Avg Cusomer Rating: 1 Reviews: Summary: Kill your curiosity with this one very bad book... do not use this book if youre starting programming or python. the first chapter itself will put you off completely. try instead beginning python by Magnus Lie Hetland. its simple practical and downright fun. Summary: This should be your first Python book! This is simply a stellar introduction to the Python language, for both newcomers to programming and those who are already proficient in another language. I know there are several choices for 'beginning' type Python books, and you may be tempted to choose a different one because it is newer than this one, but please understand that you lose nothing by reading this book instead. It covers Python 2.3 (which is just short of the current 2.4), and there are only a couple of items not referred to (e.g. decorators and decimals). But you can easily read up on the latest features online. The benefits of this book far outweigh the fact that it was published a few years ago! Here is the true advantage of Learning Python: the authors describe the language in complete detail from the ground up. They begin with how to use the interactive interpreter and IDLE, and then move on to built-in data types. Every single thing that could be considered a 'component' of the Python language gets its own chapter (numbers, strings, lists, etc.), and the larger components (functions, modules, classes, etc.) each get their own Part (which is further divided into chapters). In other words, they take plenty of time to describe everything you need to know about everything in the language. You won't finish learning the core language until well into the 400-range of pages. Another intro Python book that I just began reading has already covered numbers, arithmetic operators, functions, modules, and a few other things, all by page 20! I won't name the book yet, because I'm not fairly deep enough in it yet. But this is certainly not good for a newcomer. Don't even wonder about other books! Learning Python covers every aspect of the language in great detail, yet at the same time remains intelligent (e.g. it does not explain to you what variables in general are (hopefully you have a basic understanding of programming already), but it explains in great detail what variables *in Python* are). After you read this book, you will have an amazing foundation in Python. Summary: Not really useful This book is not very good for actually learning Python. It also lacks a reference section and is excessively wordy. Learning implies tutorials and a gentle progression from basic to advanced subjects; this book does neither. For example, in chapter 3, "How You Run Programs", it introduces modules and namespaces--fairly advanced concepts to read about before even the first "hello world" program! In chapter 4, as it describes the use of numbers and strings, it is already delving deep into the uses and implications of Python's objects. With well over 500 pages, there should be plenty of room for a reference section, but there is none. There is no list of built-in classes and their methods. The overall tone of the book is enthusiastic, touting Python's object-orientedness and other advantages. Unfortunately, it is excessively wordy and difficult to read. Cheerleading can be excused, but it is present on nearly every page and gets old quick. In a book about programming or a programming language, one might want tutorials, reference, discussion of advanced topics, or code examples. This book provides none of these things. I do not recommend it. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Panther help is on the way! This is not the first user manual, by David Pogue, that I have purchased. I rely on these publications to not only give me the basics, but also a more advanced understanding of new and unfamiliar Mac operating systems. Get to know Panther with the help of David Pogue! Summary: Mac OS Panther, The Missing manual Excellent help so far. Our school IT administrator was so impressed he is ordering a copy for the staff. I never realised you could continue to burn info, images etc onto an ordinary cd! The Expose feature pointed out in this book is brilliant for quick access to school reports. I am not very familiar with the MacIntosh computers but this book is going to be a great source of info for OSX. Summary: Bilingual I'm becoming bilingual--I'm learning to speak Apple as well as Windows. I just got a new iMac G5. Apple basically tells you to learn the system by pushing all the buttons to see what they do. Yeah, right. I also have the XP Missing Manual. This is a good series, a lot better than the Dummie series, if you really are a dummie. The organization is good and there is a lot of information, starting with the basics and going from there. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: No other OS X server book comes close Even with 10.4 out this is still the number one book on Mac OS X server there is. Period. Bartosh goes deep in to all areas of OS X server and provides excellent examples for you to follow. This book has saved my hide on a number of occasions and I can't wait to see what he comes up with next. If you only buy one OS X server book this is it. Summary: This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration. This book is organized into seven parts and one appendix: from new system installation to remote management and different kind of clients supported. Inside the first part, there is a chapter about planning system deployment reviewing different scenarios as first task to take care of. The author exposes some basic ideas about system administration as well as strategies and tools to resolve a large number of common problems. One of the key points of this book is its better organization centered around system deployment phases than Apple documentation. Continuous explanations and small tricks to monitor and tune the system are made across the entire book sections. There is exhaustive information about installation with graphical tools, command line and network setup. The most appreciated resource can be screenshots: it allows to follow all the explanations without any problem to new Apple system administrator. Authors, as advanced users, describe in an easy but deeply enough way all management tools of all system services either graphical or command line versions. Some other Open Source or even propietary tools are described when they are good alternatives to Apple ones. All the chapters contain "best practices" sections and background knowledge to really understand their functions. This is a "must-have" book for all level users related to Apple systems administration. I'm really impatient waiting for Tiger revision. Summary: Best MacOS X Server book For those who are familiar with MacOS X and would like to learn the server-side of the equation, this book is it. Apple's documentation has been sparse and this book covers that deficiency with great aplomb. This is the best Mac OS X Server book on the market right now. Too bad O'Reilly just cancelled the Tiger version because I would have first in line for the next edition. http://www.afp548.com/article.php?story=20051221121321676 I hope they change their minds because it will certainly leave a big void in future MacOS X Server documentation. Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: An Essential Read The real history of the Black Power Movement will seemingly never be truthfully covered by mainstream historians. But that doesn't mean the misconceptions and dirty lies should be repeated time and again to those interested in the ongoing struggles by persons of color. You know the drill; when it's said a topic/person is not important or much too radical then it simply is a footnote to history. And Assata: An Autobiography is a great point to start that sojourn or to continue gaining knowledge from a person passionately involved in the revolution. Assata Shakur's message cannot be read as simply an historical piece that has no relevance today. By doing so, the reader will miss the bigger picture that Shakur presents. The times change, but the struggle continues. Summary: WOW The story of Assata Shakur is deep and motivating, after reading the story of her journey I was surprised at the amount of people that had no clue of her story. This book is a great read for everyone, this book will make you think and want to learn so much more. I am so happy that she was able to tell her story. Summary: Must read! The book was great. I felt like using a highlighter during numerous points in the book. "The less you think about your oppression, the more your tolerance for it grows. After a while, people just think oppression is the normal state of things. But to become free you have to acutely aware of being a slave." this quote meant a lot to me. Its so true that many of us (including me) have become so passive in the treatment we are subjected to. We must constantly remind ourselves of the injustices because "this" is not normal. Assata dropped numerous names I was unfamilar w/ so I made a list and I am going down it little by little and getting some background. There is so much we all dont know. And of course if we rely on "America" to enlighten us we will be clueless for the rest of our lives. And seriously I closed the book numerous times just to think. There is so much to be done and if we could all come together to organize so much progress could be made. Summary: |
| Black Panther By Jack Kirby Volume 2 TPB

Avg Cusomer Rating: 3 Reviews: Summary: Just when things start to look up... Learning from my mistake on volume 1, I did not purchase BLACK PANTHER BY JACK KIRBY VOLUME 2, but borrowed one from a friend. At least this time, I wouldn't be out twenty bucks if the stories didn't get better. Backing up a bit, when Jack Kirby returned to Marvel Comics in the late-`70s, he was given a surprising amount of free reign over several properties, one being the Black Panther. Serving as writer, artist, AND editor on the title meant that Kirby would have almost complete control over the character he created with Stan Lee in the `60s. On one hand, it was a nice way to herald the return of the man known as "The King". On the other hand, it led to some pretty directionless tales. In fact, I have to wonder why Kirby took on Black Panther when it's fairly obvious from Volume 1 that he had very little to offer the character at that point. Don't get me wrong - I think that Jack Kirby is one of the greatest creative minds to ever grace the medium of comics, but he wasn't much of a writer. When not paired with a good editor, he could certainly produce some real stinkers, and Black Panther was unfortunately one of them. This volume collects issues # 8 - 13 of the series, which picks up fairly seamlessly from the stories in volume 1. Black Panther, aka T'Challa, is working his way back to his jungle kingdom of Wakanda. The main focus in the first half of this book is on trouble brewing at home, as General Jakarra, T'Challa's half-brother, pulls a coup d'etat. Having exposed himself to raw vibranium, he mutates into a monstrous creature and begins destroying the kingdom, so four of T'Challa's relatives don their own panther outfits to save the day as... "The Black Musketeers"!!! (Hoo-boy!) Meanwhile, the Panther offers a lift to a stranded mafia don and then runs into the middle of a "Star Wars"-type movie being shot in the desert, apparently just to give Kirby the chance to draw some robots and monsters. Oh yes, BP also develops psychic abilities. So the first several issues of this collection amount to a continuation of the same weirdness from the first volume; however, BP's newfound psychic abilities do play a large part in the plot of the second half of the book, which is actually quite good. In this story, the villainous scientist Kiber the Cruel kidnaps T'Challa's cousin Khanata and plans to convert him into energy on which he can feed. Kirby starts this story off right - it's pretty good action, and the conclusion, co-written by Jim Shooter and Ed Hannigan, and pencilled by Jerry Bingham, is superb. Unfortunately, at this point Kirby's static stories just weren't cutting it anymore, and the title folded after 2 more issues by Hannigan and Bingham. I'm not sure if Kirby left on his own, or if he was forced off of the title; regardless, the new creators really picked up the pace with issue # 13 and did some great things with the King's creations. It's easy to see that with more editorial control, or maybe with a co-writer, Kirby's Black Panther series could have been much more. But I digress... BLACK PANTHER BY JACK KIRBY VOLUME 2 is a much better buy than volume 1. You certainly don't need to read the first volume to enjoy this one. Summary: |

Avg Cusomer Rating: 5 Reviews: Summary: Revolutionary Review This book is one of the first and only unaltered accounts of the Black Panther Party by somebody who was in it. The book is in Huey's compassionate voice. This book dispells rumors about the BPP Huey set the record straight. This is my favorite book of all time its a book for the ages. Summary: Revolutionary Suicide What can I say, that hasn't already been said? Huey P. Newton was a very complex individual, and I find myself reading a section over a second time to digest what was written. It's worth it no doubt. When you start to read this book, you will not be disappointed, Newton sheds light on even personal matters like falling in love, and views on family. This is great if you want specifics on Mr. Newton himself, and not just the BPP as a whole. Summary: Incredible If you want to attempt to get into the mind of Huey Newton, then read this book. Reading his autobiography gave me a view of the Party I have never felt. This gave me an understanding of how and why the organization was started and also some insight on the life of Huey. You will defintely have a different view of the Party once you have read this. So read, read, read, and keep reading, and educate yourself about this incredible man and organization. Summary: |
