Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Architectual Graphic Standards February 23, 2006 The most up to date technical information for the architectual and construction community. A must have source of information. Summary: Regarding 1934 reprint of 1st edition: good resource This is an excellent resource for anyone looking to understand traditional building materials and methods. The printing is excellent. The actual plates from the original work are valuable not only for the technical information they contain, but the artistry with which they were composed is superb. If you already have a copy of the 2nd or 3rd edition (perhaps even 4th?, but I only have seen the former), this book is superfluous. The material contained herein is essentially the same and in the next two additions. If you can find a copy of the 3rd edition, I would recommend that to anyone looking for an old Architectural Graphics Standards, as it contains some additional information. About the contents: This book is particularly useful regarding masonry construction, including terra-cotta facades. It also shows traditional woodwork details, but only to the extent that the modern AGS editions do--that is to say, there is something to be desired. If that is your interest, there are numerous other books on that subject available on Amazon (just search for them). Summary: Architectural Graphic Standards About every thing you need to know about architecture, drawing architechture, and understanding architecture. This is a valuable addition and source of information for my architectural library. Summary: |

| ISBN: 0321305329 List Price: $49.99 Amazon Price: $31.49 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Covers every aspect of painter This book does not focus on just one aspect of painter, such as painting photographs or raw illustration. It goes through each different use of painter in good detail. This is a strength of the book, but a weakness as well since I was looking more for painting photographs. It is well written and "technical enough." A CD is included. Summary: Great Asset! This book is a real asset for anyone, experienced or not. Easy tutorials, and many examples of what is possible in Painter IX. Summary: CHOCK FULL OF INFO This is an excellent book for PAINTER IX users. There are lots of inspiring paintings from many artists and generally good explanations of the processes used to create them. It does a great job of giving insight into PAINTER's extensive capabilities. My only negative comment would be that the book tries to cover too much. It's scope is overwhelming. I don't believe it would suit the novice PAINTER user. Summary: |

| ISBN: 0596101589 List Price: $39.95 Amazon Price: $25.17 Usually ships in 2 to 3 weeks |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great approach to Photoshop Elements 4 While the Elements 4 manual isn't exactly missing, it is no where near as complete as this one, which covers every feature in great detail. This book belongs on the shelf of every digital photographer who is using Elements. Summary: Photoshop Elements 4 The Missing Manual I adopted Photoshop Elements 4 One on One to use for a class I am teaching on Photoshop Elements 4. This book did not come with a CD. One has to go online to get the lessons that go with the book. That can be a problem for students who do not have Internet access when they are working from home. Believe it or not some people still do not have the Internet! I have used the book to gain addtional information about Photoshop Elements 4 and found it to be very good. I just think a CD or DVD should have been included. All of the classroom books used in the community college have CDs or DVDs in the back of the book so students expect it today. Summary: Manual for Photoshop Elements $ It was brand new and undamaged. Exactly what I expected. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very Good Book -- Beginner's Perspective I knew nothing about Photoshop when I purchased this book. I found the DVD-book combo to be quite helpful. The book can be used as a series of lessons done sequentially or you can use it to find techniques to solve particular problems, so it makes both a good coursebook and a good reference book. The one thing missing in the book for me as a beginner has been commented on by others, and that is the "do this then do this" approach to achieve a result. An example is enhancing photos through levels where you are told to make particular changes. After it is over you are told that you figure out how to make the best changes by moving and nudging levels until the image is optimal. A better approach would be having the reader make the less than ideal changes and having Deke point out what is "wrong" with the result. For a beginner, one of the challenges of Photoshop is learning not just how to use the program but learning how to see the changes, or learning to develop a "Photoshop eye." This is mostly what is lacking in the book. However, there are places where this issue is addressed, including the section on the burn and dodge tools. Overall I am very pleased with this book and found it to be well worth the money spent. In addition to getting across the basics, it has made using Photoshop enough fun that I am now experimenting with more artistic rather than utilitarian techniques. Summary: complaint After ordering and receiving the book ,Iwas somewhat displeased with the fact that I had to go out and buy DVD drive in order to use the DVD that was included as part of the study process. It would seem to me that I should been notified of this before I ordered the book. I now have the book, the DVD ,and no place to go unless I buy a DVD drive for from 60-200.00. I don't think that my comments are unreasonable.Do you? LarryH Summary: Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One Book Review Title: Photoshop CS2 One-On-One Review Author: Deke McClelland Publisher: O'Reilly ISBN: 0596100965 Pages: 475 Reviewer: Michelle LaRock Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Holding an aversion to any type of user manual as indecipherable and confusing, I have found "Adobe Photoshop CS2 One-on-One" by Deke McClelland to be an extremely user friendly and interesting way to learn more about my favorite program Photoshop. The books is arranged into 12 logically ordered lessons, allowing the more experienced user to skip what it not needed and to hop ahead to new things to learn. I found this a wonderful way of setting the lessons up and I resent working through training books only to find that I could have written the lesson rather than taken the lesson. Consequently, this book is great for users at all skills levels The easy to use enclosed CD makes the lessons vibrant and interesting. The sidebar, "Pearls of Wisdom" are excellent allowing the reader to pick up those pro tips we all wish we had someone around to explain and teach. Of course, you won't learn all you need to know about Photoshop in this book or any other, but the hands-on experience available in this book is just what I needed to learn. I've never been able to read a manual and figure out a program. Hands-on is the way to go for me so I found this book particularly helpful. Perhaps those who learn by reading (as some of my colleagues do), will find this book frustrating, but it was just the ticket for me! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A Must Own Book for Serious Residential Do-It-Yourselfers This book is an excellent reference book for use in designing, planning, and building a new house or remodeling an existing one. Whenever I plan on doing something on the house, I double check with this reference before finishing my designs and plans. It's a must own book for serious do-it-yourselfers. Summary: Readers' Digest Version of AGS Although these editions change little, this review is based upon AGS 10th Ed. & AGSRC 2003. Negative: This is bascially a regurgitation of the more complete Architectural Graphics Standards, distilled to a "residential" focus but appears as volumous because some details have been photo-enlarged (in poor-average quality). Few, if any new residential details/information has been provided. Positive: Those ONLY interested in residential construction and NOT requiring a full brace of ALL details will find this quite a good value - compare its price to Architectural Graphics Standards. Recommendation: Anyone in construction should have one, but not both of these books as a prime resource. The content does improve every year, although some years it's like watching grass grow. Challenge: IF there are numerous portions of the Residential version that are unique and new to it, exclusive of passages in the larger AGS version - I would really appreciate a review that contains how to locate these passages, as I've spent enough time trying to find them. If enough of these exist, it would give thought of updating this resource once in awhile. Summary: One volume encyclopedia Experienced readers will benefit from its brief summaries and drawings covering the broadest range of topics imaginable. Some economizing is evident in the paper and printing quality, some of the drawings look 50 years old, but there is lots of reference information, like span tables, solar position data, etc. Probably not the last word on every topic, but still worth consulting. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent text As a 13-yr-old, homeschooled beginner in Flash, I enjoyed this book very much because of its clarity. I learned a lot of things that other authors didn't say anything about. If you are thinking of buying Flash 8 by Phillip Kerman I highly recommend it. It's a great book for beginners and experts alike. If you're looking for a book about Actionscript though, this is not the one. Yes, it covers the fundamentals of Actionscript, but it teaches you mostly about animating, drawing, layers, the library of Flash, etc.. Sams Publishing is also a great company, and you should not have any doubt about purchasing a book published by them. My rating for "Sams Teach Your Self Flash 8 in Twenty-Four Hours by Phillip Kerman" is too low: I wish there was something higher than five stars. Summary: Ya gotta love it I'm a techie not a programmer by trade and I wanted to spice up my company web site, so what the hey lets get some flash on it, <G>.......... I waded thru a couple of other books and didn't feel I was getting a handle on the technology, After the first 2 chapters of Phillips book I felt that on was on the right track. I like to learn thru concrete examples and this book excels at that. You work thru progressively more difficult tasks and in the process gain a solid understanding of the technology. Very nicely done and I recommend this book highly. Summary: I've been a professional programmer for over 30 years, and I loved it I probably have a different background than most readers of this book, because I'm a professional web developer. However, on-line banking doesn't require Flash, so I had never developed with it. But now I want to write some web games, and this book gave me all of the groundwork I needed to start working in Flash. The learning curve for Flash's design tools was the toughest part for me, and the start of this book covers it perfectly. I understood the timeline, layers, keyframes, and all the rest through his clear explanations. The Flash interface is definitely unique, so the explanations made a lot of things clear that otherwise would not have been. The programming side of Flash seems to give many people trouble, but that was the easiest for me. Either way, his chapters about Actionscript are clear, simple but not simple-minded, and paced properly. On top of all that, he answers his e-mail promptly. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: book review This book was very helpful in my computer graphic class. I learned alot about alignment and proximity. I recommend this book to all beginner graphic students Summary: Beginning Design Premiere I bought this book based on the reviews on Amazon.com. As a beginner with no formal design training I felt the book was a good beginning book to jump start my informal training. I am glad I bought it and I agree with the positive reviews of this book. Well worth the time and money! Summary: Fantastic! Wish There Was More... This book is basically the nuts and bolts to good design. If you are not interested in reading about theory and want to jump into designing correctly or you want to improve your designing skills IMMEDIATELY, this is the book to buy. Many design choices (mistakes) are addressed and explained in simple English. You are able to enhance business cards (for ex.) without reading a complete chapter. This book offers instant results. This is definitely one that should be in your collection whether for small business needs or a designing career. I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 only because I wish the author would have given a bit more suggestions. Summary: |
