Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: THE ONE SQL SERVER BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE I picked up Stanek's SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant and Windows Server 2003 Inside Out at the same time, and have found them both to be excellent. If there's one SQL Server book every developer, programmer and administrator should have, it's this one--I haven't found a better one and I've read half a dozen so far. Stanek has a gift for getting to the point, explaining the most complex concepts in ways that are easy to understand. He seems to pack a 1,000 pages of info into 550 pages. SQL Server 2005 Administrator's Pocket Consultant has a strong focus on security, configuration, optimization, and troubleshooting. Throughout the book, there's excellent coverage of T-SQL and I prefer the way T-SQL is covered in context in this book to the way it's covered in the separate T-SQL book I bought (and no longer use). Beyond core database administration, which this book covers better than any other book, it also covers full-text search, indexes, integration services (creating packages), linked servers, distributed transactions, replication, publications, etc. The maintenance chapters are some of the strongest with complete coverage of profiling, monitoring, optimizing, backup, recovery, log shipping, database mirroring, automation, etc. Thank you Mr. Stanek for an excellent book. Summary: THE definite SQL Server 2005 admin ref Ever since I picked up Stanek's Windows 2000 admin pocket consultant, I've relied on his books and they've never let me down. When I needed to learn about SQL Server 2005, I checked to see if there was a pocket consultant and I'm thankful there was. This book has been a constant resource in getting up and running with sql server. As usuall Stanek packs in more detail than other books twice as big, making this a powerful and to the point resource. All 549 pages are top notch! Summary: Which version is it? I'd feel more comfortable about buying this book if the sample pages actually referred to SQL Server 2005 instead of SQL Server 2000. Some of the reviews are dated 2004. So which product does this book cover? Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Great SQL Server 2005 Reference The Administrator's Guide to SQL Server 2005 is a great reference for DBAs and System Administrators planning to implement and maintain SQL Server 2005. While the book is written for Administrators, database developers will benefit from it as well. For example, one of my day to day activities includes testing various SQL Server configurations before they are implemented into production environments that require near 100% uptime. The chapter covering high-availability provided thorough step by step instructions on how to set up database mirroring and replication. I was especially delighted to find instructions on how to create a production-like test environment using virtual machine technology at the end of the chapter. Each chapter is well written and loaded with good practical advice. I highly recommend this book! Summary: Great Resource For the DBA I bought Buck's other book because I was new to being a DBA, and needed a quick guide. I looked at this one and bought it as well. It has all the features in SQL 2005 that I needed to know, without focusing on programming. I really liked the chapter on the Service Broker, because I heard a few people trying to explain it that just confused me. This one did a great job of laying it out in plain English. He didn't do as well a job on Reporting Services, but he does cover the basics and even shows you how to create a report. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Concise reference manual This good and concise sqlserver administration reference manual has a complete online version on microsoft.com/technet. Summary: Best for administration I haven't found a better book for sql admins. This book is extremely informative. I worked for a year with SQL 7 and have been studying and working with SQL Server 2000 for a year and a half. I passed Exam 70-228 in large part due to what I learned from this book. If you are looking for a how-to book that shows just exactly how to accomplish tasks associated with creating and maintaining SQL 2000 this book is for you. This is an excellent book if you want to understand how SQL Server 2000 works as well. Summary: Great Book A lot of SQL Server books give you the same information included already in Books Online. SQL Server 2000 Administrator's Pocket Consultant is an excellent complement for Books Online, TechNet and MSDN. It covers similar topics, but it digs in where necessary, provides best practices, tips to the internal operations, explaining how SQL Server actually works, with unique information only available in this book. I always want to know how things work because it helps me to understand the behaviour of a system. In many cases if you don't know how things work it could drive you to some misunderstandings. Here is where SQL Server Pocket Consultant helps out and Stanek has excellent teaching skills. The book is very compact and full of information. It's all in the details. Chapter 2 "Configuring and Tuning" is a real gem. It helped so much with server and database tuning. Chapter 5 "SQL Server Security" is excellent on the security details. Chapter 7 provides deep detail of DTS and BCP. The final part of the book is the best, in my opinion. It covers performance, maintenance and optimization. The book's small size makes it easy to take with you where ever you go and its good enough that you'll want to. Overall excellent guide ot sql server. Summary: |

Summary: Good book It is the best book I have read for the following areas: Clusters The problem with this book is that is a little boring. Summary: Look else where, like BOL This has to be one of the worst books I own. Time and time again I look to it to provide some knowlege in hopes that the purchase may redeem itself. I am always vastly disappointed! If you want general SQL Server information, the Books Online that come with SQL Server provide MUCH more information. There are also many more worthwhile books out there. Keep looking! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: 30 out of 34 reveiwers can't be wrong 30 out of 34 reveiwers can't be wrong Summary: Excellent coverage of MS SQL I read this book right after it came out. This book was instrumental in getting my MCDBA certification. I found the reading much easier than the Books On-Line (BOL). In my opinion that is why you purchase technical books, to get a clearer understanding of what the documentation that comes with the product is trying to say. This is not to say I think the BOL are bad, this book just does a better job of explaining some of the topics. To give this book a poor review because you can learn MS-SQL 7.0 from the Books On-Line is absurd, the BOL contain everything you need to know, same as the Oracle documentation does for an Oracle RDMS, reading either can be a bit much though. Steven A. Frare MCSE, MCSD, MCDBA Summary: Need a print out of the BOL (Books Online)? Buy this book. This book is nothing more than a collection of articles straight out of the BOL and screen pictures. If you're looking for a book with at least a modicum of substance, keep looking. Not only is the technical info nothing to write home about, Talmage can't write - the writing is absolutely dreadful. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: This book was designed for desktop administrators This book provides a comprehensive, no-nonsense review of Windows XP administration from the desktop administrator's point of view. You will not find lots of funny jokes or humorous antidotes, but if you are looking for a serious administrator's guide, this book will serve you well. Highly recommended! Summary: Excellent Resource for Administrators Overall, I would say that this is an excellent resource for those wishing to enter into the world of system administration. Ford really goes in depth explaining the processes involved in administering Windows XP. I would recommend this book whether you are pursuing a Microsoft certification or not. One caveat however, do not buy this book if you want to be humorously entertained because this book gets right to the subject and includes step by step tasks, minus the stupid jokes. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very helpful This is a very helpful book. Concisely put together, I find it's my only reference I use to learn how to use our SQL server installation. The book gets me started in the right direction, then I'm able to figure things out on my own. Summary: Excellent coverage of all the basics I was home sick and read this book through from cover to cover. This book covers all the basics. I would want to have a total coverage book around as well for reference, but for getting all the basic questions answered, this book does the job. It's hard to find answers to general questions in the heavier reference books due to their total coverage. This book gets to the point and tells you how to accomplish specific and important tasks. It's also light and small (relatively), so if you're a consultant you can easily carry it along with you. It's very clearly written. Summary: Handy in a Pinch This book is compact (although pocket means coat pocket in this case) and well-indexed, so it's very handy to have with you if you in a pinch. Unfortunately, much of the book is devoted to explaining where things are in the UI (this button does this, that button does that). There are a few good how-does-this-work sections and lots of tip/best practice/real world insets, but in the final analysis they are only occasionally more helpful to me than the Books Online. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, there is precious little here about the gotchas inherent in certain operations--good SQL and GUI examples of how to accomplish a task, but not much to help you if something goes wrong. In short, if you're asking yourself how much depth there could be in a book whose title advertises that it will fit in your pocket, you should probably buy something else. But there are a lot of topics covered here, and the newer you are to SQL Server 7, the more use this book will be to you. Summary: |
