Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great slice of a terrible period in time The writing, devlopment of characters with a backdrop of the worst period in history makes this novel informative and poignant. Knowing that Ms Nemirovsky was living during this time and had to end her book where she did because she was deported to Aushwitz where she died, makes this book feel more like a memoir than a novel. A must read for anyone who is interested in this period or for anyone who just likes to read a well crafted book Summary: Tyranny: Man's curse from hell Hitler, Pol Pot--mastermind of the Cambodian holocaust--Fidel Castro, and thousands of tyrants throughought history have three qualities in common: inborn hatred for humankind, delusions of grateness, and sadism.(Read my memoir; "Adios, Havana") These creatures of subhuman strain are cancers that eventually destroy the same societies that brought them to power. Though fictional, "Suite Francaise" vividly depicts the horrors these lunatics can inflict into their own brothers and sisters. Great book! It should be read by the many who do not appreciate the bountiful blessings we have in America. Summary: Beautiful Mind This book moves me. The author beautifully depicts daily scenes in the lives of the conqueror and the conquered. She finds beauty and humor amidst the monumental losses of war. She seduces with words so wonderfully choreographed I find myself reading a passage over and over just to savor her mastery of language. That Ms Nemirovsky is able to to enlighten and enrich us with her artistry under the circumstances in which she found herself elevates her to the status of Angel and reminds that no one can rob us of our hearts and minds. I am grateful for the survival of this manuscript. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A happy book For an American ex-pat, living in the South of France, this was an especially interesting book. Not just the colorful description of a successful and happy life, but how, this tall Californian, who has never been in France and did not speak the language managed to make it a success. Julia Child's positive attitude, her curiosity and her talent to pick the good things out of this foreign and strange country, won her real friends among the French people and enriched her life. Her energy was impressive. After a short while, she mastered the language, she studied in the best French cooking schools, held cooking courses for Americans in Paris and started to write her now famous Cook Book. She also had time to enjoy life in France. The reader, through her happy book learns to know a lovely, interesting and pleasant country, which's population knows how to enjoy the pleasures of life, especially good eating and good wine. Those who read her Cook Books will be interested to find out how she acquired the Knowledge that went in to writing these very successful books. Summary: An Intimate and Mouth Watering Memoir This is the truth, that I'm almost embarrassed to admit: First off, my limited knowledge of Julia Child was reduced to perhaps a snippet of her show on television in passing, but more than that, Dan Aykroyd's send up of her on Saturday Night Live. Here's the other thing: I thought she was British.Whoops. California girl, Pasadena California. So I'm not sure what drew me to this delightful and informative bio, other than perhaps I thought it would do for France what Francis Mayes has done for Tuscany, it's people , and it's food. Her prose is breezy and sweeping , since she's covering nearly fifty years in a short amount of time. Her love for her husband, and the various parts of France are in strong evidence, but her passion for food is what obviously drives her. The fascinating thing is seeing how that passion and near obsession is cultivated, through her gourmet education, and later writing her cookbooks and doing her television show. I suppose the ultimate would be to hear her voice while relaying these stories, but it's easy to imagine her as she's telling them. Or maybe that's still Dan's voice in my head. Either way, they're great. Summary: My Life in France The personality of Julia Child shines through her writing. A quick read that is very informative as well. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Good Purchase I have taken a few French classes and this was a fun easy refresher to teach and go over the basics in spoken French language. It also helps refine pronunciation and was exactly what I was looking for. It might be a little challenging for someone with no experience at all in the language. Summary: The First 3 CDs Helped Tremendously! I had to go to Paris for a conference and didn't know the first bit of French other than "Bon jour!" and "Oui." I searched through many options and, after reading all the reviews, decided on French Complete. I spent two months (about 3-4 hours per week) listening to the first 3 CDs (Level 1) over and over and over again in the car. By the time I left for my trip, I was surprisingly comfortable with basic French conversation. I was confident I would be just fine. Then the trip came and I was surprised that I was more than okay! I not only managed to get directions, talk to the waiters/waitresses, and purchase items, I even had an American woman stumble through asking me something in French after hearing me talk with a French woman. She thought I was French! I was also able to help an American couple purchase metro tickets at the ticket window. I didn't go on to Level's 2 or 3 before my trip because they got even more in-depth than what I figured I needed for my trip and I was correct. However, I had so much fun on my trip and had so much fun speaking French with the French, that I'm going to go back and follow-up on my lessons. It's true that a lot of French will talk to you in English, but I never could have found that hidden metro station at 12:30 am without these CDs. And that would have meant walking all the way back to my hotel. One last thing. The CDs come with a little booklet that you can read along with (assuming you're not driving at the time) to see the phrases. I highly recommend NOT using the booklet. You'll get too caught up in pronouncing French words with an English pronunciation. Just listen and learn and you'll be fine. If you want to, look at the words AFTER you know how to pronounce them and what they mean. Then, you can actually start learning how to read and speak. French Complete is tr?s bon! Summary: Good Car French Course Overall * Some Drawbacks 'French Complete' by Henry N. Raymond is good solid French course. When compared to courses such as Berlitz, Living Language and especially Pimsleur I would even say that 'French Complete' is an excellent value for the money. As with other 'Learn in Your Car' courses that I have reviewed, what I like about 'French Complete' is the amount of vocabulary that they present in the course as well as the number of verb tenses that are taught. The voices on the CDs are extremely clear and the method used is effective, to a point. This is where I feel some improvement may be needed. There really is no effort on the behalf of the creators of this fine course to provide the learner with some means of expanding their ability to create their own authentic sentences. The 'canned' sentence approach where the student simply repeats sentences with vocabulary, however useful and relevant, is much less effective in achieving the goal of fluency in a language than a course that would emphasize sentence 'creation' based on the individuals needs and goals. This emphasis on 'real' as opposed to 'rote' learning is the optimal way to learn to speak a foreign language. Few courses have it and 'Learn in Your Car' is no exception. Still, it must be said that the sheer amount of material that is presented in this course in an effective, pleasant and clear manner makes this an outstanding value for the money. Tip: Supplement this course with one or two other 'car courses' which feature different teaching approaches. I would stay away from Pimsleur courses because of the limited vocabulary, rigid structure with no multi-tracks, and excessive price. There are many other good French courses out there. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Wow! This book is amazing! I bought it for a good friend of mine as a birthday present, and now it has become one that everyone asks for! The pictures are beautiful and these men's bodies are incredible! A very tasteful and aesthetically pleasing collection! Summary: If Madonna likes it then it must be pleasing This book was originally published in France last year, and I was very eager to see a US release. Although, there is very little text in the book (only on the inside cover, and at the very end it gives the players' names and ages.) "Looker Room Nudes" is a photo book. I purchased from Amazon.com for only $[...] with free shipping and I found this to be an excellent price. Because this is a very luxurious, oversized, hardcover book. And, for a book of this quality and magnitude I would have been glad to pay at least double that price, plus shipping. As an openly homosexual man I am only too elated to display this visual tome on my coffee table. Because all the men are angelic, the photos are very tasteful, and the pictures are interesting. Please know that none of the pictures inside the book can be described as crass or vulgar at all. Instead, the majority of the pictures inside are of their faces, backs, and muscular chests. There is only one fully nude picture of a statuesque lord sitting down with his uncircumcised penis exposed for all to gaze at. There is also a snippet in the front of the book by superstar Madonna, in French. In my humble opinion "Dieux du Stade" is pure art. All the pictures inside this book are stunning black and white. Francois Rousseau managed to reveal each man at their strongest and most vulnerable simultaneously. I recommend this book to anyone that appreciates top-quality photography, art, or the delicate nude male form. Summary: The Book Outshines even the Dieux du Stade Calendars and Videodiscs! The extraordinarily beautiful and lavishly produced calendars and videodiscs that have come out year by year of photography, of supremely fine calibre, of the rugby players who are members of the team, Dieux du Stade, Paris, and of their "guests", i.e. other rugby players from teams all over the world, have become iconographic monuments of the nude and nearly-nude male body. However, this book, drawing upon the wealth of photos and stills from the videos, perhaps inlucding yet other images as well of the same and perhaps other men, surpasses even previous products. This book is gorgeous; it is overwhelming; it is an exalted tribute to the male body and to the god-like figure of the professional athlete. There is something almost supernatural at times in the supernal beauty and naturalness, as Rousseau captures them for immortality, of these varied and magnificent men that makes one tremble, not just with sexual arousal (but that, too, and how!), but with wonder at the sheer grace, strength, and allure of the male human form and of the photographer's art. Judging from the copyrights, which are given up to 2007, well in the future at the time of the book's publication, one presumes that there are images and probably players, too, not yet included in the videodiscss and calendars that have come out to date. This is a lavish book and more than well worth its price, a fine monographic tribute to the photographer, Francois Rousseau, as well as to such men who, astoundingly, have been permitting themselves to be photographed so intimately. There is little written text, so whether the buyer is English- or French-speaking (or of any other language), the book will be a worthwhile purchase for truly anyone, anywhere in the world. Women and gay men will thrill at these photos, but so will lovers more generally of the nude in art of Rousseau's level as he has attained it with the camera! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Michel Thomas Basic French 8 CD Course I took French in High School and wanted to pick it up again - this course was exactly what I needed. After 30 years the language seemed to pour back after Michel's conversational learning methods. Althought it builds throughout the course, you could probably jump in anywhere and do fine. I can't wait for the new 4 CD set to come out in the US! Summary: Truly understand French I took 3 years of college French and I learned many things in the first 5 minutes of the first CD I never knew. Michel Thomas's method is stress free, without rote memorizations, and truly revolutionary. The lessons move you to som elevel of proficiency very quickly by linking French to English by common words and rules. You start by learning how to put together setences. Since re-creation is much harder then recognition, you will gain facility with French very quickly. I applaud this method and will be buying the advanced set soon. Summary: A non French native who teaches French better then the Frenchs The day we received in the mail the CD "French with Michel Thomas", my wife began listening to the CDs non-stop. In a matter of days, I did notice improvement with her speech and more confidence in expressing herself. No more then 10 days later, I did witness a huge improvement with her French writing. She just could structure the sentences better. Right away, I ordered the "Michel thomas Advanced French". I wish I had ask for the fast delivery. My wife, a Burmese native, is taking French Classes at the Alliance Francaise in the country we are residing. She has compltd 4 sessions of 10 weeks, with 2 hours classes 3 times a week, not to mention the 2 to 4 hours a day study. Being a French Canadian myself, I have been helping her with her studies from the beginning. The method used by the Alliance is everything but frindly user. I was considering getting a private tutor to help her with her stuies at the Alliance. now we do not think about getting a private tutor. I know what I am about to say might sound corny but Michel is her tutor,at any hours of th eday she wishes to, for a fraction of the price we would have paid. To tell the truth, I was reluctant to purchase the method. The publicitiy did not convince me at all. I thought it was just another advertisement with promises that would fail to deliver. Nevertheless, as there was only one way to find out, I give it a try. Still at the beginning, when I heard Michel voice, with his mild foreign accent (English or else) on the CD, I was not impressed. I also though the method slightly simplistic. However, the resuts I saw with my wife improvements convinced me. Remarks: it would have be nice to know that the 2 CDs from the "Speak French with Michel Thomas" are the first 2 CDs of the "French with Michel Thomas" DELUXE EDITION. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Learning Experience I have always enjoyed cooking, but had never read this book. I thought that traditional French cooking would be difficult to master, high in fat and unnecessarily time-consuming. Also -- I'm Italian-American -- I thought that Hazan was the last word in cooking. Boy, was I wrong. A few months ago, my teenage son returned from his first trip abroad raving about the meals that he'd had in Paris. I knew from experience how great those meals could be and, to please him and give my family a new dinner experience, I bought "Mastering" and tried a few recipes. I am now totally hooked. Julia's recipes are clear, well-organized and easy to follow. The book is exquisitely -- and logically -- organized, with each section beginning with a master recipe and continuing through several variations that build on the basic theme. This method of organization teaches the structure as well as the details of each recipe and encourages further experimentation by the reader. In other words, by following the recipes, you learn to cook. (Having recently read "My Life In France," I now know that this was Child's intention, and that "Mastering" took years to write, with every recipe tested and refined a multitude of times.) Some recipes contain too much butter or cream for modern diets, but these recipes are easily modified. The techniques, however, are flawless: my pie crust was flaky and did not shrink; the ratatouille (which is low in fat) was perfect and beautiful; the swordfish provencale was so good that my son, who never eats leftovers, ate the leftovers cold out of the refrigerator. Indeed, the pastry dough recipe works so well that, after turning it out into the pan, I exclaimed aloud, "Julia Child is brilliant!", much to the surprise of my plumber, who was working in the house at the time and had walked into the kitchen to ask about a leak. In sum, if you have been afraid of this book, don't be, and if you think that it has become dated or irrelevant -- a mere collector's item -- you are very wrong. I still love Hazan, but "Mastering" is the master class. Summary: 5 stars for a 5 star lady This is the cookbook that formed the foundation for Julia Child's famous series "The French Chef." Some parts of this edition recognize the new appliances available since the book was published 25 years before, like the food processor. The recipes, however, are still classics. Although Julia apologizes in the foreword for being neither French nor a trained chef, it is this well-written, comprehensive cookbook that helped to change the way Americans eat. Although some of the recipes are a bit intimidating like entirely boning a chicken or duck, most are attainable. For the best quiche you've ever made - buy the crust if you can't bake - make Julia's recipe for this Lorraine classic. Summary: A Timeless Classic for The Would-be French Chef This is one of two books to get, to kick you from "macaroni and cheese" to cheese souffle. The second is "Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 2". The book takes the reader from the basics of equipment, cooking terms, methods of preparation, and finally, eases the reader from the simple to the most challenging aspects of the art of French cookery. I've owned my copy for over 10 years, and to this day, I can still learn from it. The basics of saucemaking (introduced in one of the earlier chapters), for example, is still basically the same for both the home chef and the four-star saucier. Thanks to this classic work, Julia Child has empowered countless home chefs (and quite a few professional chefs) to practice this tasteful art. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Every bit as good as Pimsleur German I Pimsleur Language Programs products are among the best-selling audio language courses available. `Organic learning' seeks to approximate the conditions in which ordinary language-learning takes place. The process is almost entirely aural, supplemented only minimally-or at the student's discretion, not at all-by reference to reading lessons after each half-hour lesson. Clearly, Dr. Pimsleur and his disciples-I use the word advisedly, as a glance at promotional and instructional materials will demonstrate-have done their pedagogical homework. Utilizing the spectacular power of the brain for on-the-hoof language analysis and replication, the Pimsleur Language Programs lure their listeners into meaning-rich dialogues, providing only the information required for one to respond. The closest thing to a grammatical concept that a student hears is a brief warning that `this is the form used with feminine words'. Yet with a little effort, the student intuits her way to the correct and timely use of all that grammar describes. This is an extremely productive approach at the level of basic conversational skills that is the bread and butter of Pimsleur's products. The course writers have found just the level at which to challenge the student without counterproductive frustration. One is encouraged to achieve 80% control of a unit before moving on. Many students will accomplish this in most units on the first try. Yet the approach in these three volumes is never simplistic, reducing the urge to be somewhere else or engaged in a more advanced section to the vanishing point. Pimsleur Language Programs has populated websites with two highly sellable language-learning concepts: the `principle of anticipation' and `graduated interval recall'. The former refers to the interval during which the student is challenged to retrieve information to which he has been exposed, occasionally take some small step in the processing of it, and then utilize that information in a response. PLP has refined just the right intervals to facilitate prompt but unhurried responses. `Graduated interval recall' refers to the time lag between the initial learning of a language component and its subsequent reintroduction in a new conversation. Here, too, the Pimsleur method shows its debt to years of practice and research. By my lights, they do this perfectly. Regionally and socially, PLP's German course(s) aim at an `educated' dialect that will prepare the student to be conversant throughout Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. German I, II, and III are available in cassette tape and CD versions, packaged attractively and with sufficient ruggedness to survive both winter and summer Midwestern temperatures in my car. Summary: Sehr Gut I took two years of German in high school, which was some decades ago, and after a ski trip to Austria I decided to brush up on my German. I've bought numerous books, dvds, tapes, etc. and for learning conversational German this has been far and away the best. It's pricey, no doubt, but it's very, very well done and very user friendly. I had a professor in college who said we learn the most in an area of "just manageable difficulty". In other words, stretched and challenged but not made to despair. This is the arena the Pimsleur cd/tapes work in. I liked this one (German II) so well, I also bought 3 and 4. Two is the most well done, the guy on three sounds a bit like he's being held against his will, but the folks on this one are engaging and pleasant. They combine techniques of having you repeat German phrases with having you answer questions in German (can be a bit challenging) and a couple of other techniques. There is a bit of the unavoidable "canned" feel to the conversations, but nowhere near as much as in other tapes I've tried. I felt like I learned a lot and on a trip to Switzerland this year I was able to understand a lot and be conversational. As I said III and IV, especially IV are not quite so well done, but II is excellent, and a lot cheaper than the average German course at a college would be. The only thing it lacks is much help with syntax, you probably need to plow through a German grammar book on your own for that. Summary: The best of the Pimsleur German series. If you thought Pimsleur German I helped you to learn German, you really must move onto Pimsleur German II. It is, without a doubt, one of the best tools you could possibly use to progress from barely being able to get your message across to being able to express not only what you want, but what you think about things. Both Pimsleur German I and II were updated in 2002, so they represent the best of decades of trying to perfect the language learning experience. What you will find in Pimsleur German II can't easily be found anywhere else, because it teaches you to speak the way Germans speak, complete with the little inflections that you would use without even thinking in your native language. I've never seen such things in any other program. If you have the means, move onto Pimsleur German II as soon as possible after finishing Pimsleur German I. It will put you light years ahead in only a few short weeks. Summary: |
