Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: What you need to know right now to fix the problem The words 'Pocket Consultant' in the title are interesting. I don't have a pocket anywhere near big enought to hold this 600 page book. On the otherhand, you don't need the wheeled dolly to cart abound the whole library you needed when you were first learning how to be an administrator. What this book is for is as a refresher when you need some command or switch or flag that you don't use very often and you can't remember what it is. And for that it's ideal. The stated intent of the author is to provide a book that has what you need to do the administrative task at hand without a lot of extra stuff. This is the second edition of the book. It has been updated to cover Service Pack 1 and Release 2. These releases had significant amounts of code in them and made numerous changes in how everything worked. If you have the first edition, you know how much you use it and it's time to upgrade your book just as you did your operating system. Summary: Excellent value Good depth - covers multiple subjects and has plenty of expert advice. Does an excellent job of covering the most important aspects of Windows administration. I was surprised by how much information is packed into ~600 pages. Concise and portable just like it says. It's the one windows book I use the most. Summary: Win Svr Adm Guide - mrp I bought the book as a reference book and it has been able to provide me with easy to find and accurate answers each time I had to refer to it Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent! I spend most of my time working with SQL Server, but recently I had to take over and rebuild our Exchange. As I've had good success with Stanek's other books, I picked this one up the week before to help me get up to speed on Exchange, and it did an excellent job. I successfully upgraded, had all our servers up and running by Monday morning and we have an extensive multiple server configuraiton with OWA, wireless, and X.400 MTAs. Exchange Administrator Pocket Consultant is by far the one Exchange book I can't recommend highly enough. Get it, you'll be glad to have it on hand. I refer to this book constantly. Summary: MS Exchange Server 2003 pocket consultant This book has been very helpful with building a new server, migrating from MS Exchange 2000. Summary: Ugly book Buy it only if you haven't installed Exchange server help yet. If you have than read the help first and save money. (Bought it in Russian and checked in English to make sure that translation is correct. Well it's a copy of English book, unfortunately) Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Microsoft Windows Books I ordered these books online and they came in very good shape and were delivered on time. Very informative and helpful books. Summary: Boring but useful I used this book to pass the 70-290 exam. This book contain a lot of useful information. It is a great reference book too. Anyway, it is not the style of book that I like to read. Summary: Thick, shallow, and full of technical errors Thick, shallow, and full of technical errors. Don't go here lookng for answers, if you find them, they are equally likely to be from some prior (probably re-edited) windows 2000 manual, and sometimes just wrong! I read it from cover to cover...and it didn't get any better. MCSE, MCT, CCNA, SECURITY+ (etc) Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Sold, detailed and concise I've bought several of Stanek's other books and they've never let me down. They're always concise and to the point, even his huge Windows Server 2003 Inside Out. I picked up this book on a whim, and I'm sincerely glad I did. Windows Command-line Pocket Consultant covered everything I was looking for and lots more. I didn't know you could do half of this stuff from the command line. Excellent coverage, it covers 100% of the tasks I perform as an admin everyday and lots of things I don't normally do. Every single chapter is comprehensive, making this a great find! Highly recommended for all skill levels. Summary: Good, but limited Good reference for command line administrative tasks. The author succinctly illustrates many tools that an administrator may want to use from the command line. The book is laid out in four basic parts: Fundamentals, System Admin, File and Disk, Active Dir and Network. Don't expect any more than this. Also don't expect any deep information on registry manipulation, driver discovery, system prep or access control list manipulation. All of which are accessible from the command line, and all of which are insufficiently covered in this book. Cacls, devcon, sysprep, don't expect to find *ANY* information here. I don't entirely blame the author, I was just a bit disappointed to find out the hard way that this book is geared to a pretty inexperienced audience. But don't fool yourself, this is not a comprehensive refence to Windows command line tools. What I would like to see: an Advanced Windows Command Line Reference. Summary: |

I have finally figured out why some of my group policies were not functioning properly and the intellimirror chapter was awesome. If you don't have this book please purchase this book as a reference are a problem solver. Summary: Overall good Overall a good book, but it could have been more detailed about DFS / Offline Files / Redirected Folders interaction. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Excellent beginner to mid-level book This is an easy to read book with the detail you would expect from a pocket consultant. The author doesn't waste time with the basic chit-chat and does a good job of laying out the useful material. Content includes initial setup, backup, performance monitoring/tuning and more advanced features such as registry and metabase settings. Advanced readers will eventually want to search for further information on some of these topics (scripting for example), but this is to be expected. The books leaves you feeling comfortable with what you've learned and with a good feel for where you might want to expand your learning in the future. Most of my computer books end up getting re-sold or trashed, but I'll be keeping this one on the shelf for myself and others to use in the future. Summary: Stanek bats a thousand again! This book is really worth every penny it costs. It is packed with useful information, well written, intelligent, and enjoyable to read. Just the chapters on IIS applications, side by side .NET configurations, and pooling are worth the whole book: it goes through every detail. The in-depth coverage of every other subject is as accurate as it gets. I particularly appreciated the chapter about customization. But the book goes as far as covering in perfectly understandable terms the metabase, and more. Not to mention the incredibly accurate chapter about optimization. Summary: A Good One One of the good books in the market about IIS 6.0. People who are interested MUST have a look at MCPMAG(Redmondmag) IIS 6.0: Step-By-Step Mega-Guide, Part I & II as a quick reference. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very useful book I consult it regularly when I need to do something with Outlook VBA. Its clear, intelligently written, and comprehensive. Summary: Not for seasoned VB coders If you've been writing in VB and VBA for awhile then this book is a large waste of money. The first half of the book covers basic VB programming concepts like For Next, Do While, Select Case, Msg Box etc.... stuff I've been doing for years. The rest of the book has some okay examples, but it's not organized in a way that allows you to find what you are looking for easily. Summary: Absolutlely essential tool for Outlook Programming I am a little more than a novice with VBA, but with Sue's details and explaination of the complex syntax required by Outlook, real progress was possible. I have been able to build an Outlook form with VB Script that collects data form a large number of people within my company and store it on a public foler for futher use and reference. It only took a few weeks to do that and it would not have been possible without this book. Highly recommended. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Best Windows XP Administrator's Pocket Consultant 2nd edition is a little over 500 pages (504 to be exact). It is well written, easy to understand, and the best I've found. My copy has so many dogears and highlights. This book is worth it and then some. Summary: Not just for administrators Out of 5 Windows XP Prof. books this is the one I use the most. This book is packed with useful information, well written, excellent details. By the way, contrary to many other publications that claim to be up-to-date with the latest software version, this book was REALLY written about Windows XP Service Pack 2. Summary: Best of Breed This book is very well written. Stanek does a great job of balancing the need to be consise and yet throurough. This one is definately worth it's cover price. Summary: |
