Summary: Richard Avedon Woman In The Mirror
This latest by our recently departed R.A. ( I cried like a little girl when he died) is one of his best. With images in his beloved black and white but also rare color that I've never seen before the book is a classic portryal of Avedon's images of women. Dovima with elephants, Suzy Parker, Rose Kennedy, the most erotic image of Stephanie Seymour ever. The color images of Nadja with a skeleton in fashion images that will stay with you for ages, this book is a fantastic portfolio of Americas greatest photographer,( ok Irving Penn & Avedon share that title). If you were not in on Made In France,(which is now a $1500.00 book )get this one it has more substance aside from the beautiful design of MIF. I miss Avedon and this book brought some memory of his brilliant approach to photography once again.
Summary: Avedon's Last Gasp
Avedon's last book. He died in October 2004. This is a beautiful collection, all are full-page and a few double-page spreads. Many are fashion pieces, but a number are of the famous, including a wonderful Janis Joplin!

The essay by Ms. Hollander starts a bit slow, but once up to speed
provides some interesting insights. A fyne, hefty tome worth the bucks.
Summary: Female in the lens
Richard Avedon selected a portfolio of women he has photographed over the last 60 years for "Woman in the Mirror.". Here are 125 images ranging from 1946 (Zazi, a street performer in Rome) to 2004, the year Avedon died. Some of the images have been published but many have not. The majority of photos are from Avedon's career as a fashion photographer - familiar faces like Dorian Leigh, Dovina, Jean Shrimpton, Penelope Tree and Suzy Parker (who is featured on the cover). Women from other walks of life are featured as well - actresses (Katharine Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Tilda Swinton, Marilyn Monroe), writers (Isak Dinesen, Marguerite Duras, Renata Adler), singers (Tina, Turner, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Maria Callas) and many more. And there's also Elton John in drag! Fifteen pages are reproductions from a "photographic fable" titled "In Memory of the Late Mr. and Mrs. Comfort" (1995) which features models in bizarre poses with skeletons. An essay by Anne Hollander covers the career of this fascinating photographer.

Summary: Worst_book
This book starts off with naive examples to illustrate the point. The illustrations were so childy that make it so rudiculous to read and understand it. Later in the book, the explanations get complicated and vague which confuses readers. Some chapters are more than 50 pages long and after you have read it, you will be more confuse than ever.I am a student and need to read a lot of books. This is by far the worst book I have ever read.
Summary: Confusing Content
This book is not well organized, the content is confusing and messed up, for a student the book talked too much on virtual and vague concept with out well explained , on the other hand the verbose description some times make you thinking, : " WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?"
Summary: Neither fish nor fowl
I was a student in a college course that used this textbook. I'm happy that I earned the credits for it but not much else. This is a dismal textbook, plain and simple. It starts in chapter 1 where the authors engage in a lofty praise of reengineering. The fact that many reengineering projects did not accomplish the desired results does not even get mentioned by the authors. So much for their research! The rest of the book chiefly focuses on the description of a database based upon the various business processes. The examples show a very complex database. However, the information provided in the book would not be sufficient to design a similar one from scratch. Overall, this book focuses way too much on an academic view of business with little relation to the real world.

Summary: revision of classical on nonparametric methods
In the 1970s this text became a classic on the subject of nonparametric methods. It was written for practitioners and students. It is introductory and comprehensive. It describes the methods accurately but does not cover the theory. Later Randles and Wolfe wrote a companion book covering the theory. This revision is much larger and covers the many advances over the past 20 years. It covers bootstrap methods as well. Also computational advances are discussed.

Conover's "Practical Nonparametric Statistics" is another fine book for practitioners. I also recommend Lehmann's book on nonparametrics. It was published in 1975 and is not easy to find these days.

Summary: An excellent, encyclopediac approach
This is an excellent book on a somewhat underutilized group of statistical techniques. It could be used for a course in nonparametric statistics at the graduate level in Psychology or the social sciences, although I don't think the whole book could be covered in a semester.

It is perhaps more valuable as a reference for the practicing data analyst. Because of the format, it is relatively easy to find a procedure that does what you want. There are 11 chapters, the first of which is an introduction, and the others each cover one type of problem (e.g. the one-sample location problem). Within each chapter are a variety of procedures, each of which is discussed in the same format: Procedure, large-sample approximation, ties, example, comments, properties and problems.

In addition, there are close to 200 pages of tables, many of which I haven't seen elsewhere.

Overall, highly recommended for anyone who needs to use or teach these techniques.

Summary: A SUPERB Introduction- bound to be a Stat Classic
I found this book to be very helpful and it required minimal interpretation from academia to understand. More so for the practicioner than the theoretician.

Summary: THE Textbook for Hospitalists
This is a great overview of the vast subject that is inpatient internal medicine. The young specialty of hospitalist is one that has needed its own dedicated text for some time. This second edition is definately it. While there is still some slight fine tuning to be done, Dr. Wachter continues to do great work for us as the Father of the Hospitalist Revolution that is occuring.
It goes without saying that Hospital Medicine is essential to the library of every Hospitalist, but should also be required reading by all Internists, FPs, and IM residents. This book brings together the various aspects of inpatient medcine from nutrition to the business of medicine to procedures and perioperative care. There are also very nice sections on critical care and cardiovascular disease as well as the vital role of consultation. My highest reccomendation.
Summary: Outstanding Book
An excellent reference for the physician who cares for hospitalized patients. Just enough detail to care for patients of every severity and type of illness, yet not so much that you are bogged down in unimportant trivia and esoteric controversies. The book is up to date, and the authors obviously know their stuff. Things like indications for ICU admission and indications for discharge make this book invaluable for physicians who care for hospitalized patients. Now if only someone will write a similar one for pediatrics....
Summary: great ref
awesome book...has flow charts for treatment...etc...

one big neg..no pathophys... see medicine: the true explanation by Dr. V. Shinde.

Summary: Stranded On A Desert Island? Take These 2 Volumes Along!
Someone once asked me, if I were stranded on a desert island, and could have one book with me, which would I choose? Easy answer - "The Oxford Anthology of English Literature." Actually, it's a two volume set - but I am designating the two volumes as one book, for desert island convenience.

This extraordinary 4,500 page collection contains Great Britain's finest literature from the Middle Ages through the 20th century. Included are selections from "Beowulf," Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales," works by Spenser (excerpts from all books of "The Faerie Queene"), Sir Thomas Malory, Shakespeare (including "The Tempest'), Marlowe ("Dr. Faustus," "Hero and Leander"), John Donne, and Milton. There are over 100 pages devoted to William Blake, including "The Book of Thel," and the entire "Night the Ninth" from "The Four Zoas." It also contains poems and prose by Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Shelley, and Byron. And this is just a small sample.

In addition to the general editors Frank Kermode and John Hollander, the anthology has been edited and annotated by Harold Bloom, Martin Price, J.B. Trapp, and Lionel Trilling. The editors contribute brief period introductions, biographical and critical pieces for major authors, and essays preceding the major selections.

There are almost 300 wonderful illustrations included in the collection, representing important artists and their works for each period, that demonstrate the relationship between literary and visual images.

I have read through this wonderful anthology many times over the years, and never fail to learn something new, something to excite my imagination, with each reading. Highest Kudos!
JANA

Summary: This is the one
I still have my incredibly beloved and beat-up copy from college days at Syracuse University; along with my "Complete Works of Shakespeare" (ed. Bevington)and Lumiansky's translation of "Canterbury Tales," this is one of those books I'll NEVER let go; if I had it with me on a desert island, I wouldn't mind being alone for a few years. It's got everything you could ask for from English lit., with excellent footnotes and introductory materials. A real treasure trove, and a must for anyone who really wants to start digging into the major Western writers -- yeah, those dead white guys; not so popular anymore -- just the ones who hold up the pillars of Western civilization!

Summary: Not particularly useful
Bit too witty to learn anything. The author is too busy being cute to explain anything very well. Also, only marking stressed syllables only does half of the job of scansion; marking both stressed and unstressed syllables provides a complete visual aid for discerning meter. Add to that the author's party-line views on free verse and you have a rather lame book. Consider this a book-length version of Coleridge's horrible little piece on meter. Timothy Steele's All the Fun's in how you Say a Thing is much better.
Summary: Proves that rhyme can still be relevant
This is a clever and masterful book. The author demolishes the new fashional nonsense about rhyme being creatively passe. Rhyme is not necessarily restrictive or formulaic. It can still be powerful, enjoyable and richly expressive.
Summary: Wow! I am so glad I have this
I can hardly contain myself. After reading through several books about how to write poetry I came to this one. Though I am almost jumping for joy, I have a soupcon of sadness, because I wish I had started here. Hollander's book is like a good poem: concise, entertaining, and ultimately full of wisdom. Just compare Hollander's examples on forms (in the forms!) to the lackluster examples in The Book of Forms by Lewis Turco.

Don't be fooled by the title. This book is about all aspects of poetry, including free verse (and even 'concrete' poems). While Rhyme's Reason has a smaller selection of forms than The Book of Forms and a shorter discussion of prosody than All the Fun's in How You Say a Thing, it had more than enough meat for me. And I can unhesitatingly recommend it for first forays into the appreciation and composition of poetry. Make sure to get the Third Edition, of the year 2000, which has a few added goodies. Enjoy!

Summary: An excellent companion to The Black Book of Communism
But unlike the Black Book, which derives most of its information from recently accessible Soviet archives and other sources, this emotionally charged tome relies on the accounts of victims themselves, which makes it even more damning in my view. This book should convince many that Communism in practice is every bit as murderous as its rival totalitarian ideology Fascism, which is considered the epitome of political evil.

Several of the contributions are well known, such as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich" (USSR), Eugenia Ginzburg's "Journey into the Whirlwind" (USSR), Harry Wu's "Bitter Winds" (China) and Armando Valladares "Against All Hope" (Cuba). Some I myself have not heard of, such as Venko Markowski's "Goli Otok: Island of Death" (Yugoslavia) and Nika Stajka's "The Last Days of Freedom" (Albania). Others have been out of print for some time, such as Bao Ruo-wang's "Prisoner of Mao" (China). In all there are 45 different horror stories in this book that will keep you up at night.

The shocking details of humiliation and suffering in these personal accounts makes the book a more difficult read than the aforementioned Black Book, which for the most part is written in a fairly dry, scholarly tone as it recounts the numbers repressed and killed in various Communist dictatorships. Clearly numbers alone, and we're talking tens of millions, don't tell the full story. We learn firsthand that Khmer Rouge soldiers occasionally sliced open the bellies of pregnant women, in front of terrified spectators, and ripped the fetuses from them. In Castro's Cuba dissidents are subjected to horrific abuse in psychiatric prisons (similar abuse happened in the USSR, China and Romania). In Mengistu's Ethiopia during the "Red Terror," bullet-ridden bodies of men, women and even high school students were left lying in the streets or publicly displayed. In Enver Hoxha's Albania prisoners at the Nizhaveci camp were tormented and ultimately drowned in muddy swamps filled with leeches. In Nicaragua under the Sandinistas prisoners were subjected to brutal beatings during interrogation, mock executions, believable death threats against family members, food and water deprivation and extremely harsh conditions of confinement. And in North Korea's prison camps public executions by hanging and firing squad (often of inmates attempting to escape) are commonplace.

Clearly these selections from victims all over the world prove that repression and terror, with varying degrees of severity, were common practices in all Communist states.

The book opens with a thoughtful Foreword from Anne Applebaum and an absolutely brilliant 64-page introductory essay by Editor Paul Hollander. It rivals and perhaps surpasses Stephane Courtois's excellent (yet controversial in some circles) introduction to The Black Book of Communism. He hits the nail on the head again and again. He rightly tells us that while the mass murders of Hitler's National Socialists have stimulated a huge and continued outpouring of righteous indignation and hand wringing, the similar mass murders of Communist rulers such as Josef Stalin and Pol Pot have inspired little corresponding concern. Indeed, it seems that history's most prolific killer, Chinese Red Emperor Mao Tse-tung, has a better reputation amongst the cultural elites than does Ronald Reagan. And Ernesto "Che" Guevara, Castro's ruthless henchman who authorized hundreds of executions at La Cabana prison and sometimes participated in the killings himself, has become a pop culture phenomenon. T-shirts emblazoned with his "romantic" image are available in trendy shops at your local shopping mall. Could you imagine a t-shirt featuring General Pinochet's likeness being sold anywhere?

Hollander points out that left-wing intellectuals like Noam Chomsky and revisionist historians such as J. Arch Getty (his 1985 book "Origins of the Great Purges" attempted to minimize the numbers killed in Stalin's Great Terror to mere "thousands" and portrayed Stalin not as an instigator of this horrendous bloodbath, but as a moderator in a bureaucratic turf war who was forced to authorize mass executions. The now accessible Soviet archives have proven him dead wrong on both counts. Applebaum rightly states in her Foreword that the archives "have established that the victims numbered in the millions, not the thousands.") coldly dismissed defectors and refugees accounts of Communist atrocities and deplored them being used in historical works. Recently, New York Times correspondent Nicholas Kristof was greatly skeptical of "uncorroborated reports" from survivors of North Korea's concentration camps, which are arguably some of the most inhumane in the world today. Yet it seems that memoirs and accounts by survivors and exiles of right-wing regimes are treated as gospel truth. Who, for instance, has questioned the truthfulness of Elie Wiesel, Nelson Mandela or Ariel Dorfman? Who would dare take someone to task for exaggerating the "horrors" of the McCarthy era besides perhaps a right-wing conservative pundit like Ann Coulter?

Even the most blatant apologists for Josef Stalin, such as Eric Hobsbawm, who boasted that the mass murder of 20 million people would have been totally justified had the great socialist utopia been realized, still enjoy an excellent moral and intellectual reputation in Western academic circles. One of the most disgusting apologists for this mass murderer, Grover Furr, who argues that good ole Uncle Joe was really an advocate of democracy, is a tenured English professor at Montclair State University. By contrast many of Hitler's apologists, like David Irving, Ernst Zundel and Germar Rudolf, are rotting inside prison cells in various social "democratic" European countries for the crime of "Holocaust denial." I could go on with these double standards forever it seems.

I'm sure some might be reluctant to purchase a book with contributions they've read elsewhere, especially Solzhenitsyn's popular "One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich." But as I mentioned earlier there are many here almost unheard of and others long out of print. The introduction alone is almost worth the price of the book! This is an absolute must have, especially for those who enjoyed The Black Book of Communism.

Summary: CAPTURING THE MYTH, MERRIMENT AND MADNESS
The finest collection of photographs ever put together around the Pamplona Fiesta. My first was in 1959 when I accidentally met Ernest Hemingway. I had just backpacked through Tunisia to find a German mountain fortress that had stopped the Allies during WW2. Hemingway knew about it and invited me to join his group. Many years after his death I wrote of that period and all that followed in "Hemingway's Paris and Pamplona, Then and Now."

No other photobook has so dramatically pictured all of the drama that brought Hemingway back to Pamplona time and again to the very end. The essence of why it did is captured in the fine photographs on these pages.

Seeing this collection for himself, Hem would have shouted OL!
Summary: Captures The Magic
The Fiesta of San Fermin is flat out the greatest festival in the world. It has excitement, joy, and fellowship. Many arrange their lives around their return. Fiesta has more aspects and flavors than can be savored in one year. Each return brings more enrichment, depth, and opportunity.

I speak from personal experience. I have not missed a day for over 25 years. Although slower, I still run with the bulls at every opportunity.

Jim Hollander is a world-class photographer who has drunk deep. He has known Fiesta for many years. In this book, he captures reflections of the magic that is Fiesta. His images capture excitement, joy, diversity, emotion, and the people. This book is the best possible introduction to Fiesta. It is also the best way to remember for those who have been there.

Summary: Run to the sun
Dear Sirs,
I am a veteran press photographer with over 30 years experience. I have also been to Pamplona and ran with the bulls.
I am a good photographer , Hollander is not. Jim Hollander is a great photographer.
This is the best book I have ever seen on the Festival and all it's glories.
