Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Adventures of Tintin : Volume 1 I love it! Sometimes I think this is the best books out of the Tintin series. I think people of all ages should try Tintin, starting with this book. Summary: Great! I've read every single "main" Tintin book! they are all G-rrrrrrrrr-eat. The wey they are written are stupendous! any way i love every single tintin book Summary: Great value for great books I bought these for my seven year old son who was introduced to Tintin through a regular sized version at a friend's place. These 3-in-1 volumes are great for these reasons: - You get 3 stories for almost the same price as 1. - The books are more portable and easier to handle for kids - The hardcover also makes them more durable than the regular softcover ones. The only negative is the smaller font and picture size, but if you can deal with that, these are great! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Not for Beginners I'm surprised at the rave reviews that everyone is giving this book. I have this book and I've been reading through it and it starts off fine as it has you build a simple application in the beginning. I found that promising because I've never used Lotus Notes before so I thought this would be an excellent book. The only problem is that once you're finished with that chapter, it goes from good to really bad. The book then becomes a reference manual for the different aspects of Lotus Notes. It provides no tutorials whatsoever as one astute reviewer on here points out. If I wanted this kind of reference I could have read the help documentation for Lotus Notes. This book is only useful for people who have mastered many aspects of Lotus Notes and even then its explanations of aspects like commands are dry and not put into context. Summary: 5 words for a 5 star item go and buy it NOW...! waiting for a ND7 version - Summary: Must Own Book for All Domino Developers Before I go any further, I have to disclose up front that I personally and professionally know all three authors who contributed to Lotus Notes and Domino 6 Programming Bible (Brian Benz and Rocky Oliver, 2003, John Wiley And Sons, 1032 Pages, ISBN 0764526111). And Rocky, Brian and Richard will all tell you that I would still be the first one to call it like I see it, regardless of relationships. So with that in mind, to every person who works with Lotus Notes and Domino, regardless of version, and to every person who has ever posted to the Lotus developerWorks forum asking about good reference material for development: buy this book and put it on your bookshelf. I may approach coding somewhat differently than the authors, but that is the nature of all application developers. But this book does something often overlooked in too many technical books: it not only talks about how things work in Notes/Domino, it also puts out best practices and explanations for these best practices based on the authors vast depth and breadth of experience. Make no mistake about it, this book is a tome. You are not going to read it like a novel. You are going to pick and choose the pieces you need based on your experience levels and problems you are trying to solve. The publisher wisely categorizes this book as a "beginner to advanced" level, a point I think one early reviewer of this book missed. In a systematic format, the authors walk the reader from the very beginning of Lotus Notes as a product to the point where even the most advanced developers can benefit from the content. Lotus Notes and Domino is all about design items and objects, stored as 'notes'. So the authors make no assumption of the reader's experience level. They start at the very beginning by laying the framework for a simple application. They then explain the notes storage model, which is often a hard concept for may people to grasp, especially outside auditors and non-Notes people. As a reader you are then given a detailed thorough explanation of the Notes//Domino integrated development environment, and then even more detail on each design element that makes up an application. For the advanced readers, there is detail coverage of data integration with Lotus Enterprise Integrator (LEI), Java and XML. As I said earlier in this review, this book will be of value regardless of what version of Notes/Domino you are running because of the coverage of the underlying concepts surrounding development on this platform. Sure it will not help you with the introduction of DB2 as an optional back-end data store, but that is not fundamental to the platform (yet). There is one, to me, glaring weakness in the book and I discussed this with Rocky. The book is huge and is packed full of great content. But the layout of the book by the publisher makes it hard for tips, notes, and new feature highlights to really jump out of the page and grab you. This is not the fault of the author's, but is something the publisher should look at down the road. A Tip for Readers of this Book This is a book that will get used a lot and as such, will fall out of the binding because of its size. The first thing I like to do with a book like this is beat the binding to the punch. I will remove the pages from the binding and put them in a three ring binder or binders. This will make it much easier to handle and give it a much longer shelf life. Who Should Own and Read This Book? This book should be on the desk of every Lotus Notes and Domino developer that cares about their work. It should also be in the possession of every internal and/or external auditor charged with auditing Lotus Notes and Domino applications, so that they understand what they are auditing. The Scorecard Double Eagle on a long par 5 playing into the wind. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: This book is awsome The lotus seed is about someone's grandmother who gets a lotus seed to remember her emperor. It takes place in Vietnam. It has lots of information obout what they used to flee from the Vietnam war. I think Tatsuro Kiuchi did a good job with the illustrations. I think every one from 5-8 should read this book. Summary: Symbol of a Lotus Seed This book helps me remember more about Vietnam and why I appreciate my culture so much. The significant symbolism of the lotus seed is the culture Vietnam and what the woman endurance in her past. Ba picked out a lotus seed from the imperial garden because of its beautiful and fresh scent. The lotus seed has never left her side as she carries it with her through the tragedy times and moved to a new country after the Vietnam War. One of her grandchildren planted the lotus seed in the backyard and it grew into a beautiful lotus flower. The beauty of it reminds Ba of her country. This is definitely one of the best children's book I have ever read. The images are beautifully drawn as they describe Vietnam and the story. The symbolism of the lotus seed reminds me of my culture and I should never forget it. I really like how the author added a Vietnamese poem at the back. A must read for all young and old! Summary: The Lotus Seed This book is touching. The grandma passes on the lotus seed to her grandson. One day, she sees a lotus flower in her backyard and it made her remember her ruler. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Historical masterpiece comic album Written in 1936 , The Blue Lotus is the sequel to the colourful Cigars of the Pharaoh. In the Cigars of the Pharaoh , Tintin has almost succeeded in smashing an international gang of drug traffickers , managing to capture all of them except the leader who mysteriously crashes over a ravine. His further investigations lead him to China , then under threat from Japanese agression. Tintin comes up against a madman infected with a dart that sends the recipient insane , enraged British colonists out for revenge after having been humiliated by Tintin and the Japanese army , with the chief villain of the piece being Japanese businessman Mitsuhirato. This album drew protest form the Japanese government of the time , and was praised by Chiang Kai Shek , President of the Republic of China. However, it was banned by China's Communist regime until 1984 , due to some of their own insane Maoist reasoning-and even then was still chopped up and heavily edited. Other albums having been banned by the Communist dictatorship in China where Tintin in tibet (for recognizing tibetan culture) , Tintin in the Land of the Soviets (for exposing Communism)and Tintin in the Congo ('Colonialist'). Summary: Tintin takes on a vast conspiracy and tries to keep from getting Shanghaied The Blue Lotus is a sequel to Cigars of the Pharaoh, in which Tintin struggled with an international gang of smugglers in north Africa and India. In the current volume, the intrigue with the smugglers takes Tintin from India to Shanghai where his life is constantly in danger as the smugglers try to stop him from finding a cure for their secret poison of madness. There is a racial bias in this volume in favor of the Chinese of Shanghai over the British and Japanese who are portrayed as scheming and self-centered. Herg must have sympathized with these colonized people who were being threatened by rising Japanese aggression. Tintin's friendly adversaries, the twin Thompson brothers, detectives, make their appearance in this volume and there is a very funny scene where they try to disguise themselves as Chinese in pre-reform costumes and become the center of attention. The heroes of the book are the elderly Wang and young Chang, two remarkably clever and resourceful allies. This series is great at portraying the world between the two great wars in a way that is simple yet respectful. The adventures are well crafted and the color illustrations are sumptuous in detail. Shanghai really comes to life in this book with its opium dens, busy streets, and tea shops. Summary: Les Aventures de Tintin at their goosebumpiest... Picking up where its predecessor Cigars of the Pharaoh left off, The Blue Lotus (the fifth installment in the Adventures of Tintin series) chronicles boy reporter Tintin's adventures in Shanghai. It is notable for many reasons, particularly in that it introduces the character of Tintin's Chinese friend, Chang Chong-Chen, who is to figure prominently in an installment of the series much later on. Masterfully drawn and beautifully suspenseful as always, The Blue Lotus is arguably the most chilling of the Tintin stories. He and Snowy seem to be in more peril here than in any other story with the possible exception of Tintin in America (the threat of their heads being chopped off rears its, uh, head more than once). Possibly not a bedtime story, this one, but it's a fantastic read. There are two more notable things unique to this story. First of all, readers will most likely notice that Herge re-drew the first few pages (most likely to jive with the ending of Cigars of the Pharaoh, which had also been redone), and that Tintin undergoes a conspicuous metamorphosis from his later-edition, cuter self into an earlier, rounder-headed, pinprick-eyed version. Second, this story features Thomson and Thompson in Shanghai what they believe to be local street wear, and if for no other reason, one should peruse The Blue Lotus just for those few panels! Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Some people are missing the point of this book . . . This is not a conventional biography . . . and it was never meant to be. What it is: chapters of experiences in Goldie's life and what she learned from each one. It's a great book . . . written with a sense of fun, yet with an underlying stability and with the knowledge that family and relationships are the most important elements of our lives. This book will offer you insights and reading it will give you a sense of calm. I highly recommend it. Summary: Not so much about Goldie as her The very words spiritual journey mean you're in for many chapters of searching for who knows what, but searching, searching, searching, and it's not that fascinating. Hawn says very little, sometimes nothing at all, about most of her career and her three main relationships. Still, you get the impression she is one of the least-Hollywood people in Hollywood. Somehow she came from a close and loving family, even though her parents didn't stay together. Unlike other celebrities who were sexually abused as a child and never told anyone and suffered as a result, she screamed when it was happening and told her mother immediately and that was the end of that. She seems like a very happy, outgoing person who truly enjoys other people, so why she is on this constant spiritual journey to find something is a mystery to me. I admire her for never getting her [...] enlarged. And she very tactfully doesn't say bad things about anybody except Al Capp. I was surprised to find her as religious as she is. At the same time, this means the book is a bit dull. Summary: Goldie Hawn reveals her unique self Goldie Hawn is a Hollywood anomaly and a tremendous survivor in the world where anyone over the age of 21 is considered has been. This book is witty and riveting. While the book reveals a lot about the respect Goldie has for all the loved ones in her life, it does tend to skip over many parts of her life. I don't know she does out of respect for privacy. Even without the missing pieces to her puzzle this book will give you a revealing look into a multifaceted woman filled with laughter, joy, faith, hope and intellect. It also reveals a woman who is deep and complex but not afraid to show her insecurities. One word could sum up this book and that is unique. But isn't that who Goldie is a unique individual. Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Trinh Xuan Thuan failed evil test Prf. Trinh Xuan Thuan did not believe in Buddhism because it is THE truth. He knew the only cosmological model that fits Buddhist cosmology is the oscilatory model (Big Bang, Big Crunch, Big Bang, Big Crunch, ...) but this model is scientifically NOT proven. Prf. Trinh believes Buddhism as the "cosmic religion" (he quoted Einstein) because he did not pass the EVIL (specially evil in religions; he quoted the crusades, the jihad, etc.) test: i.e. why evil, why God did not intefere, etc..... To me, Trinh's Quantum failed Trinh's Lotus...... Summary: Enlightenment - Now in Paperback! This dazzling spectacle of literary genius brought tears to my eyes. Its graceful picture of the universe transcends the pages so that the reader may feel the heartbeat of all creation become one with their own. Summary: Contemporary Physics, Buddhism, and Metaphysics I was a bit skeptical upon first seeing this book. I worried about another floofy book about New Age/Western Buddhism. Thankfully, my fears were unfounded. This book is a fairly dense "argument" between the present positions of astrophysics/quantum physics and the Buddhist metaphysics. I'm a philosopher by trade and I read a lot of popular science books (especially in physics) so I managed well with the text. However, I think it may frustrate some persons without any background. So, ultimately, unless you are somewhat familiar with contemporary physics, you might want, regrettably, to skip this one. The Buddhist in the book is a very intelligent chap, more than capable of explaining/defending his position. And he successfully presents Buddhism in a very intellectual manner. I learned a lot about the Buddhist position with regard to cosmology - which is wonderful because that's what I hoped to get out of the book. I think this book should quiet some of the stereotypes of Buddhists... and it would be most enjoyed by persons who do not draw a hard absolute line between natural science and religious practice. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Domino Developers (new and exp.) Will Like This Book I was a Lotus Notes email user for a long time, and then got asked to start creating some small databases for my department. I had hacked for a while and had the basics down, and then this book really helped me figure out the little nits that it takes to build good applications. Not sure why the "admin" types are saying this is a lousy book ... it is clearly intended for people creating databases and not for admins. Anyway, if you're a new developer or programmer, I think this book will help you. Summary: Not what i expected..... This books is for users and maybe lowerlevel helpdesk people. This book is not suitable for admins. Summary: Masterpiece! I thought this book was superb. It covered a wide variety of topics with much depth and is a great resource. I've read several chapters now and have a much better understanding of Notes and Domino 6. Many books out there don't do as good a job as this one does. This book has it all! I would certainly recommend this book to anyone wanting to master Notes/ Domino. Summary: |
