslexia was refreshing. I had to laugh aloud when I read that "if this (dyslexia) is a gift, I'd send mine back." I have a dyslexic husband and son and am well aware of the day-to-day struggles they face with word recall, mental "blurriness," memory blocks, and the fear of embarrassment and failure. This is a wonderful book for those who live or work with dyslexic individuals; it allows you to see the world from their perspective. Dr Frank is honest about the challenges of dyslexia, but also highly encouraging. He gives practical strategies for forming your support team, compensating, and forging ahead despite the challenges and fears that dyslexic individuals face. This book is probably the most balanced that I have read about dyslexia.
Summary: The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child
This is without question the best book I have ever read regarding dyslexia. I have been researching and reading on the topic for 8 years and not one book has brought me to my knees like this one did.
Robert Frank writes from his heart. He opens the window into the lives of persons who struggle with dyslexia in a very personal, yet professional manner.
My 12 year old daughter is dyslexic. She attended public school through 5th grade - I took her out of school at the beginning of 6th and she is now homeschooled and thriving! What was incredibly sad was that she had been placed in a "special education" classroom with children who were cognitively challenged. There is such incredible misunderstanding of the dyslexic child.
This book offered me a true look into her "secret world" as well as tools to help. I have read various parts of the book to her and she responded with tremendous relief...someone put into words exactly how she "thinks".
This book is a gift to all parents and educators. It's also a gift to the children and adults who struggle with dyslexia.

Summary: Helping Your Dyslexic Child: A Step-By-Step Program for Help
Easy to read. The best part about this book is that it gives you actual exercises to do with your child to help them. For this reason alone I am going to purchase this book.
Summary: I felt that this book did not provide enough resources.
This book did not offer enough resouces for parents. It was also pessimistic in terms of the outcome for dyslexics. It was very helpful in terms of identifying characteristics that are not often associated with dyslexia, yet it still appeared to be very general in catergorizing these characteristics. One of the methods for teaching reading skills, however was very helpful but other methods should have been given as well.

Summary: Finding a way to balance unusual gifts with developmental delays
I am the mother of a beautiful 4 year old boy with hyperlexic autism. He learned the alphabet and taught himself to read before he was 2 years old. I was delighted to see that another mother of a hyperlexic child wrote this book explaining how to channel a child's natural gifts to learn about the world and remediate developmental delays. The author makes it clear that every child has a different learning style, so what worked for her son may not work for other hyperlexic children.

This book is perfect for a family with an established Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) program for their hyperlexic child at home or at school. To my knowledge most ABA programs ignore a hyperlexic child's desire to read (at one point my son was actually forbidden to read at preschool!), so this is a refreshing change of course to incorporate the child's interests into an early education plan. The book is filled with step-by-step outlines and terrific illustrations for early literacy and communication skills. At home we use play-based therapy, not behavioral methods, but my son loves the flash cards from the book and typing up stories with me.

I had some problems with this book. On page 26 the author mentions that her son's therapy was partially or mostly covered by insurance and implies that other insurance companies will do the same. This is not the case in the USA - some states do not even provide early intervention services through the school district, and many parents of autistic children have sold their houses or gone bankrupt to pay out-of-pocket for their child's therapy. I would love to move to the state of Washington and sign up for the author's insurance plan!

Another problem in the book is the absence of any discussion about the severe anxiety, phobias and panic attacks that are characteristic of hyperlexia. In fact the author even says that she allowed her son to scream and cry through several weeks of behavioral therapy before he learned to comply, never even addressing the issue of anxiety. For parents who are looking for a more humane approach to anxiety, I recommend "Your Anxious Child" by John Dacey and Lisa Fiore.

I have a personal issue with author's frequent negativity about autism, for example, saying that autism was "eating away" at her son and, "We must fight this," and even naming one chapter "Line of Attack." How can we accept a child unconditionally if we reject such a large part of his life? Remediation should be based on building relationships, not destroying behavior.

With that said, this book is a rarity: it balances the core deficits of autism with its remarkable gifts, and offers one way to harness these gifts to support the child's healthy development. After reading this book, I donated it to the parent-teacher resource library at my son's school.
Summary: Great work from a great lady
I am admittedly biased, having had the pleasure of knowing the author and her family for several years, but this important book is wonderfully assembled and very readable. It puts into plain language the difficulties of identifying autism/Asperberger Syndrome early enough to effectively treat it, and the absolute importance of early detection.
From Audra's example, we have learned to be proactive with our children's early development. In this regard, this book is more than a wealth of information on a growing problem affecting our society today, but also a call for action to parents of young children. I really think this book can help all parents and people who work with young children.
