Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Very satisfied with the contents If you read the editorial review: It is stated that the book is about installing and configuring Oracle Database 10g on Linux. Yes, the author did explain clearly the process of installing and configuring the Oracle 10g on Linux. He also covered a few more topics such as HA (High Availability), Tuning SQL, RAC, Replication, Index and Partitioning ... but not in depth. But the coverage is acceptable and useful. Do buy this book and you will find it useful if you love Oracle DBMS running on LINUX platform. Summary: Good intro to Oracle 10g for Linux As an experienced Oracle DBA, I wanted a nice text that covers Linux specifics to Oracle 10g. This book is okay not perfect but the only real Oracle 10g for Linux book on the market. Good 1. RAC coverage is decent 2. Linux tuning for Oracle is nice Bad 1. Data Guard coverage is very weak 2. No workarounds for installation issues with Linux and Oracle So I give it 3 stars because its not bad but not great. I hope that the other Linux for Oracle RAC book that comes out next year is better. Summary: lots of buzzwords but no useful info I was very anxious for this book to come out since it had a very lucrative table of contents with all the "right" stuff in it. Unfortunately I found the book to have a lot of unneeded info such as history of Oracle, history of Linux, Unix, overview of Oracle products, etc junk. If you an Oracle professional, you probably know all of this anyways. I was hoping to find "trade secrets" and "best pratices of ORacle on Linux" that will help me , but instead found very basic descriptive information, nothing detailed in particular. There is nothing "special" about Oracle architecture, backup and recovery in this book that refers to Linux that you can't find in any other oracle 10g book. The only useful detail that I found is remapping of kernel base when using Large memory for SGA, but that also can be dug out of OTN. Also you will find a much better overview of Linux from any "Linux Administration" book. Overall this book may be ok for a newbie as introduction, but if you are past that stage, I would say pass on this one. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Best new book for Oracle 10g Application Server I have a couple other books on Oracle 10g Application Server. This one beats them hands down for comprehensive discussion from install, design to administer the complex product. As an Oracle DBA I need to support this environment and found the book useful. Summary: Oracle Java apps step-by-step This is a step-by-step walkthrough of Oracle App Server programming. It goes from application architecture basics through twenty-one chapters on using various APIs and services (with one on installation) to end on clustering and failover. Graphics are used quite heavily, often showing page by page use of various Wizards. Where the book excels is in it's explanation of the various XML descriptor standards required to register web services, or message queues, or various other system services. Often these things are opaque mojo and the author demystifies these files and shows exactly where modifications need to be made. The code samples are relatively short, just enough to flesh out the topic. This is more a field guide than an indefensible reference work. The chapters are too brief and the coverage too scanty to be an in-depth treatise on any one topic. As long as you understand this you won't be disappointed. Summary: No Oracle lock in The 10g is Oracle's answer to IBM's WebSphere and JBoss. Wessler certainly wastes no time in delineating how you can use 10g to develope J2EE applications. There are some mundane chapters on installing and configuring it. Important, granted. But the crux of the book is the chapters on making and deploying web applications, EJBs and Web Services within 10g. If you look here, 10g seems to allow for any standard J2EE application to run within it. Crucially, suppose you commit to designing and developing one of these applications, to use 10g to hook to an Oracle database. Then your code can be largely independent of that database and 10g. In principle, you can migrate it to another J2EE compliant container, over a different database, and have only minimal changes. Realistically, your code under 10g will have all sorts of little Oracle dependencies. But this book suggests that with careful design, you can safely use 10g and still preserve a migration option. No Oracle lock in. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: The Standard! I used this book to deploy Oracle Application Server 10g infrastructure on Linux and UNIX. I felt that it was a good book and overall I have little ill to say about it. The examples are well written and do a good job of reinforcing what you read in the handbook. You read a little then do an example, then read some more, then add to the example and so on. You don't need any Administrative experience to use this book just a decent understanding of application design. The only criticism I could offer is that the editor should have used arrows when content is being continued on a new line for reasons of page space so that readers will know and understand (beginners can have trouble with this). It's a good book for learning Oracle Application Server 10g as a whole from the ground up and for this reason it's worth the money. It's not an overnight crash course (if that is what you are looking for). Summary: Very Nice Job I have taken the iAS 10 Admin I course from Oracle, and wish that I read this book prior to the class. I found it very valuable especially if you are deploying iAS 10g (9.0.4) on Linux. I highly recommend the book to iAS administrators/DBA's. Summary: Summary of the White Papers As an administrator/implementor of these systems, there are many aspects to administering the 10gAS system. Although the authors do make reference the book intends to simplify the rather large amount of documentation, it falls short of a complete guide. It is good starting point for a default implementation--detailed installation steps, with moderate emphasis on design (ex. touching on distributed administration and delegation). Thus provides adequate groundwork. The forefront of administration of this product is design choices. For example, the Internet Directoy piece is major component to the architecture--its design greatly impacts administration of the entire system. Perhaps this book was not intended to be a design resource (since it is designated an "Administration Handbook"), but administration in the field of application servers is highly dependent upon design decisions. The book would be a fair addition to a reference library, but not necessary if one is willing to sift through the vendor "White Paper" documentation--as large and convoluted as it may be. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Oracle9i Database The book is great for my class. The reviews really help and are easy to follow. Summary: too many errors i just finished teaching a 10 week intensive course on database administration using this book, and i found that there were far too many errors to make this an effective text. the typos were extremely frustrating for the students, and virtually every chapter had several important mistakes. these typos make the labs all but unusable, and the book is in dire need of an editor! it made my 10 week class difficult, to say the least. Summary: A solid Reference I had this book over a year. I started reading it when I passed my first ocp exam (1z0-001). This book is very organized and sufficiently detailed to give you a solid knowledge to master the topic covered in the exam 1z0-031, Fundamentals I. I think this book is not written for someone who wants to rush in getting certified. If you take your time and read this book you will get a solid knowledge of the topic covered in the exam 1z0-031, Fundamentals I. The book walks you through some pratices that build over time a complete understanding of the topic on the exam. But I did not rely mainly on this book for the exam 1z0-031. Since the book does not have a lot of practice exam questions I had to use other references such as the Sybex book by (Chip Dawes and Biju Thomas) and the oracle press book by (J. Couchman and Sudheer Marisetti). Those are good books too. But they tend to focus more on the idea of "what you need to know to get certified". The Sybex book is pretty good with Chapters well-structured and explained. The Oracle press book provides more practice exam questions that I used to test my knowledge of the topic. I will definitely recommend this book to ocp candidates. I give 5 stars. I will probably buy the one related to exam 1z0-032, Fundamentals II DeKalb, IL US Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 4 Reviews: Summary: good if you have oracle preknowledge this is the first book i read to prepare for my OCA exam. at first i was a bit overwhelmed because the chapters are quite long and the languages are not very easy to understand (sometimes i have to reread a sentence two or three times before it clicks). but i guess it was also because by then oracle was still rather new for me. if you are an experienced dba (maybe a 9i oca or ocp) then i guess this book alone should be enough to get you a 10g oca. but if you are new to oracle, i would suggest you to study John & Damir book first (OCP All-in-one exam prep guide), it's easier to absorb and the chapters are shorter (although there are more chapters). then, if you still have the time (and the money) get this book to wrap up your preparation for the oca. i'm sure you will pass the exam like i did. Summary: Flawed OCP Preparation - you can do better I started learning with this book, but switched to Oracle Database 10g OCP Certification All-In-One Exam Guide (Oracle Database 10g Handbook) by John Watson and Damir Bersinic when it was released in September 2005. Unfortunately, this book does not have a clear, memorable structure. Besides, the review questions are quite uncharacteristic. The other one I switched to proved much better. Summary: Best Technical Book I've Ever Read... ...and I'm a picky guy. Seriously, this book has a clear concise language, is structured well, and has a wealth of examples, screenshots and very good diagrams. What it luckily doesn't have: The occasional corny episodes other technical book authors include, like: In 1984 I had an incident when a customer stuck his finger in the floppy drive, and... Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Straight to the point This is short and sweet. Of all the Oracle books I have read, this is among the best if not the best. I'm not affiliated with the author, reviewer, or publisher so I get nothing for saying it. If you're a brand new DBA this isn't for you. If you've read and understand the majority of the Oracle concepts, admin, backup/recovery, and performance guides, then this book helps put the technical theory into practice. Summary: a good resource I found many helpful items in the book. I would prefer more information on applying oracle patches thru dbconsole and manually. More Windows examples would be great Summary: Excellent Resource for 10g DBAs The book is a solid, painstakingly detailed Oracle 10g DBA handbook. This book covers the latest Oracle 10g Release 2 features in detail and is an excellent reference for DBAs as well as developers and managers who are using the 10g database. The book provides excellent coverage of all 10g features, such as the Automatic Workload Repository and the Automatic Database Diagnostic Monitor (ADDM). There is very good coverage of features such as the SQL Advisor and the Segment Advisor. The book's great feature is that in addition to clearly explaining the various topics, it provdes useful examples or scripts to help implement/use the various features. This makes it a very useful and practical addition to any Oracle DBA either currently using or planning to implement Oracle Database 10g. For those just starting out, the book also provides excellent tutorials on Oracle SQL/PLSQL and the UNIX operating system as well. Summary: |
