Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very nice book It is a comprehensive step by step book. I liked the fact that it also included alternative instructions for the instances when a Mac would have different commands. Summary: Good book, but not at all if you prepare for the exam The book was overall a good book with all what you need to know about Adobe Acrobat. I am preparing for the exam and the book does not cover 75% of the test. Unfortunately Adobe did not think of this and decided to make it very hard for us. Microsoft on the other hand has many books that cover the topics for their exams. Wish Adobe would learn that one thing from them.... Summary: Good book for beginners I found the tutorials easy to use and thought they taught how to use Acrobat very well. Some items may get repetitive if you have purchased other CS2 books, but I recommend it for anyone that purchases Adobe Acrobat CS2. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A must-read for tech leads and architects Martin Fowler is making a name for himself as a luminary in the area of Software Development. He writes very practical books that have a wonderful blend of theory (e.g. design patterns, UML, refactoring etc.) with experience as you can tell he has applied many if not all of these patterns in real-life projects. This book is an exposition into architectural building blocks that will help every architect and tech lead / senior developer build code that is more extensible and easily maintained (among other things). I found the chapters on O/R structural and behavioral patterns particularly enlightening. By reading this book your "toolbox" of solutions rapidly expands and you get to focus more on the business problem at hand rather than infrstructural "plumbing" things (e.g. how do I build my objects when my data is in a relational table). Very highly recommended - and definitely one of the top 5 software books I have *EVER* had the pleasure to read. Summary: Patterns for Business Applications I loved this book! It was exactly what I was looking for when I went searching for patterns that would help with a new business application. It provides alternative solutions to the typical implementation problems associated with business systems, both from a design standpoint and from the perspective of the implementation. The alternatives are compared and weighed in light of the execution environment and cost of implementation, with a comparison of advantages and disadvantages, along with Martin's recommendations. I had the feeling that the comparisons and recommendations were made not based purely upon a theoretical optimum, but also based upon practical and real-world experience with these patterns. Summary: Great Learning Resource If you are already well-versed in architectural patterns, you probably won't find much to interest you here. But if you are new to the subject, this is a great book. It goes beyond design patterns to show how to combine and implement the patterns in the real world. In particular, the 100-page tutorial that starts the book is a great intro to the subject. If I had to recommend two books to someone wanting to learn OOP, I'd recommend 'Head First Design Patterns', then this book. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great delivery response time. The item was shipped promptly and arrived in great condition. Thanks so much for the timely shipping, as the text was used for spring semester at school. Summary: I have not received the product yet I think the process is too slow. I have not received the product since I paid it a month ago. Since there's some statement says it would take 6 weeks, I will wait until that day. Summary: Good overview of SAD but not good for serious SAD study For beginners to Systems Analysis & Design I would recommend this textbook, however do not rely on this for a serious study of Systems Analysis & Design. This book is easy to read, but the "This technique is so great, note - there are some disadvantages" can get annoying at times. Maybe this book could be used as an overview of SAD for managers. Also, the Student Study Guide provided on CD-ROM with the text is not useful for quick review of the text for an exam as each chapter takes up 80 slides and each review of each chapter takes a while to read. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: GREAT MANUAL! This manual is awesome for all your mac needs. It really has so much detail and anyone can use it to fix most problems on their mac. It has really been useful since I purchased it about a month ago. Has really helped with startup issues (not that Macs have very many). And for general use, it contains great details about how to use OS X and the programs that come with it! Would definitely recommend for all Mac users, especially beginners! Summary: The Best Tiger Manual -- Stand up and applaud this book After reading this book, I felt like I had to stand up or at least applaud. It was really a masterpiece: extremely comprehensive, easy to understand, expertly organized. The missing manual series by O'Reilly claims to be "The book that should have been in the box." This book is to computer manuals what iPods are to digital music. Powerful, yet easy to use The book is designed for someone who has never used Tiger before and is not all that familiar with the Mac either. Unlike a dummies book, he doesn't talk down to you and respects the fact that you can learn things if shown how to use them. This book doesn't just cover Tiger, but also covers the iLife application suite: iMovie, iDVD and iTunes. In fact, I really don't consider this just a Tiger manual. It's really a iMac User's Guide, covering pretty much every aspect of your new Macintosh. Have a problem with your Mac not working right? There's a great troubleshooting section at the end of the book. The index and table of contents is well organized so you can focus on the sections you want to learn more about. For example, if you don't use classic applications (most people don't) then skip over the section. Finding out how to burn a music CD or setting up your email was very easy to find and understand. No aspect of Tiger was left unexplained. The book even explains how to use the voice recognition software..something I've never played with but always wanted to learn how to use Personally, I thought the coverage of Mac to PC and PC to Mac networking was great, since so many people live in mixed computing environments. The major complaint I think some people might have about this book is it's big. Over 800 pages can be a bit intimidating. I showed it to a customer and their response was: " I thought Macs were so easy to use?" Even though it is easy to understand and find the information you want, I wouldn't suggest it as the first manual to a new Mac user. I still think Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger: Peachpit Learning Series by Robin Williams is the best beginners book for Mac users. She really walks people through every step with bright colorful pictures. The ideal user of this book is someone who understands the basics of Tiger and their Mac but says "I don't think I'm using my Mac to it's full potential." After reading this book, they'll have a complete arsenal to understand any aspect of their Mac. Pros: The ideal book for Tiger users: complete, detailed, and easy to understand Cons: Not designed for brand new users with no previous Mac experience, the amount of information may seem overwhelming Summary: Good but not Great I recommend this book for most intermediate users but if you really want to everything, there isn't information here. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: "REAL DUMMIE" BEFORE..WITH THIS BOOK,MAKES A BEGINNER FEEL LESS LIKE A "DUMMIE" MY FIRST COMPUTER...(DID NOT HELP THAT THE COMPUTER WAS A LEMON, AND THE COMPANY REPLACED IT)I NOT ONLY DID NOT UNDERSTAND "COMPUTER" LANGUAGE, I DID NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO TURN IT OFF WITH OR WITHOUT POWER-BUTTON. ANY ONE WANTING TO KNOW "HOW TO" SHOULD GET THIS BOOK. LIKE IT SAYS..YOU DON'T SIT AND READ IT LIKE A NOVEL...YOU HAVE A QUESTION...YOU LOOK IT UP IN THE BOOK...NOW IF SOMEONE WOULD COME UP WITH A COMPUTER DICTIONARY FOR ALL THE TERMS ETC. USED IN "COMPUTER LANGUAGE"!!!! BUY THIS...YOU WON'T REGRET IT! Summary: Its not a teaching book. The book for the most part is having a discussion with you about Windows XP. Offering comments or critiques. It is not a book that I would recommend for learning via book. A Few areas actually go into depth. I see it as a PowerPoint presentation discussion about basics XP and should have been sold as. It lacked detail in networking and wireless needed for many user/owner issues. Summary: Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition As stated and well known to most, the "...For Dummies" series of books is aimed at beginners. That doesn't take away from the valuable information that is included in their send up of Windows XP and believe or not I still refer to it for it's other stated purpose - "a reference for the rest of us." Because of the nature and audience level of expertise, IT STILL IS a fantastic basic reference and I have used it to find broader subjects and to narrow my search in both my higher level references on XP - "Windows XP: The Missing Manual" and "Windows XP Inside Out Second Deluxe Edition". Using a computer and a new operating system is like riding a bike. The Dummies series are the ones to get when you still need training wheels on flat ground. It makes the basis of knowledge found in more advanced references (ones that are well written, anyway as the two I've mentioned)easier to understand and become proficient and confidentwith the subject matter at higher levels. I think the book is worth the cost when you're first starting out. John Row Summary: |

But if you want content and relative ease of understanding, it here. I've read better learning books, though. Summary: Recommended Being a long time Logic user, i still happen to not utilize the App to it's fullest. What I like about this book, is the Structure, with the chapters and the Tasks to fulfill. So it get's me closer to a streamlined workflow. Summary: Apple Logic Pro 7 Training Level 1 is Essential knowledge Very good for beginners, or more experienced users who are switching to Logic from another platform. The lessons are very basic, but they provide the backbone of how Logic works, and help speed up the workflow quickly. Recommended. Summary: |
| FileMaker Pro 8: The Missing Manual
Publisher: O'Reilly Media |

| ISBN: 0596005792 List Price: $34.95 Amazon Price: $22.02 Usually ships in 24 hours |
Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: VERY VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!! Are you a programmer that has been working with FileMaker for a while? If you are, then this book is for you! Authors Geoff Coffey and Susan Prosser, have done an outstanding job of writing a book that explores each feature in depth, offers shortcuts and workarounds, and explains the ramifications of options that a FileMaker Pro manual doesn't even mention. Coffey and Prosser, begin by exploring FileMaker Pro's interface; and, show you how to perform basic tasks, like entering data and then sorting through it again. Then, the authors show you how to use layouts to make data entry easier and how to create layouts that list and summarize your data. They continue by showing you how to create, connect, and manage multiple tables and how to set up complex relationships that show you just the data you need to see. Next, the authors show you how to use FileMaker Pro's 200+ functions to do the math for you. Then, they show you how scripting works, and learn how to make scripts for people to use. Finally, the authors show you how to protect your database with a password and how to use privileges to determine what folks can do once they get into your database. FileMaker Pro comes in several flavors, and this excellent book addresses them all. Each chapter contains live examples--step-by-step tutorials that help you learn how to build a database by actually doing it! Summary: The only book you will need to learn FileMaker Pro! I have developed many database applications in other software programs. FileMaker is quite different from the rest, so I had to learn "by the book" to understand many of Filemaker's unique features, so I purchased Filemaker Pro 7 Bible and Using Filemaker Pro 7. The Bible book was totally useless, giving you details for beginners and lots of useless text for someone who already understands database development. The Using books gives details, both not a straight forward approach to developing a database. But once FileMaker Pro 8: The Missing Manual came out (the first to cover version 8), I purchased it. To my surprise, it was so well written and loaded with practical advise, that I have read to book from end to end. It has excellent examples that I have used in the application I am developing for my company. I continually go back to the book for refreshers to concepts I learned in the book. The other two books hardly get touched! If there is one book to buy to learn FileMaker Pro, this is it! Summary: FileMaker Pro8 Touted as the "missing manual" I was expecting good guidance on concrete applications. I bought the software with the primary intent of converting various large Excel files into a database. The manual is large on theory and small on concrete help. My efforts to convert Excel files failed so often that I finally gave up trying. The book was of no help. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Quick way to learn SQL An experienced SAS programmer, I used the many helpful examples in this book to learn a lot about PROC SQL in just a few days. (I skipped the text.) I trust the few typos and obscure passages will be cleared up in a subsequent edition. I thought the sections on normalization and integrity constraints were skimpy. The book has also been favorably reviewed in The American Statistician 2005, vol. 59, no. 4, pp. 350 Summary: Complete, but the good stuff is at the back It is well written and complete, but despite the title, spends too much time on the basics.
