try the "The Jeep Bible"

Summary: To all TJ/YJ owners
Even though the newest edition says it has been updated to include up to the 1999 model, information on the YJ/TJ Wranglers is slim at best. It is only two stars for all YJ/TJ owners. This is s true CJ or classic Jeep owner book and has much info on those models. A lot info in this book is too basic. It needs severe updating for the newer models. I would rate it a four star for any CJ owner.

Summary: Disappointed
I bought this book because I was rebuilding my T 176 Transmission. The preview stated that it gave information on transmission rebuilds. Well it does, but not on the one I have. Does not give info on the T176/T178 tranny. After I bought the book I realized this is one mans rebuild of a Jeep as it should be in his mind. Stick with the Chiltons. Overall I did not find this book useful.

Summary: Good idea but nowhere close to expectations
This book looks like it was written by someone who works in their own garage as a hobby. There is no real technical data in this book-- no hint of professionalism.
The photos are black and white and most of the time they don't really show what the book is talking about. There are no torque specs. Little detail or warnings on how things are done.
With the quality of this book, you're better off saving the $30 and pulling the jeep apart yourself to see how it works.

It costs $90, however, non-factory service manual is a waste of money for most of buyers. You just don't find information that you need to repair your vehicle. Summary: Garbage, inaccurate, incomplete, misleading This book is garbage, innacurate and misleading. Like frustration-then buy it. A jeep mechanic told me this book was a great source of customers for him. The Haynes book is no better. These companies just copy errors and inaccuracies from each other. Another experienced mechanic called it propoganda, just enough truth so people can't tell what is lies. Maximum frustration. Example- just try to replace a front axle u joint using this books method. Their method works only on new cars. You won't be doing work on new under warranty cars. 5 year old cars rust. The Chilton new car methods in this book just don't work. This book will make you think repairs are simple, until you get half way into it and it just does not work. Summary: RE-build it yourself! Typical Chilton book, tells you everything about the car you could possibly want to know except the thing you're looking for. I recently bought an old (1988) Jeep Comanche; wanted to replace the speedometer cable...using this book I could replace the transmission, overhaul the engine, re-build the differential, but no where could I find any info on the speedometer. Line drawings are crude and difficult to interpret, photos are worse. The text is good and gives adequate instructions. When I go to grind the valves, I'll know how! Summary:

Summary: Chilton's Jeep CJ/Scrambler 1971-86 Repair Manual
As always, Chiltons manuals are one of the best for reference to a vehicle. They are usually on the mark for information and "how to" things. This particular manual is a little weak on the V-8 304 CID engine and I believe that there are mis-prints throughout on the numbering and figures that are drawn out. The electrical diagrams are the best there are but I think that the identifying the part that you are looking at could use a little more detail. All in all, the Chiltons repair manuals remain the best.

Summary: Absolute necessity for Jeep 'Wheelers!
A very comprehensive manual. I have worked on my various Jeeps dozens of times and have found this manual to be indespensible. Based on a complete tear down and reassembly of the Jeep vehicles that are discussed. An invaluable resource. Although I can buy it considerably cheaper down at the local parts store.

There are too many years included in this book. There are hundreds of minor (and not so minor) differences in makes of jeeps over the years. Every year is different and the technology has changed. Summary: Great book for the restoring sole!
I bought this book for my husband who is restoring a '56 Willies. We had look for manuals and books to guide him through the process and couldn't find any that he liked. I found this book on-line and decided to take a chance. I'm very glad I did!!!

My husband loves this book. It has step by step instructions with pictures (as many know are worth a 1000 words!) and tips. We would recomend this book.

Summary: Shadetree mechanics -- step-by-step
Contrary to a previous review, I found this book to be an EXCELLENT step-by-step guide for this shadetree mechanic. In fact, I'm using it to do a complete "frame-off" restoration of a vintage Jeep. And I've never even had a shop class! (Or even any real interest in cars, for that matter.)

Sure, some of the instructions could have been more detailed, and there could have been more pictures. But remember that this book covers FORTY-TWO YEARS of Jeeps! Adding more pictures or other detail would make the book unwieldy, or necessitate dividing it into multiple volumes.

There are sections on (1) general information and maintenance, (2) tune-up and performance maintenance, (3) engine and engine overhaul, (4) emission controls and fuel system, (5) chassis electrical, (6) drive train, (7) suspension and steering, (8) brakes, (9) body and trim, and (10) mechanic's data.

Each section is further subdivided into functional area, then by specific Jeep model, and each contains operational theory where appropriate.

Without this book, there is NO way I would have even attemped this Jeep restoration. WITH the book, I'm about 90% of the way through the frame-off restoration with very few problems. Not bad for a total amateur. And I couldn't have come this far without this book!

Bottom line: If you're restoring an old Jeep, or just want to maintain and repair your old Jeep, you should have this book!

Better than the Haynes manual, however, lacks in easy to follow instructions for repair and removal for most components. Gives great detail of specifications. Not a book for major repairs done by a shadetree mechanic.
