Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: A fast, amusing, read If you turn your nose up at early-'70s LA music, but really know more about the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Fleetwood Mac, etc. than you'd like to admit, then "Hotel California" is a recommended guilty pleasure. On the other hand, if you've grown to admire the craftsmanship and durability of the songs that came out of that era, you probably deserve a more thorough and mature account of the "cowboy canyon" scene (to use Walter Becker's phrase). Barney Hoskyns deftly covers a lot of historical ground in about 250 pages. But the quick pace leaves more than a few loose ends hanging. Early major players Barry Friedman and Mama Cass fade away fast, while Fleetwood Mac has its meteoric rise crammed into two pages. Disappointingly, Hoskyns spends more time on faves Gene Clark of the Byrds and Lowell George of Little Feat. This leaves the usual chronicling of mega-players David Geffen, Irving Azoff, The Eagles, Linda Rondstadt, CSNY, Jackson Browne, et.al. At least novices will find out why JD Souther was so integral to the scene, even if his solo albums aren't well known. That said, there is some bitchy fun to be had reading less-than-flattering accounts of Joni Mitchell (high-living snob), Gram Parsons (rich-kid hanger on) and even Neil Young (whose mercurial career changes seem less heroic than self-centered). These irreverant portraits are refreshing, if one-dimensional. Wait until this comes out in paperback. Crack open a bottle of Cuervo and a few other refreshments from the era and enjoy a frivolous afternoon. Summary: It's All Here The definitive book on the California sound from the Laurel Canyon 60s to the cocaine addled 70s, it's all here. Special emphasis is paid to David Geffen's venture from agent to music record company owner and his specific group of artists, Jackson Browne, Eagles, JD Souther and Linda Ronstadt. The rest of music history also is here like the singer/songwriter hangout, the Troubadour. This is a fascinating period that celebrates political upheaval and the influence of songs written with meaning vs. pop love songs. For anyone with an interest in popular music, American culture or Los Angeles specifically, this is worth the read and I strongly recommend it. Summary: Better than you would think Hoskyns new book isn't the masterpiece that his previous 'Waiting for the Sun' was but it's a fine job, nonetheless. The Laurel Canyon scene in the '70s is a much-derided smorgasbourg of drugs, sex and oh-so-mellow California rock whose major exponents (The Eagles, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell, Crosy Stills and Nash, etc.) have been forgotten in the past few decades by those who never got past their punk obsessions. While not exactly considered "hip" in 2006 this music actually has a lot to offer. Joni and Jackson were responsible for a succession of excellent singer songwriter LPs spread out amongst the entire decade. The Eagles were perhaps the biggest selling US band of the time. Linda Ronstadt--the most popular female rocker (if you can call her that) of the second half of the decade, never wrote her own material but recorded some better than average records which were unavoidable on '70s FM radio. Other luminaries such as J.D. Souther, Randy Newman, Van Dyke Parks and many others get generous coverage. So pick it up. If this kind of music interests you at all you won't be dissapointed. Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: So You Thought You Knew Your History This is one of the better college texts for American history. The information is straight forward compared to the full text version, and no information is missed between its big brother. The second half highlights from 1865 onward into the 21st century. I would highly reccomend this book for students taking a introductory course in college or AP American History in high school. Summary: Great Overview! This book gives a great overview of the social aspects of U.S. History since 1865. It was rather refreshing to read a history book that was not so narrowly focused on the death and carnage of war in this nation. The wars are discussed, of course, in relative detail, but more weight is placed on how they affected our nation's citizens and society as a whole. The photographs and illustrations were fantastic in revealing how life truly was at a time we often have a hard time imagining, let alone comprehending these days. In addition, I found it really helpful in learning the information and doing well on my exams! Summary: Worst History Book Of All This has got to be the worst and boring history book of all. Throughout my entire years in school reading history book this has to be the worst. It gets so boring you can't even read it if you try. If you did read it, chances are you did not understand them 10 pages. Combining with a horrible professor and book it's going to be one long semester for me. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Classic Fun A truly original premise requiring more than the usual suspension of disbelief, Flat Stanley delivers a light-hearted journey through the life of Stanley Lambchop. Stanley, a typical American boy, finds his life suddenly transformed when he is flattened by a bulletin board. His parents, in language and wit, sound like a television show family from the 50's, but with the off-beat humor and implausible story-line, it somehow all works wonderfully. Jeff Brown has created an interesting dynamic in describing the relationship between Stanley and his older brother, Arthur, who is intermittently inconsiderate and jealous of Stanley's new-found celebrity. Ultimately, however, it is Arthur who saves the day and returns Stanley to his proper size. It is a very engaging, upbeat story that is a fun read for the toddler set. I highly recommend it. Summary: Flat Stanley 40th Anniversary Ed. I purchased this book because my nephew sent me Flat Stanley. I wanted to know more about him. I am glad I did. Thanks to my nephew I have all of the Flat Stanley books so I can understand what they were reading. Summary: Flat Stanley Great book for 3rd grade students. Extends to a valuable geography lesson within the classroom. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 2 Reviews: Summary: A College Students Opinion This book was used in my American History 1865 to the Present class. Basically we followed the textbook and started post-civil war. Anyway, I found this book to differ from most High School text books. High school textbooks are usually overflowing with detail, dates, names, etc. I remember reading them and wondering "What in the world is my teacher thinking? I'm never going to remember all of this!." However, I find after reading this book that I prefer those 600 paged hardcover books rather than this. The American People Volume II should never be used as the prime textbook in a history class. It's descriptions of events are very scarce and I have often found myself seeking other sources to find out what I am reading about. For example, there were about 3 pages describing the Native American conflicts in the late 1800's (Which was also turned into a SIX EPISODE mini series called Into the West. This shows how little is told about these conflicts in the book.) and there was a mentioning of a Dawe's Act. However, the text went to say what caused this act and what resulted from it (2 sentences each), but it did not say what it actually was. This has been the case for many other Acts, Bills, and Laws that are mentioned. This is also not a note-taking book. The descriptions of events are so slim and undetailed that there is nothing to note about them, and I find myself moving on in the reading and not remembering much. Therefore, I would have to conclude that I prefer those large high school history textbooks in comparison to this brief history. At least with the detailed books you can get more of a rounded picture in your head of what is being described, rather than just basic facts such as "Wheat was farmed in the Great Plains." One last comment: the text is also a bit juvenile. Each chapter begins with a story of a family or individual and it is as though you are reading Little House on the Prairie. So before you buy this, make sure that it is absolutly required. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The author is passionate about old houses....but:) I am so glad I read the book after I bought my turn of the century farmhouse. If I read the book before I started renovating the foundation, roof and everything in between I think I would have been scared away. It's a must read book and if you are as passionate about renovating an old house as the author and myself...lol...read the book and go ahead and buy the house!:) Summary: So you bought an old home? We purchased this book while living in Watkins Glen, NY. Most of the homes in the area were close to 100 yrs old. That being said, this book turned out to the be the definitive resource we turned to for *anything* house related. The author comes across as being the house expert equivalent of Tom and Ray on CarTalk. Although you can run to it when your ready for a project, I suggest actually reading it. If your serious about owning and maintaining an older house, I promise you will continue to go for this book long after your subscription of "This Old House" has expired... Summary: Absolute Must-Have for any Homeowner! Not ony does George Nash "know his stuff" regarding construction and the business of restoration, he can actually write! I think this book would be a terrific manual for any homeowner because he explains how things... mechanical and structural... are put together, how they are supposed to work, when you need to repair or replace now and what can wait, what to expect. It is a wealth of information. Normally, I skip around these types of books looking for whatever pertains to the project I'm working on. I started this book at the beginning and am slowly working my way through. Well worth the purchase price. This book is well illustrated with photos and drawings, easy to read but not at all simple in nature. Love it! Summary: |
