Some studies have shown that excessive coffee drinking can lead to fertility and pregnancy problems, birth defects, low birth weight babies or SIDS, as well as fibrocystic breast tumors. It was a real eye opener, I'll say. It's highly recommended. Summary: some good information Some of the ideas in this book is really informative. I found the book a bit tedious to read but the diet sounds like a good one and I am getting ready to start using the diet plan. Summary: The Rice diet works! Although I have been temporarily sidetracked, I lost 8 lbs in the first week. And most of all I was never hungry. Long term, this diet provides a bit of all the things I have a tendency to crave.... so it is easy to stick to. However, too many require unusual spices and ingredients for the ordinary cook. On the other hand, some of the recipes do use everyday ingredients. Many of the recipes also require the use of a blender or food processor. That involves extra steps and cleanup. Also, I was under the impression that whole wheat pastas had a lower GI index than regular pastas, and she doesn't use these in her recipes. What I needed was a low GI cookbook with ordinary ingredients and simple recipes. Summary: The best diet concept This is the best book I found after the following Atkins, Weight Watchers and The Zone diet. I don't have to starve now and I can eat all green food list food as far as I feel satisfied. For the past year, I've tried to lose weight, unsuccessfully. I had watched George Stella on the Food Network, and enjoyed the recipes. I had tried Atkins, managed to bore myself into a coma, get constipated, and actually gain weight. But what I noticed from watching George (besides his family's truly inspirational success losing weight) was the inclusion of vegetables, fruits, and above all, flavor. I love to cook, and this was the first time when going low carb made sense to me. It's easy to "shop the outer aisles" & work with the "approved" list of ingridients. I bought this cookbook, and the newest one, and am happily cooking my way to good health. All I can say is try the cheese cake recipe. No deprivation here! Summary: A bargain at the price My sister and I each bought both of Georges' books. They are both very informative. We liked his easy going way of doing things. His program is easy to follow and his recipes are also easy to make. We have made several of them so far and all have been good. Especially like his muffin recipes and the lasagna is very tasty, didn't even miss the noodles. My sis really likes the baked zucchini fries. Summary: A sane and lifelong approach to low carb living After the dust settles and the trendoids and fad diet followers have gone, Stella's book will remain a shining example of the way everyone should eat for good health. The story of the Stella family's weight loss is compelling and inspiring, and his delicious and well illustrated recipes prove that low carb is so much more than consuming endless portions of fatty meats. As I'm sitting here writing this review I'm thinking about another book I read called "The Truth About Caffeine: How Companies That Promote it Deceive Us and What We Can Do About It" by Marina Kushner. Consuming caffeine has far deadlier consequences. There is ample evidence that all of the disturbances that adults experience through caffeinated coffee can also occur in children who imbibe excessive amounts of caffeinated beverages, Kushner writes. And, of course, "excessive" levels for children are always much lower. It is a factor in a multiple of problems from stomach problems to dizziness to the inability to focus or sleep restfully to cancer. As for the book, it's pure pleasure reading!!! They sound good, but she uses non-fat products frequently. A good low carb diet needs good fats included in it. If I use these recipes I will be using products that still have the fat in them. But they're in lots of your favorite processed foods, so how bad could they be? -- If I had known that the author uttered the line above or relies on the use of artificial sweetners (Splenda and imitation honey), I never would've bought the book. The whole point of using a slow cooker is to use natural food and spices/herbs/condiments to create healthy, home-cooked meals. Not to take baby-steps away from processed foods. I think the author is misguided. Low carb does not mean "get rid of all the natural carbs and replace with artificial substitutes". It means lessen their amount in proportion to the other ingredients. If it wasn't for the over-reliance of Splenda and Guar/Xanthan, I would rate this book much higher, as the recipes sound very good. However, my experience suggests that cornstarch offers a small amount of carbs for an ingredient already conveniently stocked in most kitchens. Glibness suggest ignorance, and lowers my opinion of the author in spite of her best efforts elsewhere in the book. Summary: some excellent recipes. I'm going to rate this as a 5 star because, with one exception, everything I've made from this book has been excellent. The only exception was the walnuts and blue cheese snack recipe. The instructions say to stir halfway through the cooking time (on low) which is about 90 minutes into the cooking. By then, the bottom layer of nuts was already burned beyond recognition. The remainder were greasy and not really palatable. But the others were REAL WINNERS, so I can forgive one blunder. Summary: 200 low carb great book, think i will be trying several recipes. Listen to what she told her faithful followers in her latest newsletter to us: "By the way, after two years on the market, and 52 reviews, 15 Minute Low-Carb Recipes finally has a negative review at Amazon! The reviewer doesn't say the recipes aren't good, or the instructions aren't clear - just that the book doesn't have color photos in it (which is why the list price is under $20 - color is expensive!) Of all the recipes, I think I would maybe only try 3 and they are similar recipes to those I can get off the internet for FREE. In addition Several recipes have a sauce that goes with it and it never gives the sauce recipe on the same page. In fact it doesnt even tell you where to find the recipe.
