Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Manifest destiny meets myraid web font When you read the title, you might make the false presumption that this is a book about Google; it really isn't. The author puts forth a concept of a database of intentions early on. In his words: "The Database of Intentions is simply this: the aggregate results of every search ever entered, every result list ever tendered, and every path taken as a result...Taken together this information represents a real-time history of post-Web cultuare - a massive clickstream database of desires, needs, wants, and preferences that can be discovered, subpeonaed, archived, tracked and exploited for all sorts of ends." (p.6) It is the importance of this idea that drives Battelle and the book. He points out early on, that this is a book about search using the Google and other significant stories, to illustrate his point - that Search is bigger than all of us. This may be a potentially cold topic, but Battelle takes the reader on a fascinating journey through time. Really it presents a history of search, with reminders of where Google is in the process/picture. Battelle gives us the technical side (watered down) of searches, the growth of the search economy, big names such as Monier, AltaVista, Compaq, Lycos, Yahoo, Excite until we get to the birth of Google - an interesting and informative chapter. He then takes a detour on the history of GoTo.com arguing that it is this, Bill Gross' business model that "saw in search seeds of an economic revolution." (p.93) Battelle then spends time tracing the business model and, essentially, Bill Gross' career from early GNP to IdeaLab and to GoTo.com. Essentially, Gross saw something in the undifferentiated traffic - the fact that intentional traffic was/could be valuable. Enter advertisers paying when their ads are clicked upon. The story of GoTo continues and leads to Google and (messy) dealings. The search regains power. Portals regain status. The Chapter on Google is informative, fascinating, and a worthwhile read. Battelle's writing skills come to the fore in this one as he keeps us as up-to-date as a book can be. The sense of the giant of Google is reinforced but none of the panic. The following chapter on the Search economy is really a prediction and validation of Battelle's own beliefs - that Search is essential to the economy and the one binding thing across all sites. The last few chapters jump back and forth between Google and the importance of Search addressing issues such as privacy and the government. The book ends with the Perfect Search and reminds us once again what searching is all about and its importance. These chapters are a good read. One interesting idea that came from reading this book is that the next decade is going to be known not for the expansion of technology, but the ability to make the information already at the beck and call of this technology into ordered, tidy packages for consumption. Think of the Internet like the US economy, once driven by industry, the margin for innovation is now static compared to the service sector. Battelle's book is an odd read at first; his outlined intentions jar a little with the jumpiness of the early chapters.. Asserting early that he didn't want to write a book about Google (and the Google people didn't want that either!), or just another business book, I think he achieves that. However, it is in his writing about people and situations that the book comes alive. Should you read this? Yes. It's an important book giving breadth and depth to an area we may not really think that much about. Will search engines really drive the change in web culture? Summary: Great Insight into SE History John Battelle brilliantly lays out the history of search engines in his book The Search: How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture. While many have focused on Google exclusively for the past few years Battelle explores the reality behind Google and others. John Battelle also has a weblog available to keep you updated on the latest and greatest. Though this book was published a while back it is definately still up-to-date as far as a reference. An easy read, I recommend this to anyone in the search engine industry from advertisers to searches, marketers to web designers. Very informative. You will not be disappointed! Summary: Book on Google that tries hard to pretend that it is a book on search This book tries hard to say that it is a book on search and not on Google. Indeed, even the reviews on the backcover tries hard to convince me that this is not a book on Google. However, I get the impression that this is a book that was probably originally intended as a book on Google, but was late to the game, and tries to be rebranded as a book on search. To the author's credit, he does add material on search that is more original, but the feeling that this book started out as a book on Google never left me. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: One of the best AdWords book available This Adwords book by Andrew Goodman is probably one of the best Adwords books around and even got positive feedback from the Google Engineer Matt Cutts (at Matt Cutt's personal Blog). The AdWords Service changes all the time which makes books about it very tough and outdated quickly. A lot of the things you can learn in this book are not specific to AdWords though. They can be applied to any PPC Service out there. In addition to this print version would it make sense to get the new eBook from Andrew Goodman as well. The eBook is frequently updated which explains the much higher price tag than the one of this print version. Summary: Somewhat out of date but still pretty useful Google is the most popular Internet search engine, so having your ad pop up on its search results can be a boon for your business. The challenge is to get your ad to appear on the first page of search results by using just the right keywords. Author Andrew E. Goodman shows readers the best ways to play the AdWords game. The primary warning is that Google AdWords rules change faster than a book can be published, and they have changed since this book was issued. However, the book still provides valuable concepts and ideas for online ad campaigns. Learn how to select the right keywords, write copy, test your ads, modify campaigns based on collected data, set a budget and reduce the chances of attracting the wrong prospects. We believe this book gives readers a better understanding of how to work with search engine ads. Summary: Excellent AdWords book This is probably the best AdWords book that I've laid my hand on. It's is certainly much better than the similar book called "Google Advertising Guerrilla Tactics: Google Advertising A-z Plus 150 Killer Adwords Tips & Tricks". If you are deciding between these books, grab Winning Results With Google Adwords. Although that the 'Guerilla Tactics' book is newer, this book is much more useful. All books about AdWords are somehow outdated, but it's not really important. All the fundamental things are included in this comprehensive book. It has helped me to improve my AdWords campaign which is now more profitable, 'Guerilla Tactis' book failed to do that. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: I really like HeadFirst and HeadRush series. and particularly this book . It's very interesting, funny, concise and comprehensive. I really enjoyed reading it. Summary: The best Ajax book Easily the best Ajax book at the moment. The material is both entertaining and infomative. The asynchronous and client/server aspects of Ajax can make it tougher to understand, and the author does a good job of working through those issues in a way that makes it easy to understand. The book also covers the DOM and DHTML issues that you need to get the most out of the browser environment. Summary: Beginners Bible HI this is good for Beginners. not for experts. Lot of things repeated 3,4 times. Which is not there in other headfirst books? Good for who wants to know Some Javascript/HTML basics + Good AJAX Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very Provocative This is an incredible book for anyone entrepreneurial who wants to make more money on the web. The guys ideas and stories will really get your mind whirring -- just read his on-amazon posts for a short example of what I'm talking about and you will see -- this guy means business. Summary: Too much self-promotion I wrote a detailed criticism/ critique of this book, but it didn't get published...??? So here's my concise re-review: The authour spends far too much time plugging his own web sites and software than giving deep suggestions and information. This book may be ok for novices w/ AdSense: a few good tidbits here and there, but frankly, you can get far better, far more reliable and far more UNBIASED information from Google's AdSense homepage and the myriad blogs etc. on AdSense. I'm very suprised that the overall feedback for this book was as high as it is! Save yourself the money, go to the source at Google directly. Summary: Good information but nowhere near as easy as it sounds If you already operate a website and/or and adsense account, this book show you how to increase your earnings. Although he brags about making $600 a day with adsense, very few of us will make more than a couple of bucks. This book does show you how to optimize your ads to increase click through rates but the biggest part in making money with adsense is having lots of traffic enter your website. This book mentions very little about how to make that happen and mainly just recommends other sources that you should buy (which cost several hundred dollars). And unless you are a great webmaster, you might as well just forget it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Do you want to make money on the Web, but don't have the resources to do so? If you do, then this book is for you! Author Harold Davis, has done an outstanding job of writing a practical book for technically inclined people about how to use the Google advertising services to make money. Davis, begins by explaining how to make money from a content-based web site, how to build a site that will get traffic, how to get your site noticed, and the many ways to make money with advertising on your site. Then, the author explains how to work with Google's AdSense, the premier contextual advertising program for content sites. Next, he explains the nuts and bolts, and metrics, of the Google AdWords program--a highly successful mechanism that anybody with a valid credit card can use to place advertisements that reach over 80% of users of the Internet. Finally, the author explains what Google AdWords API web services are and how to write code that interacts with them. In this most excellent practical book, you will get a comprehensive picture of how advertising works on the Web and how you can use the Google advertising programs to your advantage. More importantly, no matter how you want to use Google's advertising services, this book is a perfect resource for Web-savvy entrepreneurs, bloggers, and web developers who want a clear, nuts-and-bolts set of instructions on how to make money with AdSense and AdWords. Summary: Great resource for getting started with Google advertising This book was a pleasent surprise. I bought it for the chapters on Adsense (and these proved to be as useful as expected) but the bonus was the early chapters (1-5) on developing and promoting a site. I wish I had had this book 2 years ago! The section on using press releases was an eye opener. I think even relatively advanced users will find things that make "Google Advertising ..." worthwhile but the book is clearly aimed at beginners and they should not be without it! Highly recommended. Summary: What Took Me So Long? I've had a store front business for 14 years. For eight of those years, my business has also been online. It wasn't until I read Google Advertising Tools that my website began to really work for me. (My web orders have doubled.) I always had clear goals, but had no clear idea how to achieve them. I learned how to submit my site to search engines, get linked to other sites, monitor my traffic, work with banners, and much more. There are still a lot of "tools" I haven't even touched. This book offers step by step assistance for those just starting a web business or anyone who wants to enhance an existing business. I wish I had this book when I paid the folks who originally set up my site. I'd have bought them a copy. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Best-of-class book at using the power of Google! Syngress's "Google Hacking for Penetration Testers" (GHPT) by Johnny Long demonstrates to average Joes the power of Google. The author is the authority on how to use Google to recon an intended target. Considering the narrow focus of the subject, the book is able to thoroughly dissect the various tools and weapons Google offers. Certainly, this book is not admitting anything not already known in the hacking world, but the books does provide a valuable asset as a one-stop-shop at using Google. First and foremost, before scouting a target, you must cover your tracks. GHPT first focuses on anonymity (I was particularly impressed with using Google as a proxy server on page 95). After masking yourself, the book focuses on network mapping, and locating exploitable targets. The book then offers 10 searches to find oodles of information that website owners probably don't want you to have. One chapter is devoted to tips to hunt usernames and passwords. Chapter 12, on automating Google Searches, was particularly valuable to me as I'm an extreme novice at scripting. The book is written in a very simple, plain-spoken (or, more correctly, plain-written) style. While this book should not be the first book on one's security shelf, the subject cannot be any better defined than this book. I give this book 4 pings out of 5: !!!.! Summary: That is a lot of info!!! It has everything you NEED to learn how to hack w/ using something as simple as Google. i never in my life would have thought you could get that much server info and vuln. info with just using Google. Johnny knows his stuff and this is a must have if you are a novice hacker that wants to stem-away from the title; "script-kiddie", this book will help you. Thanks to the authors for this great release. Summary: Nothing great about it! Reconnaissance, reconnaissance, and some more reconnaissance! That is exactly what this book is all about. I won't recommend any serious reader to buy this book, as it does not benefit you from anything except amuse you with what can you do in your free time sitting in front of a search engine. I doubted the contents of this book even before buying this book, but due to IT consultant by profession, I overlooked my skeptic view and bought it. I have nothing against this book, but this book is addressed to the audience those who are already in IT field, and it does not teach you anything new for which you will shell our forty buck and read over 500 pages. However, this can be a good book for some reference and to add in your computer room shelf, but it's just overpriced for the contents it has. Don't expect some great new stuff, it is just some stale information which you will find from internet for free anyway, and hey try to Google it!! ;). I still think this book as hyped one which failed to deliver what it promises. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Provide a very good overview of PPC advertising Many aspects are discussed in a way that even the neophyte will understand it. My experience being with in fraud detection, I read their description of the problem with great interest. I would have loved to see more emphasis on click validity, impression fraud and other recent aspects of click fraud. The material was not very deep but then it's still a very good introduction for the non-expert. Summary: Compelling, powerful, useful I bought this book as a psychologist wanting to build my web site visibility in the city and region where I practice. I hoped not to be bogged down by technical jargon and buried under laborious writing. You can imagine my delight when I found that Boris and Eugene Mordkovich were leading me through the field of seach engine marketing with a fast-paced narrative that made learning effortless, even exciting. And the result? By the time I finished the book, I had fashioned a pay-per-click contract that made my web site appear overnight as number one in twenty search engines. Perhaps it will work as well for you. Summary: Great reference for paid web advertising campaigns! In the Internet Marketing world, things evolve all the time. Search Engines change their algorithms and criteria and users must adapt if they don't want to get their sites to sink in a sea of millions of other web destinations. Therefore, it pays to be informed about the latest trends and options available to make the most of this dynamic world. Boris Mordkovich presents a book that takes the spot as the most comprehensive and informative book on the topic of paid web advertising campaigns from the classic by Catherine Seda, "Search Engine Advertising". Though that book is even referenced by Mr. Mordkovich as a recommended reading (indeed it's very good), the insights, stats and recommendations provided in "Pay-per-click Search Engine Marketing Handbook" are more current and also cater to an audience with more limited pockets, to allow them to make the most of their marketing budgets. An example of this is the chapter he devotes to the very critical issue of click-fraud, its detection and combat. As an online marketer with more than four years of experience in the area, I highly recommend this book. Summary: |
| The Google Story

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Not very good. Reading this, as I did, will give a person a decent high-level idea of how google operates, but there is little or no "inside information". The entire book is the result of the authors' having read through interviews and articles, and simply summarizing them into a mostly-chronological account of Google. The first two chapters are rife with such sycophantish gushing as to make me blush and were nearly unreadable. Although the book did get better, there is a lot of repetition from the authors. Somehow, one of them actually has one a pulitzer prize before; he probably should have it revoked. The book comes across as a fairly well done high-school paper, if a teacher asked for an account of Google. There is nothing at all noteworthy, besides the lunacy of statements such as (loosly quoted): "Not since the printing press has there been an invention responsible for such great dissemination of information as Google [and, yes, they said Google, not the internet, which is a far easier argument to make]". The author refers to the two founders' genius and, although early on in the book is emphatic about their adhereance to scholarly goals and not monetary ones, finishes the book emphasizing their wealth, resistance to competition, and things like this. BTW, the two founders recently bought a massive jet full of niceties for their personal travel. I don't slight them for that (if I had that money, I'd do it, too), but pretending they are people not interested in vast wealth is quite untrue. Summary: great book, shows great insite My friend told me to read this book, and I have already read about one forth of the book, and so far, it is an outstanding book. For me, the book is more of a inspirational model and shows how the "google guys" were determed to do what they wanted to, and even though many did not think it was possible. Brin & Larry did what many people never thought was possible, and because of this, they are where they are today. This book truly shows that no matter what, never give up on a dream. If no one believes in what you do, or shares the same insite, find someone who does, and will help and mentor you. Summary: Not a real inside story of Google On the cover it says "Inside the hottest business, media...". I was expecting an inside story of Google. Instead, it was just made of information from other books, the news, and interviews. This book does give you a good brief history of the company though. If you haven't been following Google the past couple of years and didn't read/watch the news, it would be a good book. Summary: |
