Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: An Essay, Not a Book This review is of the audio CD (which is abridged). The short summary - globalization is the follow-on to the cold war. Friedman maintains that the economic collapse in Asia and the fall of the Berlin wall are all manifestations of the new world rules, and it's not a coincidence they happened about the same time. He identifies several changes in economics which have made the US economy more open and democratic. The internet is a big player in these changes because it is the medium by which economic openness is communicated. Many of Friedman's ideas I agree with, yet I felt something missing. The book's content doesn't feel complete. There is a bigger picture behind his observations, more complexity, and more depth. Much of the material I thought was over-explained where instead I would have liked more depth and insightful penetration. Friedman tries to come up with catch phrases for his various observations. Not all of them worked for me, especially "golden strait jacket." I'm still not sure why it's a strait jacket, nor why it's golden. Summary: Well written This book does incredibly well in explaining the complicated topic of globalization. It's very readable but is not dumbed-down in any manner. Mr. Friedman tries hard to be objective with his views of the world. Although on some chapters, you can tell that he belongs to the optimistic group of the globalization debate. Whether or not you agree with his perspective, it still is worthwhile to read to see if his pronouncements will atleast challenge your own position. Summary: Subtitled: "Globalism for Dummies" This is basically an explanation of the world for 60-year-old people who have had their heads in the sand for the past 30 years. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: very handy I consider myself beginner in spanish. The only sentence that I can confidently say is "Habla usted ingles?". I took this book and Oxford spanish dictionary to my eight day trip to Guadalajara, Mexico. This book became so handy that I left the Oxford dictionary in my hotel room. Besides words and phases, it provide menu reader and other very useful information about Mexico. i.e. Under a word "phone", it describes how to use public phone in Mexico. I didn't realize most public phones only accept phone card and only the phone card from their company. I suggest buying Telmax phone card, since you can only find Telmax public phones. This book is well worth the price. Summary: Quite useful The first time I went to Mexico I tried my Galician on the people and I did not get anywhere. They simply could not understand me. Recently I have been back and took this guide with me. It made a lot of difference. I managed to communicate and the Mexican people I talked to looked happy I spoke their language instead of trying to impose the language of Spain on them. This guide covers all the expected areas, like food, shopping, accommodation, etc. It is very good, but more phrases would be even more helpful. Then you could use the vocabulary lists in more combinations and enlarge what you can say. Perhaps there will be an extended edition with more of it. I will buy it too! Summary: Worth the Price Though I would not suggust a nonspaniish speaker to enter Mexico with only this limited dictionary, it is a great suppliment. It has very useful words that are common in Mexico plus some great slang. It also has little bits of info next to certain words to aid in its correct usage. I spent an extensive amount of time in Mexico and got this little book's worth many times over. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Insightful ! This is a great manufacturing love story in which Toyota, an automaker clearly in love with its product, decides to go after the U.S. luxury car buyer, a suitor who has repeatedly ignored its advances. To get America's attention, Toyota must first re-invent itself. It must make itself more handsome (through better styling), improve its physique (be faster, stronger and need less maintenance) and prove its financial management skill (by selling great cars for less). Because time is fleeting and the buyer has many other suitors (Mercedes Benz, Jaguar, Nissan, Volvo), Toyota must work fast before its intended lover makes an irrevocable decision and buys someone else's car. Like some other love stories, this is repetitive and suffers from some plain old sloppy editing. But it makes you want to test-drive a Lexus to see what causes such a sensation. We recommend this book to CEOs and sales and marketing executives who dream of producing revolutionary, successful products for the global marketplace. And who would mind getting a little consumer love? Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Invaluable! I would have been lost in China without this book! It gives the most common words needed by a traveler and except for the short conversational sentences, shows the words in Chinese script as well as pinyin and phonetic English. Having the words in Chinese is important because when you can't pronounce them, you can then point to them! Chinese friends told me that some words were wrong, and indeed the word for 'Bandaid' was wrong- using that got only some sort of long, hardly sticky tape, however overall, the book was excellent, well laid out and with most of the words and phrases one needs to survive in China. Summary: Excellent beginner's dictionary, very good phrasebook The book opens with an excellent 45 page section on basic ways of forming common sentences: yes/no questions, questions about how much or how many, handling verbs, et c. The English to Chinese dictionary gives 160 pages with examples, and notes on usage, and some cultural notes to explain nuances of meaning. The Chinese words are given in pinyin, and a phonetic spelling (adapted to Chinese sounds but to American ideas of how a sound might be spelled), and Chinese characters -- so if you cannot successfully pronounce one you can point to it and people anywhere in China will be able to read the characters. Then come 50 pages of Chinese to English alphabetized by Pinyin spelling. When you achieve mastery of Mandarin you'll use dictionaries arranged by Chinese characters but I can assure you that would do me no good at this point. Useful signs like "information desk" or "International departures" are collected in one section, and menu items in another. Signs are organized thematically with Chinese character spellings -- since you may see them that way, or you may need to point to one in the book to ask a local where it is -- and they are also in pinyin, and English. Menu items get all of that plus a phonetic spelling since you are more likely to try to say them. All very nice. However, this is much more a dictionary than a phrasebook. The rival Chinese Phrases for Dummies has many more phrases, very usefully organized by theme. They are given in Chinese by pinyin and a suggestive phonetic spelling. The Dummies book also gives basic grammar and probably more helpful advice on pronunciation than the Rough Guide and it gives very much more help on how to talk to a waiter, for example, and it has a long section on how to deal with medical questions (which the Rough Guide barely touches) and other topics. Dummies collects a number of especially useful idioms at the end, mostly to make you more graceful or polite. Plus Dummies is laid out in a large and systematically varied typeface which will help you to find a phrase on a page if you are bit flustered, rushed, or tired. If you want this kind of book at all then you should probably buy both the Rough Guide and the Dummies. They are cheap. A warning: Many beginners' dictionaries try to "help" you by not using the official pinyin romanization -- the official Chinese method of putting Chinese into the basic western alphabet. Instead they give something between their idea of how pinyin ought to be done, and their own idea of a phonetic spelling. Some omit the tones altogether. Do not even look at anything that omits the tones. Mandarin, like all varieties of Chinese, is incomprehensible without the tones. As to pinyin, there are serious problems with making it universal in China: It works better for Mandarin than for other dialects such as Cantonese; and it fails to distinguish between homophones so that it works poorly for people's names and for literature. But the usage in China seems decisive to me: China means to become the world's number one tourist destination. They know that will not happen unless they include western alphabetic spellings on important street signs and shop signs and so on. And they have chosen to use pinyin. They use English too in especially international places, but not everywhere. When you go to China you will see pinyin and you will not see some American publisher's idea of how it should have been done instead. So you may prefer some other phonetic system but I want to learn the official hanyu pinyin that I will see there. It is just a small investment of time learning, for example, to say "ch" when you see q, plus you get help with this in both the Rough Guide and the Dummies since they give phonetic spellings along with pinyin. I have not seen the The Rough Guide to Mandarin Chinese Dictionary Phrasebook 3 published by Rough Guides; Updated edition (May 29, 2006). It is just a few pages shorter than this and is probably just a minor update. Summary: A Must Have Guide to Mandarin I spent a month in Beijing this past summer and this particular guide was absolutely invaluable. I went to China with about 30 other Americans and we all agreed that of all of the guides we had, this book was by far the easiet to use. It provides short phrases in Mandarin, Pinyin and English. I used the book to buy "Bandaids" and special order a birthday cake. You simply have to point to the phrases that are applicable. I also liked the book because of its compact size. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Terrific book! Everyone should have one! Everyone should get the repair manual for their car from Haynes or Chilton. These are great books that provide very detailed information for you to make most repairs. I firmly believe it's a good idea to use this as a reference to at least learn to do basic maintenance. This book will end up saving you a lot of money and it will ensure that your car lasts for a long time. For the more experienced do-it-yourselfer, you already know what a great book this is for auto repair, so there's no need to convince you. If not to do your own repair work, consider this to help you understand your car and better communicate with your mechanic. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Extremely useful for learners of Vietnamese too! Extremely useful and probably the first dictionary-cum-phrasebook for all Vietnamese learners (or just travellers in Vietnam) who can read English. A comprehensive English-Vietnamese word list covers all common words used in daily conversation, in some words simple dialogues are provided. The Vietnamese-English section is rather weak. This book is not as popular as the Lonely Planet phrasebook which is really a ptiy because it's much better. Whenever I met some other travellers using the LP phrasebook (Vietnamese) I showed them this one of mine, all of them were impressed and hoped to buy this instead! Summary: Very Helpful I would definately recommend this book to anyone traveling to Vietnam and wanting to converse with the locals. I took this book on my first trip to Vietnam, knowing only basic Vietnamese. I was able to have conversations with the people I met. The book is very easy to read, and the dictionary is English/Vietnamese & Vietnamese/English. The English/Vietnamese dictionary gives helpful phrases for each of the words too. There's also a pronounciation guide to help you say the words correctly. A must have! Summary: Better guide book than some. The book is a travlers phrase book and mini dictionary. Small enough to fit in the pocket.I think it's much better than the Lonely Planet Vietnamese phrase book and it costs a dollar less too! There are "cuss words" titled Coloquialism on page 142. I can't imagine why anyone would want to use them on a trip (i.e., don't do it). So forget that page, and enjoy the rest of the book. Plenty of tips for travelers, like using mosquito repellent after dark because of the possibility of Malaria.A very useful little book. Summary: |
