Summary: very good all-around reference
I primarily work as a structural-architectural engineer and am becoming more and more involved in civil-site work. This handbook is exactly what I was looking for in terms of something that would quickly get me "up to speed" in the fundamentals of civil-site design.
Of course, no single book could (or should) be thought of as a substitute for the experience and mentoring received from seasoned professionals in a design office, but this one has enough technical explanation and details to get you going with confidence.
I choose this one over the Colley book (reviewed both before making purchase) as Land Development Handbook has more of the technical info that engineers would seek.
Summary: Difficult to follow!
I am in a class at Community College of Baltimore County and we are using this book at this time. Our whole class along with the Professor find this book to be very difficult to follow. The book constantly repeats itself making it extremely boring to read and is not fluent at all. They have examples that reference charts that are 3-5 pages apart from the problem being discussed the formulas you almost have to figure out for yourself how they are used and there are alot of typos.
I recomend burning this book!!!!!!!
Summary: A Must Have Pub
Ever since I purchased this publication I can't stop using it. Every civil engineer should have this as part of their reference library, regardless of your area of specialty. It provides macro to micro scale explanations of general processes, design applications, etc in a very readable format. More times than I can remember I have looked to this book for an answer or at least for some guidance and was throuroughly satisfied. No it is not a definitive reference for civil engineers but its' breadth and usability overshadows any technical shortcomings. If I had to have just one reference book for my area of practice (general civil), this would be it. Yeah, yeah, the "Standard Handbook for Civil Engineers" is a more definitive reference, but I usually find out what I need in this pub.

ps - Almost everyone of my fellow employees that has used the book has purchased their own, find someone you know who has a copy and check it out for yourself.

Summary: Very Detailed
This is a very detailed textbook. If you want to learn about Geology in great detail this is the book for you. I recently learned that a new version will be coming out soon. I know this because my university will not buy the book back since the new edition will replace this edition next semester. If you plan on buying this book wait because the price will go down as soon as the new edition comes out.

Summary: Easy as pie.
The nontechnical guide arrived in the mail in the speedy fashion typical of Amazon. I ripped into the packaging, withdrawing my hardbound book on Petroleum knowledge. I quickly flew threw the pages of the book, noting how the information was presented. Well organized according to subject, ie Geology, exploration, Drilling and Production, each one of these areas of the oil industry was explained in simple, easy to understand language, and would allow this book to be used as a class room text. There were many pictures, diagrams and drawn out explanations about the subject being explained. The material presented information in a specific area and in a manner that was easy to absorb, find again and use.

The book would allow me to become the oilman of my dreams, at least in my head. I have just finished reading the book, taking about a week or two to do so, and inclulded many margin comments in my book. This item was a good purchase, in that it provided the information I needed in a manner that I could use. There were many recommended readings in other publications. I would recommend this book for all readers, except the hardened oil man with years of experience. For him I am sure there is another source of information.
Summary: Very informative book - a must have for the Petroleum industry
We purchased this book to supplement some internal training for our company. It is the most comprehensive book on the subject that I have found, and we did a lot of research. We will be using it for a pre-requisite to a geology course for all of our new employees.

Great book!
Summary: Excellent overview of the industry
This book is exactly what I was looking for. The only thing it could have done better is spend more detail on the different parts of a well and deep sea platforms. The pictures are good; sufficient for the visual learner. I would recommend this book as a class text for an introductory class on petroleum geology. It touches on everything, including how to read a well log. I strongly recommend buying this book over "The Petroleum Industry: A Non-Technical Guide" by Conway.

Summary: Very dissatisfied with this seller
I purchased a textbook on May 11 and it supposedly shipped on May 15, 2006. It is now June 2 and I have yet to receive this order. I do not believe that it takes 21 days for a book to arrive. What is even more infuriating is that the seller has ignored all my e-mails regarding my order. I definitely have every intention of letting Amazon know just how poorly this seller treats customers and I expect that Amazon will have to refund my money because these people won't even acknowledge a customer once they have your money. I WILL NEVER BUY FROM THIS SELLER AGAIN UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!!!!
Summary: A great book covering everything
This textbook is one of the best scientific books I have seen. Not only does it cover earth science (like geology), but astronomy and meteorology also. It covers every topic that you possibly want to know about. The authors leave no information out. I had to use this for Science Olympiad, and it helped me so much. The explanations are great, the images beautiful, and the diagrams very helpful. I would suggest this for anyone that has an interest in Earth Science or Meteorology. It is a great book.

Summary: Great content - not a durable book, though
Okay, let me get a few things out of the way up front. First off, I generally hate textbooks. I've been in college 6 years and counting, and it's fair to say that most textbooks (regardless of subject) are written and edited in a very clueless fashion. Second, though I have many personal interests in the realm of science (quantum mechanics, string theory, and so on), it's often a major chore to study 100-level science at a university. Doubly so if it's a scientific subject you have no interest in - which in my case would be geology.

Back to the topic at hand, this book counters all of what I just said. This is an outstanding textbook by any standard. I'd even recommend it for non-students who have an interest in geology and earth science. Combined with a good instructor, this book makes an excellent resource and a surprisingly enjoyable read. I had virtually no personal interest in geology going into the class, but this book communicates a good deal of practical knowledge as well as just plain interesting trivia.

I do have some issues with the book in a physical sense. Content-wise, /How Does Earth Work/ is fantastic. But the design of the book is troublesome. It's large, unwieldy, and the cover is very flimsy. A book this size should really be hardcover, because the glossy pages are just too vulnerable to folds and tears even with careful use. I take good care of my books, and don't just randomly slop them into my backpack. Even with all my efforts to keep the book in tact, it already has minor creases in the cover, bent corners on pages, and other slight damage. This is after just two weeks of class, folks.

The book looks great, with all the color photos and such... But the physical design of it is not at all realistic for college use. Make peace with the fact that you're not going to be able to re-sell this book for near new price at the end of the semester. Beyond that, /How Does Earth Work/ is a great resource, and one of the very few college books I'd highly recommend to students and non-students alike.

Summary: Comprehensive and thorough
Comprehensive and thorough, clear and understanable even for youth. Ilustrations contribute a lot to the overall picture.
Summary: Pretty good overview of environmental science
I took a class which used this textbook at the University of California, Santa Barbara, which was co-taught by one of the authors, Ed Keller. This is an introductory book that provides a decent overview of the problems we are currently facing in regard to the environment, what we can do to solve those problems, and other opportunities that our environment can give us.

Summary: Bad business practice in the Coal Industry
This book would be good if it had a different title, say "How the Coal business is ruining the World :( I know I'm a hypocrite as I use electricity)" A folksy chat about lives destroyed and people impoverished etc etc. Unfortunately another diatribe against poor business practice, a ruined environment and 'bad guys' in big business exploiting the vulnerable. But not about the coal business how it works and what it does ie Big Coal. Mr Goodell is a journalist who wants to be a novelist. The publishing industry should know better.
Summary: Dirty Power and the Cronies Who Love It
Add this book to the growing supply of expansive investigative reports on the true issues behind America's (and the world's) energy policies. Jeff Goodell offers a strong political economy focus that avoids both environmental horror-mongering and shifty industrial denials, with equitable and realistic reporting on all of the above. Goodell starts with an examination of the modern (actually the not-so-modern) coal business, and expands his analysis to include all of the social, political, economic, and environmental effects of the industry's operations. This includes the illnesses, poverty, and inequality faced by people who live near coalmines and power plants (particularly the unending misery and exploitation of both the people and environment of Appalachia); the political shenanigans and economic attack-dog strategies of old-school coal barons and their pocketed politicians; and coal's growing legacy of pollution and its severe contribution to global warming and climate change.

Goodell's analysis is an excellent example of the political economy method, in which typical complaints about problems in either category are not the end of the discussion, but are used as examples in a stronger analysis of real-world causes and effects, especially as applied to present and future political/economic trends and their effects on real people. In a nutshell, we learn that coal might be (relatively) cheap, plentiful, and easy to obtain, but it is not the solution to the world's growing energy supply difficulties. The problem is not just pollution, but also the creeping economic and social realities that arise from our dependence on an outdated industry, that blocks much-needed innovations by distorting free market processes and keeping citizens in the dark. Goodell fleshes out his strong analysis with a healthy amount of cynicism and a useful look at how citizens can make a difference in putting coal where it really belongs - the dirty dustbin of history. Summary: The Problem with Coal
When the politicians say anything except how bad their opponet is they say what they think that we want to hear. The truth, even if they knew it, is painful. And no politician who wants to get elected talks about pain. After all, his opponet will be telling everyone just how good it is and that if we only elect them all will be wonderful.

The truth is that we are running out of energy, specifically cheap, easy to get energy. This book talks about one of the answers that has been talked about over and over, increasing use of coal. The author, quite correctly points out some of the problems with considering coal to be the solution:

Coal is a horrible polluter. The biggest pollution from it is carbon dioxide, the greenhouse gas. Increasing consumption will make global warming worse. In spite of what the Government is saying, global warming is real. One effect of global warming is bad storms - ask the people in New Orleans.

The easy to get coal has already been mined. What's left is of lower quality, in smaller deposits, harder to mine, more expensive to get.

What the book doesn't have is a solution. Here are the problems in coal. There are also big problems in all of the other areas talked about:

Biofuels - By the time you consider fertilizer (made mostly from natural gas), farming (lots of big diesel powered machinery), converting to fuel there is a real question as to whether you gain any net energy.

Hybrid cars - They will either use gasoline, diesel fuel, or will be plugged into the electric grid at night. That means more coal burned.

Solar power - very expensive, it will get better, but unlikely to provide a big answer.

Nuclear power - probably the only real answer but not very popular with the public.

Most people don't vote, don't read the paper, don't really care except that gasoline has gotten more expensive. The public doesn't want to know, they just want the light to come on when they flip the switch without having any understanding at all as to why it does.

The book doesn't offer a solution because there isn't a solution except to change our whole lifestyle, and we don't want to do that.
