Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Go With the Flow A nice overview of the workflow of Macro/Adobe's well-entrenched, tightly integrated website creation suite; This collection of tutorials is both a good introduction and a decent update to the current versions of Fireworks, Dreamweaver and Flash, without going too deeply into any of those programs (which would be way too much for one book). It's well written, better explained than some books I've read on the subject, with some errors (par for the course with Training From the Source), but nothing too debilitating. The first half of the book has you designing a site for an organic food provider, creating and optimizing images in Fireworks, incorporating those into Dreamweaver templates, creating page styles (a bit more complex than that would seem), linking pages together, adding interest and interaction in Flash, right up to the point of uploading to publish. With that under your belt, the second half gets more deeply into using Flash as a site creator, though still incorporating DW, delving more into database-driven sites with ColdFusion (not part of Studio 8 but downloadable from Macromedia in a developer's edition); incorporating onsite/offsite work groups with Contribute, and finally preparing the entire package for uploading to a domain. The book takes on the challenge of balancing both a comprehensive and basic real-world-type tour of Studio 8, and pulls it off nicely ..... though definitely allow time for breaks and review. I found the sections on HTML and ActionScript a bit frustrating, and when a teaching book contains errors it's hard to tell if you're the one doing something wrong; with the current software versions there is no way around some coding and tag orientation, and now that CSS has become such a necessity, we can't expect this toolset to become anything intuitive for some time. Fortunately, with the aforementioned integration, it's at least easier to get a concept of how it all works together, and it's good to see more tutorials appearing that address the workflow of this dedicated web suite and giving us a basic start in just one book. Again, one star off for proofing (sorry but when a book goes for $45 MSRP it needs to be perfect; MM Press needs beta testers), but better than most from this publisher. Summary: Good buy - worth the money Having only just recently purchased the Studio 8 suite and having no previous experience of this particular package, I found this book very good for getting to know the basics of Dreamweaver, Flash and Fireworks, it also covers a very basic knowledge of Contribute. The book is broken down into small step by step guides on how to complete many tasks and is easy to understand and time is also spent to explain why things are done the way they are. I felt this book was ideal for me as a beginner to the Studio 8 package and would recommend to anyone else in a similar situation, however now I know the capabilities of the package I realise I have needed to buy further books to expand my expertise however I do not need to buy the very basic books but those which are more targeted to my needs and an Intermediate level. Overall an excellent quick start guide to Studio 8 and well worth spending time and money on. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great for the money. This book takes you from web-site zero through building a basic client-side only web site using Dreamweaver 8. My only critique is that it seemed like we didn't even get to actually using Dreamweaver 8 until about page 100. Before that was an intro to general web-site concepts and HTML. Anyway, it's an attractive and informative book that is priced lower than most. Summary: Excellent Resource As someone who is new to Dreamweaver and web design, I have gone through several books. This book is an excellent resource that conveys not only the "hows" of Dreamweaver, but the "whys" of building well-designed web sites. I find myself referring to it again and again as Campbell's opinions on design topics are pretty much right on. True, you won't learn how to use every single feature of the program in this book. But there are many other books that you can teach you how to use Dreamweaver. This book is, in my opinion, more utilitarian and approachable than the other pure method books. Summary: Excellent beginner guide to web design using Dreamweaver 8 I have went through many Dreamweaver books and ended up more frustrated after reading them. They jump right into the details of all the features of the software and xhtml, css, etc. I end up trying to memorize all the features and trying to determine if I need them for what I'm trying to accomplish. This book starts from an idea->design->implementation->publish perspective. The author goes through the philosophy behind each step, then shows the features in Dreamweaver that will facilitate it. This book goes through the features of Dreamweaver that will facilitate the process flow. I need to know what I need to do and can then pick up another book for how to do it. There are details in the book that shows the steps to getting the important design process done. This book will save a lot of time for those that has an idea of what they want for their next web site but get bogged down on the technnical details of the software and other books. p.s. The section on layers is clearly written. You'll be creating css compliant layout using Dreamweaver in no time. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: A Good Channel through which to learn Flash interface and action script As the title states, this project-based approach to learning Flash 8 covers everything from becoming familiar with the interface to using both vector graphics versus pixilated images to the power of writing action script. For the beginning Flash 8 user, this book starts from scratch on how to draw objects. It begins by having the reader draw a simple box; by then end of the third chapter, what started as one object has become a movie, complete with alpha effects, motion effects, and even a first stab at action script. The remainder of the book builds off these core aspects of Flash. As a beginner, the book made it easy to follow through the step-by-step processes required to make Flash 8 work as desired. Not only does the book walk Flash users through the step-by-step processes, it also includes very useful sidebar notes and separate comment boxes (not to mention the wide sidebar space that just happen to be perfect for note-taking). These features are helpful in understanding how Flash `thinks' about the commands given in the projects. Also, the side notes will oftentimes refer the reader to the chapter in which a process is discussed in more detail to aid those more experienced users who have skipped around rather than reading the book cover-to-cover. Another handy feature of Flash 8: Projects for Learning Animation and Interactivity is the appendix titled "Tips and Resources," which lists some optional websites to extend Flash 8s possibilities; there is also a list of sites to practice with more tutorials. One potential downside of working through these projects comes with any book that uses the project-based approach: time. It takes time to work through the examples, even the ones that start out with some of the background work already done for you. However, this approach also gives a more thorough understanding of Flash 8 and should be beneficial to anyone who prefers a hands-on approach to learning the software. As such, it may be best suited for beginning users, but definitely has some information throughout that all semi-experienced Flash users should know. Summary: Good Content, Poor Layout 'Flash 8: Projects for Learning Animation and Interactivity' by Rich Shupe is a nice book content-wise but I really dislike the layout chosen for this book. When I think Flash, I think dynamic, hot, exciting... FLASHY!!! Well, for this book, the best words that comes to mind are grey, grey, and more GREY. YAWN... BOOOORING!!!! The only bit of color that touches this book resides on the front cover folks... that's it. I would expect this from an old-style O'Reilly book but not from a book in the O'Reilly family where cousin books are loaded with color. This might not seem like a big deal, but for this type of book, the choice to use a pure black and white layout is a very poor choice. Anything in Flash that isn't a video will be some kind of animation that is made, and the application is known for slick vector graphics and a wondrous interface. None of that stands out here and it makes the book very lackluster when reading it. On the positive side of things, the projects outlined here are solid and the content is decent but I have trouble really recommending this book. If you are a dedicated Flash worker who does this for a living I would recommend taking a look at all Flash books on the market, but if you just looking to learn or pick up some more tips and tricks, I would look at other books first. Summary: Combines good design techniques with learning Flash 8 This book is a unique one on Flash 8 because it tears down the wall between artistic design books and technical manuals and succeeds at being both. It starts out simple by showing you how to draw elementary figures. It then moves on to customizing your properties and automating your workflow so that you can design quickly. Next, animation is presented along with all of the techniques you will need to be efficient plus how to perform various effects. This book is particularly good at showing the reader how to import sound, graphics, and video, and how to use scripting via AppleScript to control it all. The lessons are done via unique and creative projects. By the end of the book you won't be an expert on Flash, design techniques, or AppleScript, but you will be pretty good at putting the 3 together to perform interesting tasks in Flash and doing so efficiently. A good companion book to this one is "Flash 8: The Missing Manual". It explains all of the technical nuts and bolts of Flash that there is not room to accommodate in this book. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Intro to Intermediate - Great Book This books covers it. Whatever you are looking for, all of the applications are discussed in detail, their similarities and differences. The Projects are very useful and cover the full range of software. The only negetive is the fact that you have to download all of the data files. There is no included CD. But that said, this book starts at the basics of all of the applications and moves though their functionality. Then moves to the projects that are carried through from beginning to end. The language used is not Techie, but lighthearted for lack of a better phrase. Easy to read and very informative. Well setup, very easy to use as a reference. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Good for starting out This book has excellent tutorials, but hardcore programmers looking for more of a reference type book are best off skipping right to Paul Catanese's "Director's Third Dimension". Summary: Good introductory book on Director 3d This is a good introductory and intermediate book on Director 3D. But I find it disappointing that no discussion on collision detection is given, although it has example movies on terrain following. So, 4 stars. Summary: A Must Have Book I write reviews of graphic software and, on occasion, books. Before deciding to review this book, I looked at two or three others that were available at my local book stores on Macromedia 8.5. This was the only one that impressed me. In many ways, this book by Phil and Mike Gross pick up where Phil Gross's Director 8 and Lingo Authorized left off. This book is a training course which will guide the reader into the major areas of 3D programming. While this might sound daunting, it isn't because the lessons are step by step guides. The authors state in their introduction that the first four chapters are intended for 3D designers who want to bring their 3D creations to the web while the remainder of the chapters are for seasoned Director users who want to take advantage of the 3D features of Director 8.5. Even if I did not intend to use the properties of Director 8.5's 3D module extensively, these first lessons would get me started in an orderly and logical fashion because they highlight the basic information necessary to build upon should I desire to go further while giving me clear instruction on how to use basic 3D in a Director movie. Many small points are added that help tremendously in learning and manipulating the program. I like the way the authors have designated "additional" information as Tips and Notes. This book does not teach a basic course in Director. That is not its intent. For that, the earlier book by Phil Gross, referred to above, is an excellent source of knowledge. This book is very clearly written and logically moves the reader forward step by step. Whether the reader is advanced in the 3D world or a novice, this book describes using 3D tools in Director 8.5. The book shows how one can get heavily involved in the Lingo language and create complex 3D animations or just use basic techniques and create simpler ones. This is a must have if you are using Macromedia Director 8.5. Shockwave Studio. Paula Sanders ... Summary: |
