Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Good book for neww Miata owner This gives the new owners of Madza Miata's some very good ideas on upgrading this fine car. This book is very helpful in completeing projects. Summary: Great for all levels of Miata Enthusiasts Keith Tanner knows the Miata and he is great at passing along his experience and knowledge. I'm no mechanic extraordinaire but I have always wanted to have a fun car to work on so I bought a 1990 Miata. Since purchasing the car I have been through several of the projects listed in his book. Each time it was Keith's guidance and experience that made me feel comfortable with what I was doing. It is really nice to have re-assurance when you are drilling holes in your car and or bashing parts of it with a hammer. The older cars like mine don't always give up easily like the newer ones. Thanks to Keith my car has achieved a level beyond stock that I'm very happy with. The overall cost/effort involved was quite reasonable and that was important. Keith does a good job letting you understand the cost (money, effort, etc..) versus reward (power, responsiveness, etc..). This lets you pick the projects that help you change your car into something that better suits you within limits that suit you. I strongly recommend this book to any Miata owner with an interest in maintaining/modifying his own car. With this book in hand it is very unlikely my near 14 year old car will ever be back in the dealer shop again. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A great repair manual for '94-'97 Miatas This book covers maintenance and major and minor repairs to 1.8L Miatas up to the 1998 redesign. In the US, this means model years 1994 thru 1997. If you have a 1990 - 1993 Miata, buy the 1.6L book by the same author. If you have a 1999 or later Miata, then neither book will be useful. This book is well written, with lots of photos and diagrams. I have found the instructions very useful and well thought-out. This book has allowed me to do repairs on my Miata that I would have never tried alone. For example, I was able to completely remove my dash from the car, including the steering wheel and airbags, so that I could replace the carpet. The instructions included in this book are more complete and detailed than in the Haynes book. FYI, [...] also has good instructions for many common repairs and upgrades. Thanks to Rod for writing such an excellent book! Summary: A Miata owner from Barbados says.... A well written, clear and concise book with plenty of pictures to help you do what you want to do to the car. It covers everything from all of the standard distance / time maintenance jobs that should be done, through to the more complicated in a language that makes it easy for the novice and the expert. I bought this book over a year ago and still use it every time I go to do something to the car! If you want to do jobs your self, and need a bit of help, get this book! Summary: Forget Haynes... This is the best car maintenance/shop book I've ever seen. Probably the best feature is that Rod tells you how to do things with simple tools, or even how to come up with makeshift tools, including how to improvise a homemade torque wrench for tight spaces, etc. This is a true "shadetree mechanic" type book. Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: By itself - useless This pehaps could be useful in addition to other manuals and/or a hands-on course, but but itself it's close to useless (though it depends on what exactly you're endeavoring to do: some procedures are better covered than others.) In general, there's endless cross-referencing (so that a simple-looking procedure in one place will refer you to five other procedures and so on, so you won't be able not only to do anything, but simply understand.) Pictures are not helpful, crude, frequently not very illustrative. The good parts are the introductory ones -- the necessary tools, etc. Again, if that's the only book you have and you're not a mechanic you won't be able to do anything based on this book. A better option would be to get the official Mazda manuals (a 2-book set) from an authorized dealer and, better yet, take a auto-maintenance course. Most of this stuff is really simple but hands-on; if you watch someone actually do something and then try to match the procedure with the description in the book you'll see what I mean. Well, I've said most of this stuff is simple -- that's not quite right; many procedures are anything but simple and require a shop setup to perform correctly, so I'm not sure what the premise of this kind of books is to begin with: after all, the complex tasks you won't be doing yourself anyway (so why have them there), while the simple stuff that is within the reach is either badly demonstrated or altogether missing. A good example: say you need to replace a windshield washer hose. It is a very simple operation that anyone could do, but there's no word on it in the book. But there is all kinds of stuff about the engine, most of which a regular Joe couldn't do even if he knew how to. This book is practically useless, I think; definitely check it out in a store before buying to make sure that the procedure that you need is present and covered in an understandable way. Summary: Looks ok but dosn't really help When you page through this book you notice all the great diagrams. It's not until use it that you realize none of the blow up diagrams have any parts labeled. The book has a lot of great procedures but most are not thorough enough and there is no general troubleshooting section to steer you in the right direction (other chiltons have this). For example, my Mazda lunged and quit working. I troubleshot a lot of systems before finding a weak spark. Then the only explanation for a weak spark in the book was the coil. I validated the coil did not meet their validation criteria and replaced it. But it did not work so I took it to the dealer. The dealer determined it was the distributor. The book had no validation or installation procedures for the distributor. Summary: Chilton's Mazda Repair Manual No. 46802 It is indeed a tough job to describe so many different models of Mazda vehicles in one book. While a lot of information is covered, I feel that too much space has been devoted to teaching the basics of how to do generic tasks. Not having seen any other Chilton's manuals, I don't know if this basic training appears in all manuals, but I beleive that the basics should be left out so that much more detail can be included about the specifics of the Mazda vehicles covered by the manual. The information included in Chapter 1 for example, should be in a General Mechanics book. Apart from that, I have found the manual helpful. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Some important details lacking I've been using these Haynes books for years, and this is the worse one I have found yet. The things that are good about it (described in the other reviews) are good only because there's nothing better out there. This book has two main problems: first, the photographs reveal too little, and have too little definition. They also were taken with components removed--but the problem is that removing those components is usually not described in that particular section. In fact, it doesn't even tell you that it should be removed. Example: in order to get to the thermostat, you have to remove the distributor. But it doesn't tell you that. Also, in order to get to the fuel filter, you have to remove SOMETHING. But it doesn't tell you what. Second, steps are skipped in the descriptions--important ones. Not only are they skipped, but they are inadequately described. Example: In order to realign the distrubutor (which, by the way, you have to do if you take it off [which, by the way, you have to do if you want to replace the thermostat]) you have to get the number one piston at top dead center (TDC). The book tells you to align the notch on the crankshatp alligns with the T mark on the timeing plate. What timing plate? Where? The picture helps nothing, it doesn't show what angle it's taken from--it's completely random. So, I'd try to buy it used. They just have gotten lazy with these things over the years. They need to remember: on foreign cars, you can't skip steps, because everything is buried, everything is in the way. I'll withdraw this review when someone at Haynes emails me to help me out with my distribultor problem: [...] Summary: Comprehensive info for car years 1990 to 2000 Complete tear down and rebuild. These manuals are excellent. I wanted to make sure there was a note that this is for the years MAZDA 323 & Protoge 1990 to 2000 inclusive. If you have the new style protoge, don't get it!! Summary: Mazda 323 & Protege : Automotive Repair Manual (Haynes Auto It is a really handy manual by which you can find lots of information from maintain routine to specific repair guildlines.
