Summary: balanced or biased? How interesting that the reviewers comment on the presumed politics of the writer before looking at the quality of the text. More interesting still, that some see the text slanted to the right and others to the left. Well done, Lucas. I'd like to read what you have to say about using images (PowerPoint, Keynote) well. I'd also like to read some non-American speeches. These features would enhance its value to me. Summary: efficiency Got it he book is on time. the book is very educational and intresting. it aids you and you willlearn it lot. for those whohave fear of publice speaking, trust me after utilising all the tool { cds and materials etc.} you shall over come. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: casino operations Good overview of casino operations. It covers Indian gaming as well as Nevada and mentions where there are difference. I am the controller and I wish it had more accounting /finance. Summary: Excelent operations overview This book is a must read for everyone entering the casino business. It's a clear reference, and it shows derails some myths about gaming operations. Summary: Great read This books assumes you know nothing about Gaming Operations and goes from there, taking you on an in-depth exploration of the gaming industry, from it's beginnings through modern-day operations. This book was highly beneficial. I also read "The Gaming Industry: Introduction and Perspectives" from the UNLV International Gaming Institute, both of which I would strongly recommend. Well written and dives to the appropriate level of detail. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Sandford does it again Broken Prey; Not Sandford`s best, but a very good read. He just doesn`t write the Prey Series stuff fast enough. Summary: First Prey Book This is the first and only Prey book that I have read. It was an outstanding read and I will definately pick up others as I find them. If you like crime novels this one is GREAT. Summary: Wouldn't say it's XXX rated This was my first John Sanford book, and it definitely won't be my last. The book was to the point - Sanford gives us the information that we need and doesn't fill pages describing the scent of the air or how the leaves crack underfoot, which I like. The characters of this book were very likeable, and very personable. Not only that, they were believable. The book flowed nicely, and wrapped up excellently - we didn't get stuck reading 20 pages of narrative where the author attempts to tie up all the loose ends. I wouldn't call this book XXX rated at all, but perhaps I'm jaded from all the other crime/murder/mystery books I read. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Just what it advertises This book is just what it advertises - it is good down-to-earth and practical advice for those just starting out on their teaching careers. I've been teaching for several years but I found a good number of ideas in here to help orient our new faculty. I have just pulled every book in the library I could find on preparing faculty to instruct and this one was the best of the entire pile. I think it should be read by everyone just starting their teaching career. Summary: It's not easy being the new guy . . . It can be difficult making the transition from graduate student to college professor, and in nearly all colleges and universities -- unless you're one of the fortunate few to be adopted by a talented mentor -- you have to do most of it all by yourself, with only the occasional anecdotal assistance from other newbies. Even though all your more senior colleagues made the same journey from chrysalis to butterfly (or moth, in many cases), they quickly forget the tribulations of the process, and so there is little or nothing in the way of meaningful orientation offered at most schools. I had high hopes for this not-thick volume as a useful manual to assist the newly appointed instructor, and it indeed does the service of bringing a lot of material together in one place, but a reader who has been thinking and reading about the subject for a few years will find nothing original here. All the advice on teaching methods, advising students, why and how to get yourself published, why and how to pursue grant money, and the great and foggy subject of "faculty service" has been cribbed from other (presumably more original) authors. However, the thing I found particularly off-putting about this book is that all of it is couched in a self-conscious vocabulary and phrasing that almost serves as a model of academic-speak. And that's not a compliment! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Schools should all be learning organizations Senge became famous for his book on learning organizations. In this book, he and his co-authors apply those concepts and ideas specifically to educational institutions. While much of their focus is on K12, the ideas and process are applicable to higher education as well. So many management books are really fads with superficial value, but Senge's books are very practical and valuable. This book in particular demonstrates a great deal of passion on the part of the author's for their topic. Summary: Length appeared overwhelming--but well worth it Having been given the instructions to select a book of vision for a reading group in a graduate class, I didn't expect to choose one of over 500 pages. The length, however, is indicative of the power this book has for changing minds about schools and the way to structure them for learning. I found myself often reading passages aloud to other educators and anyone who would listen. Instead of stifling my curiosity, the book inspired me to dig deeper on the five disciplines. A great book for creating a vision of education that includes schools where students are learning. I may purchase another one to loan out! Summary: A great resource book for educators This is an essential book for anyone interested in education. Its comprehensive coverage gives much background, even at the risk of being distracting when you want to follow-up on the leads to so many interesting source-books and links. Though you are told to dip in anywhere, you must read the first section, esp. "The Industrial Age System of Education" by Senge and "A Primer to the Five Disciplines" (Personal Mastery, Mental Models, Shared Vision, Team Learning and Systems Thinking) (pp. 27-93). The authors consider this book a "prequel" to their other books about learning organizations (p.7). That's true. Though this is the most recent book, you can start with this one and go on to the others for further depth. Some repetitions may only serve well for mastery. The whole book is very readable and informative. Concepts are clearly explained. It follows the same excellent editing format as The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook and The Dance of Change. When you get too enthused by so many ideas and success stories of innovations, heed the advice for "The Strategy of Organizational Change". "Focus on one or two new priorities for change, not twelve. Most school systems are already overwhelmed with change. They don't need a new initiative; they need an approach that consolidates existing initiatives, eliminates "turf battles," and makes it easier for people to work together toward common ends." (p.25) There are just too many passages that you wish to quote. The book is a treasure mine. However, for those (esp. busy administrators) who find the volume too daunting or verbose (592 pages!) and still want to get a handle on launching into transforming their schools into learning organisations, I would recommend, "Ten Steps to a Learning Organization" and start with the simple questionnaire given there.
