Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Beyond words This book is an absolute masterpiece. One of the best of our times. Dr. Faye's journey itself was incredible. His mission or obsession to save the central African is relentless. This book is a tribute to him, Nick Nicols, whose photography surpasses anyone's both in quality and purpose, and to the deepest, darkest Africa. Also recommended - Traces of Eden: The Last of the American Wilderness Summary: This book is a timeless keepsake I highly recommend this book. The pictures are beautiful and some are disturbing. It truely tells the amazing story of Africa. Summary: An Extraordinary Treasure This "boxed set", consisting of a large case containing two extraordinary books, is one of the most satisfying purchases I have ever made. In case you don't know, here is the background on the "Last Place on Earth": Mike Fay is a scientist with the Wildlife Conservation Society who, outraged at destruction Congo Basin forests, decided to walk across the heart of Africa in order to document the undisturbed wild before it was lost. Over a year later, after innumerable hardships, wonders and adventures, Fay finally emerged from the forest to the waters of the Atlantic, ready to report back to the world what he had learned. Fay's stories and Nichols' photographs of this "megatransect" were so affecting that Gabon's president, in an unprecedented boon to world conservation, decided that his country's forests had value beyond their timber and designated vast tracts of Gabon as new national parks. The first and much larger of the two books in this set, contains at least 100 full-color, full-page photographs of the landscapes, animals and peoples of the African forests. The photographs are amazing: gritty and beautiful. They are the closest thing to being there. The second book contains black and white photos of Fay and his troop as they make their way across the Congo, and text by Fay himself. We learn how Fay came to be infatuated with saving the wilds as a teenager at a Maine summer camp, and how he came up with the idea of the megatransect, how he endured it, and how he was able to use such a "stunt" to create enormous changes in Gabon. In the end, Fay seems to be the environmental version of Gandhi: gaunt, with a line in his eyes, an unbreakable will, and a singular focus on protecting what is most precious to him: wild nature. If the nearly, $100 price tag for this set seems a little steep, know that a portion of your money is going towards preserving the forests and wildlife of central Africa. It is among the best $100 you will ever spend. Highest Recommendation. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Great Photoshop book for any type of photographer Sheppard works through a series of photographs showing when, why and how to use the various Photoshop tools. Unlike most other Photoshop books, this one focuses on establishing a workflow. The best explanations I have ever seen regarding adjustment layers and layer masks. I would have given this book five stars but the printing is pretty poor and often it is hard to discern differences from one photo to the next in the sequence. Also, the illustrations are too small and are generally on a following page. Editorially, this book is a five star gem -- kudos to Rob. As far as production goes, if there is a next edition, it should be printed at 8.5 x 11 inches, with larger illustrations and much better pagination. Yes, it will cost more. But it would be worth it. Summary: Jack of all trades master of none I really wanted this book to be better. I got this book after reading an excerpt from it in Outdoor Photographer magazine. After reading the book I must say that I am a bit dissapointed. The problem is that the book tries to be all things to all people and really does not do a good job at anything. For example the first half of the book deals with basic Photoshop 101 stuff. Things like levels, curves, crop, layers, selections etc. The only problem is that moderate to experienced Photoshop users (like myself) will find this a total waste of space, (which I could live with) but the problem is it is all presented at such a high level that novice users will find it totally useless. The biggest issue however is that they did a VERY poor job with the layout of the book. The book has a lot of screen shots to show you various PS menus and workspaces and none of them are on the pages where they talk about it. You constantly have to flip ahead 2-3 pages to see the example. There are also many before and after shots of pictures processed with PS. It wouls have been really nice if they were on the same page, but once again you have to flip between pages. The second half of the book does get a bit better, but I found I really wanted more. If you get this book and you have at least a basic working knowledge of Photoshop you will probably learn a trick or two that will help you with your photography and it is really not all that expensive here on Amazon. If you are new to photoshop you would be much better served elsewhere, like the many great books by Scoot Kelby Summary: Ideal for target audience A refreshing change from tips and tricks to fix up poor images or special effects wizardry. A comprehensive, methodical approach to getting the very best out of a photograph. Valuable insights rather than a respin of Help. A focus on the tools you need not every possible tool and technique. Superb photographs ilustrate how small changes can make a big impact. Highly recommended even if you're not primarily a landscape and nature photographer Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Ansel Adams of Animals In these days of digital photography it is seldom that we see a collection like this of black and white photographs with sepia and blue highlighting. And even more rare to see a collection of animal photographs that touch the soul like these. Mr. Brandt further concentrates on the animals themselves, usually at rest. Although looking into the eyes of that cheetah as he stares into the distance makes you glad that you are not a small antelope that he might convert into his dinner. I don't believe that I have been struck by a set of photographs since Ansel Adams. You might call Nick Brandt the Ansel Adams of animals. As Mr. Brandt says in the Afterward, 'I am not interested in creating work that is simply documentary or filled with action and drama, which has been the norm in the field of the photography of animals in the wild. What I am interested in is showing the animals simply in the state of being.' In this Mr. Brandt has done a superb job. Summary: Awesome Absolutely beautiful! Has the feel of the 1800's when things were more wild and unknown. The colour form of the photo's enhances this feeling. Presents a close look at how majestic and beautiful the animals are! Such a joy to look at when you're tired of the city, people and the constant rat race of life. A peaceful calming experience! Loved it and look at it often. Summary: On This Earth: Photographs from East Africa review This is an incredable book. The images are amazing and it's fun to look at. I highly recomend it to people who are starting out in photography and are looking for some example artists already in the field. Summary: |
