Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Quite useful This book provides everything you need to begin using your D70. It includes tons of information that's not in the manual, and was quite in-depth in its treatment of using camera controls and options, with many examples of how you might want to apply various focus, exposure, and other settings. I also appreciated the lengthy section on taking photos in portrait, sports, animal, travel, and other set-ups. Although small in size, this book crams a lot of content into its pages. It's quite similar to the D50 version I purchased before I upgraded to the D70. I passed that book along to my wife, and I like having my own copy that is customized specifically for my camera. Summary: Very impressive! What makes this book useful to the Nikon D70s owner is that more than two-thirds of the material covers topics that aren't mentioned in the manual at all. The first three chapters describe use of the camera, its controls, and features in much more depth than you'll find in the Nikon manual, with clear explanations of each function and when and how to apply it. This approach alone makes this book a much better introduction to the D70s. The second two-thirds of the book goes beyond the manual with new material explaining the basics of digital photography with the D70s. It includes discussions of lenses, composing images with a DSLR, and several dozen different kinds of photographic situations and how to approach them. All in all a very satisfying book. Summary: Not very impressive There were only a few new things I learnt. Most of the stuff is already mentioned in the manual. I was expecting an in-depth coverage of stuff. It just seems like old wine in a new bottle. Could have done better definitely. I have respect for the author. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: Once I read it carefully, I was quite please with this book I think a cursory look at this book would give the appearance of a rehash of the manual, but once I had a chance to actually read several sections in depth, I relized that it gave me significant insight concering not only what functions were on the D70s (as in the manual), but what settings/features should be changed from defaults. All the advice seemed very well placed, especially in terms of auto ISO (leave it off), focus assist light (also off), how to work with P mode, etc. Of the several books I've read about the D70S, I actually find this one the most useful by far. Summary: An outstanding book - highly recommended! I have no idea what the previous reviewers are doing comparing this book to the owner's manual, much less calling it a "re-hash." I guess they must have received a different manual with their camera than I did. I found the stock manual to be poorly written, vague and epidermal at best. Crappy photos and illustrations. Way lame, especially for a $1G+ camera. This book features clear and concise explanations, outstanding photos, and a far more comprehensive and lucid discussion of camera technique and use of controls. Plus, the author is unafraid to chide Nikon for certain decisions and provides useful work-arounds to most challenges. I purchased the book a week before I received the D70 and, boy, I'm glad I did. You will be, too. Highly recommended and well worth the double-sawbuck! Summary: Manual Rehashed This book is nothing more than a rehash of the manual that comes with the camera. In fact, it's worse in many ways, since the concise and carefully formatted presentation of information in the manual is replaced by extended and sloppily arranged discussions of the same content, which makes it harder follow and much less helpful as a reference. Additionally the physical form of the book -- a stiff but cheaply bound paperback -- makes it less convenient to travel with and harder to keep open for reference while working the camera. (A further note: the book you get will not be the one depicted here. Mine was a D70 only book. No mention of the D70s at all.) Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: I needed this book BEFORE I could make use of the many more advanced books I've since read about the D70 and SLR photography. The D70 was my first SLR. If it's your first SLR, too, you will LOVE this guide. The "5 bucks" book is a much, much, much better place to start than the more advanced guidebooks or the literature Nikon included with the camera. I bought several "how to use" books when I bought my D70. Like Goldilocks, none of them was "just right" for the first three weeks except this one. I was able to move on to the "difficult" books much, much more easily because of this guide. Furthermore, by following the stepwise guidance about selective focusing in the first 20 pages of this guide, I was able to take my first artistically composed photos within minutes. I strongly agree with David Bess, the top 500 reviewer. He said "The user's manual included with the camera was overly complicated and detailed, and the quick start guide with the camera gave too little information. This small book is just right for a novice/beginner photographer..." That was my experience, too. The "5 bucks" book has a very specific function that it does really well: It provides a zero-anxiety, cheerful, gorgeously laid-out, idiot-proof explanation of how to get beyond the point-and-shoot mentality. It's like a shuttlebus that takes you from the point-and-shoot airport terminal, over to check-in for advanced SLR photography. Sure it only takes you to check-in -- but what were you gonna do without the shuttlebus, WALK there? SUGGESTED 4-STEP MASTERY SYSTEM: I suggest the following sequence if this is your first SLR camera. (You can skip directly to step 3 or even Step 4, but the learning curve is much gentler -- virtually painless -- if you do it in this exact order...) 1. Read this beginner's guide. (Amazon's digital download (PDF) edition is great, and provides instant downloadability gratification.) 2. After two or three days of reading and practicing with this guide, your Magic Lantern DVD will arrive in the mail from Amazon. When it does, you'll be totally ready to watch it -- s-l-o-w-l-y -- and you'll understand it painlessly. Hint: Actually try out each advanced function as it's being described on the DVD before going on to the next scene. 3. After a week or so, move on to the Nikon D70 Digital Field Guide by David Busch or a similar intermediate text. 4. Finally, begin to read general photography guide books about composition and exposure such as the Amphoto Books series, or photography tutorial websites. A whole new world of artistic possibilities is about to open up for you. I hope you find these first weeks with an SLR as exciting as I did! Summary: It's 5 dollars It's basic, but it's 5 dollars. It's a nice little basic intro book that is easy reading. Summary: Nice little book! This proved to be a handy little reference for a very good but somewhat complicated camera. The format is good and the price is right! 5 stars if it had just a bit more material. Then again for the price perhaps I should not be expecting much more. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Not very helpful This is nothing more than a variation on the instruction manual. A waste of money - I feel ripped off and its not worth returning because I live outside USA Summary: Doesn't teach you anything D-70 specific Most of this book is good for someone who has never taken a photograph with a digital camera. It is pretty useless for an experienced photographer that wants to learn the Nikon D70. The same information is on the quick start card, and easier to find. Save your money Summary: Disappointing This, like other Dennis Curtin books, have way too much boilerplate "generic" information while not covering the specific camera sufficiently. There are e-books and other books out there that are far better. I do admire his ability to "get away with" publishing these books for this kind of money! Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Nikon D70S This DVD is perfect of hands on learners. It can show you what your manual cant. And you can rewind it as much as you need to fully understand your camera. It not only covers the basics like how to install your battery, memory card, and lens's, but it also goes further than that by telling you how to take better photos, and explains how things like the shutter work and why. After watching this DVD, I feel much more comfortable using my camera. I would recommend it to everyone with this camera. Summary: Nikon D70s Tutorial worked for me. The Nikon D70's QuickPro Camera Guide DVD tutorial assisted me in understanding my camera. I was not only entertained with great photo shots but educated in terms of how to use my camera. I learned how to zoom in on an image using the ISA button. I like it when the actual camera buttons are shown to press and hold in sequence. That was most beneficial to me. This DVD should be used in conjunction with every camera like mine. I'm still working on aperture speed practicing with shots outside and inside. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: A VERY Useful Book I purchased two books about the D70 (See all my reviews). This book is EXCELLENT!. It presents all of the features and functions of the camera. Firstly it covers the key functions of the camera such as Focus, Exposure etc then it summarises each item in the cameras menu system. This way you have a two way reference system to find the particular subject in which you are interested. (i.e. one way is "what does this button/menu item do?" and the other way is "How do I do this (eg focus etc) with my camera?") When presenting this information the book uses "information Factoids" to explain important points about various features and also how you might use certain features in the field. This is the real value of the book - you start to get an understanding of how to use the various features in combination when shooting The PDF version of the book also has lots of examples where you can run your mouse over a picture and see the difference in various settings on a picture. Reading about it is one thing - seeing an example is even more useful The book also includes various "asssignments" which is a great way to get you out in the field and build your skill and confidence in the camera. It has its little flaws but I think this is probably the best D70 guide you will find as all the others sold by Amazon appear to be little more than a rehash of the manual Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Only buy this book if you loose your manual Sorry I cannot agree with the above reviews. THis book is a total waste of money as it is no more than a rewrite of the information in the manual and you will be none the wiser on how to get the best out of your D70. If I didn't live outside USA I would return this book as it does not live up to its promise. For some reason this book is listed twice in Amazon - go read the reviews under the other listing - they too are on the mark - Skip this book!! Summary: Nikon D70S This is an excellent product. It is written in simple terms that even a beginner to digital photography will understand. Despite this many advanced photographers will learn many "wrinkles". It avoids the use of jargon and is very well illustrated. It proves that even a photographer with almost sixty years experience can learn new tricks. Phil.Robins. (Australia) Summary: |
