Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Mario Tailgates NASCAR Style I bought this as a birthday gift for a friend. She just loves it!! Thank you, Amazon, for making this a special birthday for a special friend. Summary: Love the Book... just not the concept of a celebrity writing one. At first I didn't think I needed a celebrity telling me what I'd been doing for years. But after meeting Mario at Charlotte, I changed my mind. He really is into NASCAR! The book is easy to use and understand. Great recipes and in the end I did indeed learn some new things. Summary: Limoncello Vinaigrette? Well, if Mario says so -- Don't be put off by the NASCAR connection to this book. Batali doesn't let the rest of us -- or food -- down. This is just a different style of food than we are accustomed to from him, but, oh, is it worthwhile! Don't think this book is usable just for tail-gating and don't be discouraged by the outdoor cooking aspect of the recipes. Not all of us can, for many reasons, take advantage of outdoor grills and we need not feel cheated. Everything here can easily be done indoors. The food is suitable for the kitchen table, the deck, a picnic, or just to bring something special to an everyday family dinner. How about barbecued meat loaf with corn and sweet onion salad? Finish off with Mario's Apple Brown Betty and you have a real pleaser. Tonight we'll try Leo's Sloppy Joes with creamy cole slaw. The rain is torrential out there so we'll do this inside. Back to that limoncello vinaigrette - I usually prefer mine over ice, but if anyone will go catch me a snapper, I'll try it. Mario has not led me astray yet, and I trust his ideas. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: 1 part road trip travelogue + 1 part Nascar history = fantastic read! I've been into Nascar for a year or so, and my future husband and I had our first big weekend date at the second Fontana race last year, so I'm partial to those fast cars and the culture that goes along with them. This book was great because it delicately weaved a wonderful history of the sport in with a year long road trip across America. It gets wonderfully intellectual and philosophical - all sorts of topics are explored within the context of Nascar - religion, WalMart, the suburbanization of America, etc. The writing is delicious - this is a book to be savored. Summary: A must for any fan As a "rookie" to the NASCAR world, I picked up MacGregor's book on a lark. I figured anything that would help me better understand my new sporting love would be worth the price paid. However, this book was worth double the cost; Jeff's wit and prose had me in stitches from the first pages. This is a totally recommended read for anyone even minutely intrested in America's fastest sport. And for anyone who has spent time at a track, whether it was grandstands, infield, or campground, see how many times you nod your head and say "yep, thats exactly how it is." Summary: Don't need to be a NASCAR fan to love this Whether you love or loathe NASCAR and its loud and rapidly expanding culture, you'll enjoy this book. Jeff MacGregor is a throwback to the sophisticated sports journalism that briefly flourished in the '70s and early '80s, when top notch writers like Frank Deford and Jim Bouton elevated the genre with sharp insight and wit. Sunday Money is an affectionate and savvy glimpse at the exploding new Americana to be found at your local NASCAR super speedway. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Big John's Speedway Grill Good recipes that are easy to follow, interesting stories, very informative for new tailgaters. You don't have to be a race fan to enjoy this book. Summary: BEYOND FANTASTIC I BOUGHT 3 OF THESE COOKBOOKS AND ENDED UP WITH ZERO. EVERYONE THAT CHECKED IT OUT WANTED ONE SO I GAVE THEM ONE, EVEN MY COPY SO NOW I NEED TO ORDER ME ANOTHER ONE. I LOVE THE RECIPE NAMES AND GREAT RACING INFORMATION. IT IS IN MY OPINION THE PERFECT COOK BOOK. THANKS! Summary: Hooked on Youk! I got this book for Christmas and have had to keep buying them for all the friends who saw mine! I am a cookbook reader, and this book is FUN--lots of great pics, funny stories, and one great recpie after another. This guy is a no-nonsense cook who sounds like he'd be a riot to sit across the picnic table from--probably more stories where those came from! Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Too funny! A fun read for all NASCAR fans! We definitely recommend it for non-serious reading!! Summary: Cover art & title are a little misleading This is a pretty good book, but not if you're expecting stories from the current era of NASCAR stars, for example, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Most of the stories relate to the older stars, and that's fine, but considering the cover art and the lead in for the title, I expected a little more of the "new" and a lilttle less of the "old" stories. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great history & insight I liked that some of the less famous drivers got mentioned. Good history & some great stories. Summary: Yep, I Enjoyed It The book was a pleasant and entertaining read. Many of the stories have been told and retold many times including the tragic death of Fireball Roberts in, of all places, a fiery crash. The book tells the behind the scenes politics and vision of Bill France Sr. that made NASCAR a multi-billion dollar booming business. NASCAR did not begin in 1994 when they first went to race at Indy even though ABC television would have you believe that. It did not begin in 2001 when Fox got the coverage of the entire year and watched Dale Earnhardt die on the final lap (this is basically where the book ends). It did not even begin when Daytona was originally run in 1959. NASCAR began as basic "Dukes of Hazzard" style moonshine running. The history portrayed in the book is accurate but a bit shallow. It also fails on another point: I would like to have seen a more in-depth treatment of the 1992-1993 Winston Cup points race and twin tragedies that deprived us of Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison. The book is a good overview but lacks depth in some areas - and this one is the most telling. All in all, it was a good book. But you CAN get more information from the Stock Car Racing Encyclopedia as well as Golenbock's book. Summary: Maybe a rehash? I'm a new NASCAR fan. I happened to buy this book at full bookstore price. I also bought a used version of Peter Golenbock's "American Zoom". I read Joe Menzer's book first. Loved it. Then I read Golenbock's 1993 book and read many of the same stories, almost word-for-word, about NASCAR. Summary: |
| NASCAR For Dummies

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: I learned so much! I am a new fan to NASCAR and I already know more than most longtime fans thanks to this book. It is written by Mark Martin, so you know it has lots of "insider" info. Even though Martin has been in the business for a long time, he wrote in a way that made it easy for me to understand, even with my limited knowledge. I enjoy watching NASCAR races every weekend even more because I actually know what's going on! I now know what a track bar is and what happens when you put a "rubber" in the right rear. Before reading this book, I would have been pretty sure that was obscene! You will enjoy reading this book but you also be able to keep it around for reference when you want to learn more about a particular track or adjustments being made on pit road. I highly recommend this book to a new fan or the most diehard fan out there. Summary: Good intro for the NASCAR novice I wanted to learn about NASCAR and knew nothing about it... and this book did a good job of introducing it to me. My one complaint is it doesn't talk enough about what's going on in the actual races, and I still feel a little lost about what exactly is happening on the track, how exactly the race works, and what specific strategies the drivers are using. A little more on the actual racing and this book would've been perfect. But it's still an excellent intro if you're looking to learn about the sport. Summary: Turn left and hit the gas My boss once jokingly told that's what NASCAR is about: turn left and hit the gas. Then I went to the Alllstate 400 at the Brickyard and now I've read Mark Martin's NASCAR FOR DUMMIES. It's looking a little more complicated than fast left turns. The author's enthusiasm for the sport of NASCAR racing is contagious. As the driver of the Viagra-sponsored car #6 in the Nextel Cup series, he ought to know what he's talking about from the inside out and about 188 mph. Chapter 1 ('NASCAR Racing-the best sport around', pp. 9-24) tells you how men (well, mostly men) driving cars that look vaguely like your father's Taurus ended up racing them around oval tracks in front of millions of spectators and television viewers and why you couldn't possibly not be excited about this. Like most professional sports, NASCAR has acquired corporate sponsors. It is arguably the most logo-plastered sport in the world, a fact that Martin explores in 'The Big Business of NASCAR' (ch. 2, pp. 25-34). Martin convinces you that that's a good thing, and before you know it, you know the primary car sponsors as well as the drivers and their car numbers. The rest of the book takes you from zero to sixty in a fairly easy stretch of reading. If, like me, you started this book after attending a race or two and just getting at toe-hold on the sport, you won't end up an expert. But you'll be in good shape to understand the basics of every major area of the sport and to learn more as your exposure grows. Mark Martin is not a great writer, but you don't buy the Dummies series for great writing. You buy Tolstoy if you want great writing. What Martin effectively does is lets you know that there's a whole lot more to NASCAR racing than you thought when you got yourself into this, but that you can learn a fair chunk of it pretty quickly. It's also organized as a handy reference book for when you need to go back to look up a topic you breezed over a little quickly on the first go-around. I bought this book because there's a strong NASCAR culture in the company I joined. My boss sponsors the 18, driven by Bobby Labonte. See, I knew how to say that right. You can too. Buy the book.
