Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great resource I just returned from a 7,250 mile road trip, following many of the routes in this book, specifically the Great Northern to the Pacific Coast Highway to the Oregon Trail. Jamie's book contained so many useful stopping places, although if I had stopped at all of them, this trip would have taken months rather than weeks. In using the book, you have to choose what works for you - and not everything is of interest. However, he did lead me to some wonderful places like Sullys Hill Nature Preserve in Devil's Lake, MT; the Buffalo Bill Historic Museum in Cody, WY; and the museum dedicated to lumbering in Grand Rapids, MN - all of which I might well have bypassed had it not been for Jamie's recomendations. If you are planning a road trip this summer, either near or far, this book is a great resource. It is also great for the armchair traveller. But beware, it may get you out of your armchair and on the road. Buyer beware! Summary: Road Trip My dad got me this book for our trip this year. Usually I don't like family trips but this year is different. We're mapping out our routes and it's going to be a good summer. Summary: Fun, helpful and exciting ;-) I love this book a lot. It's really heavy and when it cam, I was trying to work out what was in the box because of the weight. I love travelling and I love America and while I've been many times before, I usually fly from city to city (with the exception of the drive from LA to Vegas and back) and therefore miss out on the real America and all the in between stops. I bought this book because I swear next visit, even though gas prices are at an all time high, I want to do more exploring which I really think can only be done this well by driving rather than flying. This gives you a lot more vacational options than shopping. From the Great Smokey Mountains to Tyringam, MA to Shamrock, TX, this is such a great book. With the inclusion of maps and extra info and colour-coded route markers, the choice of drives you can do is endless. There appears as if the enitire mainland is covered. There is quirky facts about each place, information on where to get the best whatever in different towns, so I'm really looking forward to putting this excellent book to use. Can't wait and I highly, highly recommend this book to everyone. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Super Teaching Textbook This was an excellent textbook that allows teachers to supplement their lesson plans using activities that utilize the multiple intelligences. Jensen's book should be a bible for any new teacher entering the profession and for educators who need to emancipate themselves from the sit and lecture method. Summary: Educational and ACTUALLY fun! I bought this book for a course I am taking in graduate school and I have sincerely enjoyed reading it. The information is presented clearly and it reveals some truly interesting things about the brain and how it functions in learning. I enthusiastically recommend it! Summary: Brain Based Learning I am enjoying this book greatly. Very informative, easy to read. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Teaching With The Brain In Mind Fabulous book! I am a teacher and am recommending it to every teacher I know. I think it's a great book for every parent to read! It would be wonderful if "those government people" who make the many many many standards would read this book. Summary: Mixed review, but has some useful info I had an interest in the brain and learning and bought a couple of books, including this one. It sat on my shelf until last week due to time required elsewhere--or so I told myself. The principal at my school engaged me in a conversation on the topic as she is currently reading the book. (It was nice to find someone who shares this interest, as most others get that "glazed" look when I bring the subject up.) Well, I was motivated to begin the book and went right home to read it. Now, I am a skeptic at heart and need to "see things for myself"; I do not buy into things hook, line, and sinker. I found the writing style of this author to be a little lacking and I have several spots where I jotted down notes in the margins when I really disagreed with some things. So, I certainly would not treat this book as the Bible on the brain related to learning. However, I did get many good ideas to try out in the classroom and I am truly looking forward to getting back to school to implement them. If just two or three of these ideas stand the test of time and serve to improve my teaching, the book will have been worth its price and the time invested in reading it. The author does recommend certain "atmosphere" guidelines so, I suppose, that is touchy-feely; however, most of these ideas make sense. A child will not perform to potential when he/she perceives threat, whether it be fear of risk-taking/being wrong, fear of losing the esteem of peers or being mocked, etc. Feeling threatened, to whatever degree, creates stress; stress does not promote optimal learning. I also found that this book affirmed some of my current practices such as getting children up and moving frequently. I will now be sure to do this even more often; it is easy to do and takes little time. Music will definitely be used more wisely in my classroom in addition to movement. I have begun reading How the Brain Learns by Sousa now and I ordered two more "brain" books. I am almost done with Sousa's book and I like it even more than this one. While few people (even colleagues) share this interest with me, those reading this review most likely do. With that in mind, I do recommend this book as it has lots of useful info and ideas but would recommend How the Brain Learns even more. Summary: Response to "Teaching With The Brain In Mind" This a wonderful book to read. Eric Jensen's writing helps keep me interested. I learned a lot of useful information that I can take with me when I return to the classroom. I just wished that I had heard about this years ago when I was an undergraduate. My sincere hope is that when it comes time for our standardized testing that my students will be more than ready to go. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: All the things you've ever underlined This book is a great way to "remember" all the teaching techniques you forget to use. It's like a compilation of all those ideas you've underlined over the years in all the different books and articles you've read. I agree with Minnesota above that there are probably books with more ideas, but the size and format of this book makes it practical: easy to take with you, easy to review, and easy to immediately implement. I especially like the format of the book...one page per topic (like "How to Engage the Spatial-Episodic Memory"), a brief one or two paragraph summary of the theory and then a bullet-list of ideas. I am glad to have this book and recommend it to busy teachers like myself who have to "read and run". Summary: Simplistic and ordinary Mr. Jensen's "Brain-Compatible Strategies" was a disappointment. His ideas were commonplace and uninteresting as was his writing. A much better source for ideas is Mel Silberman's "Active Learning: 101 Strategies to Teach Any Subject." Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Big... but it reads like a novel! Great book and easy to read! Author explain theory in basic terms and then, he give scripts or examples of how it should work or be written at TSQL level. Index's book it's almost perfect; for being a 1400 pages book it is not difficult to find any topic on it. You will find a lot of nice SQL 2000 tuning tips which add an extra value to the book itself. Could be used as a MCDBA prep. book and of course, in your job or if you're into Databases Admin. and Design business. The SQL Administration part its my favorite. You will find how to use the GUI for create databases, tables and SQL administration tasks. This part covers almost all GUI and Enterprise Manager options, including backup methods and strategies. Why not 5 stars? SQL Internal part tends to be too much technical and difficult to read, IMO. It's Microsoft SQL 2000, i know, a very complex database engine, but more diagrams or explanations don't hurt on this part . If you're a newbie or have not much SQL fundamentals under your belt, you could get boring when you arrive to this. Cluster technology could be better and much more indepth also. Summary: Fantastic book I was suprised but the book is really good for both beginers as well as experts. I learned a lot from this book even thought I have been working with sql server for a long time. Would definitely recomend to any level. Summary: The best there is...ok so now i think Sams is better than Wrox...lol Well I needed a crash course in SQL server management and some T-SQL.I attacked this book head-on. The book is very comprehensive and i am very amazed. It really is a complete guide to the GUI on SQL server. If you want some hard core T-SQL guidance then get another book...in addition. Sams teach yourself t-sql in 21 days is great. So i am on my way to 70-228 and this awesome book has great chapters on every single knowlege set neccesary to ace this exam. Summary: |

It highlights the communicative aspect of daily life, but suffers when it focuses on psychological issues (perception, etc.) The best aspect is the intermixing of cross-cultural and historical perspectives on current communication practices. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A compendium of 60 of the most beloved and popular block quilt designs Thimbleberries Big Book Of Quilt Blocks is a compendium of 60 of the most beloved and popular block quilt designs, each created for a different quilt-making style. The author, Lynette Jensen, is the founder of Thimbleberries Design Studio, which has brought about more than 850 Thimbleberries Quilt Clubs devoted to her original designs. Featuring color combinations that herald classic quilts, a range of projects from casual to formal, and streamlined techniques such as rotary-cutting and quick-piecing that save time while producing quality results, Thimbleberries Big Book Of Quilt Blocks is a collection of patterns, color diagrams and straightforward piecing instructions ideal for intermediate to experienced quilters. Summary: Wonderful collection of some of the best patterns! This book is a wonderful collection of some of Thimbleberries best patterns. The cutting instructions and assembly instructions are also very good. Summary: Its value depends on what you're looking for This book is a hard one to evaluate. If you're interested in a certain kind of quilting, it's a 5-star book without question. If you're looking for something different, it's somewhat disappointing. Thimbleberries Big Book of Quilt Blocks shows you, step-by-step, how to make five quilts. They're all full size quilts: 62x78 inches, 88x96, 81x98, 92x112. However, they are all also *sampler* quilts; that is, you make 12 (or whatever) different blocks, using the same fabrics for each block, and then you sew them together into a larger quilt top. For example, the first quilt encourages you to make one quilt block for each month (which implies "make one each month," even though you could make 'em in one busy week I suppose). The book does an excellent job of explaining the fabrics to use, and how much you'll need for the entire quilt. The "Pansy Park" quilt, for example, uses 1 1/8 yard of a small green leaf print for the whole quilt; that green is an accent in each of the blocks. (The quilt uses 18 other fabrics as well; plan to spend some time at the fabric store!) If you like to make a quilt that matches the picture, you'll appreciate how he book doesn't just say "small green leaf print;" it shows you a thumbnail image of the fabric. You can acquire a matching one (you can buy the Thimbleberries fabric, which is designed for RJR Fabrics) or pick something similar from your nearby quilting store. Another thing I appreciate about the book is the thoroughness of the instructions. The construction of each block -- and there are LOTS of pretty blocks! -- is explained in detail. Each block is approached as a standalone project (including "at this point, the block should measure 14.5 inches square"), making it a good choice for those with limited time to work on a quilt. You _could_ get lost, but you'd have to work pretty hard to do so. There are two downsides that keep me from loving this book. First is that it's all sampler quilts. I'm just not that fond of them, because it means a new setup for each block, and I don't personally care for the style. Of course, there's nothing to keep me from making an entire quilt using just one or two of the blocks they suggest (some of them are really gorgeous and the instructions are not intimidating, even for this "practicing beginner"), but I'd have to guess at the amount of fabric needed. I don't trust my math that much yet! My second objection is to the fabric choices. All of the examples are in a very "country" style: little flowers on fabrics that, though not exactly calico, make me think of calico. They're mostly small-scale prints, too, with few designs suited for the big focus fabrics I prefer. ("Where can I fit that great purple bird fabric in THIS quilt?" I wonder.) And while there's a range of values, they aren't particularly bright. Obviously, I can pick my own colors... but the designs have lots of small squares and triangles. Few of them would work with my stash. However, the last few paragraphs are entirely personal to my needs. Your idea of a great quilt is likely to be far different from mine. (Heck, I'm still proud of myself if my points line up right.) I don't expect you to agree with my taste. All I can do is give you my own look inside the book, and hope that its description is helpful. If you like country sampler quilts, this book will be exactly what you'd hoped for -- it's a very well designed book, and probably a great one for someone who wants to try lots of different things. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Different Brains, Different Learners A great book for teachers as well as parents. It helps to understand what is or may be happening in the brain. I like the recommendations given on ways we can help alleviate stressful events under given conditions. Summary: Lacking This book lacks the depth it seems to promise. Some of the illustrations are lacking. There is not enough meat to help anyone with special needs learners. I would suggest you look elsewhere. I was greatly disappointed since the majority of work by Jensen is wonderful. Summary: Essential reading for all teachers Eric Jensen knows the needs of busy teachers and has the gift in helping them to utilize up-to-date knowledge in brain studies. Here it is applied to identifying 10 types of different learners: 1. impulsive ones with ADD, 2. resigned with learned helplessness, 3. challenged reader with dyslexia, 4. argumentative with oppositional disorder, 5. frustrated with learning delayed, 6. hyperactive, 7. with auditory-processing deficits, 8. out of control, 9. the demotivated with chronic threat and distress, and 10. depressed and troubled. You are given a pre-test and a post-test of 10 unique students to see if you can identify the patterns of symptoms rather than isolated behaviors. There are many color-prints of corresponding brain-images and graphic charts that facilitate learning. Brief summaries of treatment methods, supplementary resources on books, websites and organizations are given on each type. All teachers should acquire such general background knowledge so that the unqiue needs and gifts of students can be respected. Summary: |
