Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Long, dense, and at first look tedious - but absolutely worth it. This book was used in my AP Bio class, where my teacher's constant reminders to "read the book" usually went unnoticed. This isn't because Campbell's book is necessarily boring or difficult to understand; in fact, the situation is quite the opposite. Campbell delves into the concepts of biology with more than adequate depth and breadth for the subject, offering both the basics and the details necessary to survive AP Bio (and, from the way my AP Exam went, college freshman Bio, too). The sad fact and only noticeable drawback, however, is this: all of this information is found in an alarmingly large, heavy book, which can be off-putting to even the most avid readers. (Campbell does have a shorter, lighter book that makes for an easier read, but the "baby Campbell" sacrifices the detail necessary for AP Bio in order to make the book less difficult to get through.) Even with the large amount of material found in Campbell's book, it's an interesting read that covers just about everything biology-related. Conclusion: The detail involved in every chapter makes this book an ideal pick for an AP Bio class, save for the fact that lazier students just won't ever want to pick the thing up. Summary: THOROUGH, ENCOMPASSING, WELL WRITTEN ... I found this book very thorough and well written. What made it so enjoyable is wasn't dry and boring; the colloquial style made it very readable, especially for lay people. I work in a related field - as a medical doctor - but, sad as it is, I sometimes like to read about it for fun! This book was the perfect blend: informative and straight forward yet also reasonably entertaining. Most important, it is accurate and truthful with a good sense of the latest cutting edge research. Summary: Incredible I was studying for the National Medical Assessment Test in my country and i used this book to review my biology. Note, however that my pre-med was a humanities degree and economics. So, I really needed to bone up on my biology. I was intimidated by the size of this book and was reluctant to purchase it but after reading so many reviews i relented. And i was very happy i did so. I just couldn't put this book down. It was thick and the letters were so small but it was also accessible and comprehensive while providing in-depth information. Biology really comes to life with this book. Everything is put into context and ideas truly build up on one another. Unlike other biology books I've read, other branches of science (e.g. chemistry & physics) are introduced to show how all of science are indeed connected to facilitate a deeper understanding of science itself and not just biology. It even explained many ideas in organic chemistry more clearly and succintly than the intro to org chem book i used. Some have commented that this book is too thick and i have to disagree. This is not a reference book (it could be a good one i think) but an introduction. As an introductory text it has to lay a solid foundation in understanding the basics innerworkings of biology and how all of it is connected to other sciences. This it does well. I have found that the book usually only uses one short paragraph to introduce one organ/organelle/cell/a step in a chemical cycle/chemical/etc. to describe it, what affects it, and its functions. I do not think the authors could've done any better. People who want a shorter text i think really want a reference book or a bio book that just lists down facts with little or no connections/explanations. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: buy 6th Unless your professor requires that you use this edition (which they shouldn't), buy the 6th edition, which is cheaper. The only difference between the two is slight text changes and rearrangements of the chapters. It's not worth your money unless you are drawn to this edition (trust me, you're not). Oh, and the study guides aren't worth it if you actually go to class and read the text. Summary: So good you can read it for fun! This book is written in such an interesting and easy to follow manner that you could literally read it for entertainment. Many times I forgot to take notes because the richness, depth and flow of the text made me feel like I was reading a novel instead of a text. This by no means implies that the book is simple. In fact, it probably contains more, if not equal, info than it's competitors. The main difference is in how it presents this information. Go with this book for biology, it'll turn you into that bio nerd that you've always wanted to become! Summary: Best textbook ever! This is such a great book that it's hard to believe that it is a textbook. Our class used it in our Biology course in college. It's very clearly written. It has a huge amount of info., that's probably much too much for a single year long course, but at the same time it is so well presented and so interesting that I plan on reading all of the chapters we didn't cover in class, during the summer vacation. The book is beautifully illustrated with full color photos, and tons of very usefull diagrams, charts, drawings etc. Each chapter has a short summary that's a great tool for reviewing main concepts. There are questions at the end of each chapter which often are pretty tough. The text comes with a CD that has a lot of really great interactive activities, and killer quizzes, in which I could never do better than a measly 78% (I actually did far better on class exams). I highly recommend getting the study guide for this edition, because not only does it contain more quizzes, questions, and diagrams for you to fill, but also it is a blessing when you don't have the time to read a whole chapter in the text (they can be lengthy). The study guide contains an abridged version of each chapter, which saved me a few times, plus it's a slightly different take on the same subject, which can help if you have trouble understanding something in the text. I love this book so much that I plan on keeping it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Everyone Should Have a Marley in their Life I'm a big animal lover and have 2 dogs who I adore -- one a Lab mix. I'd heard great things about Marley & Me, but just hadn't gotten around to reading it. I'm currently home on bedrest and have been reading up a storm, so I was really game for reading Marley & Me. I loved John Grogan's recaps of all Marley's antics, his messes and his triumphs. I knew as I got to the ending, I'd cry and boy did I. What John went through in the days leading up to Marley's death and his tribute to his loyal friend, reminded me of my wonderful cat, Buster and what I went through with him before he died. I salute John Grogan for writing such a heartwarming story and being able to capture Marley's spirit in written word. Not many authors are successful at this ability. My spirit felt so uplifted after I finished reading it. Summary: Who couldn't Love a Lab? I thought this was such a great book. Not many books could make me laugh as hard as this one! I think this book is a great book for any person that loves dogs or wants a book to make them laugh. I have to admit I cried during this book too, but this book was great. I think because I owned a nuts Lab like Marley, I really knew how he felt. I got this book for Christmas and herd what a great book it was, but I didn't get it till June because everybody else in my family read it, and they all said the same thing, that this was the best book they have ever read. So, I give this book 5 stars, but if I could I would give it more. Summary: Marley & Me - A story of love and loyalty. A humorous (and touching at times) account of John and Jenni Grogan when they adopted Marley, a labrador retriever, into their household. John is a great story-teller who makes the book very easy to read. John brings you back to when it all happened, and throughout the period as his family grew. You also get to read the joy and kookiness Marley brought to the whole family. By the end of the book (which ending you can probably guess), I'm sure you'll be feeling as touched as I was -- when you realise that the impending finale is coming to the old Marley, who you just read hours ago, was a boisterous, silly dog. Truly and highly recommended. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Psychology - Not Scripture For those wanting a pop-psychology quick fix to the complicated heart of a woman, maybe this book is for you. But if you're looking for biblically sound answers to the questions you have as a Christian woman - STEER CLEAR! While there are parts of the book that have merit, you have to wade through so much false teaching to get to the good stuff. You have to ask yourself - is it really worth it? The answer is "no" in my opinion, and my Pastor agreed. For those whose desire is to search the Scriptures for your answers I would recommend Beth Moore's "Breaking Free" or "A Woman's Heart, God's Dwelling Place" God Bless You. Summary: A goat's beard, a rusty nail, a single flake of oatmeal.... are things that you would better spend your hard earned cash on than this insipid book. "oohhh.... I'ma woman! All I wants is to be purty and have my knight in shining armor! Who needs to vote?!?!" This is why I despise most christian women. Summary: A True Inspiration In all the times we interpreted the scripture to mean the woman was less than the man, this book inspires woman to have an understanding that does not overshadow the role of the man but proves the importance of the woman. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: I'm in Biology heaven Ah, the holy grail of textbooks: To find a textbook that is completely clear, explains all aspects of the subject, lets you understand rather than just memorize so you can think independently on the subject and actually enjoyable to read. Textbooks like those are incredibly rare and they are worth their weight in gold once you find them. Looks like we found one for biology. Summary: Poor Organization I decided to buy this book instead of borrowing from the library because of the pretty colorful pictures it has. However, I regret spending $100 on this book because the text is poorly orgnanized. Although some chapters are written well, you will see content are scrambled within some chapters making it hard to take notes. There are also errors like they mentioned that Th cell help cellular response, but they ever tell you how. The activation gate and inactivation gate mentioned in the neuron chapters are confusing. The mentioned it on the text, but they don't show it on the pictures. I need to admit that their animation, tutorial in their web site are awesome. I would recommed the campbell book instead Summary: Life Review THIS BOOK HAS AMAZINGLY USEFUL DIAGRAMS AND FIGURES THAT HELP THE READER VISUALIZE AND UNDERSTAND THE SUBJECT. Summary: |
| The 7 Habits Of Highly Effective Teens

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Character Beats out All Averages, Hands Down His emphasis on character as the basis of effective living -- and a good basis for life -- is a unifying theme that will pull together all of the other points Sean Covey places in his book. This book is no copycat of his father's book; it is sharply readable and entertaining, as he promises at the outset. It's not hard to forget all the reasons not to be self-centered, materialistic, petty, and all the other bad things, when you keep in mind the idea of having good character as the basis for learning. In this way, too, the student can keep in mind possible explanations for parent behavior; they are reacting to stimuli that include but are not limited to things the reader may be up to. Not that parents are perfect -- not all of them, anyway. Some parents should be taken to the cleaners to dry in the sun, at least for a while. However, all other things being equal, the parent who does not aim at least part of his or her relationship with youth on the overall development and growth of his or her teen may be readily persuaded to see the light and accept the child for who he or she is by throwing this book at them. I have to give The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens about 4 stars, but it was a toss-up. It doesn't compare well with War and Peace, but as self-improvement reading it is hard to beat the seven habits book. The title probably required a release from the father-author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People -- or a great father-son relationship, anyway. On second thought, the publisher would have required the release, regardless. Almost nothing gets 5 stars. However, if you know somebody who is -- or if you are -- feeling messed up about which end is up and it seems that everything is racing through the mind too quickly, then slow down and look at the fundamentals, a little. Next, give this book to your parents, it should be mandatory reading as part of the parent licensing program I would propose that somebody or some group, church, religion or philosophy administer. Summary: I love this book Wow this is one of those books that when you first look at it it looks boring its not. I ran for the Miss pagent of my town. "In my case Miss Yucca Valley" I was told that I was going to read in this book. I love to read so I didnt think much of it. I began to read every day. I fell in love with the ideas that this book holds. I began to read every chance I got. My friends were laughing at me because all I talked about was this book. The lessons in this story really taught me something. Every teen should read it. Summary: Simply put, it works It's right, these are highly effective habits for not only teenagers, but anyone. I was disappointed with this miniature edition, not because there is anything wrong with it, but I did not expect it to be so small. I recommend the regular sized book. You will undoubtedly be an improved man if you read this book. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Everyone should own a copy of this book. This is a truely excellent book, full of essential information for ordinary people trying to live a healthy and active life. Do yourself a favour.. Summary: Interesting, broad spectrum and highly recommended! This is a unique way of presenting valuable anatomical information. It seems that this is a successful and accessible way in order the authors to reach and educate the masses. The book focuses on anatomy and how your major organs function. I think that you will learn at least a few curious tidbits of information even if you are quite familiar with how your body functions. I agree that this is a very big book but everything is down-to-earth and easy to understand and apply. The book is even appropriate to read with your children. The two medical doctors who are the authors of the book made the extra step to give several tools such as questionnaires to access the degree of healthiness of your lifestyle. Most people will find after that valuable advice, which may improve how you feel and look. In general this is an original, appropriate for an average reader and quite valuable book, which I feel confident to recommend. Another bestseller "Scientfically guaranteed male multi-orgasms and ultimate sex" also reveals numerous key factors and processes that have a dramatic impact on your body, health and pleasure. That's why I highly recommend both books. Summary: Quality Book This book reads just as it was advertised. It is full of quality life information, lightly lined with humor to make it more reader friendly. A suggested read for anyone wanting to make themselves a priority. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: In awe I reluctantly came across "Life of Pi," while convalescing on Polo beach in Maui from two broken ribs. So, a sorry surfing accident landed me in the pages of one of the most beautiful stories I've ever read and I devoured it in a day and a half. This book is amazing! And is so infused with life. The greatest literature is always that which you can draw a common thread to yourself throughout and "Life of Pi" does not disapoint. No spoilers here, just a hearty recomendation; you simply must read this book. Summary: Brilliant! Yann Martel dazzles with his description, and leaves you tormented with questions! This is one of the best books I have read in quite some time! For me, it is up there with Gabriel Garcia Marquez's 'Love in the Time of Cholera' and Daphne du Maurier's 'Rebecca'. It is story-telling that is reminiscent of bedtime tales - so wonderfully descriptive, yet grounded in a reality that demands hope, faith and will. I liken it to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, because although it is not technically magical realism, it requires you to have faith in more than scientific reason to believe that a young 16-year old would survive on a boat with a tiger! The book is split into three parts, and I found that my interest in the book picked up after the first part. Truly a page-turner! The ending is poignant, and is a true character test. How pragmatic are you? How strong is your faith? Yann Martel leaves you longing for more pages and wishing you knew the real answer to the ambiguous finale. Summary: Questionable beginning, Superb Ending As a college student, I really dont have any time to read pleasure books unless its the summer, so I have to really pick out good books or else I feel that I have wasted my time... and this book was NO waste of time. As some may agree, the little was a bit slow, but the part about Pi's religious adventures stirs it up a bit. The book doesnt really get going though until the 2nd phase. Here is where the action picks up, and the reader's interest does as well. The last 20 pages of the book are the bread and butter of this book though. I dont want to spoil it to anyone, but its the type of book that you will want to discuss with your peers, no matter how old you are. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a great summer read. Summary: |
