Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: A decent collection of stories, quotes and advice Overall this book feels a bit dated, it was written in a pre-Google era that feels like it was decades ago. The book is too short but has a few good ideas. Don't be fooled by the excellent marketing behind it: Create like a God, Command like a King, Work like a slave. This is what made me buy the book, but the chapters on these subjects are paltry and offer little in hands-on practical advice. A very decent quick read, but not worth the price. Summary: A Definitive Guide to Building Revolutionary Products and Companies Revolutionary products and companies outperform their competitors by completely changing the way things are done -- not by doing the same thing better. Perhaps the best book on this subject is Rules for Revolutionaries by Guy Kawasaki. The book is based on 3 principles: 1) Create like a god "Develop revolutionary products and services by analyzing how to solve current problems." First, Guy walks you through the 3-step revolutionary thought process that leads to breakthrough product creation. It's very practical, and if followed, will generate amazing ideas for your business. Next, Guy introduces you to a concept he calls, "Don't Worry, Be Crappy." Simply put, don't worry about perfecting a product before sending it to market. Focus on getting your product quickly to the market, but be ready to make constant improvements based on user feedback. He says effective companies have a circular built-in system for continuous product perfection, rather than viewing the product life cycle as linear. It's not how good you can make your product the first time, but rather how quickly you can respond to feedback after it launches. Finally, Guy explains DICEE -- a formula for creating great products. If you've ever wondered what makes Apple products so attractive, it would be beneficial for you to examine this formula and evaluate how it can be added to your own products. 2) Command like a king "Take charge with strategic decisions that break down barriers of product adoption." For any revolutionary product, there will be barriers to overcome. Here, Guy gives us 5 common ones: Ignorance, Inertia, Complexity, Channel, and Price. The revolutionary entrepreneur anticipates this, and uses one or more of the book's 6 "barrier busters." Interestingly, after removing barriers to adoption it then becomes necessary to form new barriers to retain users. These "positive" barriers, if developed correctly, can also promote the creation of "customer evangelists" -- people that love your product so much they act as an unpaid sales force for you. 3) Work like a slave "Relentlessly absorb information from your environment, then spread the knowledge you've gained." The revolutionary keeps up to date by viewing the situation from different viewpoints, spending time with typical users, and then gaining information from those encounters. Businesspeople that stay (physically) close to their target customers are more likely to produce successful products. Guy also reminds his readers that if a new concept will be an inevitable long-term success, the best strategy is to focus on gaining market share rather than reaping big profits initially. While obvious in concept, startup cashflow reality often makes companies do the opposite. He uses the example of Apple and Microsoft in the 80's -- Apple unwisely choose a fat profit margin at the expense of long-term market share. For any entrepreneur wanting to make a difference, I would highly recommend Rules for Revolutionaries. The book is highly readable, and Guy Kawasaki's entrepreneurial experience at Apple Computer and later as CEO of seed capital firm garage.com is evident throughout. Summary: Sophomoric The book is full of pie in the sky mentality and ideals as seen through rose colored glasses. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Inspiring !, Great Stuff ! Some of us desire to be more than the others. To be the next Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, etc. This books shows you how to clarify your mind and find a motivating path in our lives. It is a "must" in any book collection. Summary: Guy Kawasaki Helped Me Sell My Dream Selling The Dream is for people who really want to learn how to launch an idea. Guy Kawaski taught me the importance of surviving first then success follows. This book provides some excellent foundational principles for how to develop your concept. We have to remember that Macintosh was like the David versus the Goliath when they decided to launch the Mac. Guy was one of the key people behind evangelizing the Mac computer and this book helps you to understand how they approached the process. GUY HELPED ME DEVELOP MY EVANGELIST DIFFERENTIATING FACTOR It was Guy who really showed me through the first five chapters the importance of Evangelisim. I consider Guy the Grandfather of Evangelisim and my spiritual Elder brother. What he releases in the first six chapters is the philosophy of Evangelisim or what some might call the Evangelist Creed. In chapter one he deals with defining what Evangelisim is and by the time you get to chapter six you will learn how to implement evangelisim. This is one of the most powerful 94 pages of reading and it doesn't get any better than this. BOOKS LIKE THIS NEVER GROW OLD... I think these types of books never grow out of date. Even though the dream was probably launched almost two decades back you need to read this book as a history lesson of how to approach the process of selling your ideas. The book is a easy read and well laid out. ****FOUR & A HALF STARS AND HERE'S WHY... The only reason why I'm not giving this book five stars is because of the title. Guy should have named this book "THE SPIRIT OF EVANGELISIM". (lol). I know Guy will like my title so I propose if he decides to update the book to also update the title. But this is a great book for Evangelist of Sales, Evangelist of Marketing and Evangelist of Business. Summary: A Good Book in Need of an Update I recently attended a conference where Mr. Kawasaki was the keynote speaker. He gave an excellent presentation, and because he writes like he speaks this is a very good book. Unfortunately, what keeps it from being a great book is that it was written in the early 90s. It needs a Second Edition to look at what went wrong in the dot-com era, for instance, and whether more (or less) corporate evangelism could have made a difference. It also needs to analyze the Mac Product Introduction Plan and address what went wrong (or at least acknowledge that the document had some flaws in predicting the outcome of the Apple-IBM war). Some Twenty-First Century examples of how corporate evangelism still works would be helpful, too. The book has a very light tone. If you're a fan of the Dilbert (anti)management books, you'll appreciate Kawasaki's approach. Occasionally the anti-IBM bias strikes the wrong chord (especially since very few of the jibes are directed at Bill Gates and Microsoft). Apple takes its lumps too, mainly in the area of their corportate structuring. Coming from 1991's perspective, the examples in the book are showing their age. Should a new edition be published, including the suggestions noted above, expect it to be a four- or five-star book. As it is, it's a nice, relatively-inexpensive read that demonstrates there's still hope for the Davids of the world to overcome their own personal Goliaths. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Useful Tool Excellent tool for the DIY'er, packed with photos and technical diagrams. 1 1/4 inches thick in black and white. I have used it extensively on rebuilding my JS550 and it has been a godsend for many things. Includes torque settings, carb adjustment settings, electrical wiring diagrams, explanations of how bilge system works, in depth fault finding procedures etc.etc. Only fault is it is hard to navigate and find things at first, but after studying it to the lengths I have, it is easy to find out what you want quickly after you understand the layout. A tip is to go through it with a highlighter and highlight everything relevant to your particular ski, THEN read it! Once you know what parts to disregard, it is much easier to understand! (Clymer is next best thing to a Haynes manual). Just waiting for one to come out for my 750SXi. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Something all marketers need to know and implement. I decided to read this book based on the title and surely the amount of good feedback it received on Amazon. What the book talks about is how other companies make the shopping experience memorable for the customer. The author takes a particular company and clearly shows their customer focused marketing and relationship building. Customer evangelism is something that a company should be working on and once you spot one, DO NOT ignore them. This could be your sales force! In many instances the book talked about creating a community (this we know) as it will help create evangelism. Few companies mentioned and studied throughout the book were, (Southwest Airlines, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Krispy Kreme, The Dallas Mavericks, IBM, O'Reilly and Associates, and SolutionPeople) In some instances I felt as if I was reading an ad for a particular company (which I hate to do). Nevertheless, I believe the information was valuable and there was a lot that I could learn from the stories told. Summary: Care about your business? Read this book. If only every business I did business with had the inclination to read and follow the advice in this book. No more shopping headaches! No more frustrating conversations with (and I use the term lightly) customer service representatives who really don't care about their customers! Not only was this book easy, quick and enjoyable to read, it gave sound, practical, applicable advice. The author uses excellent, real-life examples of companies who have implemented (or not) the concepts he espouses. They're such simple concepts, really, yet so often dismissed in the name of (ironically) PROFIT, while being the most productive, cost-efficient means to that end. They're not novel ideas either, but ideas that definitely need to be reintroduced, and for those of us who actually want to be successful, implemented immediately. This is not rocket science. For instance, the pitch that most businesses preach but don't practice - "the customer is number one" (bet you never heard that one before). Yet it would seem to me, as a loyal consumer of both goods and services, (and I know you know what I'm talking about here) that really excellent customer service is the exception to the rule. And what about "word-of-mouth advertising" - the (get this) least expensive, least taken advantage of, yet most successful, cost-effective form of advertising there is. When's the last time you figured word-of-mouth into your advertising budget? Don't let these simple, common concepts fool you into thinking you don't need to read the book. I've been in customer service and/or sales all of my working life (which has been sufficient, thank you very much), and have always prided myself on providing just the type of excellent service the author talks about. For me, it was more than just a validation though; it provided me with the means, methods and incentive to implement these long-held beliefs in ways that will make my future company that much more successful. This book's impact in my life, beyond the future benefit to my own start-up company (I'm really looking forward to increasing market share and taking business away from my competitors just by being myself and being friendly!), was to make an evangelist out of me: I immediately bought three more books to send to friends and family, told a number of other people about it, and wrote this review. That should tell you that this guy knows of what he speaks. Buy it. Read it. Pass it on. What a wonderful world this would be if everyone did. Summary: Insightful! What does it take to get your customers to see the light, to praise your product like evangelists selling their creeds? How do you create customer evangelists whose word of mouth will convert other acolytes to your product? Authors Ben McConnell and Jackie Huba offer chapter and verse. They tell you how to encourage customers to preach your message for you. However, before consumers will take to the pulpit, you must have an excellent product or service that converts their thinking. There's good information here, though not much new. The last chapter sums everything up as nicely as a homily, and the appendix provides additional tips on e-mail marketing and jump-starting the evangelical process. The authors' penchant for name-coining adds little; at best it's confusing and at worst downright annoying ("word of mouse" is cute, but "Napsterizing"? "Customer Plus-Delta"?). We are is glad to see someone preaching the cause of being customer-oriented - we're already pretty faithful about that. Summary: |
