Summary: The Inappropriateness of Myths for Adults
Hillman is a provocative author with many keen insights, but not unlike many psychologists in the Jungian tradition, he cannot refrain from the use of Myths. I deliberately capitalized the word Myth, because it more often than not is the problem, not the resource to resolution. Don't misunderstand me! Myths have figured heavily in all civilizations for their power to "see" something that is often otherwise not apparent. Moreover, myths are the backbone of civilizing humanity, telling stories, usually morality tales, that provide an insight that more direct discourse and narrative cannot capture. These Myths have a limited use, primarily for children, whose immaginations are charged by the peculiarity of the story, and through that peculiarity perceive a "truth" about life. Aesop's fables are perhaps paradigmatic, but other Myths exist too.

But as we enter the 21st C., isn't it time to limit the use of Myths for their pedagogical uses with children, and strip our adult minds of those Myths that have taken hold and twisted our sense of things. The most notable Myth in Western Civilization has been the Bible. The ironic twist about these particular Myths is that they are no longer pedagogical, but have become polemical. And I am far from confident that most of those Myths are innocent or benign. They no longer tell a story or morality tale, but in many people have become the Standard by which to measure all of life. And because the Myth transforms into religion, it often takes hold of people as though the stories are literally true, rather than metaphorically provocative. Instead of understanding a God of love and compassion, one encounters Yahweh whose jealousy and wrath are staples. And instead of perceiving "God" as the Energy that pervades the universe, its conception is of an anthropromorphic Deity, who caps things off by becoming human.

The point of all this is that Myths that go beyond mere stories and are transformed into "reality," often cause more damage than good. This is true both for the individual who maps out the world not as it is, but how a nomadic tribe millennia ago saw things. New tribes have arisen, but they tell the same unintelligible Myths. People even go to war over these Myths.

Thus, Hillman's use of the "acorn" is nowhere near that kind of Myth, but it perpetuates the Myth that only metaphors and stories can explain ourselves. So one Myth is substituted for another, denying all coherence to ourselves and others. That's what Myths do. And so we delude ourselves into thinking that only another Myth can overcome previous ones. At some point, we have to stop the endless progression of Myths and grab onto reality and face it head on. Myths not only do not do that, they prevent that from happening by their very nature.

Hillman's use of Myth is meant to be a "tool," but like many a tool it often becomes part of some larger apparatus like the person who uses it. Saint Paul said when he became an adult he put away childish things. And I suggest that using one Myth to see ourselves out of another Myth still keeps us in Myths. We persist in using childish tools, when only adult ones ultimately work. What was originally only a vehicle for insight inheres to our being and becomes the prism through which we view life. Hillman's "acorn" Myth is definitely useful, but as adults it's time to put away childish tools and start confronting life as adults. Instead of trying to "see" ourselves as we are, and for who we are, we hoist a new Myth to take on for changing our perception. We "see" the world through "Jungian" glasses, for example, rather than through the ones we should have formed.

At its most challenging reward, introspection and self-analysis require we face ourselves as we are, stripped of all the stories we have adopted as "our life." Only then can we find what we are searching for, and then begin to make sense of it.
Summary: Nurturing your own potential
A memorable book offering concepts that inspire and empower. I love the notion of a daimon that we carry within each of us. It brings awareness on nurturing our own greatest potential as well as those in the youth around us.
Summary: Missing the point
I chose not to finish the book, because I lost track what the message was supposed to be. I don't understand why authors decide to fill hundreds of pages and the quintessence is missing, instead of keeping it lean and to the point. Less can be more, but maybe the conclusion was revealed after I stopped reading......

Summary: Comprehensive, Useable, and Readable
The book was a long read and made some challenging conclusions but provided me with specific, valuable knowledge in serious construction scheduling topics such as extension of time claims and time impact analysis. The examples included are many as are the case studies. The book opened my mind as to the significant capability the construction schedule can have on making or breaking the profitablility of a compressed project or one that is prone to delays. The book is a must read for consultants on the matter but also important to senior project controls staff.

Summary: a beautiful book full of heart
In this, one of Hillman's best books, he rewrites two talks as essays, both of which revisualize the literal blood pump in the chest as the metaphorical place where imagination begins and image connects consciousness and world.

To hear that world and the soul which animates it (for soul isn't just locked up in the head or body), we must dwell on its specifics. Here are some illustrative quotations:

My practice tells me I can no longer distinguish clearly between neurosis of self and neurosis of world, psychopathology of self and psychopathology of world. Moreover, it tells me that to place neurosis and psychopathology solely in personal reality is a delusional repression of what is actually, realistically, being experienced.

The world, because of its breakdown, is entering a new moment of consciousness: by drawing attention to itself by means of its symptoms, it is becoming aware of itself as a psychic reality.

Let us imagine the anima mundi [world soul] neither above the world encircling it as a divine and remote emanation of spirit, a world of powers, archetypes, and principles transcendent to things, nor within the material world as its unifying panpsychic life-principle. Rather let us imagine the anima mundi as that particular soul-spark, that seminal image, which offers itself through each thing in its visible form.

Summary: very capable casebook
The two previous reviewers of this casebook were probably both right about it - on one hand, it is an excellent guide for covering difficult material if someone is able to glean the broader meaning from the cases through self study. To some extent, that's part of the law school experience for better or worse. On the other hand, this book could have made that process easier, as one reviewer noted.

The cases and discussion, though, are quite interesting and are appropriately edited to focus on the important material. There are far worse casebooks in general use in law school, so I'd put this one towards the top of my limited experience.

That said, this casebook coupled with Hillman's Hornbook (blue paperback) would be an OUTSTANDING way to tackle a moderately difficult subject. I did that and I learned a ton from them as a combined resource. Either one alone just won't be sufficient.
Summary: Incredible Case Book
This was the best law case book I've ever used. If you want the law spoon fed to you, yes, this book is a difficult tool. Professors Summers and Hillman, however, are firm believers that the best way to teach the law is by motivating the students to teach themselves. Their approach with this book is thought-provoking, thorough, and, yes, challenging. If you want an easy read, use a commercial outline. The law, however, is not supposed to be easy. You are supposed to wrangle with every word, to challenge every opinion, and search why the judges' reasoning is faulty. Professors Summers and Hillman triumph mightily with their text. Their holistic approach to teaching contracts is, undoubtedly, revolutionary. Much like Lon Fuller's text Basic Contract Law, it is a departure from the normal format. In fact, you won't find Hawkins v. McGee anywhere in the book, save for a footnote. If you are lucky enough to use this casebook, take advantage of it, and the incredible learning opportunity it presents. By the end of the course, you will have a view of the entire forest, to use the oft-used metaphor, as well as an in-depth understanding of each tree.
Summary: Worst case book I had in law school
They don't get much worse than this. The book is worthless, and made Contracts almost impossible to understand. The cases are sliced into strange, sometimes tiny portions, making it hard to elucidate anything from them. Compounding this problem, the authors themselves give nothing in the way of guidance before cases, not even a couple of lines to explain cases or put them in perspective. This is the only case book I have had that gives so little guidance in digesting cases or the general material. Essentially, the authors slapped together some articles and case excerpts without adding anything themselves. There are NO endnotes whatsoever.

Additionally, the book is filled with long excepts of law review articles which you can't understand or appreciate. It is pretty tough to learn any legal subject as a 1L from law review articles.

Basically, with this book you are thrown in the ocean and have to swim to shore yourself. If your professor uses this text, I recommend trying to move to a different section.

Summary: Good
The book was in really good condition, although I did not recieve my book on time. Thanks.
Summary: Curtis shares his experience and gives pointers
I have read the Process and Inspiration sections thus far and Curtis gives helpful advice in how to succeed in media design.
Summary: A must-read for aspiring designers
As a design student, I was recommended to read this book by numerous friends of mine who have graduated from the program. I am a second-year student without a lot of real-world design experience, and reading this book still hit very close to home.

This book is divided into three sections: process, inspiration and practice. The first section, process, outlines the way that Curtis has learned to relate to clients. His writing style is well organized and his voice is easy to follow. He uses personal stories as a way to connect to the reader rather than using "design-speak".

The second section, inspiration, is a visual showcase of some of the people who inspire the author, and some of their strongest works. Many of these are motion pieces, so translating them to print poses a slight challenge. Curtis selects multiple frames from each piece that are representative of the story being told, and lays them out in a way that still conveys the meaning of the piece, making sure to describe the action that occurs so that the reader is as informed as possible without actually being able to view the piece.

The final section, practice, is more of a tool to the new designer than to those with more experience. It is a guide to the ins and outs of design from a basic html overview to the usage of a grid in print design. For this section, Curtis invites other professionals that he considers experts in their respective fields to write individual essays. He provides this as a response to the lack of basic design literature that he ran into when he started designing many years ago.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The third section in particular seems geared toward younger designers, but anyone in a creative field would be able to gain from the client interaction guidelines listed in the process section or the imagery and ideas in the inspiration section. I highly recommend it to anyone.

If you work for hematology, this book is so nice to learn the basic line. I think the way of learning the basic line is the most important part for the medical students and residents. Of course, you must learn the latest things more with the internet. Sometimes this book is not enough for you, but with internet, it is quite enough.

Summary: Excellent supplement to the Hillman/Summers Casebook
This hornbook makes reading the case book very, very easy. It summarizes all of the concepts from their textbook in a simple and concise manner. I highly recommend reading this book and staying a few pages ahead of your assigned text reading.
Summary: Excellent prepatory book
I bought this and used it heavily through Contracts, and found it took be a very good supplement to the casebook. It covers the main issues in very good detail, but cannot be trusted as a single source for contract law of course - a short book could not be expected to do that.

The book is written in an informal but very information way, and cites many of the popular cases that will presumably exist in your casebook.

That said, if someone read this book before starting contracts, or read each chapter before reading cases relating to the material in that chapter, you'd probably get a more complete and faster comprehension of the material. This book is great for that purpose.
Summary: Good
Good study aid. He didn't cover some topics iwith the same detail as my professor, but what he does cover is presented in a concise and clear manner. I also enjoyed his perspective on contract law, for example the way he organizes the material and the examples he uses to present the ideas. Overall I'm glad I read this as part of my exam preparation.

Summary: thought-provoking for leadership wonks
One my most-recommended books whenever discussions about "leadership" or "control" go sideways. Flawed, but discerning readers can extract real-life applications of the models and metaphors herein. Worthy of updating and reissuing with a new market positioning that will expand its audience beyond psychoanalytical circles.
Summary: Power corrupts, or does it?
James Hillman is often thought of as a demanding and difficult writer -- in need of being "popularized" by someone like Thomas Moore ("Care of the Soul") to reach a wider audience. And there may be some truth to this, but Hillman can also be remarkably accessible, as in this thought-provoking book on the "intelligent uses" of power.

We may think that power needs no explanation. It is what it is. But, as Hillman points out, that belief gives it unconscoius power over us. Never examining power, we do not see the many ways it permeates our daily lives, influencing our behavior and our choices. If we think of power as "force," we do not appreciate its subtler uses, e.g., influence, authority, or energy, and we do not see that problems about power may have a wide array of solutions.

Hillman is fascinated by words, because words represent ideas; embedded in words are the entire histories of ideas. He is also fascinated by the process of "entertaining" ideas, and this book is a record of one brilliant and mercurial mind entertaining the idea of power, examining the many ways we can look at it (he devotes a chapter to each of 24 "kinds of power"), as well as the way its various meanings govern how we see the world around us. For instance, ideas about power lead individuals or groups of people to regard themselves as disempowered (victims); ideas about power may underlie the desire to own guns.

Because economic power rules the lives of almost everyone (yet another idea about power), Hillman directs his book to anyone involved with businesss. And he means business in the broadest sense of that word -- anyone whose life is structured by the getting and spending of money. Looking into mythology for insights into the psychology of power, he opens up this subject as therapist and patient might do in a series of 50-minute sessions. It's not a how-to book, but rather a journey, taking the reader across a landscape (both personal and collective) that offers many new and freeing perspectives.

Summary: a clever study
Other reviewers have touched on the positive aspects of Hillman's book. It is a nice study of power and its intricacies from a depth-psychological, multidisciplinary, poetic perspective. A reader new to Hillman won't find this work as technical as others (e.g., Re-Visioning Psychology).

As someone who worked in Corporate America for 15 years, I feel uncomfortable with psychologizing repetition, control, leadership, etc. without giving due emphasis to the enormously widespread pain and suffering these cause to those of us subjected to them by bosses who belong in daily therapy but are too narcissistic to ever go there. It's very nice to link up repetition with a deep need to polish, or to give a nod to the "born" leader--but unless we also emphasize the shadow side of these states and qualities, they all get taken right to the bank. I must say I'm glad that some of the people I've had to report to never came across this book; they'd have used it as an excuse to be MORE controlling, intrusive, demanding, and downright tyrannical.

I can't quite figure out why Hillman wrote this book. His nod to people in business, maybe? An attempt to explain a bit of psychology to them? Surprising to see the Nietzsche of depth psychology offering so many of what look like justifications for precisely the kind of corporate behavior that drives people into stress disabilities and two of my own colleagues into suicide.
