Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Get The Most Out Of Gooooooooooooogle Without a doubt, Google is the most important and fastest growing software company probably since Microsoft. It's not just what Google puts out but the QUALITY of what they release that makes them so special. It seems that Google is coming up with new, amazing tool nearly every week (certainly every month), and sometimes it's hard to be able to track all the new features or know what features exist because there is something new to find so often. Because of these facts, the fact that a Google book is out on the market is a welcome addition. The fact that 'Google: The Missing Manual' is that book makes life even sweeter. Of course I am going to like it, it's a "Missing Manual" book, probably the best line of publications that O'Reilly puts out! If you have read any of my reviews before, you know that I love this line, and I know when I pick up a MM text it's going to be savory. From improving searching techniques to using GMail to using the web tools available from Google, this book will make you a Google expert in no time at all. Google Video, Google Images, Google AJAX-powered Suggest, there seems to be a Google for every problem out there... when will we see Google Open Heart Surgery or Google Kung Fu?? Remember that scene in The Matrix when Neo is being downloaded will all pertinent information in only a couple hours' time?? There's no doubt that Google is working on an application and when it comes out it will no doubt be a hit like everything else this incredible company puts out. Do I sound like a Google mark? Possibly, but I appreciate highly the quality of what this company does, much like I appreciate the Missing Manual line of books. ***** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Summary: Second Edition as good as the First The second edition was only released last month, so all reviews written prior to March 2006 are referring to the first edition. This is a worthwhile upgrade, with about 80% new content from what I can tell from comparing the two editions. This should be no surprise, as Google's usability and features have been growing right along with its stock price over the past two years. The authors start out with simple features such as the "cached" and "similar pages" links, the little-known but powerful Google Answers, and the timesaving and pop-up-avoiding Google Toolbar. The authors also show how to use Google as a calculator, dictionary and package tracker. Readers will also learn techniques and tricks such as which search words to choose and how to ask for the specific items that Google can find. A full chapter is devoted to Gmail, which is Google's reliable free email service. Part 3 of the book is devoted to webmastering with Google by guiding readers through getting listed in Google, and taking advantage of AdWords, AdSense, and Google Analytics to make money on the Web. The one new tool that Google sports that worries me is Google Desktop. Google Desktop Search is what you might call a distributed application. Part of the application gets installed onto your own computer, while part of it runs off of Google's Web site. The idea behind coding the application in this manner is that you can visit Google and search either the Internet or your own PC through a single interface. After installing Google Desktop Search, an index is made of the contents of your PC. Included in the index are E-mail messages contained in Outlook and Outlook Express. The software also indexes Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files, as well as plain text and AOL Instant Messenger chats. This seems easily exploitable by hackers, and I think that the book should make more of the potential dangers. I notice that Amazon does not show the table of contents, so I do that here: PART 1: SEARCHING WITH GOOGLE Chapter 1. Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Lots of White Space.... This books packs about 20 pages of content in to 250 actual pages. Uses big text and lots of white space. Also fills space by repeating same basic ideas over and over. Would make a good pamphlet. Don't waste your money. Summary: Waste of time, shallow, filled with spelling errors The book is so bad that I'm compelled to review it so that others do not make the same mistake and waste their time as I have. * Many of the chapters are 2-3 pages each. This would have been less annoying if there was valuable & concise information in those few pages. However, the ideas are shallow, not well supported, but the author rambles and repeats them over & over. * Spelling errors -- for example, "umbrella" was spelled as "unbrella" and "advertise" as "advertsie" and these were just two I noticed without even looking very closely. This is small thing but makes you think that the author just threw the book together. * Overall, the book is very conversational & unprofessional. The author used sentence fragments in almost every paragraph, and many times the author would introduce a topic by asking "What is XX? Well I'll tell you." (literally, this is the sentence structure, word for word, what was used over & over). * Author advises for several topics (e.g., photographing items to sell) that the reader should buy his other books to learn more in depth. This is frustrating since nothing in the book is covered in any depth. I read through this book in about an hour, and it was enough to decide to return this and look to get other Ebay books instead. Summary: A one idea book This book has one idea -- feed from a data base -- and he beats it to death. It is not really helpful beyond the data base idea. Summary: |
