Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Still Waiting After 4 decades of reading and studying Faulkner, I believe Parini's book gets us closer to taking the measure of the man; but I wonder if even Parini realises what a true genius Faulkner was. I want some scholar to say finally that he's not only America's greatest writer (of all time), but the finest writer in English that the 20th century produced. The literary criticism here is a bit hit and miss, but mostly hits. The current literary fads and obsessions at times tend to dilute the focus on Faulkner's achievement, but this could have been a lot worse. In general, Faulkner scholarship has yet to rise to the level of quality of Faulkner himself. The one notable exception is Cleanth Brooks' WILLIAM FAULKNER: THE YOKNAPATAWPHA COUNTRY, which after over 40 years is still the most distinguished, best written, most level-headed, and downright brilliant exploration of the Yoknapatawpha novels. Summary: One Matchless Time is time spent with Southern genius Wm. Faulkner William Faulkner was a genius! The 1949 winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature was a complex man, He was "a mystery wrapped in an enigma. Faulkner was a great artist but a troubled human being. He was an alcoholic, womanizer (several affairs followed his marriage to the troubled Estelle Oldham), lier (such as his wild tales of his spurious adventures as a flier in the World War I RAF!), poor husband, prodigal son of the rich soil of his Mississippi birthplace. Faulkner was more! He was the creator of Yoknapatawhpa county bringing to the realm of world literature such characters as Flemn Snopes, the Bundren and Compson families, Temple Drake, Joe Christmas and so many more. Along with Balzac and Dickens he was the creator of a whole world of fictional life in what he called his "postage stamp sized landscape." Joseph Blotner has written the best book on FAulkner but I would use this fine work by Parini if I was teaching an English class on the great "Dixie Epress" from Oxford. Though an academic, Jay Parini does a good job in summarizing the complex novels; relating the life of FAulkner and putting this material down in an easy to read style free of pyschobabble. I enjoyed this fine book especially the details on Faulkner's complicated family history in Mississippi which was dominated by the memory of his great-grandfather Colonel Falkner. If you need to know a lot about Faulkner in a short space of time turn to Parini. Well done! Summary: One matchless eternity This briskly paced biography of Faulkner summons the image of the man very well, and brings some resonance to the extraordinary period from 1928 to the nineteen forties when the inspiration to create a mysterious world in a series of masterworks overtook this shambling southerner breaking out of the initial conditions of his birth. The gestation of the first novels then sudden appearance of Sound and the Fury is one of the great literary tales of the twentieth century, and the extant vision is of the Golgotha of a lost and passing world, no sentimentality needed for this tragic view, of the peculiar and flawed society of the South after the Civil War and Reconstruction. Faulkner's work echoes this ominous mood in his matchless evocation and cathartic cutting to the core of the unconscious of that world and summons, next to Moby Dick, the tragic genre to the telling of the tale of the American Dream. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: We need this education Humans are originally pure in spirit, pure God, but by living in the world we are contaminated with materialism. Materialistic persons have burdened themselves for temporary happiness. The aim of this book and the work of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness is to awaken mankind to its original, God-like condition and to inform everyone that the duty of a human is to understand his relationship to God. The purpose of the Vedic scriptures is to develop love of God; they tell of a 5-year old prince who went to the forest to seek God, ate fruit and vegetables every third day, drank a little water every sixth day, restricted his breathing, and stood on one leg for six months. It is not necessary for us to practice such austerities, although Krishna Consciousness is based on self control such as giving up illicit sex, drinking too much, eating meat, and gambling. If one wants to advance in spiritual understanding he must accept a life of restriction. Anyone can adopt the process of Krishna Consciousness and perfect his life. All religious scriptures describe lower planetary systems or hell and higher systems or heaven. A living entity can prepare itself for heaven or hell by the appropriate preparation; as you sow, so shall you reap is the law that governs. Sinful activities can be by thought, word or deed and one has to suffer punishment. People do not believe in the next life because they want to avoid punishment, but one cannot avoid the next life nor save oneself from the laws of nature. We may deny the existence of God and His laws but God and His laws are still there. According to the law of karma if we act properly we are rewarded and if we act sinfully we suffer. Wherever we reach in this life is the starting point in the next life. According to the Vedic way of life, if a person commits a sin and counteracts it by penance, that is atonement; one has to execute the prescribed atonement according to the gravity of the sinful activity. Sinful activities are like diseases and one should follow the prescribed cures to become healthy. The message of this book is summed up in the paragraph: "Modern civilization is in dire need of an educational system to give people instructions on what happens after death. In actuality the present educational system is most defective because unless one knows what happens after death, one dies like an animal. An animal does not know that he is subject to death or that he is going to have another body. Human life, however, should be more elevated. One should not simply be interested in the animalistic functions of eating, sleeping, defending and mating. A living entity may have abundant supply of food for eating, or many nice buildings for sleeping, or good arrangements for sex life, or a good defense to protect him, but this does not mean that he is a human being. A civilization that is based on these activities should be known as animalistic. Since animals are also interested in these functions, what is the difference between human life and animal life if a human being does not go beyond them? The distinction can be made when the human being becomes inquisitive and asks 'Why have I been put into this miserable condition? Is there any remedy for it? Is there perpetual eternal life? I do not want to suffer. I want to live happily and peacefully. Is there any chance for this? What is the method or science by which this can be achieved?' When these questions are asked, and steps have been taken to answer them, our human civilization is the result." The answers to these questions are to be found in this book. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Is it wrong to give my own book 5 stars? This is my book, that is to say I wrote it. It's the first novel I've written and it has certain flaws that are in any beginner's novel. I hope you will allow for them. There is no synopsis on this page so here is what I'll tell you about this book: It's about two boys, Calvin Fletcher and Rick Hogan, two middle schoolers who are neighbors and once were best friends, but now they are not as close as they were once. Each of them has problems with the girls they like. These are typical middle school variety relationship problems, but I thought the subject had always been treated humorously and I wanted to look at the subject seriously, from the minds of those very twelve- and thirteen-year-olds. Because to them, it's the most important thing in the world and there is nothing comical to them about having their hearts broken. In the end, it's really just a novel about certain special friendships and I hope I got that across the way I wanted to. I hope you will buy it and enjoy it and tell your friends to buy it. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Colorado History at its best Jane Candia Coleman has done a superb job of telling the story of Colorado's most famous love triangle throught the eyes of Augusta Tabor, the jilted wife of H.A.W. Tabor and his love interest, the infamous Baby Doe. Jane knows her stuff, and has incorporated as much truth as research allows into this fascinating tale of the pioneer days in Leadville and Denver. Well done, and an interesting and entertaining historical read. Summary: Moving story of the pioneer woman's strength This novel was exquisite and laden with emotion. The characters were so well-developed and so real! i found myself laughing, crying and furious right along with the characters. I picked it up and couldn't put it down! Any avid reader of Western fiction needs to read this book. Summary: Fascinating and haunting I would not normally pick up a Western novel, so I wasn't expecting to really enjoy this book. Boy was I wrong! This book tells an absolutely fascinating story about a pioneer woman and her husband who participate in the gold and silver rush. They travel from Maine, through Kansas, and end up in Colorado. The character development is top notch, although I did feel that the author displayed quite a bit of bias toward the heroine, and an equal bias against her husband...but that is worth overlooking in the greater scheme of the book. I think the husband would have told the story differently, but then again this book is from the perspective of the wife! I didn't realize the book was based on true events and real people until I finished it, and now I am haunted by their story and their lives. It is inspiring, because of the heroine's independence and hard working attitude, and thought-provoking, because of the personal costs to the main characters. Even though the events took place well over 100 years ago I thought the characters still have a lot of relevance to life today. Summary: |
