Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Probably My Favorite Book I first read Hasek's masterpiece almost 30 years ago in a shorter and more Bowdlerized translation. The Cecil Parrot edition is, needless to say, far preferable (it even contains a wonderful introduction including a discussion of Czech profanity as compared to that in English) and I've read it again and again since it came out in 1974. Shelby Foote said somewhere that every year he reads Proust as a sort of literary vacation. About ever 2 or 3 years I reread Svejk to cleanse my literary palate and it's always as fresh and as enjoyable as it was the first time. The dialogue, the characters and the situations in Svejk are, stated simply, the funniest I've ever read. Many other books have many merits in this regard, but none has approached Hasek in the sustained hilarity over 500 pages or more. The secret policeman, Bretschneider, Chaplain Katz, Sergeant Major Vanek, Cadet Biegler, Balloun and Lt. Dub are all memorable characters in their own right, but when they interact the result surpasses anything I have ever read for comedy. The episode involving a character with writer's block during his drafting of a prayer to be recited while administering Mr. Kokoska's pharmaceutical powders for cow flatulence is a classic rivalling Aristophanes or Rabelais. [I realize that sentence is confusingly prolix, so please read the book; it will be worth your while.] The term "laugh out loud" is overused and abused these days, but The Good Soldier Svejk will have you disturbing family and friends with repeated guffawing any time you are reading it nearby. I can't give a text any higher recommendation. Summary: One of the Two Best Novels of World War I Both of the best books on the First World War were written by the losing side...ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT and THE GOOD SOLDIER SCHWEIK tell the same story, but from different viewpoints. Schweik is a wise fool whose main goal is to avoid the greater foolishness around him. Hasek was a modern day Cervantes and this modern day Don Quixote interacts with a gallery of hilarious characters and their stories. I only regret that Hasek died before the book could be finished. Josef Lada's illustrations are a wonderful addition to the book, and it's a pleasure getting Cecil Parrott's translation in hardcover. Note: The earlier translations are not the complete book. Summary: Spun Our Serial Runs On and On OK, I'll admit up front that I only made it through 450 of this 800 page monster. As I was reading this, I saw the pile of unread books mounting alarmingly, and as I had more or less gotten the gist of it, I tucked the ribbon twixt the pages and set it aside. These (never-ending) stories of the Czech WW I soldier Svejk are considered a modern "must read." as they depict the trials and travails of a well-intentioned soldier muddling through the army beauracacy. The book functions as a satire of the war, the leaders, and the army. The problem is, these stories were written as serials, and as such, tend to go on and on and on.... so that Hasek could milk more money from them. In fact, they are unfinished, as the author died before he could dictate the end! So, I suggest dipping in to it, but not soaking too long as the antics don't vary much as the book moves along. Those with an particular interest in Czech culture or World War I might have greater reason to finish it than the general reader. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Groundbreaking Work This book is only outdated BECAUSE it was among the first in its class to explore the concept that a woman is allowed and supposed to gain pleasure from sex and deliver that idea to the public. In that regard it is an amazing piece of sexual education literature. The revised edition was released in the early 80s, but I believe it was written much earlier than that. It was written during a time when women (and men) were much less informed about the female anatomy, and there are numerous accounts in this book of women being embarassed by their orgasms because they were misunderstood. I believe that this book is helpful not only to the women of the time it was written but to women today. I read this book knowing full well what a G Spot was and what it did but I still found the history of it to be quite fascinating. In reading this book I not only came to more fully understand my own body and how it works but also what I can do to help it work more efficently and to my best sexual advantage. This book changed my sex life in an amazing way and for that I will always be grateful. Summary: No useful information This book was a boring weak monograph on a subject that needs new coverage. Instead of covering Fokorg's or Hammil's new theories and suggestions on stimulating the G-spot and explosive orgasm, this book brought me back to the 60s asking does a G-spot exist? and gave the reader endless detail to prove that it does. As a Gynecologist, I have been taught and I have taught that a G-spot exists for nearly 30 years. As a woman I was bored endlessly by a book that offered little to no new information on the G-spot and no information on stimulating the G-spot. Do not buy. Regardless, I praise Amazon.com for advocating freedom of expression even if it may involve bad reviews of books they sell. Summary: THIS BOOK IS NOW 0UT-DATED The belief that the G-spot does not exist is just as dogmatic as the insistance that it does! I suppose if the book gets people to talk and explore, it is almost worth the money, but every woman needs to find out about her own body, by herself and with her partner, and not try to live up the to expectations portrayed in this book - like the myth that G-spot stimulation will inevitably lead to a female ejaculation. Forget the super-sex pressures of sex books like this and just explore. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Breath of Fresh Air in Young Adult Literature Satellite Down is a well-written story touching on themes of commercialism and its impact on both teen-agers and the world in general. The main character, good-looking high school senior Patrick Sheridan, is swept into a world where the superficial rule over the intelligent. We get to see the once well-mannered, religious, naive texas native who believes in hard work and real journalism be morphed and changed by ideas of beauty and success as a television news reporter. He learns more about himself and what he really believes in through his mistakes. By the end, he begins to think he had it all right in the first place. Rob Thomas, creator/staff writer of "Veronica Mars" and author of three other books, demonstrates his best work through this interesting and inticing novel that any person living in todays modern world can relate to. In a book with a plot centering on hollywood and the "evils" of commercialism, one would expect something generic and unimaginative. But this is a wonderful story that is not sugar coated but at the same time, is not too angry or too accusative. It does not set the blame on consumerism but on the inability of humans to resist. It is a relatively fast read that will leave you thinking. Summary: Hoping the audience for Thomas' books grow Patrick is the editor of his high school newspaper and he is looking forward to a career in journalism, so when he gets a chance to enter a contest to become a TV reporter for Classroom Direct, a national TV shoe beamed to school by satellite he jumps at the chance. He figures it's a long shot, so why bother telling his parents, they wouldn't let him leave his dusty Texas town anyway. But Patrick is selected and convinces his parents to let me go out to LA and build on a promising journalism career. After Patrick realizes no one read his application(he was selected on looks alone), he becomes disillusioned and ultimately runs away on a soul searching journey. The book ends with Patrick very cynical and leave you with just a mirror to take a look at yourself. After the publication of _Rats Saw God_, I waited with greast anticipation for the new book by Thomas...after a few years have gone by, this book _Satellite Down_ has placed Thomas back on the top of he list of auhtors for teens. If you get a chance to listen to Johnny Heller narration of any of Thomas' books it's the perfect voice. Summary: lots to think about I finished this book several days ago and find myself still thinking about it. I highly recommend it to teens and adults who want something they can mull over for a while, as well as those who simply want a good read. My conclusions? I found it interesting that Thomas treats Patrick's disillusionment almost as a natural progression rather than a series of choices. Patrick doesn't seem to debate much about whether to do the things he does; he simply does them. Maybe living in Hollywood is like that for everyone--I've never been there--but I can't shake the feeling that this book tells us more about the author than it does the main character (no offense, Mr. Thomas). That's MHO; y'all read it and see if you agree. Summary: |
