Summary: Red Hat Fedora Core 5 Unleashed Review
Fedora Core 5 was released in March of 2006 so getting this book to press in June was a huge undertaking and the author's have done an excellent job of including tons of information into this book. The Step-by-Step installation chapters include screen shots of the whole process. These are always a great addition to any instructional book.

Post installation configuration includes information on configuring keyboards and mice which is done during the installation process and shouldn't need to be repeated unless the user changes something.

Additional screen shots are used throughout the book which add the connection between the material talked about in the book and what the user sees on the screen.

This book refers to several excellent applications (pirut, yumex) which are a part of Fedora Core 5 but not shown in the Menu's by default.

Although this book attempts to bring the history of Linux, Step-by-Step installation, a plethora of information for beginners and experienced user alike. I don't believe a beginner would be able to use this book as a guide. The heavy use of computer industry acronyms would only serve to confuse the beginner.

This book should definitely be purchased by experienced computer users who want to break into the daily use of Linux and experienced Linux users as a resource for troubleshooting and configuration.

An overall excellent resource for every Linux enthusiasts bookshelf.
Summary: Great book.
As with the other books of the "Unleashed" series, this book does not disappoint. From installation through recompiling the kernel, each chapter gives clear and concise instructions. Great for beginners and those already familiar with linux. If you want to learn the basics and beyond with one of the best open source distributions, this book is the one. Comes with a DVD packed with programs.

Summary: Not a reference but a walk though book
I didn't find this book useful for finding what I'm looking for fast. Commands and Linux Topics are scattered about the book in different section. The directory and index had little use for finding what I'm looking for, a quick web search turned up faster focused results. This book touches the surface in order to get a novice going but thats about it.
Summary: linux informative
This is a good book for the linux "newbie" or someone who is famaliar with other flavors of linux and want to brush up on this new version of Fedora. The book gets really in depth but I realized that everything I was looking for was already self explanatory on the desktop. The core linux command line stuff isn't there but you should buy a book that contains that information before tackling a server build first anyway.

Final point: If looking for basic linux command line information, buy a linux command line book.

If looking to learn the new points of Fedora Core 4 buy this book but play with the "GUI" and you'll figure it out in 10 minutes.
Summary: Unleashed books still the best!
just wanted to say how impressed I have been with the Unleashed series of books, I worked on an old Linux unleashed book years ago and lately I have been training SuSE and RedHat courses for a Novell platinum partner training company in South Africa, I have tried other books like the SuSE bible and have not been very satisfied since they are not comprehensive enough. I bought your book on Fedora 4 unleashed the other day and am pleased to say that it is still the same quality, easy to read and very comprehensive, that is why I recommend the unleashed series of books as the first choice to all my students. When you are in a training environment and you sometimes have very little time to prep a new course, having a book like this take a lot of pressure off you.

Summary: Not bad at all...
I had the pleasure of reading The $64 Tomato by William Alexander this week. It was a very quick read and enjoyable. Basically, it is the story of a man who buys a run down house with a huge yard. He has always gardened and took this as an opportunity to really delve into it. He hires a couple to design and build a huge garden at quite a price. The resulting garden is massive but not without it's problems. For some reason the designer said that the terraces had to be rectangular and for some reason the author believed her. As a result, the garden didn't quite have the feel he was going for. Actually, it seemed to be a running theme that the author hired people who either had a lackadaisical attitude towards work or just plain bizarre. He also seemed to have a hard time being forceful or direct with the people he hired (at great financial cost) which to me seemed an odd way for an adult to behave. For someone who was so into his house/garden, he didn't seem to do much research before say, cutting down the pipes for the irrigation system to make them more attractive or whole rectangular terrace thing.

That being said, the book was fairly well written and entertaining. I find many house/garden memoirs to be poorly written or dull, possibly because the authors are not trained writers. While some of his phrasing was awkward, he kept a brisk pace and gave enough details to keep you interested with out overwhelming you with minutiae. He broke up the gardening stories with little glimpses into his family life which were, for the most part, interesting. His wife and children had a completely different approach to gardening, more casual, less obsessive than he did. Which isn't to say they were entirely disinterested. His daughter haughtily informed him at one point that corn is really only good when it is cooked minutes after it was picked.

One thing I found odd about the book was how vague the time line was. At the end of the book it was clear that his children and wife were much older than they were when they first moved in. I can understand that adding a lot of dates can quickly date a book but I would have liked to have know how much time passed between events. For example, how long did he have the vegetable garden before planting the trees? What event happened when? The book made it seem that events took place over a fairly short period of time fairly recently but I get the impression that it really takes place over a span of 5-10 years.

This book didn't give tips or much in the way of facts but it was good to read of someone else's experience gardening, especially one what wasn't always successful. The gimmick of the $64 tomato was a cute one (he added up all of the costs associated with the garden and figured out the per tomato cost) but I am not sure if he is right in saying that people don't vegetable garden to save money or that if they do, they are unsuccessful. If you are sensible about gardening and aren't trying to plant a small scale farm, I think it can be cheaper than buying produce. Fresh, organic vegetables are expensive and even if I only get a few tomatoes a plant, I only spent $1 on the actual plant and about $2 on soil. Still cheaper than Whole Foods and they taste better.

Despite some of my questions, the book really was fun to read, quick and entertaining. I think it would make a good gift for a gardener or a welcome diversion on a trip.

Summary: Gardening adventures and mishaps
The book was laugh out loud humor with a few serious asides. I really enjoyed reading this aloud to my wife while she worked on a couple knitting projects. It was perfect for one or two humorous chapters before bed.

Don't look for advice on "how" to garden. As a fairly green gardener myself (5 years), I can't believe the costs and problems this guy ran into with his garden. Still, I was able to identify with many of his problems of deer, bugs, weeding, and so on with a few shared laughs and cries over gardening.

A good book to read for a few laughs.
Summary: Funny and touching book
This book is a must read for anyone who has ever spent time in a garden. It is one man's chronicle of family, the challenges and triumphs of growing your own fruit and vegetables, the power of nature and learning about yourself.

Summary: Discovering Your Personality Type
The book is a quick read and easy to understand. The insights are mostly good and the system an interesting one. Take the test and see how accurate you think it is. It does provide a tool for understanding your own and others behavior.
Summary: Great Book
If you have read Personality Types then this book is even better. It actually shows you who you are by a series of questions. I remember because it showed me I was wrong about my own self (after just reading Personality Types)! So, needless to say, this book along with Personality Types is all you will ever need to learn to about psychology.

Summary: Great Writing by the Ape Lady
As most of us I have always thought of Jane Goodall as the "Ape Lady" and I was interested to see what she had to say about eating. I saw an advertisement for this book in a magazine I subscribe to and thought it would be a good read as I began my transition from carnivore to herbivore. I became a vegan recently not because I was overly concerned about fuzzy little animals, but because I wanted to take long term control of my health. After reading Ms. Goodall's book I'm now concerned about the fuzzy little animals. Previous to reading this book I did want my food to be "organic", but I wasn't concerned whether I was eating Round-up Ready corn or not nor what the possible loop holes in the deifinion of organic are. Ms. Goodall's book really opened my eyes to issues that I had never thought about and how I can have an impact at my local market. In the future, I will buy my seasonal fruits and veggies from local farmers. She taught me ways that I can have an impact and make a difference on the future generations. Overall, this book was very insightful, easy to read, and I highly recommended it.
Summary: Answers Lots of Questions
As a vegetarian and someone who likes to think of myself as reasonably conscientious about environmental, health, and animal rights issues, I knew in the back of my mind that there were things out there that I needed to know more about. I just didn't know where to find the answers in one place.

This book is it.

This book lays out the environmental, health, animal rights, and human rights reason that we need to shift away from the large biotech corporate-controlled food supply and to a more local, organic, sustainable paradigm for eating. It does so without laying on lots of guilt and without presenting a doomsday scenario that leaves no room for hope. The topic is serious; the consequences are enormous. But Ms. Goodall gives lots of practical information on what a consumer can do to make a real difference for their health, their world community, and animals.

Many books hit you over the head with gut-wrenching facts, leaving you reeling and feeling like there's no hope left and nothing to be done. Not so with Harvest for Hope. In the future, when I am (inevitably) asked/challenged yet again about my food choices, I will simply say, "Read this book."
Summary: Excellent !!!
A must read for everyone. A real eye opener. The information you receive from this book has the power to change the way you view life. This book has made a tremendous impact on mine & my families life.

Summary: Wonderful
This is simply one of the best NYC historical reference work available. The book is divided into periods and will display numerous maps , photos and drawings of the buildings and landscape of the city at that time in history. Plenty of history is included to make certain you are keyed in to the era, and how the buildings fit in. Just a beautiful book. Great binding and very sturdy.
Strong buy
Summary: Almost Great
This book includes many really nice maps of early New York. Much of the historical information included in the maps is uniquely presented here and lacking in many other publications. However, there are many editorial mistakes and misspellings that I have observed, which makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the information. Additionally, the narrative text is simple, limited and sometimes disjointed and difficult to follow. Buy this book simply for its beautiful graphics and depictions of the city as it used to be. Some periods of the city's history could be greatly expanded, especially the city's role in the revolution and the siege of Fort Washington. Anyone with knowledge of the city will find it of limited value beyond the maps and illustrations. A little polishing of this book and some additional material for some historical periods in a future edition would make this book an outstanding work. For now, I would call it good but lacking in important areas.

Summary: Profound---At Times Overwhelmingly Thought Provoking
I am a woman. I'm only on page 90-something, but I find this book to be profound. My personal experience tells me that men ARE too passive. Their silence is K I L L I N G their marriages, their children, and MEN's own spirits!! This is not meant to be judgmental, it is just my deep experience!!

My feelings as I read this book ranged from a feeling of awe as I recognized the truth of what Dr. Crabb wrote, to feeling like I wanted to weep and wail in despair as I recalled the pain consequences resulting from the silences of the men in my own life. At times I literally had to close the book and lay down and just ponder what I'd just read. At other times, my soul Y E A R N E D to hear the voice of men begin to break the codes of silence around the world that is permitting evil to exist and grow!

Dr. Crabb not only gave a penetrating analysis of what happened in Genesis, but his examples from other parts of the Bible seem to make amazing sense and seem to reveal UNCOMMON insight into the silence of other men in the Bible. One of the co-authors, Don Hudson, is a professor teaches Hebrew at Western Seminary in Seattle, Washington. I can't imagine Professor Hudson would knowingly let Dr. Crabb come up with a wrong interpretation just to sell the book!!!

From reading this book, I've come to believe that men A R E indeed to speak into situations like God did!!! I see it all so much more clearly now!!! Now that I see these behaviors of the characters who remained silent, I cannot not see!! Once you know the truth, you can't unknow it!! How do you explain these silences!! If you have a better insight, please tell us!!!

I haven't finished the book yet, but I believe that Dr. Crabb is going to indicate that while a man may not always know what to do or say, he should AT THE VERY LEAST SPEAK TO GOD about the situation and not be silent or passive!

I wish that every pastor in America would read this book and would do some heavy preaching on it. I hope that more men will read this book and review it.

The Bible does NOT record that Eve SPOKE to Adam, but that she GAVE him to eat. Heeding the voice of your wife," was the translation. I wonder what the original Hebrew said? Now T H A T would be worth investigating!!!

I believe we can infer that she at least HANDED him the piece of fruit. When she handed him the piece of fruit, why did he not REFUSE it? He at least could have DONE something, like knock the fruit out of her hand. At some point he would have NEEDED to SAY or DO SOMETHING!!! Why did he NOT do this?

I am single, but if I had a husband, I would EXPECT him to say something if I was about to do something wrong. I may have a free will, but as my leader, he has the AUTHORITY and OBLIGATION to tell me he thinks I'm going in the wrong direction. Likewise the wife, also has the authority to voice her concerns. She cannot force her husband to do right, but she certainly SHOULD speak up. It's a two way-street. Each spouse regularly needs the feedback and input of the other. That's just one one of the many unique dimensions of marriage.

I don't sense that the authors are bashing men. They are just rare individuals, who had the courage to SEE and REVEAL what they have seen!!

If I could afford to, I'd buy this book for every man I've ever known and give a copy to every man I'll ever meet in the future.

This book is a rare gem, and sadly it will probably go largely unread and unappreciated. I applaud all the authors for their UNCOMMON courage to be so transparent and BREAK the SILENCE! May God bless them, and may this book help to change the lives of everyone who reads it and those that they love!!

Summary: Great book. A must for any mature man
Larry Crabb and his associates describe parts of how they were raised and lived. By example they discovered the world's way of being a man, the wrong way. As they discover the real meaning of being tough and in control, their lives taka a change.

Starts a little slow, but the wait is worth it. In depth, insightful and a marvelous guide for any man and especially one who wants to fulfill his calling.
Summary: "...because you harkened unto your wife".
Is the typical male a non-communicating oblivious dolt? Do we men grunt and make bodily noises as proof of this? Would men rather sit around and do nothing? Do we care about nothing but ourselves?

I think not, and history bears out the true nature of man; he wants to make life better for all of us, men and women. Larry Crabb has done nothing but make men out to be the "fall" guy for relationship ills. This "interpretation" of the true biblical story of Adam, Eve, and the fall, is a dangerous addition to the myth of man as the blubbering fool ideology in our world today. Why Crabb ignores the free will, and personal choice, that our "parents" both enjoyed, is beyond me. Eve had a choice and Adam had no responsibility to either stop her, lord over her, or to prevent her from doing anything. She knew the rule God had told Adam, and that was enough. The serpent even questioned her, and she responded that she did know what God told Adam. To say that Adam should have stopped her is total fabrication. As one reviewer mirrored, God did not judge Adam because he didn't step into the chaos, God's own words in Genesis 3:17 were, "...because you harkened unto your wife". Get it straight Mr. Crabb, God spoke and you ignore His words! Crabb's assertion is ludicrous. He takes nothing and builds a case from it.

What this book does is add to the idea that man is a fool. It places women above men and is fuel to the fire that is burning over all the earth; women are taking the upper hand and adding to the damage Eve alone is responsible for initiating. Today, women are continuing the destruction of marriage, nee relationship, through birth control, so called abortion "rights", using the power of their careers to divorce their spouses at an unprecedented rate, and through psychological distortions such as saying any man who gets angry, or ever yells, is an abuser and should be gotten rid of and needs therapy or drugs.

If you look at the bible and check Genesis 3:6, Eve made her choice because it made her look good, it would leave a good taste in her mouth, and she would look wise; this doesn't sound like a person unable to make a choice. It is a narcissistic perspective. It doesn't sound like Adam was supposed to butt in. Adam was innocent, until he CHOSE to eat the fruit at Eve's urging. Why should Adam have doubted the beautiful creature God gave him? Women have inherited the predisposition Eve had; to be superior in men's eyes, as women today are doing. God made us equal. Our sin is equal in every way, but our behavior is not. Women were, and are, still deceived. This deception has become the norm, and men are paying the price for it. More women today make more money than men than at any time in history. There are more women in power positions than ever; we may see a woman president in our lifetime. Women today; don't want to have natural childbirth and suffer the pain God told them they would have as evidenced by the rise in C-Sections, don't want to raise their own children by using nannies, and would rather work than be a mother and wife at home because it is "embarrassing" to be a "stay at home mom". These societal ills and more are all fallout of Eve's sin. To say that men, as Crabb asserts, can change the world through intervention in the chaos is absurd. The path was set in the Garden, and women are ruling the roost, in contradiction to God's judgment of Eve in Genesis 3:16,"...and he will rule over you". Well my fellow earthlings, our country has let the revolt against God's command, and women are in charge. Eve tried to show superiority to not only God, but Adam as well. Adam's sin was to disobey God, but not for the same reasons Eve ate. Adam was seduced by Eve, and ate the fruit; Eve simply continued the deception of the Serpent. Today, women do not want equality, they want to control it all, and their choices are as damaging as Eve's was in the Garden.
Women today also demand that men be like them; that is absurd! Crabb has bought into this psychology of a "feminized" man. Dr. Dobson discusses this in "Bringing up Boys". We were built differently than women, and always will be. The job of being a relationship warrior belongs to women! That is what the word "helpmeet" means. Women are supposed to be above the chaos and be there for their man, and not only did Eve fail, but women are failing miserably today at the role God created them for. Eve created the chaos, and her daughters are following in her steps. Men cannot reverse that. Yes men need to be more proactive, but from what we all have seen, when men try to step into the chaos of relationships, they are chastised as being controlling and manipulative by women. Sorry Mr. Crabb, you have it in reverse, women need to stop creating chaos and be what God created them for, a warrior of relationship.

I recommend women, and men, read a realistic view of men in a book by Shaunti Feldhahn of Atlanta, called "for women only; what you need to know about the inner lives of men". She has it right. Thank God that Mrs. Feldhahn sees men for what they are; not the myths most women, and Larry Crabb, assert are true.

As a Christian man, I refuse to believe the lies perpetrated on men by writers, who I am certain have issues from their past including guilt and shame, telling us men we are fools and not willing to "step into the chaos". If this were so, how did we get the advances in our world scientifically, or even the development of our own country. The founding fathers of this country stepped into the chaos of England to come here to find freedom. Most relationship books are written by men. How could that be so if men did not want to face the chaos? Not only is this notion of a failure to step into the chaos not biblical, but it is damaging to all men who I know in my heart, do not want chaos in their relationships. God tells us to "stand firm" in His Truth. He repeatedly tells us He will deal with the chaos in His Word. It is not our job to step into the chaos, but to stand firm in faith, trusting God to deal with the chaos. Only God can make order of the chaos. We men are to simply walk in that faith. Women need to do the same and quit trying to force their narcissistic ways of Genesis 3:6 upon the world.

Summary: Best and most balanced single reference on the Enneagram.
This is the best single reference on the Enneagram that I know of and I own a lot of books on the Enneagram and use it in my coaching practice. If I had to limit my recommendations on the Enneagram to one book for all audiences, this would be my top choice by a mile.

Riso and Hudson cover the basics of Enneagram theory in a thoughtful, well-organized and almost poetic manner. They integrate psychological insights with spiritual wisdom without sacrificing a balanced presentation.

One of the things that make this book truly a gem is the presentation of the developmental aspects of the Enneagram levels. In Riso and Hudson's model, there are nine different levels to each type and they describe this depth dimension well without going overboard on detail. They also do a good job of covering the instinctual variants, wing types and suggestions for personal growth for each type.

In a relatively short book, Riso and Hudson cover and incredible amount of ground in a detailed, but easy to read format. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about their personality and how to work with it.

Summary: My favorite Enneagram Book
The Enneagram isn't easily taught through reading a book, but this one does the best job in both introducing the types and more importantly giving clear ways to work with the system. By including core features and super-ego messages, it helps the seeker go a bit deeper into the types than any other of the books I read--getting behind the personality into what drives and feeds it. The little test at the beginning of each chapter are pretty good, but I think it's better to look at the chart of the levels in each Type chapter to help discover your Type. The chapters feature many exercises to guide the reader into self reflection.Other features, like the "Red Flag" fears of each Type, are addressed helping a person notice when they are losing themselves. I think this is a good book both to introduce the system and for the more knowlegeable student of the System. I have used it as a source to take me deeper and deeper on personal journey and a clear way to help others understand themselves.
Summary: Brilliant reference, worthy of many readings!
When I first heard about the Enneagram, it sounded very new age and unappealing, with everyone's type being a "number." I couldn't have been more wrong.

I encountered The Wisdom of the Enneagram in 2001 at New Ventures West. I've been reading and re-reading it ever since, studying various types, energies, and the history of the Enneagram itself over time. I am always amazed at how helpful this book is in understanding people (whether clients or friends or family!).

Furthermore, if you're interested in knowing "how" to develop and not just "what type" you are, this is a book worthy of deep study.
