Summary: Greek Flash Cards Helpful
I have been amazed at how helpful Mounce's Greek flash cards have been. Actually, this is my second set of cards because I previously used the cards that came with Parson's Greek Tutor software. In fact, the usefulness of the Parson's cards led me to buy Mounce's much larger set.

Mounce's cards are both more numerous (a thousand instead of about 150) and more detailed listing different word forms and word frequencies in the NT. Mounce's cards also tie in with his grammar book.

My cheerfulness about the cards arises because I can review a few words in time that is normally lost. I leave the cards next to my computer and pick them up when I am waiting for the computer to boot or download. They also good for reviewing when you are stuck on the phone for long periods of time.

More to the point, reviewing these cards has helped me focus on vocabulary independent of text. I am prone to skim over NT passage with an interlinear text and be too easily content to know the gist of the sentence than the meaning of particular words outside the context. The cards help me focus on that weakness in my study.

Summary: Basics of Bib Greek Vocab Cards
Very useful for learning vocabulary. They contain all the words in Mounce's text, and more. They have chapter references which are useful. It's broken down such that the more common words are listed first (in numerical order). Nice large font. The cards are a little small (the size of a business card). It would be useful if they had a key on each card that indicated the part of speech (noun, verb, adverb, etc.). It also might be useful to have them grouped with a ring.
Summary: A Must Have
If you are using the Mounce textbook for Basic Greek, these cards are a must! They are in the order of the chapters of the book, and they have all the information you need to learn the vocabulary easily and quickly. I carry them around with me on a ring clasp, and they are great! I highly recommend them!

Summary: Excellent book for beginners and beyond
I am a Spanish teacher and use this book with my beginner students as well as more advanced ones. It makes Spanish comprehensible and really highlights the patterns in the language. My students have been able to internalize basic structures with ease. Anyone could use this book even without a teacher. I just wish I could find it in French! The only thing not so good about it is that since it was written back in the 1950s, some of it is a little dated, like mentioning cables (as in telegrams), but you can always update it yourself with current vocabulary like "correo electrónico." It's a great book and easy to use!
Summary: Madrigals Magic Key to Spanish
This book is easy to follow and the author made learning the language easy and fun as well. I was able to finish the book in two weeks. I now enjoy reading articles in Spanish (though I still need to expand my vocabulary significantly to fully understand the text)
Those irregular verbs are tough to master but the author patiently showed his readers a way to remember them systematically.
Overall, a great book. And the price is right. Get an inexpensive CD to learn the correct pronounciation and you are in the right track to be able to speak, read and write Spanish.
Summary: Review of Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish
As the editor of the Learning Spanish Products Reviews (LearningSpanishProductsReviews) site, one of my responsibilities is to review learning-Spanish resources that are listed on Amazon. I am also a native Spanish speaker and a professional private Spanish instructor.

This is a book that will truly deliver on its promise to teach the reader how to speak, read, write and think in Spanish.
It is based on the premise that the English speaker already knows several thousand Spanish words even if you have never heard or spoken a Spanish word before. Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish shows the reader how easy it is to learn Spanish by showing the reader how much Spanish the reader already knows.

The book does more than teach you how to identify Spanish words on sight. It also gives the reader helpful hints so that she can form Spanish words on her own and start speaking Spanish with a extensive, ready-made vocabulary. After reading this book, the reader will be able to do more than just recognize Spanish words, the reader will be able to easily convert English words into Spanish words.

This book does not rely on rote memorization and boring drills. That's something that I like about this book. There is only so much that you can memorize. Instead this book relies on the reader's power of creation.

This book proves that you can create many times more words and sentences than you can ever remember in the same time. And as well all know the process of creation is very exciting and rewarding. On the other hand, memorization is extremely boring. I'm sure that most people will also agree that if you memorize something mechanically you are likely to forget it.

But if it is something that you created it will remain with you forever.

Several readers have pointed out that this book hasn't been revised in decades. I don't consider that a major problem because the advice in this book is timeless.

Summary: The Absolute Best Greek-English Lexicon That Money Can Buy
This is the most comprehensive Lexicon of Koine Greek available. I like how for almost every word, the lexicon gives you an extensive list of how this word is used in not only the New Testament, but in some of the Christian literature of the post New Testament era.

It gives you the tense and voice and mood of words, and whether or not a verb is used passively or actively in a given verse. This is the pinnacle textbook for those who are exegeting and parsing the New Testament.

The only caveat I have is with the price. But even at $140, this book is still essential for a richly rewarding study of the New Testament for advanced students. But if you live near a seminary library, you'd almost be farther ahead to use the copy in the reference section.

But if you live in the boonies like me, this book is something you should get. You may want to buy the CD-ROM Version, it is very intuitive and easy to use, and best of all, it is run on the proprietary Libronix Digital Library System, the fastest and most seamless software engine available.
Summary: The Standard for NT Greek
This by far is one of the best, if not thee best Greek NT lexicon available. Of course the 3rd edition adds to this monument of scholarly work. It is a bit time consuming to look for the words in Greek, but if God has put that hunger in your heart then press on. You will not be disappointed with the purchase. The other "Greek Lit." that is referenced is helpful, but if you want just NT references then buy the BAGD "Shorter Lexicon". Either way I pray that you continue in the path that the Lord has layed out before you. Seek the Lord with all your heart...lean not on your own understanding...He will make your paths straight...God Bless You.
Summary: Excellent Tool/Must compare with other lexicons
I actually use the BDAG 3rd Edition add on in BibleWorks 7.0 along with Kittel's TDNT and Spicq's Theological Lexicon book sets. In my software I have BDAG next to Thayer's, Liddell & Scott, Louw & Nida's Semantical Domain, United Bible Societies, and Friberg's Lexicon. I use all of them every week for sermon exegesis (except for Kittel's and Spicq's). BDAG is a great lexicon, maybe not the best...as some reviewers have said. It really depends on what you are studying. Louw & Nida's Semantical domain really helps one see the range of a word in context to other words, and BDAG doesn't do that. BDAG gives one a lot of information, but if you are not a trained scholar, it's hard to understand it all. So often I end up turning to other lexicons for more information.

There is a tendency with BDAG towards gender inclusivity in some entries, so if you are concerned about that issue, you may be happy or unhappy with that depending on your position. It's probably more accurate than the older editions, but I'm not an expert so I'm not really sure. Just know that is an issue and a reason why this lexicon should be compared with others.

Comparing this lexicon with other lexicons is super easy in the outstanding professional grade exegetical software called BibleWorks 6.0. (See my review there). With the pass of mouse, one can see all the lexicons on a word, with BDAG being just one of several. This allows constant comparison...and that's really the best way to use this lexicon in my opinion. When you do that over and over, week after week, month after month as I do, one gets the feel for this lexicon's strength. That strength is in providing good categories for a word, citing prime examples of each category, and a relatively fair approach in controversial issues.

A nice improvement has been hyperlinks that allow one to click on BDAG citations to see their fuller context in the program. I don't think I would get the book copy of this lexicon because the software version allows you to quickly paste an entry next to other lexicons in a word document and print them out for further ease of study and note taking. How easy is that with a printed copy of the lexicon?

With a program like BibleWorks 7.0 or their competitors one can search the lemma of a word instantly to see other instances of the use/form/stem which BDAG may not mention and get a graphical analysis of useage throughout various LXX/NT writers so you can assess the word in a more general way.

Overall, BDAG turns out to be very helpful in providing a base to chase down more information on the nuance of a word's meaning for certain situations/contexts. I cannot imagine doing exegesis without it. I would only recommend you stick the $140 bucks into software that has BDAG as an add-on. It's worth the extra money.

Summary: Using this book helps
It is an very good companion to a classroom setting, which I am currently enduring, especially with the ancillary exercises which are also essential. I do enjoy the extra detail & find that annotating the book makes classroom note taking unnecessary. It is very well organized: the E-G/G-E dictionaries are keyed to the chapters, & the index, with topics keyed to sections rather than pages, extremely helpful & thorough. When a new principal part is introduced, all principal parts of all previous verbs are reprinted. When the old brain is burned out, just reading the grammatical explanations is therapeutic. It would be nice to have the Greek passages double spaced or in a larger font, so that my work/glosses can be pencilled right into the text, but I doubt any publisher would spring for that. No doubt about it, learning Ancient Greek is tough, tough, tough, unless you have a hoover for a brain. Using this book (with a good prof) helps.
Summary: Less here than meets the eye
Groton has been our class textbook through Greek 100 and, so far, half of Gr 200. At the start we were very enthusiastic about it, especially those of us who learned Latin from Wheelock, but after a while.... The book is similar to Wheelock's Latin, but much less accessible. The layout is dreadful (particularly the appendices). Ms Groton tells us far more than we need (or want) to know about some things: digammas, thematic vowels, quantitative metathesis and so forth. But more importantly, the readings are inadequate and the exercises will drive you nuts: Is it really useful to know how to say "Either have I now made clear who the stranger is, or shall I also announce what name he has?"?

If you are using Groton, get the Ancillary Exercises as well. They're a big help. You might also get the Loeb Xenophon and try to read it with a lexicon. The point after all is to learn to read greek.

Summary: Looking forward to 4th Edition
As a first year Greek student I base my opinion of this text not on my expertise in the language but on my use of the text itself.

I have no complaints about the content of the text; it seems reasonably paced and thoughtfully developed.

My two critiques (I hope contructive in anticipation of the 4th edition)are thus:
1. The text still contains typos (including within the Greek paradigms) that I am surprised to find in a third edition.
2. The formatting of paradigm tables (particularly in the appendices) leaves something to be desired. The content is complete but they could be laid out better. I suspect that formatting has been compromised for the sake of space. My own opinion (speaking chiefly as a spreadsheet fanatic) is that it would be worth killing a few more papyri for the sake of tables that are intuitive to look at. I would gladly incur the necessary extra cost.

I recommend this text but sincerely hope a 4th edition is in the works.

Summary: GREAT book
I decided to buy Teach yourself greek because im going to greece this summer. I had previous experience with slavic languages so some greek letters were familiar and some were not. This book teaches you step to step greek. I study half an hour a day and what i found very useful was writing down the words from each chapter on separate paper and rereading them whenever i can, on the bus,train...etc. I am not using the cd because I am practicing my greek with a native which is very helpful because he can correct me in my pronounciation and grammar. I have to say something.... DEDICATION is a key to learning any language, and if you dont renew the language and you plan to read the book only once and understand all, you are wrong. I am fluent in 4 languages and it took me a long time to learn them, but i was dedicated and gave my all...not only glimpse through the chapters and learn how to count.... that is nonsense.

All in all this book is great, and i would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn greek...but remember... write down all the new stuff and reread and reread and reread :) good luck
Summary: A very handy guide!
This is a well-thought-out, clearly presented program. Especially welcome are the word-by-word "new vocabulary" sections. The tone is friendly, and the approach, gradual yet challenging.
Summary: Really helpful.
I have found this book & cd pack really helpful. I have a lot of experience learning languages by myself and since I was planning to visit Greece I have been into learning greek. (I've already come back and I plan to continue my studies). This book is really useful since it moves step by step. Every unit is about a certain topic and contains dialogs to introduce the new vocabulary in a progressive way. Then, you will find the necessary explanations in order to start speaking yourself. To check your progress, you will find lots of exercises (some written, some of listening comprehension) and you will really be practicing all the skills needed in language learning. Definitely, this is a book aimed at beginners, yet it is not a phrase book. And, if you are a grammar-based learner (like I am), I strongly recommend you to complement your studies with a greek grammar book, yet don't miss this one!

Summary: Middle school Latin
I am developing a 5th and 6th grade Latin program at my middle school, and I have been delighted with the Minimus books. The kids really seem to like them, and I appreciate the bright colors and easy to follow story line. I am supplementing with more of a traditional paradigm approach to learning the grammar, but the books provide a great launching point for discussion and reading that is much more fun than just sitting around memorizing verb endings. Some of the material is very British, so I have to explain some of the references to my kids, but other than that it is a wonderful curriculum.
Summary: Latin for fun
This is a very sound method to teach Latin to the younger crowd. Would be perfect for homeschooling families! The story, based on archaelogical digs in Vindolanda, near Hadrian's wall in Britain, is entertaining and very engaging, and the skills build up painlessly. Highly recommended! I use it with 5th graders, who are known to read stories ahead of the class!
Summary: Adult beginners may read this too!
Many books on "dead" languages are very dry (BORING). I recommend this book as a first book in latin even for adults. You can get through the entire book in a few days, and get a running start if you wish to go further in your studies. If you dont go further you will have read an interesting book. Everyone I have shared this book with realizes they too can do this latin thing. They want more. Notice there was a demand from the people reading volume I for the publisher to print a second simliar book.
No one book can teach you all of latin. If this book does nothing else but change latin from a thing other people do to something you do... well it has served its purpose.
Its worth the money. You will spend more than this on entertainment where you dont learn a thing. Buy the book!

Summary: Great value for the money
This book is much larger than I anticipated, beautiful condition, feel that I received way more than expected for my money.
Summary: Strongest Strong's Uses Solid Lexicography
Strongs number 430 (Hebrew) states in Strongest Strong's::

[elohim] n.pl.m. & f. GK:466 [--> 433 cf. 410]
"God (plural of majesty: plural in form but singular in meaning, with a focus on great power); gods (true grammatical plural); any person characterized by greatness or power: mighty one, great one, judge: [then gloss statistics and counts]

Strongs number 430 (Hebrew) in an edition of original Strong's (at least 30 years old)::
[elohim] plur. of 433;
"gods in the ordinary sense; but spec. used (in the plur. thus, esp. with the art.) of the supreme God; occasionally applied by way of deference to magistrates; and sometimes as a superlative:- [then gloss statistics]

Read both articles and decide if the two differ in substance.
Strongest Strong's is a solid, simple, glossary of terms. One should, even must, wade deeply into etymological studies before making linguistic pronouncments of what is, and is not, the true, "hidden" meaning.
Summary: Hard on the eyes
I received this concordance on 7/5/06 and I found it to be very informative. My true gripe with this edition is that it is very hard on the eyes. People with less than 20/20 vision will probably have a hard time viewing it. I plan to wait until they come out with a larger letter edition and repurchase it at that time.
