Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: best advice i've had in along time having already read this book , I found it was filled with wisdom from the introduction to the very end , being on the water a lot for a living myself this book pointed out some of the more obvious rules of thumb that apply too mariners. And some very good ones i'd never heard of , but as it states in the book " good advice is so very hard to come by when it comes to rules of the ocean , and the black box theory is some thing i will do my utmost to adhere to as it is all very true done with the witty sence of humor that would appeal to more than most fisherman allthe way to seasoned sailors its a very handy book , A must for all serious Boaties ! Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Very Good Manual Except for having to jump around to find things, I was able to rebuild my Johnson 110 hp motor with it and it runs great. This is the first time I ever tried to do this and without the manual, I would have been lost. There were a few things that I had to figure out myself, but all in all this manual helped a great deal. I would recomment it to those wishing to try it as I did. Summary: erinrude/johnson outboard shop manual 48-235 hp, 1973 1990 Typical of Clymer outboard manuals-I have found this manual very useful. I'm not that mechanical and I appreciate the manual's attention to detail and for the numerous pictures and diagrams. Summary: My opinion I feel the book was written ok...just OK. I feel the biggest problem is that its too broad. Just when you are finally figuring out what your reading... its about the wrong engine size or year. I will have to admit that its probably as good as its going to get for a repair manual not bought from the dealer. Bottom line good for info, just not for a rebuild Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Top Flight Calder The book gives you the tech you need, in terms you can understand. Calder is very impressive in his ability to impart knowledge to the layman. Don't however, assume this is just fluff overview, because it truly is the down and dirty of how it works and how to maintain it. Summary: A Cruiser's Engine Atlas This book provides the reader with a broad overview of most of the basic problems that can occur and offers simple solutions. I have recommended/loaned my copy of this book to several Diesel sailboat owners. The all remarked on how simple their repair was according to the book and how it save them $$. I do find the book is a little lacking in coverage of large powerboat diesels, but the concepts seem applicable. Summary: Know Your Diesel My copies of this book has grease stained fingerprints throughout. A lot of folks have told me they think this book is redundant, because much of the info is covered in Mr. Calder's Mechanical & Electrical Manual but this smaller book is easier to work with when working around your engine and the material is presented differently enough that the book is one I believe you should have if you live on a boat. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Givem Hell Harry This man comes up with so many unique ways to do thing the best way possible. I went out and bought some other books he wrote that are out of date now just because he write them so well. Could I write this well I would have at least a pulitzer or maybe an Oscar. PS I owned several copies of his books that were burned up in a house fire. I just had to have them to read over and over. They stay out on the coffee table. I have yet to see anyone not finish the chapter they are on before they can put the book down to do other things. I have been late more than once. drayegon Summary: Very good book for plywood boat building I found this book to be very helpful. It makes boat building accesible to almost anyone. But I wish there were more photos, especially of finished boats. I decided to build the Nymph, the 7' 9" pram design featured in this book. Then I decided I wanted a beamier (wider) boat so I built the wider version of the Nymph, called the Rubens Nymph (Please note: The Rubens Nymph is not featured in this book, only the Nymph is). I did not buy plans, but just widened the bottom and transoms of the Nymph, and used thicker plywood for the frames. So boats can be built from this book without plans, but if I did it again I would get the plans...especially for any of the larger boats. photos of my finished Rubens Nymph can be seen at: http://pagesofmystery.com/RubensNymphatBlueResevoir.htm Summary: Essential boatbuilding This is the best book ever written on making small boats for rowing or sailing using modern techniques. If you always figured you would like to build a boat, but were worried about making a success of it, this book, or the others in his series will ensure you get the job done. Here are three reservations, just so you know: 1) The building method know as tack and tape is original to the Bolger/Payson duo, and isn't state of the art. Payson prefers working with fiberglass resin rather than epoxy, and those with an E allergy might agree. But for others, this may send you off in the wrong direction. Nonetheless the boats are great as designed, even if they could be better. For instance in epoxy it would be possible to drop the frames and add solid transoms to better carry motors or rudders. That's a better trade. 2) The designs are a little funky, which is good open thinking throughout, but for instance a person who bought one of these books because they noticed there was a sailboard would probably not be that satisfied, on the other hand it's a great plan to try out a little boarding on. 3)If you just wanted to build one of these boats, many of which are great like Diablo or Nymph, why not just buy the relevant plan? Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The definitive guide Peggie has produced an outstanding guide for tracking down and eliminating funky smells on board. The book is full of factual information and how to's. The humor is appropriate and quite funny without falling into the obvious traps. Highly recommended Summary: Excellent Book. This book provided just the information I was looking for in a "to the point" style. If you have an older boat with an odor problem, this book will help you diagnose and eliminate the problem. Well worth the money and I'd recommend it to anyone. True to it's title, this book is about getting rid of boat odors....I'm not sure why the person who wrote the negative review thought it was an installation manual. Summary: OK book The book is OK, but doesn't go into a great detail. I guess I was expecting more "drill down" information. Still VERY good information for all boaters! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: if I can read My Englisjh is terrible, so if I can read this book (and I do), this is a good and simple book. Thank you Summary: The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers, and Owners Its a good book but I can imagine some difficulties to people not affine with this subject. I have no problem as a Naval Architect. Summary: Putting Your Time Where It Counts As a person developing a design, I want to put my time into developing hull form, keel, etc., not into hours and hours of calculations about structure which for the moment serve no other purpose than the creation of a plausible weight estimate to be used in Velocity Prediction. Using Dave Gerr's scantling system, I can produce a good weight estimate, and even a good preliminary construction plan, relatively quickly, and put the rest of my time where it counts the most -- developing the hull form and keel, etc. As this is the only boat that I have the opportunity to design right now, and it is being done on speculation, there isn't that much time to begin with, and these savings really help. This is especially true in this case because, using Dave Gerr's scantlings, I am not only saving time but also setting the foundation for a good construction plan as well. The book itself focuses on good strong construction, but -- at least for the aluminum construction that I am focusing on -- also considers some options for lightening that structure considerably if that is the desired trade off. My thanks to Dave Gerr for putting together something that has been needed for a long time. David J. Fladlien Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Clear as water I bought this book to help me rebuilt the electrical wiring of my sailboat and it is very helpful! All explanations are short and clear. The numerous sketches make it easy to understand and visualize what i need to do. However, i found that some information on the batteries are not up to date. And i think that it would be nice to have information about 'new' technologies and 'new' products such as combiners, isolators, LED lights, etc. All in all this book is (to me) an excellent reference for anyone who owns a boat and wants to learn the fundamentals of marine electricity. Summary: An execelent guide for understanding of eletrics on a sailboat. This is a good example of a book that was carefully written to be understood by a large spectrum of amateur sailors. I found particularly useful the chapter about the choice of types of batteries. Summary: Absolutely Outstanding I started with almost zero knowledge and some fear of all things electrical and a marine starting battery that would discharge overnight. I'd had the battery tested and found good leaving the problem somewhere in the boat's wiring. I got everything I needed to have to fix this problem from this book. Casey's book had the foundation knowledge I needed to understand the troubleshooting steps and a specific troubleshooting process that enabled me to find and fix the source of the problem. That alone was a huge benefit and probably saved me a couple of hundred dollars. More importantly, reading the book to solve my specific problem gave me the foundation to approach any electrical problem on the boat. I'm generally pretty handy and now can view electrical troubleshooting as just another thing that I have the confidence to do. Very, very well written. Good mix between simplicity and specificity. I highly recommend this book and a good multimeter. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very helpful. Buddy and I just purchased a 1989 Hydrasport and the wiring is a mess. This book has been very helpful for someone like me who doesn't know the first thing about wiring or electrical systems. It works its way from the basics of electrical current and circuits up to specific instructions for installing lights, pumps, etc. Money well spent. Summary: Sherman certainly doesn't tank with this tome. In fact, he more resembles King Henry at the Battle of Agincourt with this winning effort. I dabble in Marine Electrics but find myself ineffective applying the principles of instruction. While I understand why a customers boat needs a working galvanic isolator, or why I want to rip out from their boat the residen- tial type solid copper conductor Romex cabling when I see it, putting that into phraseology understandable by someone trained in another specialty is usually a problem. With this book I can either explain in words or hand them the pagemarked book itself. I usually do the latter and keep on working. I appreciate the depth into which the author explains shorepower systems, especially how he echoes my distaste for ferro-res chargers and my preference for 3 and 4 step smart chargers and multistage inverter chargers. Anyone who owns a hole in the water you pour money into that has at least one engine, battery and decked over bow should have one copy of the 12 volt bible on board and another back at the house. Summary: Sherman's assault on electrical mysteries! Whether you're a new to electrical systems or a professional serviceman, there is valuable material here for you. The book starts with the basics of electrical circuits, wiring diagrams and test equipment. The liberal use of drawings and photographs clearly illustrates the theories set forth. The recommended test equipment is used and demonstrated consistently throughout the book. So, any user purchasing or owning similar devices will have a clear idea how to apply them when troubleshooting and maintaining an electrical system. The explanation of wiring diagrams, symbology and use in maintenance applications is very easy to follow. For the professional serviceman, the references to ABYC standards and practices is very informative. The chapter covering circuit protection and repair procedures gives significant insight as to what is or is not a good electrical connection! There are two chapters devoted to batteries and battery charging systems. This included the use of isolators, combiners, wiring schemes, hydrometer testing, load testing, alternator and shore power charging systems. Explanations are thorough enough to explain the workings of these systems for basic troubleshooting or selection of equipment for upgrades to systems. AC and DC devices aboard the boat are each covered in their own chapters. Installation considerations as well as troubleshooting are explained. Safety with AC systems is discussed at length. Again there are frequent references to the ABYC standards throughout. Finally the book wraps up with the chapter on electronic installations. Issues such as RFI, magnetic field interference, power, and basic physical considerations are included. For the boat owner interested in doing it themselves, or those that want a little more knowledge when dealing with servicemen, this book provides a solid base of theory and practical knowledge for both. All installation and maintenance explanations are given in the context of the ABYC standards. Therefore I highly recommend it as a book to have on the shelf for professionals as well.
